Chapter 90: The Halsteads.

Jay/Hailey. Set after series 7. At Kim and Adam's wedding, Jay and Hailey finally confessed their feelings and spent the night together and now they are back in Chicago and hiding their relationship from their friends.

I do not own Chicago PD or any of the characters.

Here it is! The final chapter! This is the end of the journey I've taken Jay and Hailey on in this story and I have loved it and I hope that you have loved it too! I would really appreciate your thoughts :). I have some more ideas for stories, so I'll share them soon. As always, I have loved sharing this story with you and would love to hear your thoughts on this chapter :)

Four years passed and, in those four years, Henry and Charlotte, the latter known as Charlie, grew up and were now 4 years old. Henry was the spitting image of Hailey, with bright, blue eyes and blonde curls and Charlie was clearly Jay's daughter, green eyes, dark hair and freckles. Henry and Charlotte Halstead were the most loved children in the world. Hailey and Jay knew that they had made the right decision, moving out of Chicago, because Henry and Charlie had so much space to play and run around, in the garden and there was nothing that Hailey loved to see them do more.

After the twins' birth Vanessa continued to live with them for almost the first years of their lives, until she had decided that it was finally time for her to leave and find a flat of her own. She adored the twins and Jay and Hailey agreed that, when the twins were old enough, they would tell them how important Vanessa was, to them and to the twins. Vanessa and Kevin were now living together and, as had been a shock to everyone, Vanessa was pregnant with their first baby. About a year ago, Vanessa had gone to Hailey and asked her if she and Jay would like her to be a surrogate again, for another baby, for Henry and Charlie to have a younger brother or sister, but, even without talking to Jay, Hailey knew what their answer would be. She and Jay had their babies, their children, and they would never want anything more than what they had. Henry and Charlotte were the greatest gifts Vanessa could ever have given them.

Even though Hailey and Jay had left Intelligence over 4 years ago, they were still close to the unit and saw them as family. Kim and Adam were Auntie Kim and Uncle Adam to Henry and Charlie. They were close to Owen and PJ and they loved their Uncle Mouse. Voight and Platt were surrogate grandparents to them, just as Gail and Danny were. Hailey's mum was in their lives, as their grandmother, but not her father and her mum always saw Henry and Charlie either at their house or somewhere else, totally away from Hailey's father. Neither Hailey nor Jay ever wanted to take that risk.

To Henry and Charlie, Avery was their big sister and she had moved in with Jay and Hailey after their birth and still lived there, commuting into Chicago every day. Hailey thrived in her job at the FBI. It was perfect for her and Jay was so happy as a teacher, away from his life in the Army and police. For him, taking such a drastic step away had been the right move, for him and his family. Of course, Jay still attended therapy and there were times when his PTSD was triggered by stress or nightmares, but, as always, Hailey was there for him and they now had a PTSD dog, who picked up on the signs. It was something Jay knew, eventually, he would have to explain to the twins, but, right now, they were 4 and just thought that their daddy didn't like fireworks and loud, unexpected noises and sometimes didn't sleep as well as their mummy did.

As always Jay woke up at 5 and he glanced at the clock, knowing that Henry and Charlie would be awake in an hour. He returned his attention to Hailey, who was sound asleep in his arms, with her blonde curls spread out against the pillow. He smiled and lightly kissed her messy curls. Removing himself from their bed, without waking his wife, he checked on the twins and found that they were both silently sleeping and he took their dog for a run.

The light streaming through the window woke Hailey up and she rolled over, to find that Jay wasn't there, but that wasn't uncommon now. The sound of the front door being locked made Hailey's heart leap and she closed her eyes, pretending to be asleep, with a smile on her face. Jay slipped himself back into their bed and wrapped his arms around Hailey as he kissed her eyelids, making her smile. With a smile, Jay rested his head against hers and told her, "Sleeping Beauty, I know you're not asleep."

Keeping her eyes closed, with a wide grin on her face, Hailey asked, "How do you know?"

"I was a detective, you know." Jay replied, with a light chuckle. "And, when I was a detective, I had the best partner ever and she became my best friend and, then, after years of pining for each other, at a wedding, we got our act together and finally got together. It was finally our time together."

Opening her eyes, Hailey looked into her husband's eyes and asked, "Oh, really, what happened after that?"

Jay's grin matched Hailey's as he pulled her closer and told her, "Well, I proposed to her, then we went away for the weekend and she said that we should get married. So we did. Then we-we went through a hard time, but we figured it out and we had our twins."

Hailey tilted her head and mused, with a smile, "Hmm… I should meet this partner of yours, your best friend, I feel as if she and I would have a great deal to talk about, Jay Halstead." Without another word, Hailey broke the gap which was between them and embraced Jay with a sweet kiss, which he returned in a loving way, as he always did.

Their kiss was interrupted by the patter of tiny feet as Henry and Charlie ran into their room and dove onto the bed, placing themselves between their parents and cuddling into them. "I told you Mummy and Daddy would be awake, Charlie!" Henry told his sister, with his bright, blue eyes shining.

"I know!" Charlie responded, nudging her brother and Jay and Hailey exchanged a look and they both smiled. Charlie crawled over the bed and looked at Jay and Hailey as she asked, "Mummy, Daddy, if you could- could be anywhere, where would you be?"

In an instant, just like the night of Kim and Adam's wedding, blue eyes met green, and Jay replied, "Right here, baby girl. This is where Mummy and I want to be."

Charlie smiled with joy and snuggled into her brother and Hailey, whilst Henry snuggled into Charlie and against Jay. Hailey and Jay settled into their bed, with the twins in between them and Hailey looked over at her husband and mused, "Do you remembers when I talked about our new chapter, a better life? I never imagined it would be this."

Jay smiled and shook his head as he ran an affectionate hand through Henry's curls. "Me, neither. But here we are. Right here, Hailey."

With a smile on her lips, Hailey repeated, "Right here, Jay, always." They settled back into sleep, with Henry and Charlie in their bed. Hailey and Jay had saved each other and given each other new life. From partners, to best friends, to boyfriend and girlfriend to married couple, to parents, Jay and Hailey were always there for each other, always having each other's backs and they always would, with the life they had created together.
