AN: This is literally my first fanfiction. Don't expect high quality content because I certainly don't. In the future I will probably read this and think it is a piece of garbage. But right now, I am proud of it. Therefore, advice is not only allowed but encouraged. I shall also warn you, I am going to change most canon events, so don't expect the timeline to be precise.

25th of January 1995, Hogwarts grounds
The fourth-year students were at their Care of Magical Creatures class.
And today it would be a special day. Because for the first time, Hagrid had said that the creatures would be more dangerous to him, than to his students.
This quickly gathered everyone's attention, and the students began to worry about the possible monstrosity they might encounter on the other side of the fences. That was, until Lavender spoke:
"Oooooh! Unicorns! They are beautiful!"
Harry thought this had to be some kind of joke from Lavender's part (or Hagrid's) but when he managed to see something, he found a herd of unicorns, indeed. Probably around twenty adults, and a few golden foals that kept jumping around.
"Beautiful they are, indeed!" Hagrid spoke. "These animals are the epitome of purity. They are mostly peaceful, but that doesn't mean they get along with everyone. Adult unicorns only enjoy female approaches. Girls, you are lucky."
He opened the fence, before continuing:
"The girls can come in. Just make sure to be respectful. I have a few apples you can feed them when they get used to human contact. As for the boys, I will try to bring the foals with us. I have been bribing the adults with treats for the last couple weeks, so they will allow us to admire the little ones for a while."
Hagrid whistled, and the foals approached him. Harry couldn't help but notice the looks the unicorns gave Hagrid, as if they didn't fully trust him. Harry supposed that they felt intimidated by him in some way.
As soon as they arrived though, Hagrid brought a box of carrots, to keep the foals happy. Meanwhile, he began teaching the boys about the unicorns. The girls would get an identical lesson a few minutes later.
All in all, the fourth-year students would agree that it was one of the best lessons about creatures they had had so far.
That evening…
Harry had just finished dinner. He had left the Great Hall, and was about to begin his climb all the way to Gryffindor tower, when he heard someone call behind him:
"Harry! Harry, wait!"
"Cedric? What do you want?" Harry asked the Hogwarts' champion.
"It is about the second task, it is rather urgent."
"What about it?"
"Have you managed to decipher the egg?" The Hufflepuff asked.
"Yeah, I figured that out weeks ago… Why are you asking?"
"Damn it. I wanted to repay you the favour for the whole dragon thing. Guess I can't do that, then."
"So, you figured it out too, all of it?"
"Yeah, and I already have a plan. But I doubt you need help with that either…"
"No, but there is a thing I haven't been able to figure out… What are they going to steal exactly? The things 'I would sorely miss' have been secure for a while…"
Harry looked at Cedric, still thinking about it. Therefore, he was unable to miss his face becoming pale suddenly.
"What is it, Cedric?"
"How should I tell you…" The older boy said. "You know how there are three tasks in the tournament, right?"
"Of course, duh!"
"Well, despite there being one host, each school organises one of the tasks. Durmstrang mostly values strength, and the ability to adapt to circumstances…"
"Yeah, which means we blame Karkaroff for the dragons. Honestly, I don't know how he got to be headmaster of a school…"
"Me neither." Cedric replied. "Anyways, Beauxbatons always pursue the most elaborate and elegant solutions. But there isn't much elegance to diving in a lake, is there?"
"Which means that this is Dumbledore's task." Harry concluded. "But what are you trying to say with this?"
"You know Dumbledore can be a bit… barmy? And he also has a love for dramatics, doesn't he? But there isn't much drama to stealing an object…"
Harry stood there silent, allowing Cedric to reach his conclusion:
"They won't be stealing objects, Harry. They will be stealing people."
27th of January 1995, Room of Requirement
Harry had been unable to stay concentrated today. He was still reflecting on his conversation with Cedric. The fact that his cause of worry was in front of him, didn't help either.
The moment Harry returned to the common room the other day; he began reflecting on who would they take for him to rescue.
His godfather came to mind. He was the adult he trusted the most and had become a father figure to him in only a year. But he doubted they would choose him. Plus, Sirius would never let them ruin 'the best hair in the country'.
Would any of his friends get chosen? Ron and Hermione were the best choice available. But he valued both of them equally, he could not choose one or the other. And having two people to rescue would put him in a disadvantage…
There was only one person they could choose, and it was the blonde girl in front of him.
