Chapter 5

I could feel my heart pounding with excitement as we left the Great Hall and began our journey toward the Ravenclaw Tower. We first years were told to follow a Ravenclaw prefect and as we made our way through the dimly lit corridors, I marvelled at the enchanted torches that lit our path, their flickering flames casting eerie shadows on the walls. The corridors of Hogwarts were a labyrinth of twists and turns, and I was grateful to have the Prefect as our guide.

As we walked, the older students chatted amongst themselves, while the first-years whispered in awe at the sights around them. We passed numerous portraits lining the walls, with the subjects waving or nodding at us as we passed by. I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder at the sheer magic that permeated every corner of the castle.

Our group soon reached the base of an enormous staircase – the Grand Staircase. I had heard stories of this magical feature from my parents, but seeing it in person was truly breathtaking. The vast, marble staircase seemed to stretch on forever, with countless steps and landings connecting the various floors and corridors of the castle. What made it even more astonishing was the fact that the staircases moved, shifting and rearranging themselves periodically.

The first-years gasped and stared wide-eyed as we watched a staircase glide from one landing to another, connecting two previously separate areas. The Ravenclaw Prefect, noticing our reactions, chuckled and said, "Don't worry, you'll get used to the moving staircases in no time. Just be mindful of where you step and always be prepared for a bit of a detour."

We tentatively began to ascend the staircase, our eyes darting back and forth to ensure we didn't end up on a moving step. As we climbed higher and higher, I couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of joy and anticipation. The magic of Hogwarts seemed to seep into my very bones, filling me with the knowledge that I was finally where I belonged.

At last, we reached the corridor that led to the Ravenclaw common room. The Prefect turned to us with a proud smile and said, "Welcome to your new home, Ravenclaws. I hope you find it as enchanting and inspiring as I do."

As we approached the entrance to the Ravenclaw common room, I noticed that the door was quite unique. Located at the top of a spiral staircase, the door was devoid of a doorknob or keyhole. Instead, it featured a bronze knocker shaped like an eagle.

Our Ravenclaw Prefect, a tall, confident boy with auburn hair, stepped up to the door and addressed the eagle knocker, "We have some new students who need access to the common room."

The eagle knocker came to life, its eyes gleaming as it spoke, "Very well. To gain entry, you must solve this riddle: What has keys but can't open locks?"

The first-years exchanged nervous glances, unsure of the answer. After a moment of thought, I hesitantly offered my answer, "A piano?"

The eagle knocker nodded, its eyes shining with approval. "Correct. You may enter." The door swung open, revealing the breathtaking Ravenclaw common room.

The common room was one of the most enchanting and airy spaces I had ever seen. The wide, circular room was adorned with graceful arched windows that filled the space with natural light. Blue and bronze silk curtains hung from the walls, complementing the midnight blue carpet that was covered in a pattern of twinkling stars. These stars were reflected onto the domed ceiling, creating an illusion of infinite depth.

Blue tables, chairs, and a divan were scattered throughout the room, offering comfortable places for students to study, relax, or socialize. Near the door leading to the dormitories, a tall, white marble statue of Rowena Ravenclaw stood proudly. The sound of wind whistling around the windows created a soothing, calming atmosphere.

The walls were decorated with portraits of famous Ravenclaws, their wise gazes seeming to follow us as we entered the room. What truly captivated me, however, was the library within the common room. It was almost as large as the library in Thornwood Manor and housed nearly twice as many books.

As we entered the common room, the prefect gathered us around and began to explain the house rules. "Welcome to Ravenclaw, everyone! In our common room, we prioritize learning, creativity, and respect for one another. Please remember to keep noise levels down, especially during study hours. If you need help with your studies or have questions about anything, don't hesitate to ask your fellow housemates or the prefects."

He continued, "Our dormitories are located up the stairs, with separate rooms for boys and girls. You'll find your belongings have already been brought up. Curfew is at 10 pm on weekdays and midnight on weekends. Please make sure you are in the common room or dormitories by then."

