Authors note: Hello~ I had this idea when I was browsing through Pinterest, seeing a large amount of giant humans art. That and with Elden Rings giants, Malenia being quite large, and other small stories/animes and ideas; I birthed this little one shot. I hope you all enjoy, ands if ya do leave a favorite or review.
Chp 15: To be giant, is to be Arc. And to be an Arc?
"Person or creature speaking."
'Person or creature thinking.'
The sounds of quiet conversations bounced lightly through the train car, families and travelers talking amongst themselves or to others that would talk back. It was quiet, idyllic, something out of a movie. Kids bounced happily in their seats as the train entered a tunnel, gasping at the quick grasp of darkness before smiling when they exited the tunnel into sunlight. Trees passed in a flurry, each small bump causing drinks to spill small droplets, or a small stumble from someone walking through the cars. One older man, black hair thinning and starting to gray huffs a little, "Couldn't they make this ride a little smoother? These bumps are getting out of hand."
The woman next to him, presumably his wife, shakes her head. "Now Ashe, you know that this is one of the smoothest rides into Vale. You're just complaining that you spilled your coffee a little bit ago. And we should be thankful...With what we'll be passing in a minute, its astounding its this smooth to begin with." The man grumbled a little more, a young boy tilting his head in confusion as what he just heard. He turns to his mother, a young women with a gentle smile as she taps away at her scroll.
"Mama? What does she mean?" The woman hums, looking at her son and opening her mouth to speak. She's cut off when the train enters another tunnel and the intercom in the car blairs to life. "Hello all travelers. We of, Vale Continental Rails, thank you for choosing us for your traveling needs. We hope you've had a pleasant trip and will recommend us to all your friends and family. We do apologize for the interruption but we would like the newest riders to look to the immediate left as we exit the tunnel."
As soon as the intercom shuts off, the train is bathed in light; the young boy listening to the voice and looking just past his mother. He gasps in shock, others in the train mimcing him or even cursing. "Holy..." A teenager gasps, the view taking their breath away. Large rocky mountains covered in trees and life jutted far into the sky. It was picturesque but the crown of the view was a large canyon of jagged rock beginning from a small valley and into the mountains where the canyon seemingly swallowed the mountain range and split it into 2. Flames escaped from the mouth of the canyon, acting like some portal to deep pits below. The ground around the canyon steamed heavily, but somehow life prevailed and flowers grew and bloomed bright red petals. "That...is Arc Gulch. Or that's what we called it in my day." The young man turns around, seeing another older man staring out the window. He had a weary look to his wizened face, heavy wrinkles and age spots upon his skin. Heavy burns covers his hands and arms, old and scarred over with time. The sight of his scars makes some of the passengers shiver, the young boy not shying from the interesting old man. "Why was it called that?"
"It must be name that due to its shape?" A woman remarks, the older man frowning. "No." He voice comes out low and grating. He clenches his hands, eyes seemingly staring into nothing. "It got its name from the family who created it. One woman, with a single swipe of her sword; tore the earth asunder and made the world bow." Some of the passengers scoff, mostly the younger generation. Though the older generation stiffens a little at the name Arc, some of them whispering some small prayers. The scared man mutters something, the younger boy tilting his head. "Who are the Arcs?"
"An old wives tale from the Great War. There's no way 1 family decimated all the kingdoms without suffering a single fatality. Propaganda." The scarred man turns to the one who said that, opening his mouth to say something when he freezes. The sight of the man freezing make the other passengers blink, turning and following his eyes. "Oh my..." One woman mutters, eyes a plenty widening at the sight. There, coming from the car behind him was a massive person. So tall, they literally had to bend down to their knees, and shuffle through the train cars door. They were shrouded in a large cloak that covered all their features, looking like more of a tall imposing specter. Once through the door, the figure stands up and accidentally hits their head.
The others in the train car wince at the loud crack, the tall figure rubbing their head and whining. Once they were done rubbing their head, the figure looks up; cloak covering their face and eyes completely. They jump a little, shuffling forward a little and waving. "Oh! Apologies. The trains not really made for people of my height."
"I don't think anything is made for your height." A guy mutters, the cloaked figure moving forward to continue on their way. The scarred old man was still frozen in place, eyes never leaving the tall cloaked figure. As the figure moved through the train car, they apologized profusely. "Excuse me."
"Sorry."
"Pardon me."
And with what was probably 3 steps, the imposing figure made it to the other side of the train car and began to go through the door. Just before they could go through the door, the scarred man speaks. "Are you an Arc?" The figure stills at the name, never turning around but speaking softly. "Who?"