Who better than his girlfriend, to make the task as dramatic as possible?
Harry dodged the last of her spells, before calling for a time-out. What would be the best way to tell her?
"Something wrong, Harry?"
"I am fine, thanks. There is something I need to tell you though."
"What is it? Did something happen?" Daphne asked worriedly.
"It is about the second task…"
"What about it?"
"You… you… are going to end at the bottom of the lake, Daphne."
"What?"
"You are 'what I would sorely miss.' Daphne. I will have to rescue you next month." Harry clarified.
Daphne stared at him in disbelief. Harry just stood there, looking at her, scared of her reaction.
That was until Daphne walked up to him, and gave him a sweet kiss on the lips.
"While I don't like being kidnapped, I like to think that you value me the most, Harry. It was a very sweet thing to say."
"You… you are not angry?"
"Of course not! It is not as if you told them to pick me. You didn't even mean to be in this stupid tournament anyways!"
Harry smiled at her. He felt considerably better now.
"But there is one thing I am asking:" Daphne continued.
"What is it?"
"Make sure to be fast during the task, because I don't want to spend unnecessary time down there, are we clear?"
"Of course, Daphne. I will be as fast as possible."
"Good. But there is something else you must do as well…"
"What is it?" Harry asked.
"There is no way anyone else can know about this. I don't want Astoria to worry needlessly…"
"You know she will figure it out regardless, right? Bagman will probably announce it before the task begins, and Astoria won't take it well when she realises that…"
"We'll get there when we get there. Just leave my sister to me. I will handle it, I promise."
12th of February 1995
Today wasn't Valentine's Day. But it was the day of the weekend provided to celebrate Valentine's Day.
Therefore, it was the weekend for all couples to celebrate, which meant that Hogsmeade was absolutely crowded, fact that didn't escape Daphne:
"This is horrible!" She said, opening a path through the crowd. "Honestly, did no one think that it would be better to stay at the castle, just to avoid people?"
"Possibly." Harry replied. "But at the same time, staying at the castle with your girlfriend may not sound so special at the moment."
"Hmmm." Daphne responded. "I hope you have something planned for me?" She asked Harry.
"Of course, I do. Wait for a second."
Harry then entered Madame Pudifoot's. Daphne internally panicked. Did he think she would enjoy that? She hoped not. There was a maximum amount of pink a girl could tolerate…
A couple minutes later, Harry came out of the door, holding a big bowl. 'What?'
"What is that, Harry?" She asked her boyfriend.
"That is your present Daphne. Happy Valentine's Day!" Harry said, handing her the bowl.
Daphne removed the cover, to find herself shocked at the contents:
"You got me ice cream? Really?"
"Yes! But not any kind… This is the limited edition for the winter. It runs out in two weeks!"
"Thankyouthankyouthankyou!" Daphne said, hugging the life out of Harry.
"Dad used to get some for Christmas, but I wasn't able to get it this year!"
"So, you liked it?" Harry asked.
"Loved it! Best present you could have given me! Please tell me we don't have to go inside…"
"Ewww no. We will have that somewhere else. I've seen enough pink for the rest of the year, thank you very much."
Harry guided Daphne around Hogsmeade, until Daphne began to realize where they were going:
"You are not taking me to the Shrieking Shack, Potter."
"And why not?"
"Maybe because it is the most haunted house in all of Britain? And probably the least romantic place in miles?"
"And who said that I would put you in danger without checking it out first?" Harry replied.
"Plus, it is not even haunted. That was a cover for Remus." Harry explained. He had talked to Remus about it, and he had given permission to reveal it to his girlfriend.
"A cover for what, specifically?"
"A cover for being a werewolf, to be precise."
Daphne's eyes bugged out. She stared at him in disbelief.
"Him? A werewolf? Maybe that could explain why he happened to be ill so often…"
"It does. He used to go to the Shrieking Shack during the full moons. All those 'ghosts' were actually him."
"That is why nothing has happened in years…" Daphne mumbled.
"But still, it must be in disrepair after all that time…"
"You would be surprised…"
Harry entered the Shack, guiding Daphne towards the dining room. She was no longer reluctant to the idea, but she was still hugging the ice cream as if she were a little girl holding her teddy bear.
It was when Harry opened the door, that she saw what was waiting for them.
