A/N: Hello readers and welcome to chapter 1. In this chapter we'll see how Luz became the heroic witch Azura.
Narration
Magic. A supernatural power. Throughout the millennia magic has come in all forms. For some, magic is view as a gift from the gods to enrich one's life. To others, magic is view as nothing more than a curse. A blight to oneself and to those around them. But in truth, magic is an ability that comes with great responsibility. To know how and when to use one's power.
That is something that Luz Noceda learned at a very young age. When she was young, she suffered a great loss. This loss triggered her magical powers, but it also unleashed a terrible curse as well.
In Luz's Room
As we enter Luz's room, we see the six-year-old girl sitting on her bed crying her eyes out. Her father had died just recently, and it took its toll on the little girl. "Wah, it's not fair! Why did this have to happen?" Luz cried to herself. She had always been close to her dad; he had been the reason she got into reading; specifically fantasy stories.
And now he was gone. Luz was certain that this was the worst day of her life ever. But in the mist of her crying into her hands she felt something bright. 'Huh?' She thought. She then peeled her hands away from her face and was astounded by what she had seen. A mysterious pattern that glowed yellow appeared on her hands.
The pattern was a line stretches from the bottom of the spell circle to about two-thirds up. A perfectly horizontal line connects two sides of the circle, one-third up from the bottom of the circle. The ends of the horizontal line are connected to the top of the vertical line. Two slanted bars cut through the vertical line just above the horizontal line.
Curious about what this symbol means Luz tapped her palm and an orb of light sprouted from it. And being the avid lover of fantasy stories, she deduced that she had performed magic. "Oh, dios mío. I-I just did magic!" She says ecstatic by what she had just accomplished. She immediately got up from her bed and rush out of her room to show her mom.
"Mommy, mommy, mommy!" Luz yelled excitedly as ran into her mother's room. "Cálmate Luz. Now, tell me what's got you all excited." Her mother Camila tells her. "Look!" Luz says eagerly as she shows her mom the weird symbol on her hand. But while Luz was excited about it, Camila looked rather worried. "Luz, what is that?" Camila asks. "Well, I was in my room when suddenly this appeared in my hand. And check this out." Luz says as she taps the symbol on her hand, spewing a ball of light.
"Isn't it cool mom!?" Luz asks her mother with excitement. However, Camila did not share the same excitement about this as her daughter. "Luz, we need to get rid of that thing." Camila says. "What? Why?" Luz asks, not understanding. "That's not normal honey. Kids: people in general, shouldn't be able to do that." Camila explains. "B-But I can finally do magic, like the characters in my books." Luz says, not wanting to give up her new powers.
"Sorry Luz, but my mind is made up. We're going to the doctor tomorrow to get rid of this." Camila said with a finite tone. Luz couldn't understand why her mother was so against this. In Luz's mind she had finally found something that makes her unique and now her mother was threatening to take it away. "No!" Luz yelled at her mother. "I won't let you take this from me!" Luz says getting angry. "Luz, I told you my mind is made up." Camila says, not backing down.
"I. SAID. NO!" Luz yells as suddenly her body starts to go through a transformation. Her brown skin was transforming into jet black fur. Her hands and feet were turning into claws. She started to grow fangs in her mouth. Her brown hair to a midnight purple mane. Her eyes went from brown to golden with pitch black around them. Horn spewing from her head, and lastly she grew to eight feet.
"Dios mío." Camila exclaimed, completely shocked and mortified by her daughter's transformation. "Graar!" Beast Luz roared as it started to thrash around the room, nearly hitting Camila a few times. "Luz! You need to stop!" Camila says, trying to reach her daughter in her beastly state. Unfortunately, Beast Luz turned her attention towards Camila who began to slowly back away in fear as her daughter slowly trudged towards her.
Eventually Camila's back was against the wall. "Luz please, you need to stop." Camila pleaded as Beast Luz cornered her. Camila then closed her eyes and waited for the inevitable, but Beast Luz didn't attack. Seeing the genuine fear in her mother's caused Beast Luz to hesitate. In fact, she was starting to tremor. Camila opens her eyes and see her daughter struggling to control herself, even dropping to her knees.
