A Heart Torn
A Charah Tale By Lord Rapier
Chapter 40: It's Casey Time
Bob Hope Airport, Burbank Ca
The CI company jet is close to capacity. Chuck stands in front of the cockpit door.
"Hello folks. Thank you all for coming and being part of John's and our special day. I know we'll be getting a little crowded. We'll be making a stop in Chicago, where Ellie, Devon, Clara, and April will be joining us, and of course Beauty the magic unicorn. "
Molly yells, "YAY!" and claps loudly.
Chuck winks, smiles, and gives Molly a thumbs up. "We'll make sure you get a chance to stretch your legs and share some hugs. Your pilots for the first leg will be HM Murdock our company pilot. The co-pilots will be Morgan Jr and Little John." The kids clap their hands and yell "YAY."
For the second leg leaving Chicago, my beautiful Sarah will be our pilot. Nothing to worry about, she's been flying me to the moon and back for years. Her co-pilots will be Molly and Clara." Clara claps, Molly puts her hand to her throat and smiles demurely. Chuck catches the move and smiles. Yep, that's Sarah's daughter… our daughter.
Sarah yells out. "Ladies rule." Molly, Clara, Emma, Gretchen, Mrs. Sawyer, and Alex clap. The twins join in on the clapping, to the delight of all the passengers.
Chuck continues. "Of course, booster seats will be provided by parent's or grandparent's laps. We want to be sure that the wrong buttons aren't pushed.
Once we arrive in DC, we'll depart the plane and hop on a bus that will transport us all to the White House." There's a huge cheer from everyone. "I apologize in advance for the inconvenience. Since we'll all be spending the night in The aforementioned White House…" Another cheer goes up. Chuck laughs "… security will be understandably tight.
You've all been cleared; however, you and all of your baggage and belongings will be searched. If you have any weapons, or anything at all, that could be used to threaten the First Family, please leave them on the plane.
While we're guests of the First Family, Sarah and I will be staying in the Lincoln bedroom." Sarah claps and cheers, the rest of the folks turn and laugh. Sarah shrugs and looks embarrassed. Chuck continues, "If you should need us for any reason… too damn bad, stay the hell away from us. If the Lincoln Bedroom is a rockin' don't come a knockin'." Everyone laughs as Sarah's face turns a deep shade of red.
"Tomorrow morning we'll be celebrating John's accomplishments in The Rose Garden. After the ceremony you'll go into the State Dining Room for appetizers and drinks. That will give the wedding party time to get ready. After you get a bite to eat and have a chance to congratulate our hero…" Casey grunts… "you'll head into the White House Chapel to witness my permanent joining to the old ball and chain."
Sarah laughs out loud as the others give him a dirty look. She smiles as she explains. "Relax folks, he's joking. It's an inside joke, with an explosive ending." Chuck and Casey join her in laughter.
Chuck calms down. "After the President marries us, my lady and I will take some time alone to celebrate our special moment. There'll be drinks and dancing. Then we'll rejoin you for dinner, and lots more music and dancing.
Sarah and I will be departing for our honeymoon at some point after the reception. So, in the event, we vanish and don't get to say thank you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking this journey with us. Right from the start it was your support and love that got us here."
Sarah claps, "Thank you all so much. We love each and every one of you."
Chuck continues, "That's all of you… except Casey, him we just tolerate." Casey grunts and everyone laughs. "After the ceremony you'll get to spend another night in The White house. In the morning the bus will take you back to the airport and you'll fly back to Burbank. No Stop in Chicago this time. Ellie and her family will be staying in Burbank for a few weeks. I know that's upsetting for you Molly, you'll have to spend time with your cousin Clara." Molly screams, "YAY!" The aircraft is filled with laughter. "I'm counting on all of you to look after them for me.
They'll be house hunting and working on setting up our new Family Clinic at CI and our The New Stephen J. Bartowski's Brain Research Exploration and Cognitive Health Foundation. In short, Bartowski's BREACH foundation. That information is not to be discussed, until we have something more concrete. We're about to be rolled out to the runway. Enjoy your flight. Please fasten your seat belts. Once we get in the air, help yourselves to the snacks and drinks at the back of the cabin. Please put your seatbelts on whenever you're in your seats. Okay, Who's our first copilot?"
Morgan looks at Alex, "Hon you go ahead I'll watch LJ."
"Thank you, Babe, but it looks to me like MJ would rather play with Molly, and I wouldn't mind chatting with Sarah, and the other ladies. Go have fun. LJ will only sit still for a short while; we can switch when he gets fidgety."
Once the plane is at cruising altitude Alex Moves to the back of the cabin, grabs an orange juice, and joins the ladies on the couches. Molly and MJ are playing on the floor between them. "Tell me Gretchen, are you enjoying having your own place?"
Gretchen nods and sips on her coffee, "I kinda like it. I mean it's only been a couple of weeks, so I'm still getting used to the quiet. I've never had a home before. I've been on the move my whole life. Sarah you and Chuck made things a lot easier for me. Buying that house as an investment and renting it back to me is awesome. The fact that I'm right down the block from your house is… comfortable. I like knowing you're there."
Sarah smiles, "I get what you mean. Having a home… roots takes some getting used to. We like having you close by; we're counting on the free babysitting."
Alex laughs, "Hey anytime the quiet gets too much you can borrow the twins for a couple of months."
Gretchen laughs. "I would love to have them. I made sure to childproof the whole downstairs. I look forward to my life as Aunt Gretchen."
"Sarah how're you doing? Are you nervous about the wedding?"
"Mom, Chuck, and I have been married for a while, nothing to be nervous about. It's not like I don't know what I'm getting into. Truth is I'm excited to start our family. We're fairly settled into the new house. We're surrounded by people we love. Our business is growing. Soon we'll have our own in-house family clinic and Chuck will get to have Ellie, Devon, and Clara close by. I have you and Molly back. Life is good."
Alex leans forward, "I tried to get info from Morgan about where you're going on your honeymoon. He won't tell me a thing. He keeps telling me that Chuck isn't talking."
Sarah laughs. "Chuck can't talk, he doesn't know where we're going. I'm the only one who knows. It's the only way I can make sure I have him all to myself. We'll be gone for two weeks. You and Morgan proved you can keep the company afloat, and this time you'll have your Dad and Maggie helping. That gives Chuck the freedom to disappear for a short time.
As to what we'll be up to, everything I need will fit in one suitcase. I'm not planning on wearing much in the way of clothes, and the only electronics will be my cell phone. Of course, I'm sure if he wants to, Chuck will hack it to take over the world. The ladies all laugh, except Emma.
Emma shakes her head, "Sweetheart, I'm not sure I like that. It feels all too familiar to me."
Sarah reaches over and takes her hand. "I get it Mom. How about I check in with you every few days and you let everyone else know we're okay? You still won't know where we are. In an emergency, you contact the team not us, agreed."
Emma smiles, "Agreed. Thank you, Sarah, I appreciate that.
Mrs. Sawyer pats Emma's hand. "Emma, you make sure I'm your first call in all situations. I'll take good care of you."
Emma smiles, "Thanks Bea, I know you take good care of my Sarah and Chuck."
"Mom, I'm not doing this to be mean. Chuck won't relax if he thinks he's needed. That means he can't know if he's needed. To be honest, I haven't had him all to myself for a long stretch, ever. This time I've decided to be selfish. He's going to be all mine for two weeks, all mine. I'd appreciate if you would all check in on the Woodcombs while they're staying at CI." Alex, Gretchen, and Mrs. Sawyer nod.
"Considering that Molly and Clara already have sleepover plans, I'm thinking we'll be spending lots of time together. It's a good thing we have unlimited long distance, or I'd be poor. The two of them are on the phone nonstop. I also made sure they know they'll be eating with us often."
Alex adds, "I hear you Emma, the twins want the girls to sleepover too. We figure it will give Ellie and Devon some time alone and maybe let them get some work done too."
"Thanks Mom, Alex, you're great. Chuck feels like he's abandoning them. That should make him feel better."
Gretchen acts shy, "Um can Aunt Gretchen sleepover too?"
Alex laughs, "Of course, we would love to have you."
"Sarah please tell me you're going someplace safe. I love Chuck, He's a sweetheart. But he's a computer tech and a businessman. I would hate to think what would happen if you got into a rough situation." Alex and Gretchen look at each other and fight hard to keep from laughing.
Sarah looks at them and scowls. "We'll be fine Mom. Chuck is very good at avoiding trouble. Not to mention, I'm not exactly the helpless female."
Suddenly the Cockpit door opens, and Morgan runs past them to the back of the plane holding LJ. "Coming through, make way." He runs into the restroom and closes the door. Everyone is watching when He comes out bouncing LJ. "Guess who just made a big boy potty?" Everyone cheers as LJ beams.
MJ seems especially happy, "LJ is a big boy."
Molly hugs him, "Both of my cousins are big boys." MJ smiles wide and hugs her back.
Alex looks at Molly, "You're a good big cousin. MJ It's your turn to fly the plane."
MJ releases Molly and puts on a look of dejection, "Don't want to, want to play with Molly."