Harry had prepared a small round table for the two of them, with candles illuminating the room.
Dobby was also there, dressed as a butler, waiting for them:
"Master Harry Potter and his Greeny have arrived! Dobby is so happy!"
Daphne blushed at Dobby's comment, while glaring at Harry again:
"Did you really prepare all of this for our date today?"
"Dobby helped." Harry replied honestly. Dobby jumped at Harry's praise.
"Miss Greeny should sit down immediately, lunch is ready!"
Harry guided Daphne to her seat, before sitting himself. Dobby soon came with the food:
"Fish and Chips for the Great Master and braised rabbit pappardelle for his Miss Greeny!"
The elf uncorked a bottle of wine too, and served a glass for each of them.
"You are not trying to get me drunk, are you?" Daphne smirked.
"What?! No! There is no alcohol at all!"
Daphne took a small sip. She didn't feel any alcohol in it.
"When did you arrange all of this?"
"Oh, I haven't done much, I admit. Dobby did most of the job really."
"By the way, when did I become your Miss Greeny?"
Harry groaned. There was no way he was escaping from this.
A while later…
Harry and Daphne had been enjoying themselves. They were eating dessert now, and Harry couldn't help but notice how much Daphne seemed to enjoy her ice-cream…
"Did your friends come out for today, Harry?"
"I don't believe so… Unless Viktor managed to drag Hermione out of the castle…"
"But I thought that maybe Ron…"
"Maybe he would have asked Hermione? It is complicated…" Harry told her.
"But how so? I mean, it is quite obvious that there are feelings there…"
"Yeah, but both of them have their issues. Ron grew up in a large family, and he was not the most noticeable of his siblings. He finds it difficult to have faith in himself sometimes…"
"And Hermione? She is smart, I like to think she would notice?" Daphne asked.
"You would think so, yeah. She was already smart when she was young, and that made it pretty hard for her to connect with kids her age. Ron and I were the first friends she really had… She is brilliant in a lot of things, but feelings are still a work in progress…"
"Do you think she would like to hang out with us?"
"What do you mean?"
"With me, and the girls. We could work on something together, maybe help her open up a bit?"
"That could be good. I suspect she is tired of Ron and me some of the time. Seeing different people could be refreshing for her…"
"I will see what we can do about it. Maybe we can study Arithmancy together or something?"
"She would like that. It is her favourite subject. But make sure to go outside the library too. Hermione doesn't know when to stop sometimes. She has improved since last year, but she may go into overdrive if we don't check on her from time to time…"
24th of February 1995, Great Hall
Today was the day of the second task. Excited chatter could be heard amongst the students of all three houses.
Harry, meanwhile, was feeling nervous:
"Come on, mate! You need to eat something, otherwise you will drown!" Ron urged him.
"Ron is right, Harry. You need some energy for the second task." Katie Bell said, handing him some toast.
"Thanks mother. I don't know what I would do without you!" Harry retorted.
"Did you figure out what you have to search?" Ron asked again.
But before Harry was able to reply, Astoria barged into the conversation:
"Harry! Have you seen my sister today?"
"I can't say that I have seen Daphne… why are you asking?"
"Damn it! I asked Tracey and she said that she hasn't seen her since yesterday. I wanted to sit with her to watch the task. Are you sure you haven't seen Daphne?" Astoria asked again.
"I am completely sure." Harry replied. "But maybe she has left. After all, she said that we would meet at the lake."
"I hate this! I am not going to chase her around anymore. I am having breakfast, and once we go to the lake, I will drag her all the way to the seat!"
"That won't be necessary, Astoria. I will do that myself; I assure you." Harry promised with a wink.
Harry hoped she wouldn't hate him much when she realised what was happening. Oh, well. If everything went south, he could always blame it on Daphne. After all, it was her idea…
"Speaking of not seeing people… Where is Hermione? I thought she would be right here…" Ron asked.
"Maybe she has gone to the lake already? I wouldn't put it past her to try and inspect what the judges have prepared…" Harry lied smoothly. He had a strong suspicion over what may have happened to his female friend.
"I wouldn't put it past her either." Ron replied. "I will probably have to drag her away from the judges, if she starts interrogating them…"
"Nah… I get the feeling that you won't need to do anything at all…"
Half an hour later…
Harry was now wearing his swimming trunk, waiting for the judges to relay their instructions. Bagman had assumed his commentator position again, and soon began talking:
"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! We find ourselves here to witness the second task of the Triwizard Tournament!"