Luz's body was suddenly turning back to normal, much to Camila's relief. "Oh, mi niña!" Camila says as she rushes over to Luz and embraces her. "Mamá? What's going on? Why is you're room a mess?" A now exhausted Luz asks. "It doesn't matter Luz. All that matters is that you're okay." Camila says while stroking Luz's hair, comforting her.
9 Years Later
Nine years have passed since that fateful day. When Camila had told Luz what she had did she was understandably upset and a bit ashamed of what she did. While Camila assured her daughter that she didn't blame her, she did forbid her to practice with her magic as she was sure that was the cause of her transformation. Luz didn't like that in the slightest but complied with her mother's wishes.
Over the next few years Luz tried her best to not use her magic as to not trigger another transformation. But because of her constant struggle to not trigger her transformation, Luz was distant from her peers, not making any friends. But she still had her interest in all things fantasy and that was good enough for Luz. Secretly however, Luz yearned to actual practice her magic, to actually have control, so that she could be just like the witches from her books.
And luckily for Luz, she would get her chance one day.
It was a regular Saturday and Luz was walking around town. She had already gone to the park and enjoyed the swing set for about fifteen minutes before leaving. Now she walks aimlessly, looking for something to pique her interest. And that's when she found it.
"The Owl House?" Luz says to herself as looks at the store. From what Luz could tell it was an thrift store, and apparently the owner had a love from owls as owl decorations were all over the shop. Seeing as she had nothing better to do Luz decides to enter the store. As she enters the store, she sees an owl 'hooting' in a cage on a shelf over on the right. She walks over to the cage, places her hand in between the bars and gently pets the owl who appreciates the affection.
"You know, you're quite cute for an owl." Luz tells the winged creature. "He's not for sale if that's what you're thinking." A voice calls out. Now startled, Luz turns around and spots a woman who appears to be in her early 40's. She wore a sleeveless, two-tone maroon dress with a ripped hem design and gray leggings, as well as maroon high-heeled boots. She also had orange hair with a couple of grey hairs as well.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know he was your pet." Luz quickly apologized. "Eh, don't worry about it kid. Besides, it looks like Owlbert likes you." The lady says nonchalantly. "Anyway, welcome to... The Owl House!" The woman says in an overzealous way. "Feel free to look around to find something you like." The woman adds.
Luz nods as she begins to look around the store. As for the lady, she kept observing Luz, watching her every movement. 'There's something about that girl.' The woman thought. Luz continued to wander around the store until her eyes spotted something of interest. It was a book of spell. "Woah." Luz quietly exclaimed. "Ah, I see you're interested in magic." The woman says. Luz's interest then turned into sadness remembering that she can't use her magic.
The woman picks up on Luz's sadness and ask, "You okay kid?" "It's just... Do you believe in magic?" Luz asks the woman. "Ha, of course I believe. I've seen it." The lady tells Luz. "Although, this spell book is outdated by a decade or two." She then says. "What makes you say that?" Luz asks, her mood improving. "Let's just say I'm an expert.
"Eda!" A voice calls out. Both Luz and 'Eda look over towards the counter to see a canine-like creature standing there. He has mostly dark gray fur, although his belly and the tip of his tail are covered in purplish-gray fur. The highlight of his appearance is a dog-like skull with white horns on his head, one of which is broken. He has pink eyes with yellow sclera. He has three fingers and two toes that (excluding his thumbs) look like white claws.
"Where did you put my rubber duck? I need it for my bath." The dog like creature complained. "Ugh, King, how many times have I told you not to come out when I have customers?" The lady named 'Eda' ask rhetorically and snarky. "Dios mío! Tu tan lindo!" Luz exclaims in Spanish as she rushes over to 'King', picks him up and envelops him into a tight hug and giving him kisses on his cheek. "Who's a cute little guy, who's a cute little guy~" Luz coos. "I don't know who your little guy is; Eda get her away from me." King says as he struggles to get out of Luz's grasp.
