Everything is pitch black. No sounds, No smell. Nothing. He believes he's nowhere to be found nor be known. It's dark, darker, yet darker.

Until, a green spark appears, as if someone is lighting a match. It went on for a minute.

Then, he is surrounded by the green inferno. He felt no heat, but instead he felt cold. Too cold to be the cold night, too cold to be a hurricane, and too cold to be a frosty region of the ice kingdom.

He looked around, and spotted a figure. A tall one he sees. The figure approached him. And there stood the end itself. He wants to run away, but he is frozen. Frozen by the sick green flames, or fear, he couldn't tell.

He kept looking at the figure, afraid that if he lost sight of it, it'd pounce on him like a wild animal.

Then, it spoke "... wake up."

"Dude, wake up."

Finn opened his eyes, he sat up and looked around. As if there was danger that he must escape from. The danger? He couldn't remember.

"Hey, Mertin. You okay?" A voice asked him.

He looked up at the voice who spoke to him and recognized who it was. Dante, he recalls.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just a weird dream." Finn replied.

Dante looked at Finn for a moment, eyebrows raised, and just nodded. "Aight, good. Pack your stuff, you don't want the Centurion chewing your butt again." Says Dante.

Dante's skin tone is dark, brown eyes, and red dyed hair. He is wearing a body armor vest, and under the vest is a khaki military uniform with an insignia of the Longsword corps, the symbol is of course a Longsword that is stuck on a stone.

He then puts on his wolf hood, adding extra protections and hiding his red hair.

Finn gets up his feet and puts on the vest similar to his colleague, instead he's not wearing any khaki uniform, but his light blue shirt, dark blue pants and the less tactical black sneakers. Most likely a budget cut by the higher ups is the reason.

Finn followed Dante back to the main camp of the Expeditionary Force to report back to the centurion. As time went by, the two arrived at the large encampment. Finn sees the legionnaires are gearing up for the long march.

The legions' equipment is pretty much a lookalike of riot gear. A riot helmet with a one-way see-through faceshield, keeping the wearers face hidden, a body armor similar to him but with a pauldron made out of strong fabric that can take a hit from an ax. Some has khaki uniforms underneath their body armor vest, others

had only brought their own shirts and pants.

But among the legionnaires' camp, one stands out is the Centurion. The Centurion is wearing the same equipment that the legionnaire wears, but with bronze plating, and gilded outlines. His helmet is the same as the others, but with a red mohawk sticking at the top of the helmet.

The centurion is standing by the table and looking at the map of the forest they are in. He isn't wearing a helmet so Finn can clearly see the centurion's features. He is bald, has a bushy beard, and he seems to be in his 40's. Finn believes that their commanding officer is a veteran of the Great Expansionist War.

The Great Expansionist War first started a century ago, it only ended twenty-two years ago.

For the last three-hundred years, Grasslandia build up their strength, whether they are militarily, population,

infrastructure, and equipment. They believe they have to be strong to prevent another long centuries of suffering. Therefore, they closed their borders to prevent any foreign intervention.

In the year 897, Grasslandia sent letters in the surrounding kingdoms demanding lands. They declined, and were outraged of course. On the same day the letter was sent, Grasslandia sent their forces to seize the surrounding territories they demanded. It is without a doubt, a brutal war.

Grasslandia's push was slow, but decade by decades, they're gaining more and more territories. The Candy Kingdom's military consists of Banana Guards, marshmallow soldiers, and the Gumball guardians. The Banana guards were incompetent, they are pretty much an easy target, but as years passed they began to improve. Marshmallow soldiers do not have the strength to take on a cohort, but they make up for it for their agility, maneuverability, and small size, making them difficult to kill. Unsurprisingly, the gumball guardians became a devastating foe, only a well aimed cannonball fire to the head, or one of their legs is the only way to bring down. In the 30th year of the war, the rattle balls were introduced; they act as shock troopers, breaking through the formation forcing legionnaires armed with only a gladius and a shield vulnerable to them. Perhaps the only reason Grasslandia managed to push the Candy Kingdom to the Cotton candy forest was because of the rush development of the the rattleballs, causing a huge error of its creation. The rattleballs inability to tell the difference between allies and foes became the saving grace of Grasslandia. As a result, the Candy Kingdom ended up destroying their own line of defense in their southeast border of the grasslands.