The crowd roared. The atmosphere was truly amazing.
"Today's task won't be simple! Our champions will have to do their best to accomplish victory!"
"For the second task, our champions will have to dive into the depths of the Black Lake… Their objective will be to retrieve what we have taken from them, or as we worded it, 'what they will sorely miss'."
The spectators were now silent, listening to Bagman attentively:
"But that is not all. They will only have one hour to complete this task! They will be fighting for a maximum score of 50 points, which added to their scores of the first task, will be used to determine their advantage for the Last Task!"
The champions perked up. This meant that they would stand a chance no matter where they finished…
"As soon as the cannon fires, the task will begin. Everyone ready? 3… 2… 1…"
BOOM!
The cannon fired, and the contestants jumped into the lake. Harry quickly munched the gillyweed, cursing the horrible texture. He swallowed it, and nothing happened.
Harry floated in the water feeling like an idiot. Was it him, or the Gillyweed was not acting as fast as usual?
A few seconds later, he started to feel dizzy. Touching his neck for confirmation, Harry felt the familiar gills.
The youngest champion submerged his head and began breathing normally again. Now the task could truly begin.
First thing Harry did, was to cast the point me spell silently:
'Point me Daphne's necklace!'
During their practice sessions, Harry and Daphne had figured out that the point me spell didn't work correctly on people. If two people had the same name or surname, the spell could go awry.
And considering that there were at least two more Grengrasses by the lake… Harry didn't want to take a chance. Daphne had already told him she would be wearing a necklace she had gotten from her parents.
And the spell had detected it.
It was pointing at the bottom of the lake, approximately at the centre.
And Harry began swimming.
He went lower and lower, and Harry was forced to traverse through some algae. It was at this point, that he saw a difference in the water. Was that blood?
He had no time to ponder on it, because he felt something pulling at him.
A grindylow had grabbed Harry's legs and was trying to drown him.
Thanking Remus for his lessons back in third year, Harry casted the correct spells, and the grindylow swam away angrily.
Taking a moment to gather his breath, Harry sighed in relief before continuing his descent.
Harry spent a several minutes swimming down, seeing nothing dangerous. He saw the occasional fish, but nothing extraordinary. The Giant Squid decided to come out and say hello, but instead of attacking him, he was… cheering him on?
Harry wasn't sure, but decided to swim faster just in case it decided to change its mind.
Harry casted the point me spell again. It pointed to the buildings in front of him. That had to be the mermen village.
Harry continued his swim, going straight on, in the direction he knew, he would find Daphne.
And there she was.
She was tied to a big rock, to make sure she didn't float to the surface. Harry was surprised to see that he was the first champion to arrive.
Hermione was there as well, and Harry supposed that there had been no one else available for Viktor. Cho was there too, waiting for Cedric. And finally, there was a little girl, who Harry thought to be Fleur's little sister.
Not wanting to spend more time than possible underwater, Harry grabbed Sirius' penknife.
He quickly cut the ropes binding Daphne, before holding her by the waist.
After making sure he had a good hold on her, Harry thought: 'Ascendio!'
A few minutes earlier…
Astoria Greengrass was worried. She had been unable to find her sister all morning, and she was fearing something horrible.
At the same time, she was wondering what Harry would 'sorely miss'. He had told her he had few objects belonging to his parents, so that may have been it. The firebolt was very important for him too, so that could have been used as well.
It was at this point, that Bagman spoke:
"Well, now that everyone is working on the task, why don't we tell our spectators what are they searching for?"
"Ah yes, of course." Dumbledore replied. "The champions will be looking for what they will sorely miss. Well, not a 'what' to be honest. They will be looking for a 'who'. Each champion will be trying to rescue a hostage."
"That certainly adds to the drama, Headmaster! And who are those special people?"
Astoria had a bad feeling about this.
"Mister Diggory will have to rescue miss Chang. Miss Delacour will be rescuing her younger sister. As for Mister Krum, he will rescue Miss Granger. And finally, Mister Potter will be rescuing Miss Greengrass."
"Interesting! So they will have to rescue their romantic partners, except for Miss Delacour, who will rescue her sister… That certainly incentivises them to be quick, doesn't it?"
Astoria was going to kill Daphne. Who did she think she was, making her worry like that?