"So, what exactly are you little guy?" Luz asks as she puts him down. "I am a ferocious demon, in fact, I'm the king of demons." King boasted. "Woah." Luz exclaims. She then hears Eda sigh behind her. "Looks like the cat is out of the bag." Eda says a bit annoyed. "What do you mean?" Luz asks, not sure what she meant. "It's better if I show you." Eda says. She then walks over to Owlbert's cage and lets him out. Owlbert then begins to transform into a staff, much to Luz's shock.
"Oh my gosh, you're a... a..." Luz says shocked, struggling to find the words. "A witch? You bet I am." Eda boast. "Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh! This is amazing! Witches are real!" Luz says exhilarated. "Calm down kid, you're going to pop a bold vein." Eda tells her. "Sorry, sorry. It's just I've read stories about witches, and I always thought they were cool." Luz states. "Well, I'm glad you think so." Eda replies.
Just then, an idea popped into Luz's head. "Hey Eda, may I ask you something?" Luz says. "What is it kid?" Eda asks. Before Luz said anything she first showed her hands. At first Eda (and King for that matter) were confused, until Luz's hands began to glow with that weird symbol again. "Woah." Both Eda and King exclaimed shocked by this. "When I was young, I found out I could do magic, but my mom prevented me from using it." Luz explains. "Why would she do that?" Asked King.
"It's also because when I discovered my magic, I also found out it came with a curse. I turn into a nasty beast, and I lose control of myself." Luz explains. Upon hearing her story Eda felt an instant connection to Luz. She felt as if she was looking in a mirror and saw her younger self. "Let me guess, you want me to teach you how to control your magic." Eda guesses. Luz nods her head in response. "Hmm, well, your magic is definitely different from normal witches. But similar enough for me to teach you." Eda states. "Alright, Luz the human. I will teach you all I know about magic, as long as you work here for me." Eda offers.
"Yes! I accept! I can't believe it; I'm finally going to learn magic!" Luz exclaimed excitedly as she wraps Eda in a hug. While Eda didn't like Luz hugging her, but she let it slide just this one time.
A year later
A year had passed since Luz met Eda. And to Luz it was the greatest thing that ever happened to her. When Eda first started to teach Luz, she decided to get to the bottom of Luz curse. Luz was hesitant but Eda assured her that she wouldn't hurt her or anyone else. With a bit of trial and error, they discovered the trigger to Luz's transformation was when she angry or stressed out. Once they discovered the problem Luz took the necessary steps to make sure she wouldn't transform.
After that it was on to the magic lessons. Eda explained in order to do magic one must first think of what they wanted to do then create a spell circle, thus casting the spell. Of course, due to Luz magic being a bit different she had to do it a bit different. Instead of creating a spell circle Luz just concentrated and the mysterious symbol would appear in her hand.
With more and more practice Luz learn how to alter the size of the symbol, increasing the power of the spell. Luz also learned that she could do more than one symbol pattern. Aside from having a light spell she also had a fire spell, ice spell and plant spell.
The fire spell symbol was a larger circle at the bottom of the spell circle with a dot in the center. On top is a smaller circle with a curved triangle on top. Another curved triangle is also included on top of the bigger circle, which goes over the smaller circle.
The ice spell symbol takes the shape of a kite with a line down its center, sat on a horizontal line across the lower third of the circle. A curved line from the two center points on either side of the kite curves through it in a bow shape.
And lastly the plant symbol resembles a flower. Inside the spell circle is a small circle with a dot at its center, near but not touching the bottom of the spell circle. There are two short lines stretching from the top of the smaller circle facing out at 45º angles. A triangle is roughly opposite the small circle, with one vertex facing the smaller circle. A line stretches from the triangle's tip to the circle. There is a horizontal line across the middle of the triangle.
Luz started to affectionately refer to her symbols as glyphs and had become quite skilled in using them. Although Eda was adamant that Luz only used her magic in emergencies, stating that not everyone will understand her powers. Luz still didn't like the idea of hiding her magic but decided to comply. But one day she'd get her chance to show what she could do.
One day, Luz was on her way to the Owl House for work when suddenly...
"Help!... Help!" A voice cries out for help. "Sound like someone's in trouble." Luz notes to herself. "What should I do?" She then questions. "Should I call the cops? No, that'll take too long." Luz says while trying to decide her best course of action.
