Chapter 12
The boy was checking on Davina, who was still unconscious from falling and hitting her head, while Caroline and Klaus watched from the doorway.
"We should get her to a hospital." Caroline told Klaus.
Klaus reluctantly handed her the white oak stake along with the keys to the SUV.
"Okay, let's do it. Go get the car, love."
After she had left, Klaus went to face the boy again, "You know, ever since the meetings with my mother I was wondering when you might make an appearance, Kol."
"Well, the jig is up, I guess." Kol smiled.
"Hello, brother." Klaus said as he seemed happy to see Kol. "It's not that I begrudge you hitching a ride back to the land of the living. It's just that you're making all the wrong friends, brother. And, I have half a mind to show you how wrong you are."
"But you're not going to do that, are you? Because your little blonde friend, Caroline, wouldn't like it. I'm curious, does she take one of those little baggies out when she takes you for a walk?"
Annoyed, Klaus raised his voice so Caroline would hear. "Caroline? It's Kol, I'm going to kill him, now."
When there was no response to that revelation, Klaus got suspicious and went to see where she was. He walked to the driveway, where he found the driver's side door of his SUV open. Klaus rushed around to the trunk, which was open and empty. Klaus realized that Mikael took Caroline.
It was daylight now, and Klaus was feeding on the bodies of the recently dead partiers to replenish his strength. Suddenly, his cell phone rang.
"Uh, I'm a tad busy. What is it, Marcel?"
"Something has happened to Elijah. He was supposed to be our decoy last night, and now he's vanished. There's blood everywhere- werewolf and vampire. There's a trail. I need your help."
"Well, as much as I might like to help you find my brother, I have more pressing matters as the moment. Davina had Mikael on a magical leash, and it broke. Now Mikael has the death star, the white oak stake and Caroline. I have to get her back. That's more important right now. And, if you do find my brother, please, tell him I could do with a hand!"
Then he killed the last of the hillbillies and hung up.
Klaus was still wandering around the outskirts of the Bayou, looking for Caroline and Mikael. He heard Caroline's screaming in the nearby abandoned building. He saw a shovel nearby and broke it in half before entering the building, where Mikael was holding Caroline at stake-point. Caroline had been heavily beaten and was swaying on her feet. Klaus became furious and pointed his handmade stake at Mikael threateningly.
"You're gonna pay for hurting her."
"Aw, how sweet. The cur whines for its bitch." Mikael said as he looked at Klaus and then Caroline before throwing her on the floor where she quickly flashed next to Klaus. Klaus put one had in front of her as if trying to protect her from whatever Mikael was planning to do next.
Klaus and Mikael fought and Klaus broke the stake out of Mikael's grip and went to stake him, but Mikael threw the death star at Caroline, although Caroline was quick to catch it, it caused enough distraction for Mikael, giving him the opportunity he needed to steal the stake back.
They kept fighting and suddenly Caroline screamed in horror as Mikael found a way to stab Klaus with the white oak stake. Mikael stared at Klaus' body, but become concerned when nothing happened. Caroline cried in shock.
Unbeknownst to Mikael, Davina, motivated to save her friends who were sired by Klaus, had arrived with Kol and they did some spell to keep Klaus alive.
Mikael went to confront Davina while Caroline went to pull the stake out, which she finally did.
Mikael rushed back, "What do you think you're doing.?"
"Stay the hell away from us! Or, I swear to God, I'll kill you myself." Caroline screamed at him. By then Marcel also arrived and, and Klaus, determined, jumped to his feet. Marcel rushed over to him, and they're eventually joined by Davina. They all stood in tableau and smirked at him, knowing that they finally had the upper-hand.
"It's over, Mikael. You're outnumbered. Are you going to beg for your miserable life?" Klaus told Mikael.
"You think having people makes you strong? It proves how weak you are. Come find me when you don't have fools, women and children fighting your battles." And then he flashed away and Klaus turned to face Caroline, pulling her to his embrace and sighing in relief.
Inside, Klaus was looking at Caroline's wounds, which were already healing. Caroline touched Klaus' stab wound that hadn't healed yet.
"So much of me toughening up. All these lessons with Rebekah, I didn't feel they helped me today." Caroline told Klaus.
"You're kidding, right? You did great. You went up against my father who even I'm scared of."
"It was the least I could do for telling you not to kill that bastard the first chance you had."
"Well, he hurt you. For that alone, I will kill him."
After a pause, Caroline asked Klaus with her voice trembling in fear, "Klaus, those locals Mikael used against you, what did you do with them?"
Klaus fell silent at that and just stared down.
Caroline searched his face as she kept asking, "Klaus?"
Klaus turned away from her in frustration before turning to face her again, yelling at her, "You know what I am. You started a relationship with me knowing what I am! Every war has casualties, Caroline!"
Tears streamed down her face as she realised he was right. "So that makes it okay?"
"No, It doesn't, love." He edged closer to her, "For you I would save every living creature but it's not who I am. I'm a monster with everyone except you. You know that."
Caroline didn't have a chance to respond as Marcel came in. "I checked the perimeter, and he's definitely gone. But Klaus, we have another problem."