"Indeed, it does! Specially considering that their clue gave them one hour, because if they weren't quick enough, they would lose it forever."
There was an uncomfortable silence after that comment. Which is the reason, Dumbledore quickly added:
"But there is no need to worry. If the champions find themselves unable to rescue their hostage, chief Merman Marcus will bring them up himself."
Astoria sighed in relief. Still, if Harry failed to rescue her sister, there would be a double murder at Hogwarts.
Harry and Daphne emerged from the lake. He had done it!
"And Mr. Potter has been the first champion to return with his hostage! With a time of 36 minutes, he will surely stay on the lead!"
It was at this point, that Daphne woke up from her enchanted sleep. Harry felt her holding onto him, as if she were one of those koalas in his old textbooks.
"Is it done? Are we done? How did you do?"
"It is over, Daphne. I finished first. I won!"
"Good, good! Now bring me to the platform! I am freezing!"
Harry quickly obeyed his girlfriend's orders. Soon enough, she was standing on the platform, with a towel wrapped around her shoulders. Harry tried to ignore the way her wet clothes accentuated her figure…
"You know, I feel appalled to see that my boyfriend can't take his eyes off me, but could you at least try to dissimulate a bit? It's a little embarrassing!"
Harry looked back to the lake, blushing. He had been caught, there was no denying…
"You don't need to stay here. I took enough gillyweed for an hour, so there are still a few minutes left…"
"Okay. I will go and get changed meanwhile. Thank Merlin they offered to keep some of our clothes for us to change after the task…"
After Daphne left, Harry realised there was someone else in the platform, who wasn't supposed to be here:
"Fleur? What are you doing here?!"
"Grindylows…" She grumbled. "We don't have those in France, and we never learned 'ow to fight them. One of them caught me distracted and…"
Fleur lifted her arm, showing a long (and still fresh) scar that ran along it. Harry now understood what had happened.
"That blood around the algae, that was you, wasn't it?"
"Oui. I 'ad to rush back to the surface, since healing magic doesn't work underwater. Poor Gabrielle, still under the lake…"
Harry tried to calm her down, but knew that she wouldn't truly relax until her sister was back at the surface.
Now he would get to spectate the rest of the task. That was going on underwater… Honestly, why did Dumbledore think this would be entertaining?
Harry and Daphne were on their way to the stands, where Harry had seen the Gryffindors sitting. Moody had been nice enough to give him a counter agent for the gillyweed, so Harry didn't need to spend the rest of the task in the water. He didn't know how his professor got that in so little time…
Anyways, they had made it to the correct area, and Harry asked for some space.
"I have an older sister shipment for one Astoria Greengrass. Anyone has seen her?"
"Here!" Astoria said. She walked towards them and punched Harry in the arm. She then moved him away to do the same with Daphne:
"I cannot believe either of you! Do you know how worried I was?! I searched for you all morning!" Astoria exclaimed at her sister.
"I didn't tell you, so you didn't need to worry… And it worked out fine, didn't it?"
"You are fine yes, but my heartbeat wasn't! And YOU…" She added, pointing at Harry. "YOU think you are so funny, do you? 'She'll be by the lake!' 'I'll drag her here if necessary…' I know it was her plan, but why did you follow along? What happened to 'pals before gals'?"
Daphne looked at Harry too, questioningly.
"First of all, that gal is your sister. Which probably means an exception for the rule. And second of all… Would it have changed anything, really? She would have ended down there regardless…"
"Maybe! But that doesn't mean I am not disappointed in both of you! Didn't you trust me with this?"
Harry and Daphne looked at each other, not really knowing what to say. Until Daphne came up with an idea:
"Would… Two chocolate orange bars from Honeydukes be enough for forgiving us?"
"Three. EACH. Then I may also forget to talk about it to mum and dad…"
"Fine…" Daphne agreed. "Now that the issue is solved, have you really spent most of an hour looking at the surface of a lake with no entertainment?"
Yes. It has been a while. I have struggled a lot with this last chapter, to be honest. I have to say, that I have been able to write other things. You may have already read 'A lost bet' , but it isn't the only think I've been working on. I will post again this week, most likely.
And yes. Astoria knows about the bro-code (in his case, is it the sis-code?). Or whatever similar thing wizards have. She cares about Harry, similarly to how Hermione does.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the chapter, and keep following for more!