Then another idea popped into her mind. "Wait, I could use my magic to help whoever is in danger." She says to herself. "Oh, but Eda said not to use my magic in public." She then remembers. Then a third idea popped into her head. "But what if no one knows it me?" She ponders. She reaches into her backpack and takes out a midnight purple masquerade mask she made during art class last spring.
She also takes out an emerald-colored wig she used for her halloween costume last year. "Guess these will have to do." Luz says. She puts on the mask and wig and sprinted towards the cry for help. She eventually found where the sound came from, it was in a back alley. In it was a woman being attacked by two men. The woman was struggling to get out of the two men's grasp, but she eventually got pinned against the wall.
Upon seeing this Luz gets immediately disgusted and angered. "Hey, leave her alone!" Luz yells with all of her courage. The two men stop what they're doing and look at Luz before they start to laugh. "Haha, last time I check Halloween was during fall not summer, so what are you doing kid?" One man asked. "To stop you from harassing this woman." Luz stated, still feeling confident.
The two men started to laugh again, but this time they began to walk towards Luz. It was now Luz realized how bigger than her they were, shaking her confidence a little. "Really, and how are you going to stop us?" The second man asks. Luz was now a bit scared, but she knew she couldn't back down now. "How about you find out." Luz challenged. Both men's faces went from an arrogant smirk to a vicious scowl as Luz didn't back down. "Fine kind, have it your way." The man on Luz's right says as throws a punch Luz.
On instinct, Luz raised both her in an attempt to block the punch, but as she did two light glyphs spawned in her hand, casting a light barrier around her, blocking the punch. "What the?" Both men say in confusion upon witnessing Luz magic. Luz herself was a bit surprised of how spontaneous she activated her magic. But her confusion quickly turned into confidence. "Oh yeah, you guys are in for it now." Luz says cockily.
Luz then conjures an ice glyph in left hand and a plant glyph in her right hand. She then uses the ice glyph to make her left hand into an icy fist which she uses to knock out the man on the left with one punch. She then used the plant glyph to shoot out vines that wrapped around the man on the right, restraining him. "Ha, score one for Luz." Luz mutters to herself.
"Are you alright miss?" Luz asks the lady who was being harassed. "I-I'm fine." She replied with a pant. "How did you do that?" She then asks. "Just a little parlor trick." Luz replies with a smirk. "Anyway, stay safe." Luz tells her before rushing out of the alley. Once a far enough distance away Luz stopped running. "I can't... Believe... I just did that." Luz says in between breaths. "That. Was. Awesome!" Luz exclaims excitedly.
"I was a hero. Just like the good witch Azura!" Luz says as her eyes gleamed. "Hmm, and if I can save one person then maybe I can save more people. Yeah, I can use my magic to help people!" Luz says to herself, loving this new idea. "I have to tell Eda." Luz then says as she rushes off to the Owl House.
Later
We now transition to inside the Owl House where Luz is recapping to Eda and King what she had just did and what she wanted to do. "I'm sorry, you want to what?!" Eda questions, thinking Luz was acting crazy. "I said I wanted to be a hero." Luz reiterates to Eda. "Look kid, just because you got lucky once doesn't mean you can fight crime." Eda states. "Hey, it wasn't luck at all. It was pure skill." Luz defended as she folded her arms.
"Just because you've gotten better with your magic doesn't mean you're invincible. What if there's a situation where you can't use your magic?" Eda proposed. "She has a point." Commented King. "I... Actually, haven't thought about that." Luz reluctantly admits. "Exactly. Plus, your mom still doesn't know that I've been teaching you to control your magic. If you go through with this, it will only draw attention to yourself, and not just from your mom." Eda points out.
"I actually do have a plan for that. I can where a disguise. Any cool superhero has a cool costume anyway." Luz replies. "All I'm saying kid is that this is dangerous. And I don't want to be held responsible if something happens." Eda says. "If there's one thing Eda hates it's responsibility." King says. "C'mon Eda, this is my chance to do some good in the world. Not only that, but to prove that my magic wasn't a curse. but a gift." Luz pleads while giving Eda a puppy dog eyed look.
