Chapter 51

Lucas felt an intense wall of heat as Moltres flew closer. It was at that moment that he realised the Pokemon's sheer size. It looked to be about the size of a small house with its wings spread out. An overwhelming feeling of helplessness hit him as he realised that there was not an easy escape from this situation. If the Pokemon wanted to attack them, they would be helpless to resist.

The adults looked terrified as Moltres flew closer to the boat. There was no way their Pokemon could stand up against it, even if they combined all their strength. The three Gyarados turned as they sensed Moltres' approach and dived back into the water immediately. Even they understood that it would be folly to stand up against the Legendary Pokemon.

Moltres hovered in the sky above them, flapping its wings as it thought about what it was going to do. Judging by the flames gathering around its mouth, it was a hair trigger away from attacking. Lucas didn't need visual confirmation. His Sense Malevolence perk triggered, leaving no doubt as to its intentions.

The teens watched the scene anxiously from inside the boat cabin. Their Pokemon were huddled together, overwhelmed by Moltres' sheer power.

"What are we going to do?" Misty asked.

"I don't know," Faith said, looking at Lucas who had his head bowed. "The boat would not survive long against Moltres' bombardment. We could jump into the water, but there is no guarantee that it will leave us alone after that."

"I estimate the chances of us dying at ninety-nine point five per cent," Eve said bluntly. "If it attacks. There are so many unfinished research projects that I could be doing in my lab right now. However, someone insisted that I join this boring excursion and now I won't be able to finish them."

Lucas was frantically thinking of a way out of the current situation. If he did nothing, they could all die, with his parents being the first victims. He didn't know what set Moltres off, but it was irrelevant in the overall scheme of things. It's not like he can walk up to the Pokemon and ask about the reason for its aggression.

Lucas had one idea but didn't know if it was reliable or not. Since his Luck got him into this situation, he assumed it would get him out of it as well. Lucas opened his menu and stared at the Lucky Hour perk. There was a huge possibility that it wouldn't do anything, as the perk only improved the odds in your favour in situations that were still manageable. How could it compare against a Legendary Pokemon? No matter which way he looked at it, he could not imagine getting out of the situation with luck alone.

Suddenly, he got another idea. Closing his eyes, he tried to eliminate all distractions and entered a meditative state. Ignoring the voice of the four teenagers beside him, he accessed the void where he could see the bonds between his Pokemon and himself. However, he was interested in the bond he shared with the Legendary Pokemon, Mew.

Lucas grabbed onto the strand that connected him to Mew and reached out to him.

'Are you there Mew?'

Silence.

'Look, I need your help right now. For some reason, Moltres is attacking us, and I need something to match him in power.'

Lucas waited anxiously but didn't get a response. He knew Mew was there though, even if it wasn't speaking. Having made contact with Mew numerous times over the bond, he had developed a sense of knowing when the Pokemon was there.

'Look, I think I discovered your location. You are on Zealous Dragon Island, aren't you? I need your help or my family and friends may die. I will do anything in return for this favour.'

'Anything?'

Finally a response.'Yes, I swear. Now please hurry.'

Lucas opened his eyes and heard that someone was screaming. He scrambled to his feet and looked out the window. His eyes widened as he saw the conflagration of flames shooting from Moltres' mouth down onto the barge. He was about to succumb to despair, thinking his parents were dead when Moltres stopped its attack. This allowed him to see Mr Mime standing in front of the adults, holding a massive Barrier above them.

The Barrier shattered, and Mr Mime collapsed onto her back, clearly exhausted. Moltres didn't seem bothered that its attack had been stopped, as if it was just a preliminary before the main event.

"Bloody hell," Jason swore, his face pressed against the window. "Moltres is unstoppable."

"It's going to be okay," Lucas said. "Help is on the way."

"What are you talking about?" Faith asked, looking nervously outside.

"Stay here," Lucas commanded, exiting the cabin.

Lucas ran down the ramp and onto the barge. Looking up, he could see Moltres preparing another attack. After passing the adults, he raised his arms in the air, ignoring their startled exclamations.