With that said, the figure finally gets through the door. With that, the train car is silent and even when the intercom pipes up again, nothing was said.
"I wonder what else is big..."
Except for that one girl who had an incredibly interested face.
The cloaked figure shuffles nervously side to side, slouching forward to make themselves look smaller. Though to the outside per viewer that only made their extreme height more apparent as even slouched the stood heads taller than all others. Underneath the cloak, hands shuffle around various pockets, looking for something. With a visible shake, the cloaked figure stands up and pulls something into view. It looked like some kind of intricate badge, the cloaked figure staring down at the badge as their memory returns when they received the badge from a dear uncle. The mans smooth and yet country voice echoes in his head.
"Listen here kid, if your moms or sisters find out about this, don't mention that I was the one who told you where to go. Say you found it on my desk or something. They'll turn me into hamburger than bring me back just so they could turn me into prime rib. Got it?"
In the present, the cloaked figure nods as if agreeing with their past selves even more. They clutch the badge, standing up and moving through the streets toward...They stop and try to remember something.
"What about your dad? He'll just beat me within an inch of my life before hiding me from your mothers. Now when you get to Vale, go to a place called Juniors Night club. When you get there, show them this badge and they'll take care of you until the initiation of Beacon starts. I'll let them know of your arrival and don't worry about anything. Junior owes me a few favors, so you'll be taken care of. If they don't believe you, tell them this sequence of numbers and they'll move the city for ya. Capiche?"
The cloaked figure weaves between some light poles, ignoring the stunned looks of the locals as he dwarfs all under him. His memory drifts more towards his conversation with his uncle, narrowly avoiding being crushed my a truck.
"Now...while Vale is definitely safer than most of the other kingdoms, it's not so safe that you can go into 'lalala' land for a daily stroll. Keep an eye on everything around you and be ready for anything. With your height, you'll stop most attacks but no-one ever said common criminals are smart. So keep you weapons ready and your aura up. That and keep an eye on the women. I swear if I get killed because you let some woman take you to her bed, I'll be proud and mad. Just...be careful alright? If something happens, just give me a call and I'll be there within a day. And don't worry if things don't work out. I can get you a good position at Black Iron and I'm sure your sisters would happily have you work for them. Now...Let's get you back home before a foot crushes me..."
The figure seems to shake in anger at their memory, stopping suddenly. They think for a few seconds before slumping over. They never got the address from their uncle! That and if its truly a nightclub, it wouldn't be open midday. That means they had a number of hours before the nightclub opened. With a sigh, the cloaked figure looks around for something to occupy their time. They stand a little straighter when they see a small outlet mall, various people mulling about and shopping between the shops.
With a shrug, they decide to at least look around and buy some things. With a happy little jerk, they move into the outlet mall. The citizens of Vale city would later post in their social medias of some giant being shopping in the middle of Vale.
Our cloaked figure hums happily, newest purchases stored underneath their cloak; happily following the directions given by a nice lady in one of the shops they visited. Though they swear, the lady was drooling when they bent down to look at something. With a bounce to their step, said bounce nearly making them hit a light pole; they turned the corner of the darkening streets and sees the Juniors in the distance. A few people waited in line to get in, but the night was just beginning so it wasn't much. As they get closer, the bouncers at the door see them coming and stiffen. They bring the badge into view as they get closer, one of the bouncers moving a hand into their vest. The other stops them, motioning for our cloaked giant to walk forward. As they got closer, the small conversations of those standing in line stopped; the bouncers looking nervous as they finally see the true height of the cloaked figure.
Our cloaked giant shows the badge, the bouncers looking at it and stiffening. The bouncer to the left brought his hand up to his ear, quietly speaking into what could only be a communicator. After a few seconds, the bouncer nods and turns to our main character. "Apologies sir. Please forgive us for stopping you." They relax a little when they get a small wave of 'it's ok'. "The boss says that he'll be down to see you soon. Please enjoy some drinks at the bar. On the house." With a head nod, our giant bends down so they could fit through the entrance.
Inside the nightclub
The sound of loud music makes his ears throb painfully, but he presses on through the increasing crows in the club. Most move out of his way once they see his height, those that don't are quickly moved out of the way by others around them. The bar gets closer with each step, the bartender looking oddly nervous as they get closer and closer. Once they reach the bar, the bartender takes a breath. "What would you like?" The bartender waits with held breath. What could the giant order? Blood? The entire bar? Him on a frying pan, seared with butter and served with potatoes?! Maybe that last one was the hunger talking...