"Ugh, fine." Eda says caving into Luz wish. "I'll let you do it. But you have to promise you won't get yourself into too much trouble." Eda tells Luz. "I promise." Luz replies. "Good. Now before you can get out there, you'll need a few things." Eda says as she gets up and heads into another room, leaving a confused Luz. "King? Do you know what Eda is doing?" She asks the little demon. "Not a clue. Eda can be a mystery sometimes." King replies shaking his head.
A moment later Eda returned into the room, and she was holding a piece of wood. "Uh, Eda? Why are you carrying a piece of wood?" Luz asks, feeling curious. "This isn't any ordinary piece of wood. This is pailstorm wood." Eda tells Luz. "Pailstorm wood?" Luz says. "Yeah, the wood needed to carve pailsman." King explains. "Wait!? I'm getting my own pailsman?!" Luz asks in both excitement and disbelief.
"And some fighting lessons. That's the only way I'm letting you do this superhero nonsense." Eda tells Luz. "Eeee!" Luz squeals in exhilaration, excited to get her own pailsman.
Two weeks later
The next two weeks for Luz was spent in preparation to become an effective hero. Eda taught her a little she knew about fighting. While it wasn't any martial arts, Luz learned some tricks that would be useful in a fight.
As for Luz's pailsman, Luz carved the pailstorm wood into the shape of an egg. When Eda and King asked why Luz told them that thanks to them, she finally got to choose who she wanted to be. Now, she wants her pailsman to choose what it wants to be as well. And after a few days of sunbathing under a lamp the egg finally hatched, revealing it to be a snake shifter which Luz named Stringbean. Not only could Stringbean fire powerful energy blasts but she could also shapeshift into anything she wanted.
After that, all that was left for Luz was to design her costume. Luz decided to take inspiration from her favorite book: The Good Witch Azura series, while also adding in some personal touches. Eventually, the day came for Luz to start her superhero career.
"Eda! King! Get in here!" Luz calls out for her mentor and favorite demon. A few moments later Eda and King enter the room. "Yesh kid, I know you're excited, but do you need to yell-" Eda stops mid-sentence as she sees Luz in her costume. Luz was wearing a witch's outfit consisting of a midnight purple sweater with flared half sleeves surmounted by a black yoke decorated with a yellow star over a purple long-sleeved dress with a black long skirt. Under the skirt, she wears black leggings and black boots. A midnight purple masquerade mask on her face. On her head, she wears a floppy, black, pointed, broad-brimmed hat surrounded by a gold coronet. And lastly, a green wig over her hair.
"So, what do you think?" Luz asked in a sing-song tone. "Well, it certainly works for you." Eda admits. "Not as colorful as I pictured." King says. "Yeah, well, as much as I admire Azura I decided to make a costume that said me while still paying tribute." Luz states. "That real mature of you Luz." Eda says as Stringbean flys over to Luz and nuzzles her cheek. "Looks like Stringbean like your costume too." Eda says with a chuckle.
"So, whaddya say Eda, am I ready or what?" Luz asks with a hopeful smirk. "Actually, you still need one more thing." Eda tells her. "Ugh." Luz groaned. "What is it now?" She asked impatiently. "You need... A superhero name." Eda says dramatically. "Huh?" Luz says confused. "Yeah, every hero has a name. And if you're going to be one then you will too." King states. "Good point. Hmm... I got it. I will be... Luzura!" Luz announced.
"Luzura?" Both King and Eda questioned. "Yeah, I'm taking inspiration from Azura but I'm still Luz. So, Luz + Azura= Luzura." Luz explains. "I guess that will do." Eda says with a playful eye roll. "Alright kid, that's everything. You can go now. Just make sure you be back by eight." Eda instructs. "And make sure you kick plenty of butt." King said chaotically.
"I will you two. See you in a few hours." Luz tells them. "Let's go Stringbean." Luz tells her pailsman. Stringbean hiss in response and transforms into a staff. Luz gets on the staff and proceeds to fly out of the window.
