My eyes fluttered open, and I could tell it was light outside. Time to get up. I sat up in the bed and stretched. "Ah." I said out loud. That was a good sleep. I don't think I slept that good since before the turn happened.
I should look for a Starbucks or some other coffee shop, maybe they will have some bags of coffee that I could make.
Just then, I heard the sound of like bumping and scratching and also moans. My eyes widened a little and I looked around briefly. I couldn't tell where it was coming from, but I obviously knew what it was. Pulling out my gun, I began slowly walking around the store.
I gasped and almost dropped my gun. There was a huge herd of walkers that were crowding outside the glass doors trying to get in! Good thing the doors were locked. I wonder if they saw me come in or if they were before? I think I would've heard them last night if they were there.
Either way…it was time to go. And I wasn't leaving out that way. I would have to get out how I got in.
I gathered up my bags and hurried out of that store and headed towards the doors that I came in, which was on the complete opposite side of the mall.
Narrator's POV
"We have to start looking for her." Rick Grimes told everyone. "We all split up." The worried father pulled out a map of the area. "Glenn, you take these streets." He showed him on the map. "Maggie, you take these ones. Daryl will take them. Michonne take those. Carol these ones. I'll take them." He told everyone. "We all meet up back at this spot." He pointed to an area on the map.
"Shouldn't someone stay here with Carl?" Michonne asked. "And what if she comes back?"
Rick almost shook his head, the man wasn't thinking clearly. He was worried about his daughter at the moment. "Yeah, you're right."
"I'll stay." Carol volunteered. "You all go. Just be careful."
Rick gave the older woman a nod. "Thank you." He pulled out his gun. "The rest of you, let's go."
They all headed out in search of Abby. They thought it was reminiscent of looking for Sophia.
Abby's POV
My bike was right where I left it. It was a little more difficult to pedal a bike with two heavy bags on your back, but I managed. I had to walk the bike up the steep hill that led to the mall, but once I got to the top, I could ride again.
I almost missed my turn and had to brake quickly. I remembered turning right up here when there wasn't anywhere else to go. I rode down that hill passed a cemetery, so far, everything looked familiar.
I traveled a little farther and decided that I didn't want to go home yet so I stopped at one of these houses. Maybe I could find some more stuff. It just now occurred to me that, the stuff I got at the mall was only for me. I should probably try to find something useful while I'm out.
I picked a house, made sure it was clear, then went in. It was a nice, little house. It wasn't anything extravagant, but it was cute. I left my bags by the door and laid down on the couch. I wanted to rest up a little before searching the house for any goods. I laid down and closed my eyes, I didn't want to fall asleep, just rest.
Well…I ended doing exactly what I didn't want to do. I fell asleep and took a little nap. It's weird though because I wasn't really tired, I slept good last night. It must have been all that pedaling on the bike.
After that, I searched the house for anything that could be useful.
Narrator's POV
Glenn was the fastest out of the group so he reached the vantage point before anyone else. He had no luck in finding the girl or even any clues that she was ever there. Michonne showed up next and her story was the same as Glenn's. Daryl was there next followed by Maggie. Rick searched the longest, for obvious reasons, so he arrived last. His face fell when he saw the others and his daughter not with them. For a while, no one said anything.
"That was the whole area, Rick." Glenn said. "What do we do now?"
"There's tons more places to check." The father said.
"Not today there's not." Said Michonne. "We only have a couple hours of daylight left."
"I'm not going back yet." Rick said.
"Rick, this neighborhood is big. She could be anywhere." Glenn said. "She might not even be in the neighborhood."
"He's right." Said Maggie. "We don't even know what time it was that she left. She could be miles away."
"Look, we'll go back out first thing tomorrow." Glenn said. "We started late today. Tomorrow will be better."
Rick knew that the others were right, but he really wanted to find his daughter. He was really worried about her and he knew that the longer she's out there the more danger she's in. The man looked to Daryl.
Daryl gave his friend a nod. "I know yer worried about 'er, we all are. But…no use wanderin' around aimlessly in the dark."
Rick put his head down and sighed. "Alright." He said quietly. "Yeah, let's go home." Daryl gave Rick's shoulder a squeeze as he walked by him. They all headed back to the house.
