What if the Cullens were under the impression Bella had been kidnapped and murdered when they left? That is until a member of the Voltouri write and inform them of a surprise they have for them. But what happens when they're 'surprise' has no knowledge of them and has been broken down into a baby? Will they make the newly re-founded member of their family learn to not only trust them, but any vampire?
TW/DARK/ TALK OF KIDNAPPING AND RAPE/
Last time the Cullens had managed to feed and bathe Bella but there was still a mystery, what the hell is Bella?! Will she settle into the life the Cullens want or will be lost, a feral vampire forever?
Edward's pov:
Bella emerged from the bathroom looking cleaner, yet still unhealthy looking. She was walking a little unsteady, but then again this was Bella we were talking about.
Everyone's thoughts read the same gist.
He never should of left her. We never should of left her. What happened to her? What was she, a human or vampire? Would she get past this?
Everyone's thoughts spoke different things but ultimately read two things. One, hope that Bella would heal and two, fear, fear of what Bella was.
We'd had to book another hotel for the soonest Jet we could hire would be a couple hours. The only humans on board would be the two pilots and a the flight attendant. At least then if she were to slip we could easily take care of it.
Esme broke the uneasy silence.
"Bella, would you like to meet everyone now? They would love to meet you."
She looked around at all of us and pointed directly at me. Did she remember me?
"Yes Bella, that's Edward. Would you like him to come say hi?"
She looked up at Esme and gripped her hand harder. I waved at her and she waved back but wouldn't let me move closer.
"There will be time for meeting when we get to the next hotel. Right now we need to get her in the car. A bell hop is about to come up and tell us to put the phone on the hook. He nicked his finger on a card earlier. Carlisle, Esme and Rosalie will stay for a minute to keep away suspicion" Alice told us.
She walked over to Bella and grabbed her hand without a care.
"Come on munchkin, we're going to go to the car. It'll be fun, I promise."
Bella looked alarmed but followed, Emmett, Jasper and I followed in the same fashion. We snuck out of sight just as the bell hop's elevator opened. Once again we were condemned to the fire escape.
Alice's pov:
I held Bella's hand as I took her down into the carpark. It was a fairly simple affair to find our car and decide who was going in with her. It was a 20 minute drive to our next hotel and Bella would soon doze off, allowing Carlisle to examine her properly.
I climbed into the back of Carlisle's new car and beckoned Bella to follow. Much to Edwards disgust he and Jasper would be riding with Rose and Emmett.
If there was ever a thing we couldn't afford to lose it was Bella's small amount of trust in us. She had crammed herself into the door and kept throwing nervous glances everywhere. Clearly confined spaces wasn't her thing.
"Bella?"
She looked up with wide eyes.
"Bella, I know this is scary but I promise no harm is ever going to come to you here"
When she gave no response I sighed and leant against the window glass. This was going to be a long ride.
After a little while Esme and Carlisle walked up to the car. They entered cautiously and looked over at Bella.
"Were going to go to a hotel alright?" Carlisle told her.
Bella hummed and muddled with her fingers. Carlisle looked back and set off towards the new hotel.
When Esme turned the radio onto a gentle piano station Bella's eyes began to involuntary droop. The poor girl was exhausted.
We waited before her heart rate had slowed to an even beat, indicating she was deep in sleep now. We couldn't risk talking in that fast, high pitch that humans couldn't hear. Not until we know what Bella can hear.
"Carlisle, what.. what is she?" Esmes tentative voice asked. Carlisle shook his head.
"I don't know dear. I'm hoping a proper examination will be able to help. A human-vampire hybrid should be impossible."
He was stating the obvious. We all knew that whatever Bella was should be both impossible and in the Voltouris eyes, illegal.
Is this what they meant? We could destroy her or let her carry on as whatever she is. There was no way we would ever kill her. She was family, even if her existence was a mystery.
Carlisle's examination offered no explanations for us. He was able to assure us that she should be okay to go on the plane, although he couldn't say for certain.
All his prognosis gave us was heartwrenching news. Signs of sexual abuse and malnutrition were obvious. Multiple badly healed broken bones and head trauma, which was obvious to us. Our real concern on what she was. Judging by the way she swallowed down the blood, she was one of us. She, however, also had a heartbeat -albeit a faint one- and she slept. All things impossible by vampire standards.