Alex unbuckles and gets down on the floor. She hugs MJ. "Are you sure sweetheart? You may not get another chance to fly an airplane."
Sarah taps her on the shoulder, "He'll have a chance on the way back."
Alex nods, "Thanks Sis. MJ you can stay and play with Molly. Mommy is going to go fly the airplane. You be a good boy and listen to Auntie Sarah and Aunt Gretchen. Guys, do you mind?" Sarah, makes a are you kidding face and shakes her head. Gretchen gets on the floor to join the kids.
MJ hugs her, "Okay Mommy, I'll be good. Can LJ play with us too?"
"Of course, Sweetheart, I'll see you in a little while." She kisses Molly on the cheek. "Thank you, Molly, the boys love you."
Molly smiles, "I love them too." She hugs Alex. "I love you too." Alex hugs her tight.
Morgan puts LJ down. Alex gets up and heads forward, "Morgan, you now have about an hour or so to yourself. I suggest you take advantage of it."
Morgan's eyes go wide, "Nap time, bye." Alex laughs as he hurries off to strap himself into his seat."
"Later folks, I'm gonna go fly this baby." She heads towards the cockpit.
Gretchen calls after her, "Watch yourself Alex, HM is very weird." Alex waves over her shoulder as she moves forward in the cabin.
Sarah puts her arm around her mom's shoulders. "Well, Mom I guess we have four kids to look after."
Gretchen looks up at her, "HEY!" She smiles and shrugs, "Okay, I guess that's fair." She turns back to play with the kids. Sarah and Emma laugh.
Emma looks at Molly and smiles wide. She speaks quietly to Sarah. "Sweetheart, for the longest time it was just the two of us. Molly is loving her new family. You know what, so am I. You have the loveliest people in your life."
"I'm sorry it took so long Mom. I can't tell you how much I missed you and Molly. If it weren't for Chuck, we still may not be together. This is his family. He's given me the most wonderful gifts possible. All he is asks in return is that he be allowed to love me."
As the tears begin to drop from Sarah's eyes she leans on her mother's shoulder. "Mom, I'm so lucky, so blessed. I could never have dreamed this life."
Emma holds her daughter close. "Baby Girl, I wouldn't dream any less for you. I'm still sad for all the years I left you with my mother and your father. You deserve every bit of happiness you have. Okay, enough. You're about to marry a wonderful man and start a family of your own. The two of you get to learn from all the mistakes your parents made. Your children will never feel unloved or abandoned."
Sarah hugs her mother and coos. "I love you Mommy."
Midway International Airport, Chicago, IL
The rest of the flight to Chicago is filled with joking and laughter. When Alex returns to buckle herself and the kids in, she's elated. "That was so awesome. HM let me fly the plane. I got to make a turn and go down and up. THAT WAS AWESOME!"
Sarah laughs at Alex's excitement "Yes Alex, we all made those moves with you, very smooth." Chuck stands up to address the passengers. "Okay folks buckle in and get ready to land in Chicago. We'll be here for a short time to refuel and give you a chance to stretch your legs. We'll also be eating lunch provided by our favorite Polish restaurant. I got a phone call to tell me that we'll be greeted by Clara and Beauty the magic unicorn."
The kids explode in screams, "YAY!"
The adults laugh. Chuck continues, "I've also been informed that the First Lady has arranged for a tea party for the under ten crowd…" the kids scream even louder…"and libations and a light dinner for us old folk. Let's make sure that everyone is buckled in safely. Please stay in your seats until HM lets us know it's okay to move around."
The plane touches down and is taxied near the hangar. HM announces. "You can unbuckle and move around folks. I'll be back to open the hatch momentarily."
Molly is waiting by the door bouncing from foot to foot as HM walks up the aisle. "HM, please hurry up, open the door, I need to hug my cousin."
HM smiles, "On my way kiddo." He unlocks the door and lowers the stairs. A loud scream is heard as Clara and Molly lay eyes on each other for the first time. HM walks down the short stairway and offers his hand to Molly. She rushes down the stairs to hug Clara. They bounce up and down screaming to the delight of Ellie, Devon, Momma, and Jeffrey. April smiles as she keep her eyes on the surrounding area.
Sarah is the next one to climb down. She runs over to hug Ellie. "Hi Sis. It's good to see you again." Ellie hugs her back and kisses her.
Chuck is next, he hugs Devon while waiting his turn with Ellie. He's followed by the rest of the group. MJ and LJ are yelling, "Cousin Clara, Yay." The girls bring the twins into their hug. Beauty is held in place by the tight hugs as the kids all squeeze and kiss each other.
As the adults continue to reconnect Clara grabs Molly's hand. "Come on guys you need to meet my special friends. This is April, she's my nanny and good friend. April these are my cousins Molly, MJ, and LJ."
April squats to be on eye level with the kids. Somewhat relaxed knowing that there are others to assist in keeping her charge safe. "Hi, kids it's very nice to meet you. I look forward to getting to know you better in Washington." She stands up and steps back, Her back to the aircraft, her eyes always moving.
Clara pulls her group over to Momma Kozlowski, "This is Bubbie. She's one of my grandmas. She's teaching me and Mommy to cook, Polish and Jewish foods. I helped her make the food we brought." She points to picnic tables covered with food. "See, Bubbie this is Molly and MJ and LJ, my cousins from California."
Momma bends and strokes the children's cheeks. "Oy, such beautiful children, and look at this one a blonde beauty like Sarah. You'll all call me Bubbie."
Molly blushes. "Hello Bubbie, it's nice to meet you."
Clara gets excited, "This is my friend Jeffrey, Bubbie is his mommy. He likes unicorns too."
Jeffrey bows from the waist, "It's an honor to meet you Sirs, and Lady. If ever I can be of service, please don't hesitate to let me know. It would be my honor to serve you."
Molly whispers to Clara, "He talks like a storybook. What's a Bubbie?"
Clara giggles, "I know, he's Sir Jeffrey. He works for Uncle Chuck. When they're together it's lots of fun. It means grandma."
As is on cue, Chuck approaches. "Ah Sir Jeffrey, you are a sight for mine sore eyes. How goes the day to day in the Magic Forest?"
Jeffrey smiles and Bows, "All is well Sir Boss. Mine support chariots are well driven. I am content and grateful. I look forward to mine future journey to the land of Burbank where I may learn at the feet of the Masters."
"You are well come, my good friend. My heart is filled with warmth at your jubilation.
Molly and Clara look at each other and giggle. Clara runs up and hugs his legs, "Uncle Chuck You and Jeffrey are silly. I missed you so much."
Chuck picks her up, hugs her and kisses her. "Not as much as I missed you, Clara Doll. I see you finally got to hug your new cousin."
"Uh Huh, I like her, so does Beauty."
Chuck smiles and lifts Clara into the air. "Yay, I guess that means we can keep her."
Clara giggles, "Of course we're going to keep her Uncle Chuck, we love her."
Chuck scoops up Molly, "Yes, we do. We do love her." Molly wraps her arms around Chuck's neck.
The boys run up and grab Chuck's legs, MJ declares, "Unca Chuck we love her too."
Chuck is rocked back and has to catch his balance. "YAY! I'm so happy, all my favorite kids love each other."
Momma yells out, "Come, come eat while it's hot."
The group moves over to take seats at the tables and start to fill their plates. Chuck looks down, "Hang on boys, I'm hungry." The twins sit on Chuck's feet as he does a slow Frankenstein walk towards the food. The girls in his arms, the boys sitting on his feet. April right behind him.
Jeffrey walks alongside him as the other adults all laugh. "Need a hand Boss."
"Are you kidding me, I'm in heaven. I know you're just jealous and want to steal my cuddles."
Jeffrey laughs, "Okay, I'm busted. See you at the tables … tomorrow." He laughs as he moves off quickly while Chuck shuffles over slowly. The kids are laughing uproariously.
Chuck watches as Sarah grabs Gretchen's hand and drags her over to Momma. In Polish she says, "Momma, this is my good friend Gretchen Fager. Gretchen this is Mrs. Kozlowski."
Momma responds in English. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Fager. Do you like Polish food?"
Gretchen responds in Polish. "I love Polish foods. May I also call you Momma?"
Momma's eyebrows go up, "You speak Polish? Of course, you can call me Momma." She turns to Sarah, still in Polish. "This is the friend you told me about. For my Jeffrey? She's as beautiful as you said." She grabs Gretchen's hand and yanks her over towards Jeffrey calling his name. "Jeffrey, Jeffrey, come there's someone for you to meet. Tell me sweetheart are you a doctor?"
Gretchen laughs as she rushes to keep up. "No Momma, I'm not. I work with Chuck and Sarah."
Momma smiles, "So you make a good living. My Jeffrey also works for them. Jeffrey come meet this lovely girl." Sarah is laughing.
Sarah watches as Jeffrey sees Gretchen for the first time, his eyes go wide. "Holy Shit! You're gorgeous. I mean… jeez I'm sorry." He extends his hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you Ms. Fager." Sarah laughs behind her hand.
Gretchen smiles, as she takes his hand. "It's nice to meet you Jeffrey and thank you. Sarah has told me so much about you. Please call me Gretchen. Is it true you rescued their family at the Medieval Times show?"