"Hey, you great flaming chicken," Lucas shouted. "Why don't you pick on someone your own size?"

"Lucas, get away from there." David stepped toward his son, about to pull him back. Poliwrath, Dad's Pokemon, stepped forward, looking like he nominated himself as the next line of defence.

"It's okay," Lucas glanced over his shoulder. "Help is coming."

"What?" Sophia yelled before her eyes were drawn upwards, as something caught her attention.

Lucas turned around and sighed in relief when he saw Mew's figure floating in the sky between Moltres and them. He appeared instantly as if he had teleported here, which he probably did. With its power, it could probably travel hundreds of kilometres in one go if it wanted to. It was then that he realised how futile it would have been to search for Mew if it didn't want to be found.

Mew was small, about the same size as Dante, so it was difficult to imagine the Pokemon standing up against the massive Moltres. The Pokemon looked like its anime counterpart. It was a pink bipedal Pokemon with large blue eyes and a rounded, wide snout. Mew's body was compact and had short stubby arms ending in large hind paws with three fingers on each one. It had a tail sticking out of the back, long and thin, with a rounded tip at the end.

Moltres let out a screech and opened its mouth and fired a huge stream of fire at the small Pokemon. Mew opened its own mouth and released a beam of psychic energy, and the two attacks met in mid-air. There was a huge explosion and everyone was blown off their feet by the shockwave that followed. The cabin windows were blown out, causing the teenagers inside to scream as they were showered with broken glass.

The Pokemon managed to stay on their feet, although they were pushed slightly backward. They did the smart thing and picked up the humans and retreated to the cabin on the boat, just as another explosion sounded as the Legendary Pokemon clashed. The Pokemon placed them on the floor and stood outside, blocking the cabin door protectively. The cabin space was now cramped since both humans and the younger Pokemon shared it.

"Maggie, start the boat and get us out of here," Lucas urged the shell-shocked woman. Maggie looked at him for a moment before nodding and getting to her feet. She turned the key and the engine roared to life.

"Won't they come after us?" Sophie asked.

"Mew is friendly," Lucas said, watching the titanic battle outside. "As long as it holds its own against Moltres, we will be fine."

"Why is Mew helping us?" Eve asked, puzzled. "It's completely illogical."

"That is what I would like to know," David stared at Lucas, who shrugged and didn't say anything.

"Should I ditch the barge?" Maggie asked. "It will give us some more speed."

"It won't make a difference," Lucas shook his head. "So don't worry about it."

As the boat retreated, Lucas watched the fight unfold. It didn't seem like the two Pokemon would be surrendering anytime soon.

Suddenly, Moltres screeched as its body lit up with flames before releasing it in a massive wave that spread in all directions, igniting the sky on fire. Mew teleported backwards, which gave it time to raise its arms, and the fire split around the Pokemon like it was parting the sea.

"Get down," Lucas screamed, and they ducked as the wall of heat rushed past the boat. Lucas could have sworn his head was on fire because it was so hot.

After it had passed, Lucas raised his head again to witness a breathtaking sight. A huge chunk of rock floated in the air right in front of Mew, who had its arms raised. The rock was summoned with Ancient Power, and its size was comparable to a skyscraper. As if it were nothing, Mew tossed the whole thing at Moltres with a flick of its hands. The rock exploded as it was about to hit the Pokemon, shattering with a boom, sending thousands of rocks everywhere.

The Moltres used Agility and flew forward at tremendous speed to avoid the debris. It was at this point that Mew appeared in front of it, and fired another beam of psychic energy point-blank into Moltres' face, sending it spinning to the water below.

Moltres flared its wings before hitting the water and recovered quickly, hovering above the surface of the water. The Pokemon let out a cry of rage, and it suddenly glowed with intense red energy. There was a blast of fire and flying-type energy that formed into enormous swirling whirlpools around the Pokemon. As they spread into the skies, they formed giant fire tornadoes, towering pillars of flaming destruction. Dark clouds started gathering above, as the tornadoes were so powerful that they seemingly created their own weather system.