As the Bittersweet war (Grasslandia-Candy) rages on, The Breakfast Kingdom, Slime kingdom, and the few minor townships became an obstacle. Grasslandia needed the old factory in the badlands, MO co., the factory was called to maximize their industrial speed, and perhaps reverse engineering the robots for military purposes. They called this war as The War for the badlands.

The Fire Kingdom first started up as a raging inferno. The flaming golemites were walking tanks, the fire wolves ripping the Grasslandian soldiers apart, and the flame people's desire to burn everything in their path. Despite the fire kingdom's might, they ended up being humiliated after Grasslandia scavenged a fire truck

and used them as weapons against the flame folks. The only reason Grasslandia hasn't pushed the kingdom beyond their border was because of Fire giants guarding the kingdom's border.

The war between Grasslandia and the Fire Kingdom was called The Grass Fire War.

Legions were sent to take the northern part of the Ice Kingdom. But three weeks later, they lost contact with the northern army. About a month later, they were discovered to be frozen solid mid-march. Grasslandia decided to keep an eye on the Ice Kingdom instead.

The war in the eastern woods however, was a disaster.

As the eastern legion marches through the woods, they are ambushed by an unknown enemy. It was eventually discovered the suspect of these attacks were forest nymphs. Troops were found either beheaded, skinned, and their chest rip opened and a missing heart. Grasslandian troops' rising death toll was concerning, meanwhile the forest nymphs only lost a small amount. Grasslandia decided to make and non-aggression

pact with the forest nymphs, and focused on the southeast instead. The Jungle Kingdom. The war in the woods called The Hellish Woodlands.

The war against the Jungle kingdom is a success; but a shameful display of Grasslandia.

Despite overall curbstomp of the war on the Jungle Kingdom, the amount of discipline, and honor of the legion is non-existent. Journalist and historians describe the war in the Jungle Kingdom as barbaric. The amount of looting, burning, and defilement of the Jungle folks got to bad, that the denizens of Grasslandia demanded to end the war the Jungle. Though the Grasslandia's Caesar, and the senate complied, the damage has already been done. The villages were razed to the ground, food becomes scarce, and the Jungle folks growing hatred to Grasslandia. This was known as the Jungle Massacre.

And in the year 997, the war finally ended. Grasslandia became a powerhouse of Ooo, and secured their borders. Despite the war ended, it still effects many kingdoms today.

Finn and Dante approached the Centurion and put their clenched fist to their chest, saluting their officer.

"At ease soldier, have you found the bandits' hideout?" Asked the centurion

"Yes sir, we found their camp southeast from here. About 10 miles away." Dante answered.

Finn recalls the mission before they were sent here. According to the mayor of Dethrone, a mass of bandits were found in the neutral zone between the border of Grasslandia and the woods of the forest nymphs. It is said that the bandits were former legions of Grasslandia who deserted after they found out they were

going to be executed for The Jungle Massacre. They turned to banditry to save their own skin.

"Good, go to your respected corps, and get ready to march," says the Centurion. "Oh, and by the way Perez, how is Matilda?" Asked the Centurion to Dante.

"She is doing well, thank you for asking sir." Dante replied

"Bah, cease the formality nephew," says the Centurion. "You can by my name Dereck." He added

"Sorry sir, Legions' policy." Said Dante

Dereck chuckled to Dante's discipline. "Just like your grandpappy eh? Very well then, go back to your corps' and get suited up." He said and then saluted.

Finn and Dante saluted back and went to their corps' camp.

"For a guy who fought the rattleballs and lived to tell the tale, he's pretty chill." Says finn.

"Heh, it'll take more than a walking gum basket to break him kid, remember that." Dante replied.

After the legion fixed their camp, they continued to march for hours without stopping. Finn is in his column, while Dante is leading the Corps. The only sound Finn hears is the legions marching through the woods, and the marching song of the legion.