Jeffery shrugs, "Um… well…"
Gretchen gives him a seductive smile, "Of course you did, why would Sarah lie about something like that?"
Chuck shakes his head as he drops the kids off with their parents. "Sarah, we talked about this."
Sarah looks surprised then innocent, "What? All I did was introduce Gretchen to Momma. That's all I did."
Chuck takes her in his arms. "Right little miss innocent spy lady. All I did was plant the bomb; Momma set it off."
"Oops, did I mess up Baby?" She kisses him along his jawline. "Can you ever forgive me?"
"I may, but if this goes wrong, Gretchen and Jeffrey may not. Personally, I wouldn't want to be on Momma's wrong side. What do you think is going happen if she breaks Jeffrey's heart."
"Chuck, they're adults. I'm sure they know what they're doing."
Chuck looks over at Momma pushing the two of them together. "Yeah, tell that to Momma. If I lose my supply of perogies, I may never speak to you again."
Sarah kisses him. "Then I guess we'll have to find some other use for that beautiful mouth of yours."
"I hope it works out, but right know I want some of Momma's food."
Momma comes over, "Oy Sarah, your friend is a beauty and so smart. Come let me feed you. Look I made chopped liver and knishes. Look a nice chicken soup with Kneidlach, and Kreplach (matzah balls and wonton) Clara and Ellie helped me with all the cooking. Chuck your sister and niece are gems; jewels I tell you. Also, I made your favorites, come, eat."
"Momma I can't believe you went to all this trouble. I'm sorry you can't make it to the wedding."
"You're sorry? It's all your fault. Mr. Bigshot Jeffrey has important work, and the restaurant is so busy who can leave for two days. But don't worry, that sweet girl Maggie made it so we can watch. Now come eat, you'll need to leave soon."
Sarah sits and Momma makes a plate for her, "Where's Poppa? I was hoping to give him a hug."
She puts the plate of food in front of Sarah, "Poppa? I told you already, someone has to watch the restaurant. We close for one day a week for the sabbath, and we get complaints." She puts a plate in front of Chuck, then grabs his face and plants a kiss on his cheek. "Oy, such a mensch. He didn't just save the restaurant, he made sure we'll be able to retire someday." She kisses him again. "Such a mensch. I'll give Poppa a hug for both of you."
She reaches into the pocket on her apron and brings out an envelope. She hands it to Sarah, "A little wedding present from the Kozlowski family."
Chuck gets upset, "Momma no, we couldn't. This lunch is more than enough. You wouldn't let me pay for it. It's enough." Sarah nods in agreement.
She sits down between them. "Chuck, Boychik your money is no good with us. Now, let me explain. In our tradition the letters that add up to eighteen are the same letters that mean life. So, the gift from us is twice chai, twice life. It's not about the money. It's about our wish that you will have a beautiful and wonderful life filled with children who will also call me Bubbie. Please accept this as a gift from our hearts to yours."
Sarah puts her arms around Momma and hugs her tight. "Thank you, Momma, that's a wonderful gift. Our children will call you Bubbie."
"Thank you, Sarahala. Now tell me, this Gretchen is a nice person, good for my Jeffrey?
Sarah looks at Chuck. Momma gets agitated, "What? tell me, it's my Jeffrey."
Chuck leans over and kisses her cheek. "Momma, Gretchen is a good woman. A dear friend and someone we trust with our children."
"Uh huh, but. I hear a but coming."
Sarah speaks softly. "Chuck has some concerns. He loves Jeffrey and doesn't want to see him get hurt. She hasn't had a lot of experience in lasting relationships. She's been a loner all of her life. I was a loner too, until I met Chuck. He changed my life. It's possible Jeffrey could do that for her. Especially with your support, but there are no promises.
Plus, she's in California for at least a while longer. We're all the family she has right now. It wouldn't be good for her to leave us so soon. Do you want Jeffrey to leave Chicago?"
Momma thinks for a few moments. "I appreciate that you want what's good for my son. You've proven that many times. I also know that she's not Jewish, also an issue." She smacks the table. "If my son can be happy, that's what I want. God leaves the cooking to me; I'll leave the matchmaking to him.
Look, such a good job he did for the two of you, and me and Poppa. Maybe she'll teach him to speak Polish. It will all work out the way it's meant to. I didn't survive those murderers in Poland to lose my faith. Thank you for being honest with me. I love you both like you're my own."
Momma stands up. "Eat, you have a wedding to get to." She pinches Chuck's cheek. "You boychik, you need to build your strength for the honeymoon." Sarah laughs. "When you leave, I'll have Jeffrey take the leftovers to your company. They've been such good customers. They order from us almost every day. They also tell all their clients about us. Thank you Bartowskis for coming into our lives. You see, he knows what he's doing. He brought you to us."
Chuck and Sarah stand up, they wrap Momma in a hug. "Okay enough, I want to save my tears for the wedding. I love you both. Sit, eat, I have work to do." She walks away to start clearing the tables of empty food containers.
Sarah leans over and feeds Chuck a piece of perogie, "She's a good woman, strong. We can learn a lot from her." Chuck nods as he chews. He feeds her a piece of knish. "Yum, that is so good, I love the contrast of the crunchy shell and the delicious soft filling. You know what? Our next trip to Chicago, I'm going to ask Momma to teach me some of her recipes."
Chuck swallows his food. "Maybe we can convince them to take a vacation in California when Jeffrey comes for training. We have plenty of room in the house now, and we still have the CI residence."
"I like that idea Chuckala. Have you had a chance to talk with Ellie yet?"
Chuck laughs, "Chuckala, huh? I gave her a quick hug, I wanted to make sure the kids were doing okay together. I'll have time with her on the next flight and in DC. We're going to have to have a talk about Frank's intentions. I definitely want you there for that discussion. I need your input. I can fix things, but you see the big picture."
Sarah hugs him, "Baby, I like that you appreciate me. But you see things pretty good."
Chuck smiles, "Hush woman, we're a team now and forever. Casey may catch me when I fall, but you're the one who keeps me away from that cliff edge."
Sarah's jaw drops. "Hush, woman? Someone just used up this year's supply of get out of jail free cards. I love you Hon. I'm going to get with HM and see where we are with the refueling and run my preflight checklist. Why don't you see how Jeffrey and Gretchen are doing."
Chuck checks in with the Woodcombs, "Everyone doing alright?" He bends and kisses Ellie's cheek. "I've really missed you, guys. I can't wait until the three of you are settled in back home."
Clara, jumps up and runs around to hug Chuck. "We miss you too Uncle Chuck. Did you like the food Mommy and me made with Bubbie?"
Ellie interjects, "I made with Bubbie, Sweetheart."
Clara looks at her like she's crazy. "I said you helped Mommy; I did." The table laughs.
Ellie shakes her head. "Yes Chuck, she's definitely your niece."
Chuck picks Clara up and blows a raspberry on her neck. She giggles wildly. "Yes, she is. Molly, what do you think about the rest of your family. Auntie Ellie is my big sister. When I was in big trouble Her and Uncle Devon took good care of me. I'll always be grateful to them for loving me."
Devon smiles, "Hey Bro, It's what family does."
Molly bounces in her seat, "I love them big brother, especially my cousins. It's good to have them to play with. I can't wait until they live closer." Clara wiggles her way to the floor and runs over to hug Molly.
"How are you doing Mrs. Sawyer? Did you enjoy your lunch?"
"Excuse me Chuck, we're not in the office now. The name is Grandma Bea, and you are Thomas' brother. He asked me to apologize. He won't be able to make the wedding. His squadron was scrambled at the last minute. Between the two of you and Sarah it's no wonder I have grey hair. Always running into trouble when everyone else is running the other way. The lunch was delicious."
I happen to have a couple of friends who might know what's going on. I'll see what I can find out, no promises." Bea nods. "It would seem that I'm obligated to circulate. Sarah is getting the plane ready to fly us to DC. Molly you and Clara need to decide who gets to fly the plane first. You also need to pick an adult to hold you on their lap."
Molly jumps up and hugs Mrs. Sawyer, "Clara can go first if she wants, but I pick Grandma Bea's lap." Beatrice Sawyer is at a loss for words. She strokes Molly's hair. "I would be honored Sweetheart, as long as it's okay with Mommy."
Emma smiles and nods. "Molly didn't have any grandparents till recently. It seems she has good taste. Of course it's okay."
Chuck bends and kisses Mrs. Sawyer's cheek. "Yes, she has exquisite taste. I'll see you guys soon." She squeezes the hand he put on her shoulder. "Ellie, Devon, your baggage is loaded."
He walks over and whispers in Ellie's ear, "The four of us need to talk before we get to the White House. We should have a chance when we land." Ellie nods. Chuck wanders over to Gretchen and Jeffrey who somehow managed to find a corner to sit alone.
"Hey guys, how's it going? Sorry you have to work this weekend, Jeffrey. We'll miss you at the wedding."
Jeffrey stands up, "No problem, Boss, I appreciate the opportunity you gave me. I also appreciate meeting your lovely friend." Gretchen smiles.
