Makoto Nanaya here,'' Makoto wrote on a small holographic keyboard displayed from her PeT, the Beastkin wearing an orange shirt and blue jeans with an acorn print on the right buttcheek pocket, ''I have been in this world for…three months now. From the first month on, I've been helping my honorary little sisters Maylu and Roll deal with a lot of issues caused by a combination of parental neglect, plain ol' bad luck, and a few other factors. I'm rather stunned that Lan has a therapist on speed dial after ranting at Dr. Hikari. Go Mrs. Hikari.'' she looked up at Maylu, who was doing small stretches in a red shirt and black track shorts with pink lines going up the sides with her PeT on her shoulder using a strap, ''Once the last bits of Maylu's malnourishment were gone, I swapped her recovery diet with the Nanaya Family meal plan. If Ma were here, she'd be so proud of her rate of recovery and improvement…and I'd have to convince her and Pa to not go out and find her birth parents and rip them a new one.'' She paused in her typing to look at Maylu, "Ya ready?"

"Ready!" Maylu replied as she finished her last stretch.

"Okay! Three laps around the park!" Makoto called before starting her timer, "And…Go!" She went back to her PeT, ''What gets me is how quickly she's gotten to the meal plan. Normally, it takes months before signs are obvious in non-Nanaya girls her age, but she got them barely a month into the food. Probably from her malnourishment as she neared puberty? I'll have to ask Kajun when I find a Cauldron. The trust exercises went great and managed to convince the Docs to let her keep the chair…after having to pay nearly my whole bank account and do experiments with bringing stuff in and out of the Network for a week. That chair has been a major blessing in letting them improve on their cooperation and trust in one another. Though I don't think either has fully forgiven me for the training I've been putting them through…especially with the Clothes Incident.'' She paused to shudder, remembering the look she got from the two that day, ''Yeah, I am so gonna get paid back for that.''

"Makoto!" The Beastkin looked up from her diary entry to see Lan skating over.

"Hey, Lan!" Makoto greeted, saving her entry and pocketing her PeT, "What's up?"

"I'm looking for Maylu," Lan replied, "Have ya seen her?"

"Yeah. She's doing a few laps around the park," Makoto replied.

"Huh? Why's she doing that?" Lan asked, tilting his head.

"She asked me to help her train," Makoto replied, "So I'm having her do a few laps after some stretches today. What are you wanting with her?"

"I was wondering if she wanted to go to a waterpark that opened," Lan replied.

"A waterpark?"

"Yeah. It's supposed to be a big one, too!" Lan beamed.

"Huh…Been a while since I went to one," Makoto noted to herself before checking her bank account, "...Yeah. We've got enough. Sure thing. Just stay here beside me and she'll be coming soon enough."

"Ok!" Lan nodded.

'Huh…I haven't really talked much with Lan since I started living with Maylu and Roll…and we're neighbors for cryin' out loud,' Makoto thought, "So…What is CrossFusion like?"

"Huh? CrossFusion? Heh-heh. It feels kinda tingly when it activates at first, like you're being tickled. Then…there's a rush," Lan explained, "Like you could do anything! But…you also feel your NetNavi at the same time. You feel what they feel, they feel what you feel…" he put a hand to his chest as he closed his eyes, "You're one person with someone helping you out in your mind and soul."

"Huh…That sounds pretty deep," Makoto noted.

"I trust in Lan just like he trusts in me. We may argue at times, yes, but we know the stakes and we'll always give it all we've got," Megaman added.

"So trust in one another is a really big deal for this power, huh?"

"Yeah. If you argue with each other in CrossFusion, it becomes unstable and we're actually a lot weaker," Lan replied, sheepishly rubbing the back of his head.

"It happens at times, but we always try to settle things," Megaman noted, sheepishly scratching his cheek.

"Huh…" Makoto nodded, "So…how's your mom's cooking?"

"It's heaven and if anyone tries to mess with it, I will rip their CyberCore out and crush it in their face," Megaman stated, his face completely serious, before smiling, "Except Roll. We like sharing our lunches at school."

"Aw~ Now that's adorable," Makoto cooed.

"H-Huh?"

"Well, you're best friends and are sharing lunches together. Do ya sit beside one another?"

"Well, yeah. But what does that have to do with being adorable?"

"Oh nothing~" Makoto replied in amusement, "So aside from that, I've noticed some weird stuff. Why are there weird shapes in some stuff while others have those red dots you send Mega and Roll into?"

"The Jack-In Ports?" Lan asked, "The weird ones you're talking about are probably the old ones before infrared became a thing."