Carlisle said our best bet was to nurture her and see if she could eventually tell us what happened and to only speak the Voltouri when strictly necessary.
When she got home her 're-teaching' as Carlisle put it would begin. Me and the girls would help her learn the skills stolen from her, the boys showing her how to have fun.
"Where do I stand. I mean, I want Bella back but in her current state? I'd feel terrible, making her think she has to love me" Edward whined.
"Edward." I interrupted him. "I can't see much right now, its mostly some weird fog, like Im watching through a storm. But I can see that she's going to look to you for comfort. She can feel the mating bond"
I knew as well as everyone else that he was in denial about the mating bond, but now he had to accept it. We were the only hope that Bella had to live.
"Our flight leaves in an hour. Alice, any idea on the wait time?" Carlisle asked me.
We all knew that this was not going to be an easy trip. 7 perfect looking people and one sick, dead looking girl? We'd look like a trafficking ring.
"The desk people will come in looking for passports." I told him "Tell them Bella is very sick and we are trying to get her to her father immediately, we forgot her passport in the rush. Don't bribe them until a very last resort. That will raise their suspicions"
Although we had our passports Bella probably wouldn't be on their system and if she was, it would probably be a bright red warning sign considering shes 'missing'.
We all sat down on the many chairs and watched Bella slumber. She curled up into a ball, a complete 360 from her old speeping habits. Where the new Bella shook and occasionally whimpered in her small ball, the old Bella talked, tossed and turned and on more than one occasion, got up and tried to walk around.
After his fifth time glancing at the clock Carlisle stood up.
"Wakey wakey everyone. Its time to get going."
He lifted Bellas sleeping form into his arms and kissed her forehead.
"We're going to get you home, sweetheart. You'll be safe forever there" He promised her. Although she didn't stir, she seemed more relaxed, at peace even.
Carlisle ignored Edwards protests and carried her into the car in the lot.
"Alice said she'll sleep until we get home. You can be with her in the car and plane" Carlisle sighed.
"Yeah, cause you drugged the poor kid" Emmett joked. We all sent him a death glare. Now was not the time to be joking.
"She was in a lot of pain, these were stronger. Besides say she woke on the plane, what would we do then? I doubt she'd let any of us go near with some medicine" Carlisle spoke through gritted teeth.
"Right. Sorry Carlisle. I meant no harm, you know that" Emmett said, oddly subdued for him.
Edward went into the car with Esme, Carlisle and Bella whilst I went to join my Jasper, Rose and Emmett. We were going to have a lot to talk about.
Carlisle started delivering commands as soon as we got home.
"Gentle now Edward. Shes sleeping naturally" He threw a glance at Jasper. "Almost naturally. Place her on the couch. We'll renovate your room to make it suitable."
We watched as Edward carefully gathered Bella into his arms and stared down at her face. There was nothing but pure love and regret in his eyes.
"When does she wake?" He asked looked at me.
"I can't see. The fog remember? Sure, I see her clinging to Esme and Edward for the first week or two." I confessed.
Everyone followed him into the house and began doing their assigned tasks. Esme rushed upstairs to move Edwards couch out of his room and replace it for a bed. Emmett began gathering things to light a fire, despite Rosalie turing on the heating. Me and Jasper began looking online for more clothes for Bella, she would need much more and Edward cane unwillingly too, upstairs to 'Bella-proof' his room, which was mostly glass like his room in Forks.
We heard Carlisle begin planning what to do, what the best course of action was. None of us could help him there. We all stayed working until we heard a thump downstairs.
"Shit" I think we all muttered collectively. Bella must of fallen, meaning even more bruising on her sweet little body. But when we got downstairs, Bella was no where to be seen. Esme, who had beat us all there nodded towards the gap by the sofa and the wall.
"She keeps looking around, for someone or something I dont know" She murmered.
Edward muttered something before slowly making his way towards Bella.
"Hi Bella, It's okay, we wont hurt you. Can you come out please? It must be very cold and uncomfortable in there." He reasoned.
We heard Bellas breath stall and she looked up towards Edward.
"Edward. Use simple words. She needs to-" Edward cut me off.
"Shut it Alice. Im trying here."