As I took in the sights and sounds of the Ravenclaw common room, I felt a sense of pride and belonging swell within me. This magical, inspiring space was now my home away from home, and I couldn't wait to see what adventures and discoveries awaited me within its walls.

Emily, who was still marveling at the room, turned to me and said, "Can you believe we're actually here, Cyrus? It's like a dream come true!"

"I know," I replied, my eyes still taking in every detail. "I can't wait to explore every corner of this place and learn everything I can."

Together, we joined our fellow first-years in settling into our new home, eager to begin our journey at Hogwarts as proud members of Ravenclaw House.

As the evening began to wind down, the Ravenclaw prefect guided us toward the dormitories, explaining that we would be separated by gender. The girls and boys would each have six bedrooms, with three beds in each room. Emily and I exchanged goodbyes before parting ways, heading to our respective dormitories.

"Goodnight, Cyrus. I'll see you in the morning," Emily said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Goodnight, Emily," I replied, trying to hide the uneasiness that crept up inside me as I noticed her Muggle wristwatch. The sight of the watch sent a twinge of unease through me, as it seemed so out of place in the magical world of Hogwarts.

Pushing the thoughts aside, I couldn't help but wonder how my childhood friends Alexander and Isabella were faring in their Gryffindor and Hufflepuff dormitories, respectively. The three of us had been inseparable since we met long before the train, and now we were going to be separated, each of us finding our own paths in our new houses.

I entered the boys' dormitory, which was as impressive as the rest of the common room. The circular room was decorated with more blue and bronze silks, and the same starry carpet covered the floor. Large windows offered a stunning view of the Hogwarts grounds, and the domed ceiling continued the theme of twinkling stars from the common room.

I walked into the bedroom I would be sharing with two other first-years named Ethan and Oliver. The room was cozy and inviting, with three four-poster beds draped in midnight blue hangings. Each bed was positioned next to a large window, allowing us to fall asleep under the stars. A small bedside table, a wardrobe, and a desk accompanied each bed, providing space for our belongings and study materials.

As we got ready for bed, Ethan and Oliver shared stories of their families and backgrounds. I listened intently, occasionally chiming in with my own experiences, trying my best to connect with my new housemates.

Despite the new environment and the emotions swirling within me, I began to feel a sense of camaraderie with the boys. We were all in this together, experiencing the same mixture of excitement and nerves as we embarked on our Hogwarts journey.

As we settled into our beds, the sound of the wind whistling around the windows created a soothing lullaby. I glanced over at Ethan, who was already drifting off to sleep, and then at Oliver, who was reading a book by candlelight. I closed my eyes, focusing on the comforting sounds and sensations of the Ravenclaw dormitory.

My thoughts drifted back to Emily, Alexander, and Isabella, hoping they were adjusting well to their new environments. As sleep began to claim me, I reminded myself that I needed to write a letter to my mother and father tomorrow, sharing my experiences and telling them about my sorting into Ravenclaw. With this I drifted off into a deep, peaceful sleep, ready to face the challenges and adventures that awaited us in the days to come.

In my dream, I found myself back in the Muggle world, surrounded by the jeering faces of the children who had tormented me. They taunted me, their cruel laughter echoing in my ears as they closed in around me. I tried to fight back, but my limbs felt heavy, as if weighed down by invisible chains. Panic rose within me, and I couldn't escape the terrifying sense of helplessness.

Just as the situation seemed hopeless, Emily and the Muggleborn prefect appeared, standing between me and the malicious children. Their faces were filled with determination and courage as they defended me from the relentless onslaught. The Muggleborn prefect raised her wand, casting a shield around us that repelled the attackers, pushing them away from us.

Emily reached out, taking my hand and offering me the support and encouragement that I had longed for in reality. Slowly, the children's taunts faded into the distance, replaced by the calming presence of my new friends. A warmth filled my chest, and I finally felt safe and protected.

With a sudden gasp, I awoke from the dream, my heart pounding in my chest. The early morning light filtered through the window, casting a soft glow across the room. Ethan and Oliver were still sleeping soundly in their beds, undisturbed by my abrupt awakening.