The cloaked figure hums, a surprisingly soft noise and nods. "Can you make an 'Alice in Wonderland'?" The bartender blinks a little, mind searching for the recipe. "Non-alcoholic or?" The giant nods at the non-alcoholic, the bartender moving to make the drink with haste. Within a few minutes, the light pink drink is sat in front of them of the giant. Our cloaked character grabs it, happily taking sips of the sweet drink. The bartender lets out a breathe of relief, happy to know he wasn't going to be eaten or thrown through the nearest wall.
A few minutes pass, the bartender enjoying the silence from the cloaked giant, hoping someone would come soon. His prayers are answered when 2 feminine voices echoe between the music and other voices, both similar and yet slightly distinctive.
Our cloaked figure turns to where the bartender was looking, blinking when a pair of young women walk towards them. One was wearing a bright white dress, her partner wearing a matching yet opposite red dress. Large claws are found on ones hand and the others feet, glowing teal eyes glancing around. Their faces were eerily similar, most likely twins by our giants thoughts. "Ugh...Do you know who we're supposed to come and grab? And why couldn't Uncle come down and do it?" The white twin was moaning about something, the red twin shaking her head.
"Uncle said we'd know them when we see them. Other than that, I have no clue. I just hope they're worth...it." The red twin trailed off when her eyes met the giants tall figure. She went stock silent, her sister raising a well painted eyebrow and following her sisters gaze. She too froze, both having to look up to the point their necks started to hurt. It was like looking up at a skyscraper, the figures height seemingly never stopping. The red haired twin was stuttering, finger coming up and pointing at our giant. "Are...are you the one we're looking for?" The giant gives a hesitant nod, the white twin taking a breath. "I'm Melanie Malachite and this-" She motions to her twin. "-is Miltia Malachite. We were told to come and find someone who would..stand out." The giant gives a sheepish look towards them, bright blue eyes staring at them from the hood. "Follow us...and please don't step on anybody." Miltias comment makes Melanie give her sister a small glare, but with a twirl; they start walking away with the giant following in behind.
With large steps, the 3 of them make their way towards a spiral staircase that led to an office looming over the dance floor. Melanie and Miltia climb the stairs at a sedate pace, each of them looking back to watch the large fellow following them. The figure was skipping 5 steps with each gait, cloak still hiding their body from view almost perfectly. Within a minute, they reach their destination and with a flourish, the twins open a door leading to a furnished office. "Go inside, Uncle is waiting for you." The giant nods, bending to their knees to enter the room. Shuffling into the room, the cloaked giant stands to their feet and looks around. A figure was sitting at a desk, eyes staring at him from behind a pair of red glasses. The door closes, the figure sighing. "Kid...I hope you know what you're doing cause if this goes south...We're all fucked. Take off the cloak. You're safe here." With a nod, the cloaked giant removes the hood and bright blond hair graces the darkened office and the figure behind the desk snickers. "Definitely remind me of your mothers, yes you do. Though I can definitely see marks of your old man. Sit down, we've got some paperwork to do."
The blonde hair nods, sitting down and with a sigh, the 2 start filling out paperwork.
Beacon academy. Night before initiation.
The quiet hallways of Beacon academy had a chill to them, the sound of heels clakking making some wonder who was up. A tall blonde haired woman turns a corner, green bespectacled eyes looking tired and slightly red. Were quickly fixed. She had a riding crop in one hand, sighing to herself. "Of all the things Ozpin wants, why does he want me to meet him in the garden?" She shakes her head, memory reminding her of the scroll call she received minutes ago. Something about a prospective student coming in and that they needed to meet them. Questions immediately spring into her mind as to why this student didn't arrive with the others. With a shake of her head, she exits the hallway and enters what many called the Beacon gardens.
Well manicured grass swayed in a light wind, bloomed flowers had retreated their petals as the night had come. Some bushes lined the cement walk that leads to a group of benches and a small fountain. Trees grew high into the sky, giving shade in the day and dark as the abyss spots in the night. Standing in the moonlight, Headmaster Ozpin was facing a group of trees and silently sipping a steaming mug of coffee. He was seemingly speaking into the air, the man turning and giving her a smile. "Ah Glynda! A beautiful night, is it not?" The now named blonde woman gives a sigh and looks to the sky. "It is headmaster. But you didn't call me to talk about the night sky." Headmaster Ozpin smiles a little, sipping his coffee.
"Yes. That is true. I called you here to introduce you to a...special student who wishes to attend here." His eyes glance to the darkness, finding something that causes him to smile. Glynda looks into the darkness, and sees nothing. "Why did this student not arrive with the others?" At that, Ozpin looks up into the sky and sighs.
