"I think I'm pregnant…"
Her words break as she swallows thickly, not sure how Owen will react.
"Wha-what?" He manages to get out.
"Yeah!" Teddy wipes her tears and sits up straight, "I'm late…my periods have always been a little inconsistent, especially after having Allison but, I'm eleven days late. I've been nauseous every day this week, and I have this pounding headache that won't go away no matter how much water I down and ibuprofen I pop…"
"But…we? We've been using condoms…"
Teddy snorts while shooting Owen a sarcastic glare.
"Owen. Seriously? You know condoms break. They're only 97% effective! You're a physician, why am I explaining this to you?" She laughs, nervously.
Owen, still slightly in shock with the possibility of becoming a father again, simply nods.
"Have you taken a test yet?" He asks.
"No…I…I honestly didn't really think about the possibility until tonight. I thought it was just stress, you know, adapting to running a hospital again and then, the attack…but now…" She looks at him with tears in her eyes again.
"We should get a blood test, tomorrow. Just to be 100% sure. A blood test will give a clear, correct result on the first try. Those home pregnancy tests suck." He laughs.
"Okay…Owen?" She asks.
"Yeah?"
"How would you feel, you know, about having another baby? Because we just got our lives back on track, we have two small kids already, our work schedules are insane and…you know, we're both in our mid 40's…"
Owen cuts off her rambling and takes her hands in his.
"Teddy, Teddy! I'm sorry. I'm just a little in shock. And nothing would make me happier than having another baby with you! I'm just trying to contain my excitement until we're 100% sure. I don't want us to be disappointed…I remember we were trying right after we got married and…"
"I know…the miscarriage." She says quietly.
"But hey…that was so early on…if you are pregnant…you could be farther along than we were at that point and that should put our minds at ease a bit." He reassures her.
"Yeah…I started bleeding…a lot. I thought it was my regular period until the cramping became unbearable and then I passed that…"
"Honey, honey," Owen stops her, "you don't have to relive it. Why don't we just stay positive and focus on the possibility of bringing another beautiful, healthy baby into this world?"
"Okay." She smiles and kisses Owen deeply.
The next morning, Teddy woke up promptly at 5:30 A.M. She was anxious, definitely. But also really, really excited about the possibility of her and Owen to be expecting again.
It would be so different this time around, she thought to herself as she prepared a decaf cup of coffee, just in case, and took a seat at her kitchen counter, scrolling through the countless emails she received overnight.
"Hey…" Owen says groggily as he joins her in the kitchen.
"Hey," she smiles and kisses him good morning.
"You're up early," he says.
"Yeah…nerves." She smiles nervously.
He nods in understanding.
"Well, we'll know soon enough."
"There's some coffee left in the pot, but it's decaf…you know, just in case. I don't want our potential third kid to have two heads." She giggles.
Owen just snorts, pours himself the rest of the coffee and takes a seat next to his wife, rubbing her back to calm her evident nerves.
"What are you thinking?" He asks.
Teddy looks towards him with tears forming in her jade green eyes.
"I'm thinking…that I really want this. I want to have your baby again. I want to experience every single moment with you. Every appointment, every kick, everything we didn't get to have before. I want Leo and Allison to have a little brother or sister to love and guide in this crazy world. I want the family we always talked about." She gushes.
Owen beams at her words. He wants this too. So much. More than he even realized. He loved his little girl so much, but it's true, there is so much that he missed out on the first time around. Him and Teddy weren't even together…it was messy. Now, things could be completely different and his heart threatened to burst at the possibility of second chance experience.
There are no words. He just cups her face in his hands, wipes away her tears and kisses her deeply.
Shortly after, Leo and Allison join their parents in the kitchen.
"Can we have pancakes?" Allison asks rubbing her eyes sleepily.
Owen scoops her up, kissing her chubby cheek good morning.
"I don't think we have time for pancakes, maybe on Saturday. How about some Honey Nut Cheerios? Your favorite." He suggests.
"Okay." Allison agrees.
"Can I have banana in my cereal?" Leo asks.
"Sure baby." Teddy smiles and grabs a banana to slice up for her son.
By 7:45 the family of four are ready to tackle the day and head to Grey Sloan.
Once the kids are settled in daycare, Teddy and Owen head up to her office, with a lab kit secretly in toe.
"So I'll draw your blood, run it under Jane Doe and put a rush on the results?" Owen asks.
"You don't have to run it under an anonymous name, my name is fine." She laughs.
"But what if an intern or someone sees it?"
Teddy gives him a questionable look.
"So?"
"I just figured that you don't want anyone else to know that you're pregnant before we do…" He replies.
"True…alright, run it under Jane Doe."
Owen smiles and nods in agreement while setting up the kit and asking his wife to make a fist.
"Deep breath," he instructs. He knows that despite being a surgeon, she hates large needles and getting her blood drawn.
"Done!" He says after about 30 seconds.
"Okay." She smiles.
"So, like I said, I'll put a rush on these and I'll page you when they're ready. I gotta head down to the pit." He says.
"And I have to access the damage to the windows in the clinic and figure how much that repair is going to cost, thanks to the upholding citizen who through a brick through it…" Teddy rolls her eyes.
Owen shook his head in disgust.
"Well, have fun with that," he says and kisses her goodbye, "I'll see you later. I love you."
"I love you so much. See you later…"