When Caroline and Klaus got back to the compound, Caroline told him, "This place is too big for just the two of us."
"We'll get him back. I promise."
"I know."
Although it was still daylight outside, Caroline decided to go get some sleep and Klaus wanted to join her but she pushed him away.
"Klaus, let me be alone. If you want to sleep, there are like 100 bedrooms in this building."
"What's with this behaviour. What's wrong?"
"Nothing, I just need to think." Caroline said as she lied down on the bed.
"About?"
"You and I."
"Klaus sat down on the bed next to her and put his hand on her arm, rubbing it soothingly."
"What is there to think about, about you and me, love?"
"Everything."
At first Klaus didn't understand her but then he remembered their earlier conversation and he sighed in frustration. "Back to that, are we?"
"Yes."
"Okay, you think about it and when you do, you better focus on how I'm with you, not how I am with everyone else. Because Caroline, whatever you decide, you and I are now bound and you are not going anywhere."
He left the room, pushing the door shut with a bang, making her jump a little.
The next morning, Caroline was looking out in the street on their balcony and after screaming had stopped, she frownedand returned inside, following the noise to their bedroom, where Klaus had blood splattered all over his hands and face and was washing up in his sink.
"You're done? Okay, let's get going!" Caroline said to Klaus.
Klaus shook his head as he walked toward her to face her.
"Esther is too powerful. She won't be easily found. I need to draw her out."
He was about to shut the sliding doors that separate their room his study when Caroline stopped him, "Wait! What are you doing?"
"I'm going to change my shirt, and then I'm going to find my brother."
He was about to shut the doors again when Caroline stopped him again, "Since when are you shy in front of me?"
"I'm not, I just want privacy to think on my own, just like you did yesterday."
"Let me come with you, Klaus!"
Klaus sighed and stepped forward few steps toward her and said, "I know you want to help, Caroline, but you can't. My mother is wretched. She will target you in order to thwart me, and I can't very well save Elijah if I'm busy saving you, can I?"
He talked to her like she was a child which she was compered to him, but it still annoyed her.
"Stop patronizing me and talking to me like I was a child, Klaus."
Klaus sighed again, "You want to be respected like a grown up, then act like one. You told me that night you would be mature about us, but yesterday you regressed back to your high school days."
"Klaus.." she said, hurt evident in her voice.
Klaus felt sorry for her at that moment. He hated hurting her but that's the grave she had dug herself by whining about things he couldn't control any more than she could.
"I'm sorry, Caroline but you are staying put and that's the end of it."
"You are doing it again." She complained.
"Yes, I am." He said as he was finally able to pull the doors shut.
Caroline rolled her eyes, contemplating what to do now.
So she decided to help Elijah on her own, going to Marcel and teaming up with him. While Klaus went to talk to his mother still possessing the witch Lenore, Caroline had a little pow wow with Marcel and she learned that not only Esther and Kol were back, in other bodies, but also Klaus' brother Finn was back, something Klaus had known for days and hadn't mentioned to her. She was so pissed off. So when Camille called Marcel that her new advisor is a witch by the name of Vincent Griffiths, they figured out that it was actually Finn in that body and they could use Finn to locate Elijah. So when Camille was happy to help, they set out to trap Finn.
The plan was for Finn and Camille to go out on a date, for Caroline to bite Camille so Finn would think that her life was in danger and then draw him to the St. Ann's church where they would trap him with spelled manacles – a dark object from Camille's collection.
But the plan backfired as Finn and Esther were again two steps ahead of them and it was Caroline who got trapped as Finn dragged her to the tomb they were keeping Elijah in.
When Caroline came to and discovered where she was, she called out for Elijah but he didn't answer her.
"He can't answer you, dear,"
That was Esther in Lenore's body.
"He is in excruciating agony and you will be too soon."
"What have to done to him, you bitch?" Caroline asked Esther.
"I'm purifying him, of his sins, so he can start a new life."
"He and I, we don't want to habitat some witches' bodies or any bodies that aren't our own. You know, Klaus is coming for us and you are just going to lose. Taking me, that's just gonna fuel him more."
"Oh, I have no doubt that it will, that has been the idea all along. You, my dear, may not be alive to see it."
"What?" Caroline asked in shock. "I thought-"
"I reconsidered what I want to do with you. I don't think you are good enough for my son when he gets into a new body."
"Why?"
"You have to ask? You, who have found every way to reject him for years, now want to be with him, when he's becoming the man he's suppose to become all along. No, I have a more mature woman picked for him who is very similar to you."
"Camille," she realised. Sighing, she asked, "What are you going to do to her?"
"Nothing, that's the beauty of it, he will be mortal, she already is a mortal. They are perfect for each other."
"You are insane, INSANE," she said to Esther as she suddenly screamed in pain and her nose began to bleed.
When Klaus got a call from Marcel about what happened to Caroline, he dropped everything he had going on with Esther which was never really going anywhere and seething in rage, he went to Marcel's loft.
"What the bloody hell, Marcel, is wrong with you, may I ask? Why would you let her do this?"