"Glynda? Do you know the power of names? What fortune and misfortune could ones name bring to the holder?" At the question, she frowns and thinks. "The power of names can be greater than the strongest fighter. One name can bring forth a war or settle an entire kingdom into peace. Ones name can bring great fortune and misfortune by simply having it. Ones name can be considered a guillotine above their necks or a pillar to stand upon. Why the question?" Ozpin nods his head in agreement of her answer and takes another sip of his coffee.
"We have some famous names attending this year. The young Ms. Schnee. The missing princess of Menagerie, Ms. Belladonna. Household names such as Rose, Xiao Long, Winchester, and even Ms. Nikos is a famous name now attending our academy." Glynda raises an eyebrow at the headmaster. "We are considered the best of the huntsman academies sir. It makes sense for the more...recognizable names to attend what is considered the best academy." Ozpin nods and gives a smile. "And yet...This is one particular name that has never attended our academy."
That made Glynda pause, mind trying to place a famous name that had never attended Beacon. After a few seconds, her mind lands on the only name possible and her body freezes. Emotions run through her mind, thoughts of only destruction coming into the forefront. "Ozpin...You don't mean..." Ozpin just smiles turning to the darkness he was previously talking to.
"Mr. Arc? Can you please come out here please?"
Glynda turns to the darkness, heart hammering in her chest as something moves in the inky black. A tall figure moves into view, height dwarfing her own. A cloak covers the figures body, and with some soft steps; the figure moves into view. Tall...Taller than even the now 2nd year Yatsunashi, messy blonde hair swayed in the wind. Serene blue eyes stare at her with a great deal of nervousness and a tad bit of fear. A boyish face twitches lightly, a face that had rarely seen any combat nor scars. The cloak hid the boys body, but it moved as he was nervously wringing his hands. With a gulp, the boy waves. "Hello..." His voice was quiet, meeker than one would think with his height.
Glynda stares at the taller teenager, mind that was once filled with hellish images and fights was quickly being wiped with confusion. This...was an Arc? She was lucky enough to only ever see places where the Arcs had been and fought. She had only seen Arcs from a GREAT distance and wasn't ashamed to say that her parents warnings about the Arcs had instilled a deep fear of the family. But looking at the teenager in front of her...She could only see a shy, shuffling, blonde haired teenager that many would call 'cute'. The only difference was his immense height and even that was only adding to his cute factor.
"Glynda. I'd like you meet Jaune Arc. He's a hopeful young man, who's taken quite a gamble to come here. I believe introducing him to you would be...a way to calm the coming morning once his presence is seen by the other students." He takes a sip of his coffee, smiling sadly. "As you said, ones name can be a guillotine over ones neck. Even if the one holding the name never did anything to deserve the animosity." Glynda doesn't say anything, simply staring at the young man. She...would be teaching an Arc. She turns to Ozpin, narrowing her eyes.
"Headmaster...I do hope you know what you're doing. Once the council finds out about this...or the other academies..." Ozpin simply sips from his mug, hand reaching into a pocket and retrieving a handful of candy. He hands the candy to the toweing Jaune, the young man smiling int thanks and quickly starting to snack on the sweets. With a sigh, Glynda walks closer to Mr. Arc, quietly speaking to the towering boy. In the back of her mind, she just knew that the coming day was going to be headache in a half.
The next morning
A yawn escapes a young womans throat, her sluggish form stumbling past other sleeping possible students. She trips over a stray arm, apologizing when the owner gives them an angry grumble and makes her way towards her destination. Bleary silver eyes stare in annoyance at the sunlight peeking through the windows. With a grumble, she moves to towards the bathrrom, bladder yelling at her to relieve themselves.
Once she finished her business, she washed her hands and exited the bathrrom. With her business done, her mind had woken up a little bit, sniffing the air slightly when it detects the scent of frshly cooked food. Her stomach grumbles a little, mind quickly filling with the images of freshly cooked breakfast. With a delirious smile, she follows her nose and walks the empty halls of Beacon. She barely remembers the way she went, mind and body still partially clouded by sleep but the smell was getting closer. She gets closer and closer, smiling wider and some drool escaping her mouth. She enters a large room, mind supplying that it was a caferteria and the source of the delicious smell.
Her eyes catch someone else sitting in the room, quickly walking to the other person. "Hey! What's for breakfast?" Her mind was slowly becoming faster, her eyes catching that whoever she was next to was GIANT! Her silver eyes widen a little, and she rubs them a little; catching the flash of blonde hair as the figure pulls a large cloak over their head. Her staring must've made the giant annoyed, as it shuffles a little and starts to look around. "Holy cookie! You're...!"