Taking a few deep breaths, I tried to calm myself, pushing the lingering remnants of the nightmare from my mind. I glanced over at the desk beside my bed and remembered my promise to write a letter to my mother and father. Deciding that this would be a good way to distract myself from the lingering emotions, I climbed out of bed, retrieved some parchment, a quill, and ink from my trunk, and began to write.

"Dear Mother and Father,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. My journey to Hogwarts was truly a remarkable experience, filled with moments that I will never forget. I met my wonderful friends on the train and we had a wonderful time, and I must admit that we had some candy to celebrate our journey to Hogwarts. I imagine you are interested to know that Alexander was sorted into Gryffindor, and Isabella was sorted into Hufflepuff. I cannot say I am surprised by this. During the train ride I also met a kind-hearted girl named Emily, who has become a housemate of mine, however she does seem to have a muggle upbringing.

I am delighted to share with you that I have been sorted into Ravenclaw House. The Sorting Hat took its time in determining the best house for me, and I am proud to be part of such an esteemed house known for its wisdom and creativity. Hogwarts is even more magical than you ever described, and I am continually amazed by the wonders that surround me.

My dormitory mates are Ethan Blackwood, a boy from a minor pureblood family, and Oliver Greengrass, the oldest child of the Greengrass family, who as you know hold a similar status to our own. I am looking forward to getting to know them better and learning from their unique perspectives.

I eagerly await your response and hope to hear all about how things are at home. Please give my regards to everyone, and I will write again soon with more news of my adventures at Hogwarts.

With love and affection,

Cyrus"

After completing the letter, I carefully folded it and placed it in an envelope, sealing it with a drop of wax. I decided to send it with my own owl, Artemis, during breakfast, knowing that Mother and Father would be eager to hear about my experiences.

As I finished getting ready for the day, the sound of stirring came from the other beds. Ethan and Oliver were waking up, rubbing the sleep from their eyes and exchanging groggy greetings. We chatted briefly about our first night at Hogwarts and our excitement for the day ahead, before leaving the dormitory together to head towards the Great Hall for breakfast.

As we descended the spiral staircase from the Ravenclaw Tower, I couldn't help but marvel at the breathtaking beauty of Hogwarts once more. The morning sunlight streamed through the windows, casting golden rays across the stone walls and bringing the portraits to life.

We entered the Great Hall, which was already bustling with activity. Students from all four houses chatted animatedly over plates of steaming food, their conversations a cacophony of excitement and anticipation. I scanned the room, hoping to spot my friends from the other houses.

I found Alexander sitting at the Gryffindor table, animatedly talking with his housemates, while Isabella was at the Hufflepuff table, engaged in a lively conversation. I waved at them, receiving warm smiles and waves in return.

Joining my fellow Ravenclaws, I placed my letter on the table, planning to send it with Artemis. I unfastened the small pouch at my waist, where Artemis, my loyal owl, was waiting. She stretched her wings and hopped onto my shoulder, gently nipping my ear in greeting. I whispered to her, asking her to deliver the letter to my parents, and she hooted in affirmation.

The feast before me was a veritable cornucopia of delicious dishes, and I eagerly filled my plate, listening to the conversations around me.

As I ate, I couldn't help but feel a sense of belonging and contentment. Here at Hogwarts, surrounded by new friends and incredible magic.

During breakfast, the different Heads of Houses began to descend from the high table, each carrying a stack of schedules for their respective students. They moved from student to student, handing out schedules and providing brief explanations about the first week of classes. They spent more time with the first years, making sure to properly introduce themselves and to give an overview of each subject.

As the Head of Ravenclaw House, Professor Flitwick approached our table, he greeted us warmly, his voice high-pitched and cheerful.

"Good morning, Ravenclaws! I trust you've had a good night's sleep and are ready to begin your magical education," he said with a twinkle in his eye. "I have your schedules here, and I'll also take a moment to introduce you to our esteemed faculty."

Professor Flitwick handed out the schedules and then began to point out the various professors seated at the high table.