(Author's note : I don't own the song, I only change it a little.)

"Hey!" Says one of the soldiers behind Finn's column.

"Sorry! Excuse me! Coming through!" Says a yellow dog with long stretchy legs catching up to Finn's column.

Finn saw it was Jake, who was wearing a standard issue body armor vest, and a kettle helmet. Jake is pretty much his best friend, a.k.a his brother. When Finn was twelve they would go and accept clearing dungeons and getting the loot, selling them to the employer and a whole lot of adventure.

Though there are times Finn gets in trouble with the employers because of his young age at that time.

Jake shranked as small as a baseball and landed on Finn's bearhat. His vest and helmet, which has shape-synchronized enchantment, also shranked along with him.

"Yo Finn! How's my lil' bro doing? Jake asked.

"Doing fine." Finn answered, with a hint of nervousness.

"You sure? I'm a dog, I know when you are not fine." Jake said.

"Okay, fine you got me." Finn admitted. "Ever since we signed up in the legion academy. All the time, it's just a drill, or military exercises for three years. But now? We are finally being sent to fight." Says Finn who is twiddling his thumbs between his hands nervously.

Finh remembered the great time he and Jake's Dungeon raid. But ever since the Dungeoneering Restriction law, finding Dungeon clearing employers are getting harder and harder to find. Clearing dungeon's was the only income that Finn and Jake have. Sure they could apply themselves as mercenaries, but the fact how many shady businesses the mercs are getting, it's a straight up no-no for the two.

"Nah, don't worry about it. Besides, what's the worst that could happen?" Says Jake with confidence.

"Ugh, great." Says one of the soldiers behind Finn.

"What did I say?" Jake asked.

"What do you mean? That's a straight up red flag you said there." Says the same soldier who groaned earlier.

Finn couldn't see his face, but he did recognize the voice. Jacob, he recalled.

"Dude, come on, the dudes we're facing are just bandits." Says Jake.

"Bandits who are former members of the VI Legion. These guys could be veterans during the Expansion War." Jacob replied.

"Well, when you said it like that yeah. But the only experience they have is burning down houses, and killing anything that couldn't fight back." Jake argued.

Just as Jacob is about to counter what Jake said, the dog lifts his paws, stopping Jacob from talking, and lifts his ears.

"The centurion says be quiet." Says Jake while mentally face palming, and expected to be chewed out by the centurion later on.

The march went on for an hour. Until the column stopped upon hearing something. It sounded like something was rolling. The sound is coming from both the left and right of the column.

The legion tensed up, Legionnaires formed a wall formation. Archers, and Auxiliaries prepared their arrows and javelins. And the longsword wielders unsheathe their swords, expecting a battle.

Seconds later, a ball of burning dirt with twigs and leaves are rolling towards the column. Jake's quick thinking makes himself bigger and formed a wall with small holes around the longswords' column. The other columns aren't so lucky. The balls of fire crashed into them, completely breaking their formation. Just as the column broke, arrows and sharp stone started flying towards the now broken formation. Though the soldier's helmet and vest saved them, it didn't stop the projectiles piercing through their exposed parts of their protection.

Finn could only see through the holes. It was chaos.

Legionnaires desperately raised their shields, though some were successful, this only resulted in them being hit from behind.

A green arrow makes its marked to one of them Legionnaires head and completely piercing through his helmet

"Enchanted arrows." Dante muttered. "Dog!? Can you see the centurion!?!" Dante asked.

"Damn it, it's too foggy. I can't see him!" Jake replied while saying 'ow' each time the arrows and stones hit him.

"Glob damn it all. Dog! open up the front of the column and follow me!" Dante ordered.

Jake immediately opened his front so the best of the corps could escape the onslaught. As the last of the corps left Jake's protection, Jake shifted back to his normal form and ran on all four to catch up with the rest.

It's been an hour since the ambush, the corps hid in the thick part of the woods to rest, and tend their wounded.

Finn was able to nab one of the supposedly enchanted arrows, but upon closer look... it's not enchanted, but made out of grass.