"Damn," Faith cursed, echoing everyone's sentiments.

"This is not a battle," Jason said, his camera on his shoulder, appearing from somewhere. "This is more like a pissing contest. Look at me, I can create these massive destructive fire tornadoes."

"Imagine if they hit a town or city," Lucas muttered.

What happened next was even more incredible. Mew raised its arms again, but this time a wall of water rose with it. Eventually, the wall reached the same height as the tornadoes in terms of size and scope. They watched incredulously as the massive wall of water hung suspended, ready to crash down onto the tornadoes. Lucas recalled a scene from the animated series The Last Airbender. In this scene, Aang in his avatar state summoned a wall of water to stop the invading fire army. The scale was similar, if not bigger.

"Maggie, can the boat go faster?" Lucas asked nervously.

"Hell, no," Maggie cursed. "Get the Pokemon up front that can cast Barrier to stem the brunt of it, or else we will be swallowed by the wave that ensues. Are you sure Mew is helping us?"

"Yes, I'm pretty sure," Lucas laughed awkwardly.

The wall crashed down over the fire tornadoes, instantly drowning them in tonnes of water and extinguishing them in an instant. The sea rose rapidly as the water that had been displaced returned with a vengeance, and a huge swelling wave moved outwards from the impact zone. In spite of the help they received from their Pokemon, it seemed futile to stop it as it approached them. It is likely that the thing would flip the boat very easily.

A moment before the boat was hit, it was jerked upwards by an unseen force. Everyone stumbled from the unexpected jolt, before recovering to watch as the waves passed underneath them safely. The entire scene since Moltres first arrived was one incredible moment after another, something they would never forget for the rest of their lives.

As the sea settled down, the boat descended back and landed with a huge crash. Lucas emerged from the cabin and looked in the direction of where the Pokemon had been fighting. Moltres had disappeared, and he couldn't see Mew either. Has the fight finished already?

'Moltres and I have settled our differences for now. It will not bother you.'

Lucas looked everywhere, but the Pokemon was nowhere to be seen. 'Why did it attack in the first place?'

'That is because it sensed your aura, which is tainted with my own. To avoid conflict, we decided on our own territories, and we could not travel through each other without permission. It mistakenly thought that I was on the boat and had broken the agreement.'

'So it's your fault that we were attacked, and yet you still demanded a favour from me.'

'I did not force you to come here.'

'Semantics.'

'Are you reneging on our deal?'

'No, I made a promise. What do you want?'

'It's very simple. Let's see how your family and friends respond when you reveal your other form. Will they still remain faithful? Or will they act like most humans and turn away from you?'

'That's a low blow. Am I some social experiment for you? Trying to prove that all humans are bad?'

Mew didn't respond.

A hand clamped on his shoulder and Lucas turned around and stared into his parents' suspicious eyes. "Hi, what's up?" Lucas asked brightly.

"You want to tell us what's going on?" David asked tightly. "You summoned Mew here as if it was your own personal Pokemon. How did you do it?"

Lucas winced. He gave away the fact that he knew Mew when he tried to reassure them everything was going to be okay. Behind his parents, Faith, Jason and Misty peered out of the cabin, listening in to the conversation. Faith's brows were scrunched and her mouth was downturned, indicating she was unhappy. He would have to eat crow later to get back on her good side.

How was he supposed to tell his parents that he was slowly morphing into a Pokemon? What about his friends? Could he trust them to keep his secret? How would they react to this? What would Faith's reaction to this be? What would she think of it? If she broke up with him because of it, he would not be able to bear it.

"Whatever it is," Sophia reached out and hugged him. "It will not change how we feel about you. If you didn't summon Mew, we would have been dead."

"Damn straight," David said. "We have already been through so much together and you are my son. Just tell us what's going on."

His friends echoed the sentiment, and Eve nodded as well. Lucas sighed and looked at Maggie who was driving the boat.