Abby's POV
I just finished searching the whole house, it was just beginning to get dark. I found some really neat stuff though. In the master bedroom, I actually found a small handgun. That's definitely useful. There was only one other bedroom and there wasn't much inside but I did find some batteries. I found some feminine supplies in the bathroom and some other medical items. Then down in the kitchen, I found matches, a lighter and more batteries. I also found some boxes of snacks. In the basement, I found some bullets for the gun and I found a small ax. My dad might want that.
I found the best thing of all in the living room though. There was a bunch of tools for the fireplace, one of them was really sharp. It gave me an idea. I took the fire poke and went outside.
Looking around, I didn't see any walkers. I whistled loudly and waited. A few minutes later, I heard snarling and one was coming towards me. It wasn't exactly tall, but it was taller than me. The fire poke was long though, so I didn't have to kick its knee to make it go down. I aimed for the eye and stabbed as hard as I could. It penetrated without much effort and killed the walker.
My eyes widened and I smiled at my new best friend. "Cool." I said nodding and looking at it. I could use this until I was strong enough to stab them with a knife.
I put my book aside and laid back on the couch. I was enjoying my alone time away from everyone else. However, I knew I would have to go home eventually. This was sort of like a little vacation away from home.
I started to feel hungry after that and ate the few snacks that I found in that house. It didn't tide me over for very long so I decided to make some of the noodles that I found at that soup place in the mall. I cooked them over the gas stove and made ramen. It was very good.
Narrator's POV
Rick Grimes was staring out the window while the others were eating. He was so worried that he couldn't eat. The man just kept wishing that his daughter would walk through the door right now. And that she would be okay. Something tells him that that isn't going to happen though. He was almost certain that something happened to her.
The others were talking amongst themselves, except Michonne. She glanced over at the worried father staring out the window. The woman knew what it was like to worry about your kid. She had a son once. She decided to talk to the man.
She walked over to him with a plate of food. "Hey." She said to him, he turned to her. "You didn't eat. Here."
"Yeah." Rick breathed out. "I don't think I can."
The woman gave him a look. "You know, worrying and not taking care of yourself isn't going to do her any good. If you wanna find her, then you need to keep your strength up." She handed him the plate.
Rick thought about what she just said and took the plate this time. "You're right." He began to eat. "Thank you."
Abby's POV
I slept on the couch that night. Or I should say, tried to sleep. I kept tossing and turning the whole time. Something was bothering me. Deep down, I knew what it was but didn't want to admit it.
Finally, I gave up and sighed. I sat up, then looked out the window at the moon. "Why are you doing this to me?" I asked the moon. "They all blamed for something that I didn't do. No one had my back." I looked down. "Well…my dad did. I bet he's worried about me." The guilt was starting to get to me, which was making me angry because I didn't want to feel like the wrong one. "Gurr." I said angrily. "Okay, fine. I'll go home, okay?" I said to the moon. "Now please let me sleep." I laid back down and got comfortable. Eventually, I was able to drift off to sleep.
Narrator's POV
It was now the next day and the others were discussing their plan to go look for Abby. This was a big area so it would be difficult, as they already knew. They were looking over the map again and planning out their search.
"What about this church down here." Daryl pointed.
"I checked in there yesterday while waiting for you guys at the vantage point." Glenn reciprocated.
Maggie was being quiet while the others were talking. "Maggie?" Glenn took notice to the look on his girlfriend's face. "What is it?"
The young woman hesitated, they all waited to hear what she had to say. "…I thank this is pointless." She shook her head. "I thank she's gonna come back and we're just wastin' our time."
Glenn, Daryl and Michonne just stared at her. Rick was the one to respond. "That night," he began, "she was really upset. She asked if we could leave, meaning me, her and Carl. I told she was being ridiculous and she said she would leave then." He informed everyone. They all took in what he said. "Which means, she ran away. And I don't know if she's comin' back." He put his head down for a moment. "Either way, that's my daughter and it's dangerous out there."
"I'm sorry." Maggie finally said.
Daryl Dixon thought for a minute. "Okay." The man spoke. "Abby's smart, but let's face it…she's still a kid. So, if she really ran away like you say, then where do you thank she'd go? It's yer kid, man."