"Look, I don't want to get between the two of you, looks like there is trouble in paradise as she was so pissed off when she learned you didn't tell her about Finn. It was a well thought out plan-"
"Why, why, Marcellus, didn't you call me first?"
"Because she told me not to."
"And since when is your allegiance to her and not me?" Klaus yelled at him.
"Look, I understand you are angry-"
Klaus lost his temper as he started throwing things around and breaking them.
"You, Marcel, are going to help me get them back by doing everything I say."
"Yeah, of course," was all he could say.
So Klaus had figured out they were hidden in the cemetery, so they went to search there. And suddenly, fighting the wolves under Esther's control, Klaus came face to face with his biological father. After a much heated discussion, Klaus' father revealed he knew where Esther was keeping the prisoners he had come searching for.
"Well, don't keep us in suspense, where are they?" Klaus asked.
Klaus' werewolf father showed him the tomb in question and then disappeared.
Klaus and Marcel found them both unconscious.
"You get Elijah, I'll take Caroline."
When Caroline come due she didn't find Klaus anywhere in sight. Finally she found Elijah in his own room, still unconscious, while Klaus was found in his study.
"Klaus…," she began, knowing that he must be really pissed off and she didn't have a lot of experience dealing with him when his rage was directed at her.
He didn't even look at her, just stared at his whiskey glass.
"I'm sorry, I was pissed off that you didn't tell me about Finn-"
"Why would I be obligated to tell you anything involving my siblings and my family?" He retorted.
"Don't do this, Klaus."
"DO WHAT`?" He yelled at her.
"Act like I don't matter."
"I act like it, because YOU DON*T! Not when it comes to my family, Rebekah, Elijah… Hope!"
"That's a low blow, Klaus."
"Why? It's the truth, you don't care about me and you definitely don't respect me, so YOU MEAN NOTHING TO ME!"
Caroline was now in tears, when she ran out of the house. She went straight to Camille's, hoping she would take her in which she did and Caroline spent most of the night crying on Camille's sofa.
Klaus not feeling an ounce of guilt , focused on healing Elijah. There was a spell needed to be done and thanks to Marcel's convincing, Davina agreed to do it. But when Elijah woke up to find out what had happened, he was so mad at Klaus, he also left him. He went straight to Camille's and when he knocked on the door, Caroline was the one to answer, as Camille was at work.
Her eyes were still puff from all the crying she had done and Elijah expressed how sorry he was.
"My brother can be such an animal when he wants to be, without any sign of empathy. I'm sorry, Caroline, I know how you feel."
"Thanks Elijah, come in." then after Elijah didn't move a muscle, she realised what was wrong, "Oh sorry, right, I can't invite you in. Let's go out then."
"Alright, where do you want to go?" Elijah asked her with a smile.
"I don't know, how about Rousseau's? Like there's another option in this town." She laughed.
Elijah just smiled as she took her jacket and came out of the apartment. When they walked side by side out of the building, Elijah put his hand at the small of her back, as a way to offer his support to her.
When they got Rousseau's, it was packed and Camille didn't have time to chat much.
So Caroline and Elijah were alone.
"Please forgive my brother."
"Why? "
"Because he's having a tough a life as it is and he actually cares about you."
"Maybe he once did, but not anymore, he made it very clear that you, Rebekah and Hope rank above me. Hope I get, but I thought we were closer than that. I guess I was wrong."
"Maybe. Anyway, Marcel told me what you three did to save me and I'm very thankful to you."
"Couldn't very well let you rot in there."
"Why not?"
"Cause I care about you, like your brother does."
"Is that all, Miss Forbes?" He asked as he inched closer to her. Caroline felt his breath on her and knew she shouldn't do it but she did it anyway. She pulled Elijah closer and kissed him passionately. Camille looked on being very shocked to see it. He secretly took a picture of it, asked to take the rest of the night off and went to see Klaus.
When Elijah had recovered from the initial shock, he led her outside first human speed and then outside in vampire flash. They continued kissing when Caroline suddenly stopped. "Elijah, stop, I can't do it, I can't do it to Klaus. It would break his heart, me being with his closest brother." So they both stopped everything and Caroline went back to Camille's and Elijah went back to his loft where he had stayed the past few weeks.
When Klaus saw the picture, he broke the phone to pieces with his bare hand.
"Hey, my phone!"
Seething in absolute rage, he didn't say anything to her.
But when she started to leave, he blocked her way just before the gate, his eyes dark.
"Klaus I know you must be really overwhelmed right now, but don't take it out on me, okay."
"I'm not," was all he said as he closed the distance between them, pinned her to the nearest wall and started kissing her and tearing clothes off of her.
"Tell me to stop and I stop, Camille." He whispered in her ear. Part of her wanted to say it, to scream it, actually, but she had wanted him for so long, she didn't know if she would get another chance. SO she didn't say anything, just wrapped her hands around his neck, pulling him closer and he knew that that they were on the same page about what was gonna happen next.
So this happened. It's heartbreaking but after that it can only go upwards, right?