Bella whimpered and Jasper growled.
"You've scared the poor baby Edward. Move over." Esme instructed.
Emmett, probably seeing he wasn't going to budge walked over and grabbed him by the arm.
"Mom's got this." He told him fiercely. We waited in silence as Esme sat down and crossed her legs.
"Hi Bella, you're safe now. I'm Esme, do you remember?" Not exactly simple words but better.
Bella curled into her legs again and hid her face. A growl broke the silence and we looked around. It wasn't one of us?Esme gasped.
"Oh darling! You must be hungry? Can one of you bring me some food please."
"Ill get it. It needs to be plain, we dont know how long its been since she's eaten." Carlisle saud as he ran to the kitchen.
I was struck with guilt. Of course she would need to eat! She's been with us a full day and she hasn't eaten!
"Thanks" Esme muttered when Carlisle handed her a banana. "Here" She peeled it and handed a chunk to Bella.
"You must be pretty hungry huh?"
Bella pressed her back against the wall and looked down at the banana.
"I know, its not as yummy as the blood, but you need the food"
At the word "food" Bella's head snapped up.
"Yeah, its food, silly" Esme promised.
Bella slowly opened her mouth and took a bite, still looking around warily. When she finished taking her exaggerated bites she looked at the other half longingly.
"Come along, theres more for you here" Esme said gently as she scooted back an inch. We saw why a few minutes later.
Bella had to unwedge herself from behind the couch. Her hand tentatively reached for the banana. She looked at us warily when she poked her head around.
"Its okay. Remember us? This is your home now." I soothed.
She looked at Carlisle then down to the banana in Esme's hand.
"She needs your approval, Carlisle" Jasper said from beside me.
"She see me as a threat?" Carlisle asked sadly.
"No. But she sees you as a rule maker. Shes scared of upsetting Esme but needs your approval I think" Jasper said.
Frowning, Carlisle carefully moved closer towards Bella, in a crouch much like Esmes.
"Here, aren't you hungry?" He took the banana out of Esme's hand and motioned it towards Bella.
Cautiously she reached out and took it.
This time, she ate quicker. Still afraid and nervous but still, she was eating.
"Good girl, everyone, go hunting. Me and Esme are going to stay here. We need to feed her and get her washed properly." Carlisle instructed. Everyone moved but Edward.
"Edward. Go." He repeated.
Edward opened his mouth and began to protest but was saved by the bell. Well saved by the Bella.
She had crawled slightly out of her hidey-hole and was now staring at Edward like he held all the answers of the world.
"Hey, little Bella" He cooed softly.
She sucked in a breath and leaned her head on one side, reminding much of a dog.
Edward shuffled closer to Bella and held a hand out.
"Do you remember me?" he murmered softly. "I certainly remember you. You're just as pretty. I'm Edward"
We all held our breath as Bella reached forward too.
"Edward"
We all gasped at the word. Sure, it was just one word but fuck it, she was talking. It was a word.
"Yeah. I'm Edward." Edward was grinning from ear to ear like a lunatic.
Seeming to like the positive reaction from talking, Bella tried again.
"Edward"
Bella shuffled a little more until her and Edwars were holding, not just resting atop of one another but actually holding hands.
Edward smiled and looked over to Carlisle with a smug look as if to say hah.
"Fine. Esme, could you please go make Bella something soft and tasteless. Mashed potatoes probably." Carlisle asked. "Bella. Do you think a bath would sound nice? We have some things to wash you properly here"
Back at the hotel the best we could give her was a rinse down, we didn't want harsh soap to hurt her. Here however, we now had some baby soaps Carlisle had gotten. Nice and soft for Bella.
When Bella didn't let go of Edward, he sighed.
"Bella." Edward said gently. "I can't bathe with you. C'mon, I'll stay right outside"
Bella stayed stubbornly silent.
"Or some nice yummy mash?" I offered, no longer being able to take the silence.
She looked up at my voice before quickly looking to Carlisle.
"Whatever you want darling."
Edward began standing up and slowly pulled Bella up with him.
"Dinner time" He told her.
Bella still seemed worried but shakily followed Edwards lead to the kitchen.
Emmett rubbed his face with his hand.
"Well fuck."
Well fuck is right.