'Luzura' flew through the sky looking for any sign of trouble to be thwarted. "Hmm, if I was a criminal where would I be?" Luzura wondered. She continued to fly through the city when suddenly she hears... "Help?" A voice shouted. "Someone needs my help." Luzura says, as she flys towards the cry for help, soon finding out the sound came from a corner store. A young boy was getting jumped by three older men.
Luzura race towards them, landing in between the boy and the three men. "You will not harm this boy any longer." Luzura states to the men who were bewildered by her sudden appearance. "And who the heck are you supposed to be?" The man to Luzura's right questioned. "I am the heroic witch Luzura, warrior of peace." Luzura announced with a righteous smile. However, all three men were not impressed.
"Is that supposed to scare us?" The man on the left asks, not intimidated at all. "Look kid, either beat it or else." The man in the middle threatens. Knowing that there was no turning back now Luzura got into a fight stance with her staff in her right hand and leading with her left foot. Seeing this, all three men rushed at Luzura, each throwing wild punches at her. But thanks to her training with Eda, Luzura manage to dodge out of the way of all their punches. She even managed to jab one of them in the back with her staff.
Now annoyed, the three men tried to rush at Luzura again. But this time she used her staff to create an ice glyph, pointing it to the ground she turned their path into a icy slope, causing them to slip and fall. She then used her staff to create a plant glyph to entrap them all in vines. Luzura then walked over to the three men who looked bewildered by her magic. "And let that be a lesson, you won't be able to harm the defenseless as long as I'm around." She tells them before walking over to the young boy.
"You alright?" She asks him. "Y-Yeah. Thank you for saving me." He says gratefully. "How'd you do that?" He then asks. "Simple. Because I am the heroic witch Luzura." She replies with a bit of dramatic flair. "Now make sure to stay out of trouble." Luzura tells him as she tips her hat to him. She then gets on her staff and begins to fly off.
"Not too shabby for my first night if I do say so myself." Luzura boast to herself. But she didn't get to celebrate for long. "Wait a minute." Luzura mutters to herself. *Sniff* *Sniff* "Why do I smell smoke?" She questioned. She then looked off into the distance and saw an apartment building on fire.
"Oh my gosh, that building is on fire!" Luzura exclaims shocked. She quickly rushes over to building. Upon arriving she overhears one of the firefighters say, "There's still people trapped on the fourth floor." With now time to waste Luz flies into the fourth floor of the apartment building.
As she enters, she's immediately surrounded by flames. "I'm so glad mamá isn't here to see my do this." Luzura says in relief, knowing her mother would kill her for doing something so dangerous. Luzura then uses her staff to create a big ice glyph, which she uses to blow an icy breeze throughout the floor, stopping the flames instantly. "That takes care of the fire at least." Luzura states.
She then begins traversing the hall looking for anyone trapped. "Is anyone there? I'm here to help, say something so I can help!" Luzura calls out. "Hello? In here!" A voice shouts. 'That's close by.' Luzura thinks. She rushes to the apartment near the end of the hallway. She uses Stringbean to blast open the door. After that she spots a woman underneath some rubble. "Ma'am, are you alright?" Luzura asked with concern. "Yes, but this is too heavy for me to lift." The woman answers. "Don't worry, I'll get you out." Luzura assures her.
Luzura then uses multiple plant glyphs to help her lift the debris of the innocent woman. Once she lifted the debris high enough, she grabbed the woman and pulled her out. "There, you're safe now." Luzura tells the woman. "Thank you, but who are you?" She asks. "Call me Luzura. Now, let's get you out of here." She replies as she takes out her staff and flys herself and the woman out of the building. Luzura drops her off in front of the firefighters before continuing to fly off into the night, as the people below look on in awe.
A/N: And that's it for chapter 1. Now before I go, I have some things I want to explain. Luz's beast form is based off her titan form, it's just an incomplete version of it. As for her witch outfit, it's based off Azura, but I change the color pallet to more match Luz's personality. Lastly, I gave her Stringbean to begin with is because Luz is more honest about what she wants than in the show. Her main goal is to control her beast form and to not be viewed as a monster. Anyway, that's all for now, see you guys in chapter 2.