"Don't worry about me," Maggie said. "I don't want more drama in my life. Go discuss it on the barge."

'Don't forget about us either.' Dante said as the Pokemon exited the cabin.

'Damn straight.' Imara snorted.

'Even if it turned out you were secretly a girl, I wouldn't mind.' Max nodded his head.

'Dufus, we have seen him naked before. How can he be a girl?' Duke said.

Freya didn't say anything but followed her team members onto the barge.

They walked down the ramp. The whole thing was a mess, and the table and chairs had been swept away, so they sat down on the deck.

"Does this have anything to do with the experiments Team Rocket performed on you?" David asked.

"What is he talking about, Lucas?" Faith asked, grabbing his hand.

Lucas sighed and proceeded to tell them his history with Team Rocket for Faith's and Misty's sake. His parents and Jason had heard most of the story before.

"Why didn't you say anything?" Faith sniffed, looking like she was going to cry.

Lucas raised her hand and kissed it. "I didn't want you to think differently about me."

"You're an idiot," Faith declared, turning her head away from him.

"I agree," Misty said with a firm nod. "If you think it would change what we think about you, then you are wrong."

"There's more," Lucas said, taking a deep breath. He held out his arm and watched as it slowly transformed into Mewtwo's arm. Everyone cried out in alarm and looked at him in confusion.

A number of hurried questions were asked by the group, but they were tangled up so badly that Lucas was not able to provide any meaningful answers. Instead of waiting for him to speak, everyone gathered around and poked his arm in curiosity. Thankfully, none of their initial reactions was negative, which was a relief. Lucas stared at Faith, who ran her hand down his arm in fascination. Upon meeting his gaze, her eyes conveyed so much information in a quick glance; everything was fine, and nothing would change between them due to this situation.

"How long have you been able to do that?" David asked with his brows furrowed in concern.

"Not long after I returned from the hospital," Lucas said. "It seems that because I have Mew's DNA in me, I am slowly turning into some sort of Pokemon-human hybrid."

"But you can change back right?" Sophia asked, her eyes looking at him fearfully.

"Yes," Lucas nodded, focusing on his arm and changing it back. "But the transformation will continue until I have complete control over it, or it controls me."

"Fascinating," Eve stared at him with gleaming eyes. "I would love to examine you in further detail. Why don't you visit me in the lab later?"

"You sound like your former teacher," Lucas pointed out, which instantly silenced the girl.

"Why did you hide this from us?" David asked. "You knew about this when we were reunited on top of the volcano. You lied to us."

"What was I supposed to say?" Lucas retorted. "You had just got your son back. How was I supposed to break the news that I may not be the same person in the future?"

Jason leaned forward eagerly. "Oh man, this is so cool. Hey, if you completely change into a Pokemon, do you think I can capture you and use you as part of the team?"

"Jason!" Everyone shouted, and Misty elbowed him hard in the side.

"If that ever happens," Lucas laughed. "I may consider it. Maybe I will just beat the shit out of you."

"Do you share some sort of connection with Mew? Can you summon it whenever you want?" Misty asked.

"Yes and no," Lucas said. "We share a slight bond similar to the one we have with our Pokemon, although it's weaker. And the little bugger didn't do it out of the kindness of his heart. He wanted something in return."

"What was the price?" Sophia asked.

"He just wanted me to tell you about the transformation," Lucas said.

"So you wouldn't have told us if you hadn't been forced to?" Faith asked sweetly.

He waved his hands frantically in an attempt to prevent the imminent eruption. "I would have told you at some point."

"Right," Faith gave him a disbelieving look.

"Maybe Mew wants to create an egg between the two of them when he turns into a Pokemon?" Jason sniggered, and Lucas wanted to smack the little prick.

"What will you do about your issue?" Sophia asked delicately.

"That's what I hope Mew will help me with," Lucas said. "If I can't stop the transformation, I can learn to control it at least."