Rick hadn't thought about that before. If he were a kid and ran away from home, he would go someplace fun. An idea hit him just then. "That amusement park." The man pointed out. "It's only like…five minutes away from here by car."
"Yeah, I seen it." Daryl said.
"You sure about this?" Maggie said. "That's a big place and there's only the five of us. Seems dangerous."
"We'll be fine." Daryl answered before Rick could. "Unless y'all wanna stay back. Y'all cain't track fer shit anyway." He tapped Rick's shoulder. "Come on, man." Rick followed Daryl out the door. Michonne went next. Glenn gave his girlfriend a look, she sighed feeling irritated, then they joined the others.
Abby's POV
I was able to fit all the stuff I found in that house in my bags now that the noodles and snacks were gone. I made more noodles for breakfast before leaving that house. When I was about to head out the door, something caught my eye.
There was a hook on the wall that held some keys. I looked out the window at the car parked in the driveway. "No way." I said out loud. I grabbed the keys and headed out.
I got the car started. I didn't know how to drive yet but how hard can it actually be?
I put the car in reverse then slowly pressed down on the gas. I barely moved. I gave it more pressure and flew backwards. "Oh shit!" I yelled. I slammed on the brakes making a full stop and jolted forward a little. Maybe this isn't as easy as I thought.
I tried backing out again but slower. This time I succeeded. However, I turned the wheel in the opposite direction and had to correct that.
It took me a while to get out of that situation, but I eventually did and was on the road. When I first turned onto the street, I started driving on the opposite side of the road and hit the neighbor's mailbox. "Sorry." I said even though they weren't there. I swerved back onto the road and was now going straight.
I kept slamming on the brakes while driving because I would go too slow so I would give it some gas and then go way too fast. I had to make a really wide turn at one point too, and almost crashed into a rock wall.
After a while though, I started to get the hang of it. It wasn't so bad anymore. I mean…I was doing it. It beats riding on that bike…or walking.
I should be home in no time now.
I made a wrong turn while on my way home, I was supposed to go straight but for some reason I thought I was supposed to turn left. I realized that nothing looked familiar here and knew that meant that I went the wrong way.
I was looking for a place to turn around when I spotted this big building on top of a hill next to a shopping center. It was a movie theater, I think. However, I saw that the other half of the building was a trampoline park.
My face lit up and the kid in me really wanted to go there. So, I drove up to that building and parked my car.
I couldn't see in the window because they were tinted, so I just took my chances and went inside. There weren't any visible walkers that I could see from here. So, I just went right into the trampoline park.
It was dark inside but I could see enough. Those soft gym balls littered the floor in there. I walked out onto the platform with the trampolines and looked around. So far so good.
I stepped out onto one of them and felt it. Then, I jumped once. "Ha." I let out a small laugh. I jumped some more and hopped onto the different platforms. It was actually pretty fun.
I ran and jumped around the whole place and did flips and was having a good ole time. I'm glad I made that wrong turn and came here. This was a really good idea. I'll have to tell my dad about this so we can take Carl here. I bet he'd love it.
I've been here for a couple of hours now and was starting to get tired of it. At some point, I noticed that there was a little office room inside the trampoline park that had two walkers in it. They were trapped inside though, they kept banging on the window trying to get at me.
I thought it was kind of funny so I stood there and stared at them while eating a bag of chips that I found in the cafe. I got a funny idea and held a chip up to one of their mouth's. It made me laugh.
Just then, I heard a crack and stopped laughing. Another one was heard and I looked up. The glass was breaking. My eyes widened.
Before I could react, the glass shattered. I screamed and quickly put my arm over my face to protect my eyes. I had bigger problems than a few cuts from glass. The walkers were climbing out of the window and coming to get me.
"Oh shit!" I yelled and backed up. They followed me. I backed up some more without looking behind me and accidentally fell right into the foam pit. I screamed.
The walkers fell in after me. "Oh shit! Oh fuck!" I cried. I crawled away as fast as I could. They were still coming. I picked up one of the foam bricks and threw it at it, it hit it right in the face. I would have laughed if I wasn't in a life or death situation right now.
