Everyone knows about Lin's weakness for roasted newts. It's a fact of life, just like Yubaba's tightfistedness, just like Kamajii's being a grumpy old man and just like Haku being a cold, arrogant, unnerving spirit.
Lin doesn't get roasted newts very often; when she does she hoards them until the evening, savoring each bite while sitting at the railings, watching the train she longs so much to board fly away down the tracks.
Feeling the soft air hit her face and cool her aching shoulders, watching the moon glimmer on the surface of a shallow sea and feeling roasted newt fill her belly, Lin actually feels something akin to contentment.
She'd almost forgot what that feels like.