They continued to discuss the topic as the boat returned to the island. It actually felt good to get the situation about his transformation off his chest. Maybe Mew was trying to prove that humans were fickle and couldn't be trusted, but it was wrong in this instance. No matter what happened in the future, they would stick with him.

Later that evening, Lucas stepped out of the mansion as Mew contacted him over the bond, wishing to see him. After their return to the island, they had to explain what had happened to the remaining adults who had noticed the huge commotion from where they were located in town. All Lucas said, however, was that two legendary Pokemon had a spat on the sea, and they were almost caught up in the upheaval as a result. It sounded so incredible that it distracted them from asking deeper questions.

Sara and Mike had been busy, and their investigation into the town proved fruitful. His ambitious plans for its reconstruction seemed more likely to be realised. They have decided that tomorrow they will begin inspecting the resort site, and Lucas has also informed them that he would like to start on the Pokemon Reserve as well, so they are staying for another week to make sure everything was planned out accordingly. Mike and his construction company were now officially hired, so Maggie would start ferrying the crew to the island. Lucas just needed to hear back from grandpa so he knew he had the funds to proceed with the project.

Lucas had received an update on his quest involving Mew, and so he was one step closer to completing it. Hopefully, it would be the final quest in the chain, and he no longer had to worry about it afterwards.

He stopped at the edge of town, Mew appeared, coming to settle on the ground before him.

'Why did you want to see me?' Lucas asked.

'You want to solve your problem, yes?'

'Of course. Do you have a solution?'

'No. Unfortunately, your DNA has already mutated far enough that the transformation is irreversible. What I find strange is that you can shift back into a human. It shouldn't be possible at all.'

'So what? I will be stuck with Mewtwo for the rest of my life?'

'Why do you call the Pokemon form Mewtwo?'

'Er, it's just something I came up with.' Lucas laughed sheepishly. 'Think about it. It's like an alternate version of yourself or an evolution. Don't you think it deserves its own name?'

'Whatever. Regarding your form, I can help you control it, but it will not be easy. I want you to come to my island so we can work on it without distractions.'

'How long will this take?'

'That depends on the effort you put into it.'

'Wait here. I need to tell others where I am heading and prepare some supplies.'

'We are currently being watched.' Mew looked towards the town entrance.

Lucas whirled around and saw a Crobat perched on the gate, observing them. Lucas sighed and called out to Alfred, who stepped out from behind the gate with an apologetic expression.

"Forgive me, sir," Alfred said. "I was concerned about where you were heading at this time of night. I didn't mean to spy on you."

"You didn't believe the story I gave you before did you?" Lucas sighed.

"I didn't think you told the entire story," Alfred acknowledged.

Lucas turned around to see that Mew had disappeared. "Well, I will tell you as we head back to the mansion. But you must swear not to tell anyone."

"That goes without saying," Alfred said. "I saw that you looked like you were communicating with Mew. How is that possible?"

Lucas explained the whole situation as they walked slowly back to the mansion. In the future, he will have to be more careful, or soon the secret will be revealed to everyone. If Giovanni knew, he might try and recapture him. Then again, if he could master Mewtwo's form, he would like to see the bastard try.

{0(((..)))0}

Lucas whooped as he soared through the sky, flying extremely fast as Mew propelled him towards Zealous Dragon Island. For the first time ever, he had the opportunity to experience the incredible feeling of flying. If he could do this in his Mewtwo form, maybe it would be a bit easier for him to accept the fact that he would be a Pokemon in the future.

Convincing his parents and Faith to stay behind when he told them he would be away for a while was not easy. Doubly so for his Pokemon. However, he promised to contact them often if he was away for longer than a few days. Hopefully, it wouldn't take too long so he could return to his Pokemon journey.

A small island appeared ahead and rapidly grew in size as they approached. It was about one-third as large as Cinnabar Island and surrounded by sheer cliffs on all sides, but there was a small cove on the western side of the island that allowed boats to drop anchor and gain access. However, they would have to climb the cliff to reach the top half of the island, and they would have to keep a watch out for the inhabitants.