Chuck grunts. Gretchen Jumps up, "Uh oh, guess It's time to go. Jeffrey it was very nice meeting you. I hope we'll get to spend some time together when you come to Burbank for training." She gives him a quick hug. She walks past Chuck on the way to the plane and whispers. "Isn't one Casey enough?"
Chuck grunts and Gretchen laughs.
Jeffrey stares at Chuck, "Is there a problem Boss?"
Chuck puts his hand on Jeffrey's shoulder, "Nothing we haven't discussed before. She's a good woman. Let's give her some time to figure out who she wants to be. I would hate to see you get hurt. I think it would be great if you get to spend time together in Burbank." Chuck puts on an evil smile. "Especially since I can keep you so tired and sore you won't be able to get in trouble. By the way, Sarah and I would love to have your parents join you when you come for training. You can all stay in the company penthouse.
"Somehow it doesn't feel like I should say thank you. But I get where you're coming from. Slow and easy is that the message?"
Chuck nods and takes Jeffrey in a hug. "I knew you were a good man. Time to go, but we'll see you soon. Walk me to the plane. Jeffrey, are you doing okay at CI, do you need anything?"
Jeffrey shakes his head as they walk together. "Chuck, Mr. Steele has been great. Everyone has been patient and supportive. I love working for you. I'll let my folks know about you're invitation."
Chuck gets ready to climb the steps into the plane. He offers his hand, "Glad to hear it. Take good care of Momma and Poppa. We'll see you soon." Chuck bends his head as he climbs the steps and walks into the hatch. Jeffrey waves as HM pulls the steps up sealing the hatch.
The tractor pulls the craft out of the hangar as Sarah runs through her checklist and contacts the tower requesting clearance. She smiles when she looks to her right at Clara sitting on Chuck's lap, Beauty in her lap. Chuck looks back at her and throws her a kiss.
Sarah starts the jet engines and taxis to the runway getting in line with the other planes waiting to take off. "Okay Clara, did you hear that, the tower just cleared us to take off. Put your hand on mine and help me move the throttle. That will feed fuel to the engines and make us move." The small jet moves forward picking up speed. "Okay Uncle Chuck help Clara on the stick we're almost at airspeed."
Clara puts her hands on the wheel in front of her, Chuck's hands are over hers. "Here we go Munchkin, Auntie Sarah will move the wheel we just hold on loosely." The nose of the plane lifts and Clara squeals, "Yay, I'm flying an airplane."
Sarah is focused flying the plane, once they reach cruising altitude, she turns on the autopilot and relaxes a bit. "So Clara, catch us up, we haven't seen you in a while."
Clara is being very attentive to her flying duties as she talks. "I missed you both a lot after you left. But it was good that April was there. She takes me to school in the morning and picks me up at lunch time. Then we have lunch at home. Mommy has been working a lot more since April lives with us. After lunch we go to the park then I take my nap, but sometimes we have a tea party. After my nap I get to talk to Molly on the phone." She puts on a sad face. "But April makes me hang up so we can study my numbers and letters. She also teaches me about other countries and the people in Washington. She told me all about the President. She was surprised that he's my friend and we talked on the phone."
Sarah voice indicates her excitement, "Wow that sounds like a full day."
Clara bounces on Chuck's lap, "Wait, I'm not done yet. After we study Mommy comes home and we make dinner. Then Mommy, Daddy, if he's not at the hospital, April and I eat dinner. Then we play games and listen to music."
Chuck whistles, "Wow you're a busy young lady."
Clara let's out an exaggerated sigh of exasperation. "Uncle Chuck, please stop interrupting."
Chuck lets out a snort, "Well, excuuuusssse me. I thought maybe you wanted to take a breath. Please continue."
"Thank you. So after that I take my bath and get in my pajamas, and I get to talk to Molly again until it's time to go to sleep." She lets out a long breath, "Now I'm done. Oh wait, wait. Sometimes on Sunday or sometimes in the afternoon Mommy and I go to help Bubbie cook at the restaurant. Okay, now I'm done."
Chuck and Sarah laugh gently. Sarah reaches over and squeezes Clara's hand. "Like Uncle Chuck said, that's quite a day."
Chuck squeezes her from behind. "Sounds like my niece is happy. That makes me happy."
"I am happy. Uncle Chuck, Auntie Sarah, would it be okay if I go play with Molly now. Beauty didn't get to spend too much time with her before."
Chuck helps her to the deck and stands. "Of course Sweetheart, come on let's go into the cabin." She takes his hand, and they head back. Molly looks up from her seat and sees Clara. She turns to Emma, "Mommy can I go play with Clara, before I fly the plane."
Emma nods, "Have fun. Try to be quiet, the twins are napping. Be good for your Aunts. You'll let me know if you want a nap."
"Yes Mommy, I'll be good. I'm not tired right now. Soon I'm going to fly the plane with Grandma Bea." Molly hesitates. "Mommy, I didn't hurt your feelings, did I? I see you every day, but…"
Emma smiles. "No hard feelings Sweetheart. I'm glad you have Grandma Bea. I know she loves you. Go play with Clara, have fun." Clara arrives next to her. Molly kisses her mother on the cheek and runs off. Chuck fills her empty seat.
Emma looks at him. "Thank you, Chuck."
Chuck looks at her quizzically, then raises his arm to sniff his armpit. "I regularly shower Mom. I didn't do it just for you."
Emma snickers. "While I appreciate that fact, it's not what I was referring to. I was thanking you for making my daughter happy… both of them. You know what, I've been happier too since I met you."
Chuck shrugs. "I've been happier too since you and Molly are in our lives. I think maybe you made Sarah happier. I know Clara's over the moon."
Emma looks at him. "You're not going to let me say thank you, are you? I owe you so much."
Chuck stands up and leans over to kiss her cheek. He whispers in her ear. "You don't owe me a darn thing. I will be forever in your debt. You created the greatest gift any man could ever receive." He stands up. "I haven't spent much time with my sister. I'll see you when we land."
Emma reaches up and grabs his arm. "Sit, I have something important to discuss with you."
Chuck sits back down and buckles in. Emma takes a deep breath, "You really love her, don't you?"
Chuck looks at her shocked at the question. "I love Sarah with all my heart."
Emma laughs, "Yes, that's pretty obvious, I meant Molly."
Chuck's eyes glaze over. "Like she were my own. I couldn't love her more."
Emma nods, "I guess I knew that too. You've been very polite. You haven't asked why I let my Ex raise Sarah. Someday we can discuss that. For now I'll tell you that I had some health problems. Sarah adored her father; he was her hero. She was supposed to live with my mother, but she ran away. Thank God she's past that."
"Mom, that's old news."
Emma smiles. "I love it when you call me Mom. True, but some of that is also the present. I'm not a young woman Chuck. I'm not old, but my body has had some hard times." She leans back and rubs her eyes. "Chuck, I need to know that if the need arises… Molly will be taken care of."
Chuck looks at Emma with a cross look as he speaks softly. "I'm hurt that you would even ask me this. You have to know we see Molly as our daughter, as much as she's yours. I also know we can never tell her that. Molly… and you will always be well taken care of. Come to CI, we'll have the lawyers get the paperwork done. Are you finished being ridiculous?"
Emma smiles and strokes his cheek. "My daughter is a lucky woman. Even when you're angry, you're a gentleman. Yes, I'm done. Can we keep most of this conversation between us? Sarah may be upset that I questioned your devotion. One more thing… thank you Chuck." Chuck nods and heads off to speak to Ellie and Devon.
Chuck walks over to Ellie and Devon. "Guys hang out on the plane after we land. When Sarah gets done in the cockpit the four of us can have a quick chat while they unload the baggage and get the others on the bus."
"No problemo Chuck. April can look after Clara."
Sarah's voice fills the air. "Ladies and gentlemen, we'll begin our final approach shortly. Please take your seats and buckle in. Co-pilots get your butts into the cockpit ASAP." Chuck finds the empty seat next to Emma and buckles in.
Molly looks at Mrs. Sawyer. "Oh, oh. Grandma, we better hurry." She hugs Clara, I'll see you when we land." The two ladies hurry forward. As Molly and Bea pass by Chuck shouts, "Have fun, Molly. Land us safely."
"Okay Big Brother, I'll do my best." They enter the cockpit and close the door. Bea sits down, Molly climbs on her lap, and they're both buckled in.
Sarah looks over to make sure they're secure. "Okay little Sis. Put your hands on the wheel, just like mine. Hold on lightly, let me do all the moving, okay?" Molly nods. "Okay here we go. Grandma Bea, please put her headphones on so she can communicate with the tower." Bea puts the headset on Molly. Sarah flips a switch so Bea and the passengers can listen in on the speakers.
"Ladies and gentlemen in deference to our Medal of Honor recipient we'll be landing At Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport." Casey grunts. "Reagan National Tower this is Charlie India One, requesting clearance to land."
"Charlie India One we have you on RADAR, you're cleared to land. Approach from the north, continue to Runway 1/19. You have special clearance. Taxi to the apron, you'll be towed into a private hanger."