"Lan actually made the first wireless Jack-In device that Papa and Mr. Famous based the latest PeTs on," Megaman smiled.

"Really? Well, we got a future inventor here, don't we?" Makoto grinned, patting his head.

"Hey~!" Lan whined, moving back and messing with his hair.

Makoto giggled at his reaction before adopting a thinking look, "Say…I've been reading up on the Dimensional Areas and how you normally get into them if they form when you're not in. Have you ever thought of making a pair of skate attachments to boost at it?"

"A boost?" Lan repeated as he tilted his head in thought.

"Yeah, like a hidden motor to get you fast enough to go through while CrossFusing!"

"Oh! That sounds so cool!" Lan awed, "Oh! I could add flame decals on them to tell them apart from my normal skates! Or maybe make the wheels a different color!"

"Nice!" Makoto grinned, "Oh! I've also been curious about BattleChips. Is it possible to make your own custom ones?"

"Oh yeah. You could make ones on your attacks or even yourself," Lan replied as he held up a BattleChip showing Roll attacking with her antennae, "Maylu and Roll made this for us."

"Really? Neat!" Makoto grinned, "So how does it work?"

"You're doing great, Maylu!" Roll cheered, "You haven't had to pause once to catch your breath and it's the last lap of the run!"

"My chest doesn't feel like it's on fire, either," Maylu noted as she kept her jogging going, "We should really get something for her after all this is done."

"Mm-hmm!" Roll nodded, "Aside from finding one of those Cauldrons, what would be a good idea for a gift?"

"We know she likes acorns and chestnut parfaits. Gym equipment would probably be a bad idea. She lifts everything so easily," Maylu replied.

"...Oh! Maybe something handmade!"

"Great idea!" Maylu grinned, "Maybe a locket and we put a small device in it for photos you gather up?"

"Thanks to all the Virus Busting she's been having us do, we do have a bit more Zenny now to buy supplies," Roll agreed, "I'll get looking into ordering a tiny photo screen!"

"Right! Mmm…maybe some air-drying clay and some paints…" Maylu noted before looking ahead, "Huh?" up ahead, she saw Lan and Makoto talking, "Lan?" she ran up, "Lan!"

"Huh?" the two looked up and Makoto quickly hit stop on her timer.

"Oh there you are!" Lan beamed, "Hey, Maylu, do you wanna go to that new waterpark today?"

"A waterpark?" Maylu asked, "Well…i-it has been a while since I last went to one." she looked at Makoto, who gave a thumbs up, "Sure, Lan!"

"Great! I'll meet you in an hour at the monorail station!" Lan beamed as he ran off, "Bye, Maylu, Makoto!"

"What was that about?" Maylu asked once Lan left.

"Oh, I was just talking with Lan about CrossFusion, BattleChips, and a whole lotta stuff," Makoto replied, "Mainly teased Mega about Roll. So~ sharing lunches, eh? That's so romantic!"

"Wh-What?!" Roll squeaked as she blushed.

"You've been sharing lunches?" Maylu asked with a giggle.

"M-Maylu~!" Roll whined.

"Right! Okay, girls, enough of the teasing of our sister…for now…"

"Mmmm~!"

"...Now we have an important thing to do: swimsuits," Makoto informed, making Maylu squeak and pale.

"I forgot I sold them…" Maylu whispered.

"Huh?! You so-no, no. Wait," Makoto shook her head, "I can probably guess why you did. Right. We've got an hour to get swimsuits and get to the metroline."

"That's not enough time!" Maylu groaned, facepalming.

"Ugh…If it were the beach, I'd offer some Golden Angel to you," Makoto sighed.

"Golden Angel?" Maylu repeated.

"I keep some in my tail," Makoto explained as she pulled out a vial with a golden gel in it with a sticker of golden angel wings surrounded by a halo, "This stuff, when you apply it onto your body, transforms into a swimsuit you imagine it to be."

"Really?" Maylu asked.

"Yep! But…it only works for saltwater. Freshwater and the stuff dissolves," Makoto explained, grimacing, "So yeah…better to get a real one for the waterpark."

"R-Right…" Maylu frowned as she looked at the vial.

"...Curious on the outfit?" Makoto asked, earning a nod, "Well…maybe after the trip to the waterpark, we can see what it makes. But for now…off to window shop!"

"Okay…One last check. Swimsuit?"

"Check," Lan replied, a large bag over his shoulder.

"Sunscreen?"

"Check."

"Money?"

"It's all with you."

"Towel?"

"Got it."

"SynchroChip?"

"Never leave home without it," Lan replied, holding up a metallic blue BattleChip with a green gem.

"Alright," Megaman nodded, "...Hey, Lan, what do you think of Makoto?"

