Penelope got started on her new task, one of her specialties—- weeding out a suspect from a list of thousands of potential names. She did her best to give JJ something to do that she felt could be of help to her, but the analyst really worked best as a one-woman machine.
JJ watched Penelope as she started typing away at an unbelievable speed. The noise of the clack-clack-clacking on the keyboard mixed with the rhythmic movements of her fingers and switching screens drew JJ into a trance. She had the case file open in front of her, but it was like she was looking through it. Her mind started racing. Every now and then Garcia took a look over her shoulder at her friend. Something was seriously wrong. She felt so torn…her job was right there and in front of her. And it was urgent. Just like any case that comes their way. But she'd also promised Emily that she would keep an eye on the brunette's wife. Her best friend.
JJ's mind kept replaying the same scenes over and over. The positive pregnancy test. The hesitation of sending a text to Emily, but deciding on waiting to surprise her. Then it was flashes of the dry, blazing hot desert and a sudden explosion that came to an end quickly, with darkness. JJ hates those missing hours. The hours of darkness where the promise of life inside of her was taken from her, and she wasn't even conscious as it happened. Maybe it was better that way, she thought. But waking up, for a split second thinking, "thank god, I'm alive, I'm okay" and then seeing the somber look in Cruz's eyes… she couldn't say which was worse. Everything was just awful. And she swore the pain she felt then was just as bad if not worse months and months later.
Pain. JJ was suddenly taken out of her trance when she heard her phone ping! It felt like it rang straight through her ears, bounced around her whole brain and then landed right in between eyebrows and behind her eyes. She was starting to get a bad headache. She took out her phone from her back pocket and looked at the screen cautiously. It was Emily.
E: Hi baby. Just checking in. How are things going? love you
JJ's lips turned upwards into a slight smile until a pulsing, throbbing pain shook through her head again. She squeezed her eyes shut and brought both of her hands up to her temples, dropping the phone in the process. She took a deep breath in and let it out slowly through a small O shape of her lips, willing the headache away. God it hurt bad.
Penelope turned in her swivel chair to face her friend and saw she was hunched over the desk she'd set up at, phone and file fully abandoned. In fact, she'd been so distracted in her tech world as usual, she'd almost forgotten the blonde was there at all.
Keep an eye on her, Pen, would you?
"Jayje?" she asked softly, realizing pretty quickly that JJ was either in pain or maybe anxious or both? She walked closer to JJ's slumped form and crouched down next to her so that she could see her face through the forearms shakily holding up her throbbing head. Garcia placed a hand on JJ's knee, so softly, but the touch still caused a slight flinch in her. Once she relaxed into it, Garcia rubbed her knee slowly, back and forth in a circular motion. She didn't get an answer.
"Hey JJ? Can you tell me what's wrong?" she pleaded quietly, watching her friend moving her palms up and down her forehead, temples, and eyes. It was obvious at this point she was suffering from a headache. A migraine even, maybe. But not getting a response was startling.
Garcia could feel tears starting to prick the backs of her eyes. She hated seeing anyone she loved in pain. She felt it deeply and would do anything to take it all away. There was so much going on with JJ, more than this headache, but she knew in time she'd know. It was killing her though.
"Can I get you some tea?" she tried. "Or water?" No answer.
"Would an ice pack help?" she tried again.
Finally, she got a nod and she was relieved to not feel completely helpless.
"Give me one sec!" the analyst yelled, halfway out of the door.
JJ dropped her neck, shoulders and head even further down into her elbows until she gave in and rested her head on her arms. Succumbing to the relief and slight decrease in pain, she decided she'd take a small nap on the couch in Emily's room since she could practically fall asleep sitting at this desk.
JJ gathered her things and pushed in her chair as Penelope was walking back in with an ice pack, water and bottle of ibuprofen.
"JJ? Are you ok? Where are you going?"
"Yeah, Pen, I'm fine I'm just going to rest in Emily's office." she replied, almost apologetically. She didn't want to disrupt the work being done, while she, excited as she was to get back into the action, felt absolutely horrible, and absolutely useless.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, seriously I'm practically just added furniture to your office, I'm no help right now" JJ replied with a quiet, forced laugh.
Before Garcia could even counter JJ, the blonde agent had already left the office and towards Emily's couch. It was calling her name.
I think I feel like making an angsty chapter next. Thank you for all the reviews they mean a lot and I love to hear what you think!