"Okay Molly, this is it. Keep your hands on the wheel let me do the work. You'll feel a little bump when the landing gear touches down. Say this, Charlie India One, beginning our approach."
Molly is excited as she repeats Sarah's word. "Charlie India One, beginning our approach."
"Charlie India One, we have you visual. No offense, are you sure you're old enough to fly?"
Molly is joyful as she answers, "Sure, I'm almost seven. My sister Sarah is teaching me."
Sarah laughs, "Relax Tower, I have the pilot's seat."
The wheels touch the ground with barely a bump. "Nice landing Charlie India One. Taxi to starboard, stop on the apron and shutdown. Your tow is waiting. Is sister Sarah free for dinner tonight?"
Chuck leans up and yells at the speaker, "HEY!"
Gretchen and Casey crack up laughing.
Sarah laughs as she guides the craft to the assigned area. "Let me check with my husband, I'll see if we have anything planned."
Chuck relaxes, "That's better."
Charlie India One, "This is Tower, um… I don't know who that was. Someone broke into our transmission. Have a nice visit in out nation's capital. Tower out."
Sarah shuts the engines down. She announces over the PA. "HM, would you mind finishing up?"
A minute or two later the cockpit door opens. "I've got it Ma'am. Great job landing Molly, barely a bump."
Bea unbuckles and helps Molly to the deck. "Thank you, HM, but Sarah did the hard part." She leans across to kiss Sarah on the cheek. "Thanks Sis, that was super fun." She turns back and kisses Bea. "Thank you, Grandma Bea, You have a very nice lap. Sarah, can I go see Clara now?" Sarah nods and Molly rushes past HM to leave the cockpit.
Bea and Sarah laugh as they get up. "Sarah, your little sister is a doll and a hoot. I can't help but imagine you were the same at her age. The best part is, Chuck is still like that."
Sarah laughs. "Thanks Bea. HM Would you mind assisting the passengers in moving their luggage over to the bus? After we're parked of course. By the way, thank you for letting me fly your baby. We'll see you in a couple of weeks. Be safe, get our family back home safe."
"No problem, Ma'am. I could tell he liked you handling him." Sarah smiles at the masculine reference.
Sarah and Bea move into the passenger cabin where Sarah is greeted by cheers and applause. She puts her arm across her waist and takes a deep bow, waving her left arm in the air. "Thank you, thank you. For my next act I will turn a handsome nerd into a loving husband." The cabin is filled with laughter. Casey's grunt is heard above the laughter. Chuck steps over and hugs her. "I know how you do that trick. It's my favorite."
HM comes out the cockpit, "Okay folks, we're parked. If you'll follow me, we'll get you situated on the bus. Once you're comfortable I'll deal with getting your baggage over." He pulls the latching bar to release the hatch and drop the steps. He walks down and turns to help the passengers to the ground.
As they unload, Chuck and Sarah take seats and motions Ellie and Devon to join them in the front lounge chairs. The plane empties and the Woodcombs Come over and sit. Ellie is shaking her head, "Sarah, is there anything you can't do?"
"Yep, I can't be happy without my husband and family. I also can't beat Chuck in a fair fight, so I have to cheat. I give him a little pout and he lets me win. I also can't talk about how to upload computer data into the human brain. I'll leave that to you."
Chuck leans forward, "Good segue Hon. That's exactly what we need to talk about. El, we don't have a lot of time. What I'm about to tell both of you, you can't know. Someone wiped all information and programming pertaining to the Intersect from every computer around the world."
Devon sits back and whistles. "Who could possibly do that?"
Chuck smiles, "I've only known one man capable of that. El and I watched him get shot. I put my best cybertech on it. She couldn't find any trace of the perpetrator. I checked her work, she was thorough.
Ellie, I'm about to put you in a very difficult position. The President is going to try and get what you know about Dad's work and yours. I think it best that he doesn't get it. I believe that Dad was upset that Roark almost used his work to weaponize his people. Until there's a way to control who uses his tech and for what purpose, it's best that it doesn't exist. That's my opinion."
Chuck sits back and gives them time to consider what he's said. Sarah simply says. "Chuck and I have seen what this can do in the wrong hands. I agree with him." She sits back and waits.
Devon raises his hand and leans in. "Guys, I've had my fill of all this spy stuff. That doesn't mean that I don't understand. What I do understand is that my Bro-in-Law has great instincts. Plus if Sarah backs him up, I can't see him being wrong. I mean look at April. She's fantastic. She's made our family better. Ellie and I are more relaxed, and Clara is happy as can be. I get that she's not an actual spy, but… I guess what I'm saying is I trust Chuck's opinion." He sits back.
Ellie rubs her forehead. "Hon, this isn't about whether or not I trust Chuck and Sarah. That goes without saying. This is about how the hell do I say no to the President. How do I act stupid when I know he's read my papers?
"Now you know what I meant by a difficult position. The President knows I have the Intersect. But you can say you haven't been able to make it work. As far as anyone knows I uploaded from the computer we found in Dad's car. No one outside of the four of us knows that you know that I have it."
"Ellie, Chuck's right. At a minimum you can stall, until we find a way to make your research safe. You can say that your research was to make sure your brother wasn't suffering any lasting ill effects. That you have no idea how your Dad designed his program. Defer to Chuck. Let him handle the rest."
Ellie sighs, "I guess that'll work Sarah. I was hoping all of this was behind us. haven't we lost enough. Mom for years, Dad. You and Chuck, and you and I separated. Haven't we given enough? I really hate this spy stuff."
Sarah gets down on her knees and takes Ellie's hand in hers. "I know Sis, I know. Trust me I've asked the same questions, over and over. But I also know that because of the way things worked out Chuck has been able to save millions of lives, including mine. You may not know it, but, yours, Devon's and Clara's as well. I've… we've accepted that sometimes we have to accept the bad to have the good. So many owe their lives to your brother, and they'll never have the chance to say thank you. This is what we signed up for, to help those who need help. "
Chuck adds, "Sounds like a couple of doctors we know."
Ellie laughs, "Well now we know where Clara gets her smart aleck attitude."
The four laugh as Chuck stands up, "Group hug, we have people waiting for us." They all come together and hug.
Sarah adds one last note, "Devon, stay away from the President, you're the world's worst liar. Ellie is a lucky woman." They all laugh again as they head for the exit.
The White House
The bus ride is abuzz with expectations of arrival at the White House. The bus drives without stopping through a gate entrance to the White House, then pulls into an underground garage near a set of doors. The driver stands and faces the group. "Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the White House. Please excuse the surreptitious entry. The President thought it best to shield you from the press onslaught. Please remain seated. An agent will board shortly to explain procedures. Mr. and Mrs. Bartowski, please join me outside the bus."
Chuck and Sarah climb down off the bus behind the driver. Those on the right side of the bus watch as a group of people dressed in black suits walk over to them and discuss something. Sarah nods and turns back to climb on the bus. "Hi family, I'm going to introduce you to some very nice people. One is a close friend of mine. The others are Secret Service agents who will explain what's going to happen, and what's expected of guests of the White House.
Let's get started." She turns towards the door and waves. A woman walks towards the door. "First, I'd like you to meet my dear friend Joyce. You may know her as FLOTUS, or the First Lady of the United States."
There's applause as Joyce climbs up and hugs Sarah then stands next to her. She smiles and waves, "Hi everyone, I'm Joyce. Welcome to my home, I guess it's also your home. You all pay your taxes, right?" The group laughs. Gretchen waves from her seat. "Hi Gretchen, good to see you again. Zondra asked me to let you know she's here and looks forward to seeing you."
She looks at Clara, "I'll bet that's Beauty, that means you must be Clara." Clara nods and hugs Beauty. "That means that little blonde cutie over there is Molly, and these two handsome young men are MJ and LJ. I hope that you'll all call me Aunt Joyce.
I'm guessing you're tired of sitting and are maybe a little hungry. There are lots of nods from the kids. "Okay, kids let's get you off the bus. Uncle Chuck is going to take you to your tea party. You'll need a change of clothes and diapers. Sarah and Chuck have agreed to handle that."
"Okay kids, come with me, Uncle Chuck is waiting for us." Sarah steps off the bus and helps the kids down as they follow her to a waiting Chuck. They walk the kids away from the bus into the White House doors.
When Sarah steps down two agents climb in and stand to either side of FLOTUS. "Okay folks, I want to apologize. This next part is not great, but necessary. I didn't want to traumatize the children by having to watch their parents get strip searched. I promise we'll get to know each other better after all the security stuff is out of the way. Ladies you'll follow Agent Honey West. Gentlemen you'll go with Agent James West, before you ask, no relation." Gretchen raises her hand. "Yes Sweetheart, what can I do for you?"
With total seriousness Gretchen asks. "Can I go with James instead of Honey."
Joyce throws her head back and laughs with the other occupants of the bus. "Gretchen behave yourself. Your belongings will be searched and taken to your rooms. Folks, remember where you are. Jokes that sound like threats are taken seriously. Follow directions and we'll all have a great visit.