"Hm? She seems pretty nice and Maylu seems to really look up to her," Lan replied.

"She does seem that way," Megaman agreed, "She even helped me finally eat Mama's cooking. I've always wanted to try it."

"I still can't believe how bad the food is in the Network!" Lan stuck his tongue out.

"How do you think Roll and I feel?! We've been robbed all these years without even realizing it!" Megaman complained, "No wonder Rush was so gosh dang greedy with the stuff!"

"Makoto said she was working with SciLab on getting better food in the Network," Lan recalled the earlier chat at the park, "So maybe soon we won't need to rely on Rush."

"But it won't be Mama's cooking," Megaman frowned.

"Well maybe you and Roll can learn how to cook for each other," Lan suggested.

"...You think so?"

"Yeah! I mean, you're friends, right? Why not make some meals for each other when the food tastes good in the Network?" Lan asked.

"Huh…" Megaman pondered.

"Hi boys~!" Makoto's voice called as she and Maylu walked up, both dressed normally, "Sorry if we kept you waiting!"

"Huh…You were almost late," Megaman noted, looking at the time.

"Hey…Us girls have to look our best wherever we go," Makoto winked.

"We're ready to go and I can't wait!" Maylu smiled.

"Great!" Lan cheered.

"This is gonna be so much fun!" Makoto cheered.

"This is gonna be so not fun!" Makoto pouted, lying on her back in the Network as Megaman and Roll tilted their heads, "What the hell?! Why can't I go in on Earth, huh?! Why do I gotta be in the Network?!"

"Um…Your tail, I guess," Roll replied.

"Ugh! Lousy no-good rules and regulations!" Makoto pouted, "I even picked out a cute one-piece that was sexy but modest enough for no one to question why I'm with kids in it!"

"It is kinda weird," Megaman agreed.

"I'm sure we can have our own fun!" Roll assured, kneeling down beside the Beastkin.

"Right," Megaman agreed, "It may not be like the waterpark out there, but we can still have fun in the network of the waterpark."

"Right…" Makoto sighed as she sat up, "Ugh…Why does this outfit have to always be on me in the Network no matter what I wear out on Earth?"

"No idea," both replied with honest shrugs of confusion.

"Ugh…" Makoto whined.

"Maybe we can get you a FashionChip?" Roll suggested.

"FashionChip?"

"Oh, that one is a long story," Megaman recalled.

"How's the case feeling?" Lan asked, looking at his PeT in a bulky case.

"A perfect fit," Megaman replied, "No water's going to leak in here with the PeT and SynchroChip in it!"

"Nice!" Lan gave a thumbs up.

"Lan!" Maylu called.

"Hey, Ma…" Lan began before blushing.

Maylu walked up, wearing a modest one-piece swimsuit. It was mainly black with part of it a hot pink divided from the black with a jagged pattern. She had on a pair of hot pink sandals and her normal hairpin was gone, replaced with a hot pink bandana wrapped around her upper left arm. She smiled at him with a giggle.

"What do you think?" Maylu asked, making a small hop in her stop.

"Ah…um…Y-You look great…" Lan admitted before shaking his blush off when he noticed something, "Um…Did you get…taller?"

"Taller?" Maylu pondered, tilting her head until she noticed he was tilting his head up a little more than usual and she had hers tilted down.

"Oh that's probably my fault!" Makoto sheepishly replied from the case Roll's PeT was in, "The food I've been making is pretty rich in nutritional goods and the exercises can do this since the two together are meant to make a body extra healthy and strong."

"Really?" the two asked in surprise.

"Yeah. Trust me, you're gonna be as tall as me by the time you're done with puberty, Maylu. Maybe taller. Who knows?" Makoto replied as she shrugged.

"?!" Maylu blinked several times in surprise.

"Huh? That food works like that?" Lan asked.

"Of course it does! It's the diet of my whole family of nut farmers!" Makoto replied.

"Nut farmers?" Megaman asked.

"Yep! Ma and Pa have a big ol' farm filled with all kinds of nut trees. Acorns, cashews, peanuts…you name it, we grow it!" Makoto explained, "Ma would make all kinds of yummy goodies and she'd go sell 'em on the market! I get my looks from her and my muscles from my Pa. Oh, he's so strong he can throw grizzly bears right off the mountains!"

"Whoa~" Lan awed.

"She also has seven younger siblings," Maylu added.

"Seven?!" Lan gawked.

"Technically nine due to these two gals," Makot corrected, pointing at Maylu while wrapping an arm over Roll in a side hug, before sighing as her tail and ears drooped.