Someone touched Finn's shoulder causing him to panic and nearly grab his sword's hilt. Fortunately, it was only Jake.

"Okay. Jacob might've been right about that flag." Says Jake clearly exhausted from running "What you got?" He asked.

"One of the arrows the ambushers shot us with. Does this look like grass to you?" Finn answered, then asked.

Jake takes the arrow and sniffs at it. "Yep, it's made out of grass alright. Who would've thought grass would be this dangerous." Says Jake, confirming Finn's suspicion

"The arrow is grass?" Asked someone behind, the two turned around and saw Dante approaching them.

"Yes sir, a well made one as well." Says Fin letting his superior inspect it.

Dante inspected the grow, and gave it a quick small tap. A trickle of blood started purring out from his fingers. His expression showed signs of nervousness and his body stiffened.

"Forest Nymphs." Dante muttered.

Finn, Jake, and the nearby soldiers froze and looked at him. They couldn't tell how long the silence was, then Jacob, one of the soldiers under Dante's command spoke.

"Y-you're kidding, right?" Says Jacob, stuttering.

Dante we didn't say a word, confirming ambushers' identity.

"Oh, Glob help us." Says Jacob.

"We need to get out of here."

"How? They might have surrounded us

by now!"

"I-I don't know, fight?"

"Does it look like we're equipped to fight nymphs!?"

"Shut it, all of you!" Dante yelled. "Secure the perimeter, I'll call in a flare to get rescue forces for us." He ordered

The troops saluted, but before they could follow their orders, they heard a twig break.

The soldiers immediately unsheathe their sword and then took a defensive formation, Finn and Jake included. They can hear more sounds noise around them, quick footsteps, bush rustling, trees creaking, and more twigs breaking.

"...Nobody. Run. Dog, can you locate them?" Dante while caoustitusly watching his surrandings.

"I have a name thank you very much, but if it's forest nymphs we're dealing with, then I don't know-" Says Jake, but his words was cut off from the sudden uneasy silence.

Not a single of them more, nor breathe. If any of them listened carefully, they could hear each other's heartbeat.

Finn scans his surroundings to see if the nymphs would directly attack them. "Come on, where are you all?" Finn said in his mind. "Now that I thought about it, this reminds me off... "He added in his head.

...

...

...

Realization struck Finn hard, and slowly lifted his head to look up.

Dante, and the rest of the corps who saw Finn's sudden halt of movement and looked where Finn was looking. Dante was confused for a moment and decided to take out his flare to shoot it towards the sky (he also mentally cursed himself for not using the flare earlier).

As Dante shot the flare, all of the corps spotted the forest nymphs on the trees, drawing their weapons. The whole ordeal felt like the forest itself was baring its fangs towards them.

As the flare finally reached the sky, the nymphs jumped off the tree branches towards the corps.

Jake immediately throws his fist and multiplies them, hitting a number of nymphs. But despite this, the other nymphs reached their intended prey. The nymphs saber landed on the troops, slicing their limbs off, spear piercing through them, daggers and knives stabbed their shoulders, and hatchets chopping their skull.

Dante is quick enough to block a incominghatchet to his head, and Finn was lucky only receiving a drop kick on his face, disorienting

"Finn!" Yelled Jake. He made his paws bigger, and swat the nymphs like flies to get to Finn. But he was surrounded by dozens forest nymphs stopping him to help his brother. Jake could only pray glob existed that his bro is okay.

Finn managed to get back on his feet a bit dizzy. It took him a few seconds to clear his visions, and witnessed the battle that was unfolding. It was more chaotic than the ambush.

The other swordsmen managed to hold their grounds, but arrows and knives were sticking on their back and shoulders like pin cushions, if the nymphs wouldn't kill them, the blood loss would. One swordsman got ganged up by four nymphs, he fell to his knees and was repeatedly stabbed by the nymphs' daggers. One corps rookie tripped and fell on his back

"N-no, please!" He begged before a hatchet struck his head.