I'll join you shortly in the East Garden Room for a light dinner and Tea Party. Please don't wander around without an escort. John, Frank asked if you could put aside a few minutes for him. He's expecting you in the Oval office." Casey nods and grunts, he stands and exits the bus. "My husband asked me to apologize, seems running the country takes up a lot of his time. But you have my word, he will be joining us when he can." Joyce climbs down off the bus and is escorted into the White House.
The Oval Office
Casey walks through the doors into the building. He's greeted by a young woman who holds out a badge that reads: Major General John Casey. Visitor, No escort required. Casey clips it to his jacket. "Welcome to the White House General. My name is Susan McNamara, I'm a personal assistant to the President. Please call me Susie. You are cleared to move around freely. However the President thought you might prefer it if I show you the way to the Oval office."
Casey grunts and waves his hand indicating she should lead the way.
Susie smiles, "Right this way Sir." She starts to walk down a long corridor. "Sir, I'd like to say it's an honor to meet you. The President and First Lady speak highly of you." Casey grunts. Casey is quiet as they walk. After many corridors and turns, past offices filled with people hustling, they arrive at a door. Susie opens the door, "Right this way Sir." Susie approaches a woman at the large desk facing the door. "General Casey for the President, he's expected."
The woman smiles, "Welcome General, I'll let the President know you're here." She picks up the phone and presses a button. "Sir, General Casey is here. No sir I won't keep him waiting." She hangs up the phone. "Please General, go right in." Susie opens the door and Casey walks into the Oval Office, the door closes behind him.
Frank steps out from behind his large ornamental desk and walks over to Casey his hand extended. "John, it's good to see you again." Casey takes the hand and shakes it. "Come sit, I only have a few minutes. I'm doing my best to clear my desk so I can spend time with all of you this weekend." He takes a seat in an armchair and points to a couch opposite him. "Sit, looks like you have friends in high places. I received this diplomatic pouch yesterday; it's addressed to you. I'll be happy to step out if you'd like some privacy."
"Thank you, Sir. That isn't necessary." Casey takes the pouch and breaks the seal. He reaches in and pulls out a letter.
"To my Good and Dear Friend Generalissimo Casey. My Angel of Life.
First allow me to assure you that I am taking good care of the generous gift that you gave me. Your blood still flows through my veins, and I am in good health. My sweet love Hortensia and I are devastated that we could not make it to your award ceremony and the wedding of our dear friends Chuck and Sarah.
The political climate in Costa Gravas right now would not allow such friendliness between us. However, I did receive a message from Chuck, he asked for a wedding present from us. How can I say no to the man who helped to bring the love of my life back to me. He instructed that the present be sent to you in care of the white House.
Congratulations on your award. Please send Hortensia's and my best wishes for a long life together, and our love, to Chuck and Sarah. There will always be a place in our home and our hearts for our American friends.
All our Best,
Alejandro and Hortensia Goya."
Casey reaches into the pouch and retrieves a wrapped box. Tearing the paper off, he starts to laugh. Frank stares at him. Casey holds the box up and shows him his box of Costa Gravas cigars. Then he tells the story of his cigar falling into the coffee cup.
Frank laughs, "That's our Chuck. He never misses a detail." Casey opens the box and offers it to Frank. "Wish I could, maybe later, outside. Where Joyce and the press can't catch me. Hmmm, I think maybe, you might like a tour of the emergency bunker."
The East Garden room
Master Chief Child has created a tasty Tea party for the kids. Mini hot dogs, sliders, and crispy French fries. It's followed by frozen yogurt sundaes to order, for dessert. Chuck and April sit with them assisting as needed, pouring the Decaf iced tea, milk, and opening juice boxes.
The adults have various quiches, smoked salmon, bagels with cream cheese. fresh salads. Wine and other alcoholic drinks are available along with coffee, tea, and juices. The Sundae Bar is available to the adults as well. Joyce joins the group for dinner and is enjoying a chat with Sarah when two Secret Service agents walk through the door. The President enters followed by Casey. Everyone stands. He waves his hands. "Relax everyone, if you stand every time you see me this weekend, I'll wind up with a huge bill from your orthopedic doctors, relax.
Okay who's going to introduce me to everyone. Wait, no need to tell me who those beautiful ladies are." He walks over to the kids table. Let's see that's Clara and Molly and of course Beauty." He squats, "Hi, I'm Frank, I would like it if you called me Uncle Frank. Would that be, okay?" April is stunned, holy crap she was telling the truth, they are friends.
Molly and Clara nod. "I take it these handsome gentlemen are your husbands." The girls laugh, Molly says, "You're silly Uncle Frank. Those are our cousins, MJ, and LJ."
Clara nods, "I'm gonna marry Jeffrey after I'm a doctor like Mommy."
"I see, well Jeffery is a lucky man. If you're a doctor like your mom, you're going to be a great doctor. What about you Molly, do you want to be a doctor too?"
Molly shakes her head, "Uh, uh my sister Sarah is teaching me to be a pilot so I can fly to different places. I could come and visit you and Aunt Joyce if you'd like."
Frank's eyes go wide, followed by a big smile. "I would love that. Any chance you ladies have a hug hidden in one of your pockets?" The girls look at each other and then throw their arms around his neck. "OH MY. I think that's the best pocket hug I've ever had. Anyone want to tell me who all these people are."
MJ and LJ slide off their seats, they walk over and point at Chuck. In unison they say, "That's Unca Chuck. He's, our uncle."
Frank laughs, "Stereo, I like it. Hi Uncle Chuck, how are you?"
Chuck smiles, "I'm good Uncle Frank, good to see you again. Maybe the kids would like to finish their sundaes while Auntie Sarah does the introductions. By the way before you run off, this is April Dancer, Clara's nanny and, one of my top operatives."
The kids release Frank to go back to their ice cream. He stands up and walks over to offer his hand to April. "It's an honor to meet you Master Sergeant, you have an impressive folder. Seems that Chuck surrounds himself with only the best. Rangers still lead the way."
"Thank you, Mr. President, the honor is mine. Don't believe everything you read."
Frank purses his lips, "When it comes to the stuff I get from congress, I agree with you. In your case, I have a feeling I can take it to the bank. Thank you for your service. By the way I don't think Uncle Frank would be good for us, lets just go with Frank."
April smiles, "Yes Sir, thank you Sir."
Frank laughs as Sarah steps up to his side. "You'll get the hang of it before the weekend is over. He looks around. "Joyce why don't you join us." The First Lady walks over to stand beside him. "Okay Auntie Sarah, who's next?"
The President and FLOTUS make the rounds, shaking hands. He makes it clear how he got elected. He's a man with charisma and charm. Sarah walks around the tables with him. "Of course, you know Gretchen and Zondra."
"I do, Ladies, nice to see you again. I owe you a debt of gratitude. You took care of a problem that was hanging over our heads for years. How is it working with Batman?"
Zondra looks at Gretchen, "You know Batman?" Gretchen shrugs. Zondra smiles, "It's nothing less than spectacular Sir. He's without a doubt the best I've worked with, next to Sarah of course."
Frank smiles and shakes their hands, "Well he's said nothing but good things about both of you. Seems the DCI shares his opinion about you Chief Rizzo. Gretchen, I was warned that if I try to bring you back into government service, I'll have to fight Chuck."
Gretchen laughs, "I would strongly recommend against that Frank. I made that mistake once. Never again." Frank laughs.
Sarah brings him over where Mary is chatting with Emma. "Speaking of the DCI, you know my mother-in-law."
"I do, we had a briefing this morning, she gave me the lowdown on our guests and the Russians, Chinese, North Koreans, etcetera, etcetera. I keep Mary plenty busy."
Mary stands and shakes his hand, "Nice to meet with you socially, Sir."
Frank leans in, "When we're alone or with friends, Frank is fine."
Mary smiles, "Yes Sir, thank you."
Frank turns to Sarah, "You can always tell the career professionals. They have a hard time letting go of protocol."
Sarah smiles wide, "Mr. President, It's my pleasure to introduce you to my mother, Emma Cole."
Emma stands, her hand goes to her throat. "Oh my! You're the President."
Frank extends his hand, "Only for a while, But I'll always be Frank. It's nice to meet you, Emma. Your daughter is a wonderful woman. I might also mention you couldn't do better for a son-in-law." Mary smiles.
Emma stares at Frank's hand. Sarah laughs, "Mom, shake the man's hand, don't leave him hanging."
Emma gasps, "I'm sorry Mr. President, I didn't mean to be disrespectful."
Frank shakes his head "Okay that's it." He turns to the room. He speaks loudly. "Listen up everybody." The room gets quiet. "This is a presidential order; my name is Frank. Please call me Frank except for official government business.
Joyce interrupts him, "FRANK!"
"Okay, fine. Just please call me Frank. That lady who once again stopped me from putting my foot in my mouth is the love of my life. She's also the one who really runs things around here. Thank you, Joyce." He turns back to Emma, "Now where were we?"
She reaches down and grabs his hand to shake it. "It's a pleasure to meet you …Frank."
He smiles, "The pleasure is all mine." Have you met Joyce?"
Joyce steps over and hugs Emma, "We've had the pleasure of a long phone call and a brief chat over a glass of wine. I believe I may have neglected to mention how wonderful her daughter is, but I'm guessing she already knows that."