"...I'm sure you'll find a way back, Makoto," Megaman assured, reaching up and patting her shoulder.

"We just gotta find one of those weird kettle things, right?" Lan asked.

"Cauldrons," Megaman and Roll corrected.

"...Heh. You're right. I'm sure there's one out there I can use," Makoto grinned, "Well, what are you guys waiting for? Let's have some fun!"

"Okay!" both humans beamed.

"Big Sis…" Roll whispered.

"Hey, it'll be alright. I've got two great lil' sisters here that have done a lot of help," Makoto quietly assured, patting her head and earning a small giggle from Roll, before saying aloud, "Right! Fun times a-go-go!"

Maylu and Lan screamed in excitement as they shot out of a slide, riding on a connected innertube for two people. The tube bounced for a good few meters before coming to an end. The two worked together to lift the tube up and get out of the water and put it on a conveyor belt that brought it back up to the top of the ride.

"Man, that was awesome!" Lan cheered.

"It was so fast! And that spiral in the middle of the ride was so exciting!" Maylu beamed.

"Uh-huh!" Lan nodded before spotting a sno-cone vendor, "Oh, you want to get some sno-cones?"

"Sounds great," Maylu replied, "It's a bit warm today even with the fun water rides we've been on so far."

"Okay! You sit at that bench and I'll be back with them!"

"Strawberry on mine, please!" Maylu called.

"Ah! Me too, Lan, Mega!" Roll called out.

"Okay, okay~!" Lan assured as he ran over to the vendor and started to wait in line.

"You seem to really want to make sure you both have a good time, huh?" Lan looked to his side to see Makoto in an acorn-colored one-piece swimsuit like Maylu's, the way it hugged her curves making sure any who saw her would turn their gaze at her figure in it.

"Well…yeah," Lan replied, "She's my best friend and…well…my…" he looked at his feet, a sad look forming on his face, "...my only friend in town."

"Huh? Only friend?" Makoto repeated.

"Earlier this year, when I first got Megaman? I had two friends; Maylu and Dex. Then it grew to include another friend Yai and then Tory. But…before the Darkloids appeared, Tory had to transfer schools because his dad had to transfer jobs to another part of the country. Dex is all the way in Jawaii, working at a curry shop. Yai had to move due to her dad's business. Sure we can see them at times thanks to Yai being…well…Yai and Tory visits at times like when we went to some hot springs that we didn't even get to enjoy…"

"Long story?" Makoto guessed, earning a nod from Lan.

"But, yeah…for the most part…it's just Maylu and me," Lan explained, sighing.

"What about that Chaud guy?"

"He's more of a rival," Lan replied, "So…I wanna make sure we have great memories together. I…I don't…"

"...Anata wa hitori janai."

"Huh?" Lan pondered as she knelt down to look him in the eyes, a gentle expression on her face, "Wh…What does that mean?"

"In my world, there was a nation called Japan. They spoke an amazing language with words often having multiple meanings," Makoto explained, "It was lost when the Black Beast appeared, but we keep the nation's language and culture alive as a sign of respect to what was lost. What I just used was their language: Japanese. 'Anata wa hitori janai' means 'You are not alone.'" she tapped him over his heart and forehead with a finger, "No matter how far your friends or family are, they will always be with you in your heart and your mind. Megaman has a way to show it physically."

"...DoubleSoul," Lan realized, earning a nod from Makoto.

"One day, I'll be gone as well, most likely from finding a Cauldron and returning to my world," Makoto went on, "But those I've met here will always have a part of me with them. Maylu and Roll especially with the time we've spent together."

Lan nodded, "..." he hugged her, "Thanks, Makoto."

"Heh. Anytime, kiddo," Makoto chuckled, returning the hug, "Now then…I'm gonna get you a big ol' discount."

"Huh?" Lan pondered.

"If Maylu were in this line, I'd be showing her a time-honored technique all women should learn," Makoto winked.

"Mmm~! So this is a sno-cone," Roll noted, a plastic spoon in hand as she took a scoop of the frozen treat and took another bite.

"Pretty chilly like the Earth ice cream," Megaman shivered, a sno-cone in his own hands.

"Hey, we're all supposed ta have some fun. That includes you two," Makoto grinned as she ate her own, "...Hey, Roll?"

"Hm?"

"Gotta talk some private stuff with Mega for a few minutes."

"Ah, gotcha," Roll nodded as she walked off.

"Huh? What do you want to know?" Megaman asked as Makoto led him in the opposite direction Roll went.

"...Did Lan tell you why he wants to do stuff with Maylu lately?"