Mew guided him to the highest point on the island, a large cliff with a gigantic tree perched near the top. Lucas heard a roar and looked around quickly to see they were being chased by a huge three-headed Pokemon with six black wings. A Hydreigon. With a casual flick of its wrist, Mew shooed the Pokemon away. In response, it banked right and drifted down to another part of the island. Lucas envied Mew's ability to order around such a powerful Pokemon. What a boss!

Lucas touched down on the ground next to the tree and took a few steps to regain his stability on the ground. It still felt like he was flying, and it took him a few moments to get over the strange feeling. Mew dropped down beside him and flew towards the tree.

'Follow me.'

Mew led him around the tree, on a narrow path with a sheer drop cliff-face next to it. Based on what he could see from where he was standing, the cliff must have been at least seventy metres high. A small, narrow opening could be seen on the rock face leading into a small cave. Lucas had to crouch down to follow Mew inside.

'This is where you will stay while we work on your problem. The Pokemon on this island should stay away from this place, so don't wander too far or you may be attacked.'

'You said this was your island. Doesn't it belong to the other Pokemon? It is named after them after all.'

'That is the name you humans gave the island. It already belonged to me when the Pokemon arrived. I allowed them to live here.'

Taking a seat on the ground, Lucas took a look around him. There was nothing in the cave, but the walls were dead straight as if shaped by hand and not from a natural formation. On one of the walls, there was a crude image of what looked like Pokemon. He looked closer and realised that they were all Legendary Pokemon, including Arceus itself.

'Why have you got a drawing of all the Legendaries?' Lucas asked.

'Is that what they are?' Mew drifted over and stared at the wall. 'These images are something I dream about often. Until I met Moltres, I wasn't sure if they were even real.'

'You mean you don't remember? Not even Arceus?'

'Who is Arceus?'

'Arceus is the God Pokemon.' Lucas pointed to the large image Mew had drawn in the centre. 'This is the original Pokemon, which spawned all the Pokemon we know today, including yourself.'

'Is that so? Why don't I recall Arceus? Or the other Pokemon in this image?'

Lucas considered the matter. As long as some parts were carefully edited out, he could tell him about the meeting with Arceus. But did he want to give away the information without receiving any compensation for it? Mew tricked him into telling his family and friends about Mewtwo. Perhaps he should teach him a lesson as well. On the other hand, Mew was helping him with his problem, so maybe that was what balanced things out in the end.

Deciding to be the bigger man, Lucas told about his meeting with Arceus and the cataclysm that occurred in the distant past, which was probably responsible for Mew losing its memories.

'That explains a lot.' Mew drifted away, deep in thought.

Lucas sighed and looked around at the empty cave. Since Mew may be preoccupied with his thoughts for a while, he may as well set up his bed.

Lucas took off his backpack and removed his sleeping bag and pillow, and laid them out against the wall. His supplies were limited since he couldn't access his inventory. Recently, he thought of learning the Aura skill that allowed him to create a pocket dimension for situations like this where he needed extra space. It was one way of circumventing the restriction.

'Are you ready to start? Mew appeared in front of him.

'What am I supposed to do?'

'Up to this point, your transformation has happened at a snail's pace. It is like something else is affecting its progression.'

The system was responsible for that. If it wasn't for it, he may have already turned into an out-of-control Mewtwo.

'You are going to slowly work on transforming the other individual parts, but in a controlled manner. Then we will work on the complete transformation. I suspect that by doing this, you may suffer some loss of control at first. But if we do it right, we will eliminate most of the danger.

'Why are we forcing the entire change now? Wouldn't it be better for me to slowly transform as I have been doing?'

'Because even with that, there is a risk of going out of control. Better to do it in a controlled environment where I am here to stop you if you get out of hand.'

Right. That didn't sound scary at all.

'Let's get this over with.'

So what do you think? Can Lucas gain control of his complete Mewtwo form?

Thanks for reading.