Sarah smiles and Emma beams. "Thank you… Frank, Joyce. Yes, she is pretty wonderful. I couldn't be prouder. Please, don't let me keep you, I know there are others dying to meet you." Emma sits down and grabs Mary's hand. Under her breath she mutters, "Oh my, that's the President."
Mary pats her hand, "Relax Emma, the real big shots in this room are our kids, they're the ones that make him look good."
Sarah steps over to a familiar couple. "Mr. President, Frank, allow me to introduce the Woodcombs. Ellie and Devon, Clara's parents. This is Frank and Joyce."
He shakes Devon's hand then, Ellie's. He puts his second hand over hers and holds it. "You should be proud; Clara is a wonderful little girl. Smart as a whip. She's dead set on being a doctor like her parents." Sarah catches the change. Hmmm, he's up to something. He pats her hand, "So Ellie do you have some time for a chat? I'm fascinated with your research on the brain. I won't take up too much of your time, I know you'll want to tuck Clara in."
"Mr. President, Frank, I'd hate to take up your time for no reason. My papers pretty much spell out what I know and what I don't know. My primary concern is what effect the government's actions had on my brother's brain and his overall health."
Sarah is paying close attention. So the government hurt your brother. Nice! Watch it Ellie, you're letting your spy DNA show.
"You sell yourself short Dr. Woodcomb. Your take on the effects of electrical impulses syncing with neuro-synapsis is way beyond where others have gone."
Ellie nods, "I see where you've made your mistake. That's my father's work. I'm merely following the damage caused by those experiments. I didn't get to work much with my father before one of your agents shot and killed him."
Sarah smiles inwardly, Smart Sis, put him on the defensive. But be careful, he's a pro.
Frank frowns, "Yes that was a sad turn of events. Surely you know I had no part in that."
Ellie acts sad, "Of course, we know that, but… I hope you'll excuse me. I'm getting a headache. I think I'd like to lie down for a bit. Devon, would you get Clara please. I'll meet you in our room. Frank my brother has some interest in following up on Dad's work, perhaps you should talk with him."
Sarah moves to put her arm around Ellie. "Frank, Joyce, I hope you'll excuse us, I'm sure you understand. Ellie was there, she saw it happen. Come on Ellie, I'll get you some aspirin."
Frank is contrite, "Of course, Please let my staff know if there's anything you need."
Chuck comes over when he sees Sarah helping Ellie out of the room. "What's going on Frank?"
"Sorry Chuck, I used an unfortunate choice of words and reminded your sister of your father's fate. I feel awful."
Chuck pats his shoulder, "I'm sure she'll be fine. Let me see if I can help." Chuck follows behind the two ladies.
Frank whispers to Joyce, "Sweetheart, one of two things just happened. Either I screwed up royally, or I just got played by a master. In any case, I don't think Ellie Woodcomb will be joining my research team."
"I'm sure it'll work out. Chuck and Sarah haven't failed you yet. Let's not ruin the party."
Frank nods, "Mmmm that's true. I'd better get back to work. I have a full desk and two ceremonies to prep. Joyce would you please check on Ellie in a little while. Extend my apologies for my poor choice of words. Damn, you'd think I'd know better." He kisses Joyce. "It's going to be a late-night Hon; I'll try not to wake you when I come in."
Once in Ellie's room, Sarah takes Ellie's shoes off and helps her lie down. As she plumps her pillow she whispers in her ear. "We don't know who's listening."
Ellie nods, "I'll be fine Sarah. I understand. He didn't mean to bring that up. It always hits me hard. I see Dad getting shot in my mind."
There's a light knock at the door , "Hon, it's me. Is Ellie Okay?"
Sarah opens the door. "She's fine Chuck, just a little shook up. Frank…"
Chuck walks over and sits on the bed next to Ellie. "Yeah, he told me. He didn't mean anything by it El."
"I Know Chuck, But I really miss Dad. Can I have a hug little brother."
Chuck leans down and Ellie holds him close. She whispers in his ear. "I played him great. He won't be coming after me again."
Chuck pushes his face into Ellie's shoulder to keep from laughing. "It'll be okay Sis; we still have each other."
The door opens and Devon enters with Clara in his arms. "Are you okay Babe?"
"I'll be fine after a little rest. Clara this is a special occasion, so you get to sleep with Mommy and Daddy in our bed."
Clara rubs her eyes, "Okay Mommy, I'm tired. I think I ate too much ice cream and hot dogs."
Chuck stands up, we'll let you guys get some rest. We'll see you in the morning." Chuck and Sarah walk out hand in hand. On the way to the Lincoln bedroom they run into Casey.
"Hey what's up with formerly Bartowski, everyone was talking about how she left sick."
Sarah kisses his cheek. "It's nice of you to worry about Ellie. She's fine, just needs a little rest. What's that under your arm?"
Casey gets a big smile on his face. He holds the box out. "Oh, you mean my box of Costa Gravas cigars. Seems our boy here kept his word. Special delivery from Alejandro, and Hortensia Goya. Delivered in a diplomatic pouch along with regrets and best wishes for your wedding." Casey hands Sarah the letter, then puts his arms around Chuck and squeezes hard. "Thanks kid, you're the best."
Chuck is in shock, he turns to Sarah, "Did he just…"
Sarah laughs, "Uh huh."
"Sarah, I think we were drugged, and someone replaced Casey with a pod person. Run, save the President."
"Very funny Nerd, you'd better get some rest. I'd hate to have you throw up on the President cause you got scared. See you in the morning. Breakfast in the East Garden Room. G'night."
Breakfast is served to the guests as they wander into the East Garden Room. Master Chief set up an omelet bar including pancakes, French toast, waffles made to order. There are also chafing dishes with hash brown potatoes, bacon, sausages, turkey bacon, vegan bacon, corned beef hash. There's also bagels, toast, and breakfast rolls. Moving down the line there's fresh fruit salad, whipped butter, peanut butter, and Jelly.
The Woodcombs are enjoying breakfast when Casey walks in. He fills a plate and joins them. "Are you doing okay formerly Bartowski?"
Ellie laughs, "Have you forgotten my name John?"
Casey bites into a sausage with a loud snap. "Nah, it just makes it easier to keep you all straight. Seriously Ellie, are you okay?"
"I'm fine John, thanks for asking." Mary walks over with a plate of food, followed by Chuck and Sarah, Gretchen and Zondra.
Casey stands, "I guess this is family time. I'll see you all later."
A loud commanding voice comes from behind him. "Sit your butt down Marine. This is my family and you're part of it. SIT." Casey drops back into his chair.
Beckman sits down with her food, "Sorry I missed you all last night. We have a situation in Europe." She looks at Chuck. "Buzzsaw is safe enough, at least for now."
Clara jumps off her chair and puts her head on Beckman's lap, "Hi Grandma Diane, we missed you too. We had a tea party with ice cream and cake."
Beckman is taken aback; she hesitantly strokes Clara's hair. "Thank you, Clara, maybe we can have some together, later."
Sarah smiles, "We've been showing Clara pictures of all her family that she may see here."
Beckman is clearly at a loss for words. She mouths the words "thank you" at Sarah.
The room is filled with the guests all enjoying the delicious food. Master Chief stands up in front of the buffet. "I want to thank you all for the compliments my staff has received on our food. However, I need to acknowledge the inspiration for my cuisine. Chuck, Sarah, and General Casey. It has been my honor and privilege to cook for them and their guests. The President asked me to remind you that the Medal of Honor ceremony will begin promptly at 10. Please be sure you're seated in The Rose Garden, before then.
General Casey, I know I'm not in uniform, but there's no way I can't do this. Kitchen staff, Atten-hut." Military and civilian staff pop tall. Julian brings his hand up to his brow in a salute."
Casey stands and returns the salute. "Thank you. Master Chief, it's you and your people who should be saluted you've proven that cooking is indeed an art." He starts to clap, and the rest of the group join him in appreciating the cooks. When the applause dies down. "I'll expect you in full dress uniform for the ceremony."
"Aye, aye General, wouldn't miss it for the world."
As the guests filter out the kitchen staff starts to clean up. As Julian bends to retrieve a chafing dish he's grabbed from behind and squeezed. "Guess who?"
He laughs, "Chuck would be okay, but I'm hoping for Sarah."
Suddenly a second set of arms encircle him. "Would you settle for both of us?"
He turns and wraps his arms around the couple. "You know, I never seem to get enough of you two. Was the food, okay?"
Chuck laughs, "Okay? Does okay mean superlative, fantastic, wonderful, magnificent? if so, then yes it was okay."
"I'm glad you liked it. Now go away, I have to get cleaned up and dressed for the ceremony. I'm part of the honor guard. Shoo, I'll see you later."
They let him get back to work. He notices Mrs. Sawyer heading towards the door. "Bea."
She turns and waits for them to catch up. "Thomas is safe and sound. If we hear anything else, we'll let you know."
She hugs Chuck, "Thanks Boss, it's good to have friends in high places."