I finally crawled to the edge and I was about to get out, one of them grabbed my foot though. "No!" I yelled. I tried kicking the shit out of it but it wasn't working. I finally just let it take my shoe and got out. It started to get out as well, so I didn't waste anymore time and pulled out my gun and shot it dead. I killed the other one too.
Finally, I was able to breathe. It was over. And I was still alive. I hunched over and caught my breath. That was a close one. I looked down at my sock foot. My boot must have sunk down in the foam pit because it was nowhere in sight, and I wasn't about to jump in there and look for it. So much for my Louis Vuitton boots. I thought and sighed. Maybe I'll be able to get another pair one day.
I went behind the counter where you put your shoes and found a pair of sneakers that fit me. That should do. They're not any Louis Vuittons, but…at least I won't have to go home bare foot. I sighed again.
Speaking of home, I think it was time to go there. I headed out of the building and got back to my car. It would be dark soon. I must have been there longer than I thought. Oh well. I'm not that far away, I think. I should be home before dark.
Narrator's POV
Rick and the rest of the group just got back to the house. Everyone was exhausted. The amusement had been a bust. Abby wasn't there, but walkers were. All it was was a lot of trouble. Rick almost felt stupid for suggesting it. He put everyone at risk by going there. Luckily, no one got hurt.
"Well, that was fun." Glenn said sarcastically. They were all in the dining room at Rick's house.
"Are you all alright?" Carol asked them, she had stayed home to look after Carl.
"Yeah, we're fine." Daryl answered in a rough tone. "But we didn't find 'er."
"It was a bad idea." Said Rick. "And I'm sorry." He said it quietly.
"It weren't yer fault." Daryl said again. "It was a good try at least."
There was a brief pause. Rick kept his head down and started shaking it. "I don't know where else to look."
"Hey, we'll find 'er, man, we'll find 'er." Daryl tried to reassure the worried father.
"I still thank she'll come back on 'er own." Said Maggie.
"Rick said she said—
"I know." Maggie cut her boyfriend off. "But there's so many places to check around here!"
"Which is why we gotta keep lookin'." Said Daryl.
"I kind of agree with Maggie." Carol chimed in. Daryl gave the older woman a surprised look.
"I do too." Said Michonne.
There was a brief pause. "Look, it ain't the mountains 'a Tibbet, it's a neighborhood." Daryl snapped. "We only just started lookin' yesterday. What the hell's 'a matter with y'all?"
"Well she'll either come back on her own or she's dead!" Maggie snapped. Daryl gave the young woman an angry look. He couldn't believe that she would say something like that in front of the girl's dad. Maggie, too, felt bad. "Rick, I didn't mean—
"What ya meant is ya don't wanna look fer 'er!" Daryl snapped. "Maybe you don't want us to find 'er!"
It was unfair, he knew but in that moment he was angry. Maggie gave him an incredulous look.
"Hey, back off, Daryl!" Glenn defended his girlfriend.
"How can you say that?" Said Maggie.
The whole group was now yelling at each other. They were so involved in their argument that they didn't even hear the back door open.
Abby's POV
Instead of wandering around aimlessly trying to find my way back another way, I just decided to turn back where I made my mistake. I turned down the road that I was originally supposed to take.
I traveled straight down that road for a while, things were looking more familiar. Once I made it to the bridge, I knew I was on the right path. I would be home in few minutes now.
I parked the car in front of the house next door because there was already two cars parked outside our house. I turned the car off and sat there for a minute before going in. How was I even going to do this? I mean…I've been gone for like three days. It's probably going to be awkward just walking in.
I looked over at my bags that were stuffed to the max and got a funny idea. I dug out the two items that I needed and got out.
I decided to go around the house to the back for some reason. I walked right in with my two bags on my back, one strap on each shoulder, then walked into the dining room where I heard voices. It sounded like they were arguing or something.
"I would never think somethin' like that!" Maggie said.
"Well, it sure seems like ya do!" Daryl yelled back.
No one even noticed me when I first walked in. I sat down a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates on the table. "Who wants wine and chocolate?" I asked with a huge grin. They all stopped and looked at me. They all had similar looks on their faces and just stared me. My smile faded. "What?"
XD