Finn couldn't move, when he first signed up in the Legion, he expected to travel around Ooo, fighting monsters that got near the settlement and saving lives. The last thing he thought was being helplessly slaughtered.

Finn could only watch the chaos, but since the nymphs are now near their temporary camp, he can see that all of them have green skin and eyes, have leaves for hair, and had horns individually different from each other. They are wearing brown cloaks, a colored green leather chestplate, boots, and scabbards for their sabres.

Finn only snapped out of his frozen state when a nymph landed in front of him. The nymph is wearing the same gear as her allies, but the only thing is different is her branch-like antlers. She summoned a spear, and pointed it at him.

Finn immediately put on his fighting stance and prepare to fight the nymph

The nymph charged at him, and thrust her spear. Finn parried the spears and swung his sword to slice her head off. She managed to lean backward avoiding the blade, and made a swift kick to Finn's stomach, sending him back a few inches away from her. As Finn staggered, she immediately threw her spear towards him. Finn managed to dodge the spear, only grazing his cheek.

She charged at him again, this time summoning a pair of hatchets. Upon seeing the nasty axes, Finn thrust his blade towards her to keep his distance far from the nymph. The two fighters circled each other, finding an opening. Finn cursed his luck after he stepped on a loose stone, nearly falling over. The nymph took the opportunity and ran towards him. Finn tried to swing his sword upward, but the nymph raised both her hatchets and chopped his sword's blade off its handle. After that, Finn received one roundhouse to his chest, causing him to fall on his back.

Finn could only look at his attacker as she pounced on him with the hatchets raised high. Time seemed to have slowed down to Finn, his vision went back to old childhood memories. He remembered the happiness used to have when his adoptive parents are still around. He remembers himself and Jake raiding dungeons and getting the boot.

"So this is how it feels like when life flashes before my eyes." Finn thought, prepared to meet his end.

And as cliche as it sounds, Dante holding his sword by the blade and swing its handle to the nymph sending her flying a few feets away

"Kid, get up!" Ordered Dante to Finn.

Finn, who is still shocked by the near death experience, gets up on his feet. He finally felt the round house kick's pain on his chest, but he ignored it.

"Keep fighting, reinforcements are in their way." Says Dante, keeping Finn's morale high as possible. He gave Finn one of the fallen soldiers' swords which Finn took without hesitation. The sword that Finn now holds is gilded, its handle is blacks and a ruby as its pommel.

Finn and Dante fought the nymphs back to back, this went on for several minutes, until a rumbling of an engine was heard from the distance. Finn, Jake, Dante, and the rest of the surviving corps sigh in relief.

Grasslandian cavalry has arrived.

Dozens of Grasslandian soldiers riding on motorcycles, some of them are armed with maces, broadwords, and the others has another rider on their back, armed with shotguns.

The arrival of reinforcements quickly turn the tide of the battle, though the cavalry managed to kill a few nymphs, most nymphs managed to get to the treetops to avoid the riders, while some managed to kill them by shooting an arrow, and throwing their knives, spears, and hatchets at them.

"Ugh, finally and here I thought I have to grow big just stomp on them." Say, Jake. "Wait, where- oh nevermind." Jake was about to ask where Finn is, but he eventually saw him with the others.

But in the corner of his eyes, he saw the same nymph who Finn fought threw a sack at Finn and the rest of the corps. Causing a green smoke to explode in the middle.

"Finn!" Jake ran to the smoke to save his brother but felt sleepy all of the sudden. He immediately fell to his stomach and fell asleep.

Finn and the rest of the corps staggered to their feet, trying to keep themselves awake. But one by one, they fell and fell into a deep sleep.

The only thing that Finn remembers is someone yanking him to the treetops, jumping to branch to branches

Author's Note

This is by far the longest chapter I have ever written. I got so carried away with the action, and tense atmosphere that I forgot this was supposed to be 10 pages in my notebook, instead I finished this...(counting the pages) 26 pages!

This isn't the first time writing an action sequence, but I have to admit, I never got too caught up in the moment. Thank you again for reading this fic.

Oh, and quick mention. The Longsword corps don't have helmet, just animal hats similar to Finn but different.