The room is emptied as everyone leaves the room to get dressed for the medal ceremony. The Secret Service does a good job being low key. Escorting friendly and professional without being overbearing.
The White House Rose Garden, Washington D.C.
It's a beautiful day in DC. The Cherry Blossoms along the National Mall are in full bloom. The White House Rose Garden, established in 1913 by Ellen Louise Axson Wilson, wife of Woodrow Wilson, is displaying all its budding glory. The guests' eyes are treated to a wide spectrum of colors. Reds, yellows, shades of white and pink. Vision is not the only sense treated to a delight. A deep breath fills each person's nose with a fragrance that thrills and creates joy. The very air is bursting with the scent of those roses, nurtured over the years, by the subsequent elected occupants and their families.
A portion of the Marine band plays Hail to the Chief as The President walks towards the podium that's been setup in The Rose Garden. The crowd stands. The president arrives at the podium. The band stops playing, and he waves the people into their seats. "Please be seated this ceremony is not about me. It's about a true American hero, Major General John Casey.
The Medal of Honor is the highest award for bravery that can be given to any individual in the United States of America. Conceived in the early 1860s and first presented in 1863, the medal has a colorful and inspiring history which has culminated in the standards applied today for awarding this respected honor.
In their provisions for judging whether a man is entitled to the Medal of Honor, each of the armed services has set up regulations which permit no margin of doubt or error. The deed of the person must be proved by incontestable evidence of at least two eyewitnesses; it must be so outstanding that it clearly distinguishes his gallantry beyond the call of duty from lesser forms of bravery; it must involve the risk of his life; and it must be of the type of deed which, if he had not done it, would not subject him to any justified criticism.
A recommendation for a Navy Medal of Honor must be made within 3 years and awarded within 5 years. Much to his chagrin General Casey is aware that the Marines are a part of the Navy department." The crowd laughs.
"Acts of bravery and courage are not unusual among those in uniform. The fact that many members of the U.S. Armed Services have engaged in direct battle with an enemy or carried out their duties under enemy attack is taken as a sign of this bravery and courage. However, the level of heroism cited among those who receive the Medal of Honor is uncommonly high. The distinction of this type of valor, heroism, courage, and bravery, in an environment where bravery and courage are the norm—and must be the norm in order to carry out effective military operations—may prove difficult to recognize by the outsider.
The Medal of Honor is presented to its recipients by a high official in the name of the Congress of the United States. For this reason, it is sometimes called the Congressional Medal of Honor. As a general rule, the Medal of Honor can be earned—by a deed of personal bravery or self-sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty—only while a person is a member of the American Armed Services in actual combat with an enemy of the Nation.
This was the case, for example, during World Wars I and II and the Korean conflict. However, the Navy Medal of Honor could be and has been on several occasions, awarded to noncombatants. On a few, rare occasions, the Congress of the United States has awarded special Medals of Honor for individual exploits taking place in peacetime. Major General Casey is being honored for actions in both situations. In peace or war, this medal is the highest decoration which can be given in any of the Armed Services, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard. Out of many millions of those that have served our country, only 3,493 have received this recognition."
The President looks out on the assembled family and friends. He sees many uniforms. Many of them testified before congress as to the actions and behavior of the nominated awardee. " John Casey indeed stands out as one of a few good men. We all share the honor of having this man in our lives. Honor guard, present the awardee."
The band plays the Marine Corp Hymn and Captain James Kirk steps out in front of the assembly. "Honor Guard Atten-hut." At the back of the assemblage a loud snapping sound is heard as the honor guard comes to attention. The honor guard is a mix of Echo team and Marines and Master Chief Child, in full-dress blues. "Forward… march."
The honor guard, led by Master Chief Seely Booth, slowly marches forward, in the center of the two columns strides Major General John Casey. His face is glowing brighter than the brass buttons on his tunic. His white gloved left-hand rests on his saber as his right-hand swings with the cadence. His steely gaze is locked forward, this is not Grandpa John. This is a warrior about to receive acknowledgement from his peers and superiors for his bravery and accomplishments.
The procession reaches the front row of seats. Captain Kirk calls out "Company halt."
The two columns stop with a loud stomp and stand at attention. "Major General John Casey it is my honor to inform you that the President of the United States has ordered your presence in front of this assembly of friends and family. In addition to your loved ones, this ceremony will be witnessed by a small portion of the souls you have saved. With your permission Major General, Forward March."
Casey walks up to Captain Kirk who immediately snaps a hand salute. Casey returns the salute then offers his hand. "Glad you could make it Jim, thank you."
The former ship's captain drops his salute and takes Casey's hand, "It's my honor to be here Sir."
Casey smiles and steps back. "Captain you are dismissed, job well done."
Kirk salutes, Casey returns the salute. Kirk turns on his heel and walks away. Casey continues to the podium where he stops and salutes the president. Frank returns the salute and Casey turns to face the gathering. MJ and LJ yell out, "Grandpa, that's my grandpa." A roar of laughter goes up.
Frank laughs, "Yes boys, that's your grandpa and my friend. Alex, Morgan will you join us please?" They walk up and stand next to Casey. Sarah and Chuck hold the twins.
The President opens a small velvet covered box and shows it to the assembled viewers. He hands the box to Alex standing at Casey's side.
"To all gathered here to witness this presentation, Greetings. As the President of the United States, representing the people of these United States of America. As authorized by an act of Congress enacted March 3, 1863, I am awarding in the name of the Congress The Naval Medal of Honor to Major General John Casey for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action with the enemy.
Unfortunately, I cannot cite the time nor place of those classified actions. This in no way diminishes Major General Casey's service to his country and the world.
Mr. and Mrs. Grimes, General Casey's Daughter and son-in law will assist me in the awarding of his medal."
Alex holds the open box; Morgan removes the medal and hands it to The President.
As Frank puts the medal around Casey's neck. "On behalf of a grateful nation, thank you for your exemplary service."
Casey turns to show the assembled witnesses his award. The Naval version a five-pointed bronze star, tipped with trefoils (an ornamental design of three rounded lobes like a clover leaf containing a crown of laurel and oak). In the center is Minerva, (Roman goddess of wisdom, justice, law, victory, and the sponsor of arts, trade, and strategy), personifying the United States, standing with her left hand resting on fasces, (a bundle of rods with a projecting axe blade, carried by a lictor in ancient Rome as a symbol of a magistrate's power), and her right hand holding a shield emblazoned with the shield from the coat of arms of the United States. She repulses discord, (Ref: The discord of the Civil War) represented by snakes The medal is suspended from the flukes of an anchor. It is made of solid red brass, oxidized, and buffed.
The President steps back. "Major General Casey, Atten-hut." Casey stiffens and stares straight ahead. "Dismissed."
Casey relaxes and turns to Frank and offers his hand, "Thank you Sir. I'm honored to have served under you."
Frank shakes his hand, "The honor was all mine, John. Now go be with your family."
As Alex and Morgan hug Casey the assembled loved ones approach and the President speaks into the microphone. "I want to thank the members of the press for covering this ceremony. The rest of this afternoon is reserved for family. Our pages will help you find your way out. Thank you again for coming."
Sarah approaches Casey with MJ in her arms and hugs him hard. "I'm so proud of you." She taps the medal, "Honor is what John Casey is all about." MJ leans forward and hugs Casey. "I love you Grandpa." He smiles wide. "John, you know he's going to hug you, be good." Casey grunts.
Chuck having handed LJ off to Morgan, steps up as Sarah moves off. He throws his arms around Casey. Casey grunts. "I'm happy for you Buddy. You deserve this and so much more. I can't believe how lucky I am to have you as a friend. I'm sorry that Sarah and I need to leave to get ready."
Casey pats his back. "No problem Kid. I'll see you soon." Chuck steps away from Casey and a long line of people wait to congratulate him.
Out of the corner of his eye he catches sight of someone else. He walks over to him. "I'm glad you could make it." He gives him a hug. "Do you have a minute; I want you to meet someone important to me?" He nods.
Chuck walks over to Morgan. "Morgan, Pal, I want you to meet a friend of mine." Morgan waits quietly. "Morgan Grimes, I have been - and always shall be - your friend. This is Captain James T. Kirk; his friends call him Jim." Chuck laughs when Morgan's jaw drops. "I have to go find Sarah. Live long and prosper."
Chuck looks around and finds Sarah talking to Alex, now holding MJ.
"Hi Hon, you ready to go." Sarah nods as Chuck takes her hand. As they walk into the White House, "You know Sarah, you can still back out."
Sarah stops and stares into his eyes. "Are you having second thoughts Bartowski?"
Chuck looks shocked, "ME, never."
Sarah smiles, kisses him, and starts to walk again. "That's good. It would look bad if the groom walked down the aisle covered in bruises wearing cuffs. Now get go ready for me. I want all the ladies to be even more jealous than they are now."
A/N Okay, I hope I did this is okay. I figured most of you would rather have something then wait for all of it. I'm sorry it's so long, but there were so many things that needed to be sewn up. I wanted to be sure all of the principles were included. Every time I read through it for editing, I realized that I left someone out. It kept growing and growing. I'll be honest, I could keep writing this, but I forced myself to stop.