"Yeah. Lan may seem like he can make friends easily, but…it's actually harder than you'd think," Megaman noted, glancing at the screen and seeing the two laughing as they talked and ate their own sno-cones at a table, "He may seem all smiles, but…he's scared of losing Maylu."

"He admitted that to me, too," Makoto admitted, "I gave him a little pep talk and helped him know he's never alone."

"Hm?"

"Mega, you should know this more than anyone else. You're not alone, no one is. We're all there for one another in spirit…always," Makoto noted, "But you? Mega, you actually wear that on you."

"Huh? …Wait, you mean DoubleSoul?"

"Exactly," Makoto nodded, "They're a physical embodiment of what I told Lan: Anata wa hitori janai."

"Anata wa hitori janai?"

"It means 'You are not alone,' and DoubleSoul proves it," Makoto grinned, "Don't you feel something each time you use it?"

"...Feel?" Megaman repeated, "I…I've never really thought of it outside of the first time I use it. Often for the fact that I'm in the middle of something dangerous."

"Well, maybe wear them casually one time and see how they feel to you," Makoto suggested, "I'm sure that what you feel in them is something a lot more than what you'd expect."

"Maybe…" Megaman nodded, earning a pat on the head by her.

"That's good to hear. Okay, Rolly! We're done being all secret!" Makoto called before walking back with a contemplative Megaman.

"Ne, Mega? Wanna try each other's sno-cone?" Roll offered.

"..." Megaman didn't respond, still pondering her words.

"...Mega?" Roll asked, reaching out and placing a hand on his shoulder.

"H-Huh? What?" Megaman snapped out of it to look at her.

"Do you wanna try each other's sno-cone?" Roll asked.

"Um…sure. Okay," Megaman nodded.

"Great!" Roll beamed, "Mine's strawberry. I think that's my favorite fruit in the whole world thanks to Big Sis."

Megaman chuckled, "I have blue raspberry. Which is kinda weird, since I don't think raspberries come in blue."

'And they're being so cute,' Makoto mentally giggled as she watched the two try the other's sno-cone.

"...Huh…" Lan spoke up as the two rode on the bus, the afternoon sun turning the skies orange above them.

"No attacks…no calls for you to go somewhere…" Maylu listed.

"Is…Is this what a normal day is meant to be?" Lan asked, tilting his head.

"I…guess so?" Megaman mimicked Lan.

Roll giggled, "Yes. That is a normal day," Roll replied, "Just having fun with nothing like Darkloids or Nebula or anything really."

"It feels like it's been years since that's been something," Lan admitted.

"Guess that means we'll have to try to have more of them, huh?" Makoto grinned.

"...Right!" Lan and Maylu beamed.

"I'm really glad," Maylu noted, "Just having fun together without anything bad happening…" she smiled at Lan, "You're a great friend, Lan. Thanks for inviting me today."

"It…It's no problem," Lan chuckled, scratching his cheek with a small blush while looking away from her.

"Oh that is just adorable," Makoto softly giggled before Lan's PeT rang, "Huh?"

"Oh no…" Maylu grimaced as Lan and her moved to the back of the somewhat empty bus and he answered it.

"Mr. Famous?"

"Just Famous," Famous replied, "Pack your bags, Agent HIkari, you're being deployed to Sharo."

"Huh?!" Lan gawked before Yuchiro appeared on the screen.

"I'll tell your mother about it, but you need to hurry!"

"Huh? Papa? What's going on?" Lan asked.

"There's a crisis going on in Sharo. Darkloid activity has occurred and a Dimensional Area has been established in the area," Famous explained.

"You gotta be kidding me!" Lan gawked.

"No, I am not. I'm sending you the ticket for your flight. Get to the airport ASAP," Famous ordered before hanging up.

"..." Lan frowned as Maylu bit her lower lip.

Makoto hopped out of the Network and sat beside Lan, "Sharo?"

"That's where a friend of ours lives."

"Hmph. Not my friend," Lan huffed, "Guy's a jerk!"

"Searchman is alright. And don't you remember Raika did a good job while I was incapacitated with Raoul," Megaman pointed out.

"Ugh…" Lan sighed before looking at Maylu, "..."

"...Go," Maylu spoke, giving him an assuring smile, "They need you, Lan. I'll be okay. I have Roll, Big Sis, and Rush here."

"You two have got this!" Roll encouraged.

"...Thanks, Maylu," Lan spoke, holding her hand, "I promise I'll be back as fast as I can, alright? And my daily never goes back on their word, remember?"

"Of course!" Maylu beamed.

'I feel like I'm going to have to deal with sad baby sisters the moment the boys leave,' Makoto thought, glancing at Lan, 'You and Megaman better get home fast from this…'