"Over there, we have our Potions Master, Professor Snape," he said, indicating the sallow-skinned man with greasy black hair who had nodded at me during the Sorting Ceremony. "He's a very knowledgeable professor, but I must warn you, he can be quite strict."

Next, he pointed to a plump, motherly-looking witch with greying hair. "That's Professor Sprout, our Herbology teacher and Head of Hufflepuff House. Her lessons are always engaging and hands-on, so be prepared to get your hands dirty."

He then gestured towards a tall, elegant witch with silver-streaked hair. "Meet Professor Selwyn, our Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher for this year. She's a highly skilled duellist and an expert in countering dark magic."

"Hello, Professor Selwyn," we chorused, receiving a nod and a warm smile in return.

Moving on, he pointed out a scholarly-looking wizard with a neatly trimmed beard. "That's Professor Carmichael, our Transfiguration teacher assistant. He often help Professor McGonagall with her lessons but sometimes has his own too. His lessons are known for being challenging, but he's an excellent instructor, and you'll learn a great deal from him."

Next, he directed our attention to a young, energetic witch with short, curly hair. "And there's Professor Fawley, my Charms teacher assistant. She's passionate about her subject and always encourages her students to think creatively. I am very fortunate to have her as my assistant".

Lastly, he gestured to a stern-looking wizard with greying hair and a hawk-like nose. "That's Professor Mordaunt, our History of Magic teacher assistant for Professor Binns. In truth, he is the real teacher and only acts as the assistant for Professor Binns sake. His lessons can be quite detailed, so make sure to take good notes."

As we took in the information, Professor Flitwick encouraged us to ask any questions we might have and to seek help from our teachers and fellow students if needed. We thanked him for the introductions and waved back at him when he left for another group of students.

As I enjoyed my breakfast, I caught sight of Emily sitting a few places away from me, her eyes scanning her new schedule with an excited expression. I decided to seize the opportunity to talk to her, scooting down the bench to sit closer. As I sat down beside Emily, I couldn't help but notice the sparkle in her eyes as she took in the sights and sounds of the Great Hall. She seemed just as excited and awed by the magical world around us as I was.

"Hey, Emily," I greeted her with a grin, "are you excited for our first day of classes?"

Emily looked up, her eyes sparkling. "Hi, Cyrus! Yes, I'm really excited! I can't wait to learn all about magic and everything. It's so much more amazing than I could have ever imagined. Can you believe we're actually here, at Hogwarts?" she asked "Everything is so different from what I'm used to."

I nodded, as her eyes were wide with wonder. "It's incredible, isn't it?". Hesitating for a moment, I decided to ask her directly. "Emily, do you have any... Muggle upbringing?"

She looked at me, her expression instantly becoming guarded. "Yes, I'm actually Muggleborn," she admitted hesitantly, her voice barely above a whisper, the difference stark compared to before.

I fell silent, unsure of how to react to her admission. Emily looked worried, her eyes searching my face for any sign of judgment or disapproval.

After a few moments, I finally spoke, my voice soft and hesitant. "You know, I had a dream last night. I was scared and hurt. You were in it, and you helped me."

Emily's eyes widened in surprise, and she tilted her head, listening intently. "Really?"

"Yeah," I continued, feeling a little embarrassed. "It was... comforting, in a way. I felt safe with you."

Her expression softened, and she gave me a small, hesitant smile. "Thank you, Cyrus. That means a lot to me, especially after hearing some not-so-nice things from a few other students."

I frowned, concerned for my new friend. "What happened?"

She sighed, looking down at her plate. "Some of the students were talking about Muggles and Muggleborns like we're less than them, I later found out that they were purebloods. It was scary and they said hurtful things."

I could see the vulnerability in her eyes, and it made me realize that Emily was in a much more difficult situation than I had initially thought. My heart ached for her, and I reached out to squeeze her hand gently. "Well, Emily, I don't think that way. I'm glad to have you as a friend."

Emily's smile grew, her eyes shining with gratitude. "Thank you, Cyrus. That means the world to me."

As we turned our attention back to the conversations around us, we started chatting about our upcoming classes, excited about the new experiences that lay ahead of us.
