After the feast was over, the first thing that happened was we led by a very small man to a tower.
"Attention, everyone. I am Filius Flitwick, Charms professor and the head of Ravenclaw house." He stated. "And to answer the question that I assume some of you are going to ask, the reason I am so small is because I am part goblin."
I wasn't going to ask that. Did that mean that all of the little people in the world were part goblin? That didn't seem likely. He then explained to us how to get into the Ravenclaw common room which was to answer a riddle from a talking painting. A lot of this would take some time to get used to.
"Now I am going to start by introducing you to your Prefects: Sabrina and Viola Hastings." He declared.
I looked ahead at the pair of sisters. They looked to be about 17. I wasn't entirely sure what a prefect was. Both of them were brunettes but they were not identical. I still wasn't sure which was which though, but I assumed that was something that I would learn with time. It would probably take me some time to learn everyone's names, especially since I hadn't really conversed with any of them.
"We will now be taking our new students to their rooms." One of the sisters replies. "We will list off a group of names and those of you who are mentioned will follow us. Your group will be your roommates whom you will be spending the term together and possibly your entire tenure at Hogwarts.
I started to listen for my name to be called.
"Mandelina Brocklehurst, Sue Lee, Amelia Michele, Hailey Potter and Natalie Redford." The other sister replied. I knew I had to follow behind her and met up with Mandy and the group of girls.
"So which one are you: Sabrina or Viola?" Mandy asked.
"I am Viola." The teenager replied. "You girls are going to love it here in Ravenclaw. All of your belongings have already been moved to your room."
Part of me wondered how Ronnie was doing, but it was probably unlikely that I wouldn't see her again. More likely than not I would be able to talk to her tomorrow.
This would my first time sharing a room with anyone, though it would really be my first time actually having a room. My "room" at the Dursleys' was more of a closet than anything else. I imagined I would like the space and so far Hogwarts looked like it had quite a bit of space.
Once we headed to the room, the five of us headed to our beds, which seemed to be pre-selected for us. Mine had my trunk and Hedwig next to it.
"So maybe we should get to know each other better." Mandy suggested. "We can go around the room and say where we are from. I'll go first. I'm Mandy and I'm from Reading."
I was pretty sure that I didn't know where that was. I hadn't gotten to travel much and there were so many places that I hadn't been to.
"I'll go next. I'm Natalie." The brunette replied. I was a little bit surprised when she talked to be honest. I didn't know that there were non-British people here. "Yes, I am from America. Tennessee, which I'm pretty sure none of you know where that is. I moved here two years ago."
I supposed that made more sense. Still I was surprised that an American was at Hogwarts. Maybe she would be able to teach me about the country.
"I will be next." The other blonde, Amelia replied. She was also not British. "My name is Amelia Michele and I am from Paris."
"I'm Sue and I'm from London." The Asian girl replied.
"It seems like everyone already knows who I am." I stated.
"I don't know who you are." Natalie declared.
"She's the only one to ever survive an attack from You Know Who." Sue answered. Did people really call him that?
"And who is You Know Who?" Natalie asked. Sue and Amelia looked at each other like they didn't want to say the name. I still didn't understand why no one liked to say his name. As far as I was aware, Germans still said Hitler's name.
"Lord Voldemort." Mandy declared as Sue and Amelia gasped. "I'm not afraid of him and besides everyone knows that he's dead."
Hagrid hadn't told me that he was dead, but it made sense considering that no one really considered him a threat anymore.
So as it turned out, the first class that we had was with Professor Snape. Being around her made me feel kind of nervous. She had a stern look on her face that I wasn't sure what to make of. The other thing that I learned was that the classes were separated by houses. We were going to be spending the class with Slytherin.
"Attention everyone." She replied. "Welcome to Potions class. Potions are very important to magic as they can be used for thousands of different purposes. You will be learning some of them in this class. You also should not expect me to go easy on you simply because you are First-Years. I hold all of my students to the same standard regardless of your age. Some of you may find them especially high. Now begin your lesson."
So one thing that I learned was that we were supposed to use our wands to stir the potions. Hopefully none of the substances that we were mixing would cause them to be damaged or destroyed. Suddenly there was an explosion and I looked over to Sue whose cauldron had burst.
"And that is what happens when you don't follow the instructions." The teacher replied. "I must say that I expected better from a Ravenclaw. As a result of your impatience, I will be taking ten points from your house."
I still didn't quite understand how the points thing worked, but I could see a number of frowns as the professor said that.
The rest of the classes were mildly interesting, but we didn't really do anything worth talking about. One of the professors was literally a ghost. Yeah, there were ghosts are Hogwarts for some reason. Again, people just seemed to think that this was normal. It would probably take me a while to understand the magical community because so far it seemed pretty odd and that wasn't even including the fact that a lot of people treated me like a god.
On Saturday, however, we were going to be doing much more interesting. Apparently all of the first-years were going to be meeting outside for some sorting of flying class. So to answer my earlier question, witches didn't always walk everyone. They also sometimes flew on brooms.
"I wonder if we're going to learn how to play Quidditch." Ronnie declared. Quidditch was apparently the one and only sport that wizards and witches played. I didn't really understand it. I also didn't understand why wizards wouldn't want to play football or cricket. Did they think that it was too simple or something?
Like I said, pretty much all of the first-years were there, including Malfoy. Never in my life had I met someone that I pretty much despised from the moment that I met them. She just seemed to be vile. It was like she reveled in being evil or at least a bitch.
At that point, the professor, a woman with spiky gray hair came out.
"Good morning, everyone, I am Madam Hooch and I will be teaching you lot how to fly." She said. "The first that you will learn is how to call your broom. You simply hold your hand out and call 'UP!'."
At that point, everyone shouted 'UP!' and to my surprise all of the brooms lifted. Fortunately I had been ready for it. One girl ended up getting hit in the face with hers. I was pretty sure that her name was Nelly. She was the one who lost the toad. I was beginning to wonder if the girl was just unlucky.
I had to admit that the idea of flying intrigued me. Would it be exhilarating or would it be scary? Would it be a little bit of both. I imagined that it would probably be kind of scary at first, but it also had the potential to be fun. Perhaps I could learn to love the customs of the magical community, even though they were vastly different from the ones that I grew up with. Plus, I wouldn't have to deal with the Dursleys anymore and I would probably go to Antarctica if it meant getting away from them. Maybe the school would even give me the chance to get to learn more about my mums because they talked about them. What I needed to focus on now though was learning how to fly.
Except we weren't going to be doing that today. Since it was the first day, we were only supposed to mount our brooms, as in sit on them, not fly on them. To be honest, it was pretty boring. I imagined that we were supposed to go slow to avoid any sort of crashes, but it going so slow that we weren't doing anything didn't seem like the way to go at either. At least Snape had us doing things on the first day despite her condescension and totally unpleasant demeanor she seemed like she enjoyed teaching.
Things ended up getting out of hand however when Malfoy decided to hurl some insults my way. One thing ended up leading to another and suddenly I was flying. I didn't have the best control over the broom and suddenly I thought maybe it was a good idea to start slow so we could learn how to control things better. However, I started to get the hang of it quickly and soon I was flying. Of course one thing on my mind was the fact that I might get into trouble. That was amplified when I pretty much crashed into a building and saw Professor McGonagall at the window.
So finally another update. I had the chapter about half done but couldn't figure out how to continue it. So Natalie is played by Lucy Hale and Amelia is played by Adele Exarchopoulos. Please don't forget to review.