"Ms. Rose! What are you doing here? Breakfast doesn't start for another hour." The voice makes the young Ruby Rose jolt in surprise and fear, head whipping around towards the voice. The stern faced Miss Goodwitch gives the young girl a glare, moving forward with her heels clacking. "Miss Goodwitch! I-I-I...!" Ruby stutters, shrinking back when the teacher starts to reprimand her.
"No excuses young lady! While I can understand ones willingness to follow their sense of smell in the early morning, you should've returned to the auditorium after you were done with...whatever you were doing. Now stand to your feet and follow me. I'll escort you back to the sleeping quarters."
Ruby scrambles to her feet, not wanting to mess up before initiation. She follows Miss Goodwitch, minding reminding her of the giant figure still sitting at the table. She turns, seeing the black cloak the figure was wearing fluttering around a corner, the delicious smell following. She wondered who it was. Maybe an older student or teacher? She doesn't get her answer, a purple hue covering her body and Ruby finds herself being floated back to the her sleeping bag. She'd wonder who that was while she waited for her older sister to wake up from whatever dream she was having. Her sister had an awful large amount of drool escaping her mouth.
With Ms. Goodwitch
With a sigh, the stern disciplinarian returns to the cafeteria. When she entered the room, she stifles a small smile when the large cloaked stops eating, turning slowly towards her. "You're fine Mr. Arc. Continue your breakfast in peace. No-one should bother us for the next few hours." The towering teenager gives a slow nod, continuing to eat his small plate of food. Ms. Goodwitch gives a worried glance at the plate, opening her mouth to speak before stopping herself. She simply nods, returning to her watch as the morning sun enters through the windows. Jaune simply looks up as a sunbeam enters the cafeteria, mind racing through the possibilities of the day to come. He was nervous...
Pyrrha Nikos marches through the dense foliage of Emerald forest, her green eyes darting to every small noise. She was tense, muscles ready for any grimm that would rear its ygly head. She gives a mental sigh, already wondering if coming to Beacon was the best choice for her. She wanted to escape the fame of her name. She wanted the chance to make friends as Pyrrha Nikos, the girl from Argus. Not Pyrrha Nikos, the Four time champion of the Mistralian tournament circuit. Maybe even find some love if she was lucky.
She ducks under a low hanging branch, stopping when her senses pick up something odd. The forest around her...was quiet. That in itself was odd. Nature is normally full of noise, sometimes so much noise it could overwhelm. But few things could make a forest go quiet... She narrows her eyes, bringing her weapon to bare against whatever came her way. Nothing happened after a minute, Pyrrha straining her ears with aura to hear anything beyond her natural hearing range. She hears nothing which made her more nervous, glancing around slowly.
She never sees the large hand stretch towards her, the hand covered in a set of heavily padded gloves. The hand lands of her shoulder, Pyrrha letting out a shriek. Her weapon was spinning within a second, darting away from whatever touched her and stabbing forward. She watches as whatever touched her ducks under her stab, the cloak covering the thing being ripped away. She deploys her shield, slamming it towards the thing and to her surprise; the thing stopped it could with a five fingered hand. Her eyes quickly dart towards a surprised set of...
...the prettiest set of blue eyes she had ever seen in her life. A soft boyish face is framed by the eyes, skin glowing lightly in the sun. Blond hair swayed like golden wheat, a nervous frown marring his face. He was wearing a large black cloak, the darkness beneath it so deep she couldn't see past it. The hood had been ripped by her spear, Pyrrha feeling sorry for that.
"I'm...sorry for startling you but-" At the voice, Pyrrha jolts a little. "I'm sorry!" Her quick shout makes the boy wince and shrink back a little, Pyrrha feeling her heart sink a little when the blue eyes dim a little. "Are...are you okay? Are you a student?" Her question makes the blonde hair teen nod, standing up and Pyrrha letting out another small eep. She was tall...taller when in heels...But the one in front of her...
His eyes glance back at her, blue eyes staring deeply into her own green. He gives a shy smile, dimples glowing slightly. "I'm...Jaune. I'm an initiate as well..." That brings Pyrrha back to her senses, mind rewinding to the launchpads. She couldn't remember seeing someone of such height. "O-o-o-oh..." She finds her composure, giving a gentle smile towards her...giant, cute partner.
"Well then...Hello Jaune. My name is Pyrrha. It's nice to meet you. I hope we can get along" Jaune gives a smile, the 2 moving towards their destination; Pyrrha never the wiser to the crushed dissolving corpses of grimm just behind where Jaune had come from. Nor was she looking at the ground...never seeing the twisting swirling shadows following Jaune. She thinks this was going to be an interesting year.
