Tony touched down and got picked up by SHIELD to be deposited near Banner's position. He wasn't sure how he felt about it all but it did save him time. Thanks to SHIELD's frankly creepily accurate tabs on the guy finding him wouldn't be hard.
"Are you sure you don't want help relocating Banner to a secure location?"
One of the agents asked with vague pity in his eyes. It was a look that said he wasn't expecting Tony to walk out of the exchange intact or even had trust that Tony could keep Banner from going loco.
"I appreciate the ride and all but I've told you, you do not need to be nearby or on the look out. This is just a casual meeting no need for any extra expenses or manpower."
The look he gave after that was even less flattering but Tony was happy to see the man disappear into the crowd after pointing out where Banner was and what he was doing.
Tony knew that if he wanted to, the Doctor could be quite the threat but as far as he could tell it was only when the man was unduly threatened. Bruce, his Bruce that was, said to treat the other part of Banner like a wild animal with heightened instincts for danger. So long as they played it cool and didn't provoke the guy too hard it should be smooth going.
Why SHIELD saw Banner like a real life monster was beyond him. The balls on them to ask if he wanted a squad for back up should he go feral. Honestly. The man had been in India for a while now without any problems. If it wasn't for Bruce ensuring SHIELD weren't crawling nearby like bloodthirsty mosquitoes he'd be worried they wouldn't listen to him and were around ready to mess up his meeting. Nothing like people in hiding watching your every move to trigger your flight or fight, Tony could relate.
Upon realizing Banner was currently working on people's wounds Tony hung back and bought some street food to occupy his time. It didn't taste bad, in fact he liked it enough to go for seconds, it was when he was taking a bite of his second stick of meat that he had his lucky break. The good Doctor was leaving.
Catching up he called out cheerfully, "Hey Dr. Banner!" The man in question had a slight hunch and a tired face, his eyes however were bright and sharp, zeroing in on Tony instantly and if his frown had any indication already knew something was up but wasn't sure how to take it just yet. Tony for his part took another bite of his food, finishing it, and smiled. "Can we talk real quick?"
"No, I'm sorry but I'm done for the day." The man turned to leave in what was the start of a speedy departure but Tony simply sped up to follow.
"I just wanted to say I'm a huge fan of your work," Tony gushed unrepentantly, a skip in his step. Banners hands that were fiddling with a watch flexed slightly and seemed like he was going to say something but Tony added, "Oh and the way you turn into a green bundle of rage~"
The tiredness in the man's face appeared to double as he sighed, "This way."
They came to a stop at what was obviously a temporary hideaway. The man probably knew all of the little ins and outs having been in hiding as long as he had. Once inside Banner turned to him as he put away his coat and rolled up his sleeves.
"How did you find me?" There was an underlining tone of tempered ice that Tony found particularly controlled for someone supposedly on a hair trigger of freaking out at all times. At least that was what he was told about the man.
"Some scary secret agents who like to think of themselves as the good guys but are really just nosy bastards." Tony said beaming. "They never lost sight of you even once you know but they aren't connected to the people you think so you don't have to worry about a raid coming in."
Shrugging Tony adjusted his armband seeing everything was still connected and good to go should anything go south but he had a feeling he wouldn't need it. He had Bruce, did he need a more accurate alarm?
Fists clenching before loosening the Doctor sighed deeply, "I should've known." There was a bitterness in his voice that Tony didn't like.
"As for what I'm doing here, it's simple. I'm here to offer you a job."
The following laugh was just as bitter as his previous words, "Oh I bet. I know just what kind of job people like you would offer."
"Really?" Tony cocked his head, "So you know I want to offer you free room and board with pay, a specialized lab for any of your research. Like minded fellow scientists to help with any needs, health and dental?" Tony rubbed at his beard in a show of carelessness, "State of the art technology and a view to take your breath away?"
A baffled air took over Banner before he steeled himself, huffing, "Let me guess where you'd lock me away, Antarctica?"
Tony guffawed, "Goodness no! I was thinking more like New York and it is just an offer, I don't mind if you want to be a free roaming worker I'll just send ya the benefits through mail or something." It was obvious from the way Banner pulled out a chair to sit down that he wasn't used to Tony's brand of energy and needed a moment. But that action told him he wasn't as on edge as before if only a smidge.
Rubbing his forehead Banner frowned, "New York? No one crazy enough would allow me near so many people, besides didn't you hear I'm-"
"The Green Machine or some equally silly fear inducing moniker yeah I know, really that's just an added benefit I just want you for your wits. I wasn't lying when I said I was a fan and I recently came across another Doctor I think you'd enjoy working with. Seriously her specialty will tickle even your brain." Tony hopped onto the table as there wasn't another chair and grinned sideways at the Doctor who was staring holes into Tony's head.
"Who are you exactly?"
Tony was a little amazed the Doc couldn't recognize him off the bat but he let it slide, "Who am I? Why, I'm Tony Stark, a billionaire philanthropist, creator of Iron Man and whom only has partial ties to the spies who kept tabs on you. Whaddya say, join me?"
Grand speech given and catered smile in place he winked at Banner for added effect.
"Um, thanks I guess but I don't think I'd feel comfortable in that environment." It was a sheepish smile but Tony could see the fire hidden behind his eyes, Tony waved his hand nonchalantly.
"Like I said that's fine, you can stay here if you want, this was more of a meet and greet, in any case you can be a tester for my new gadgets. Take this phone for instance, want to guess all the crazy features that are inside it?" Tony waggled his eyebrows.
Banner was silent for a while as he assessed Tony and didn't hide any of his shrewdness, "I see." He spoke softly, eventually he got up slowly and leaned towards Tony his eyes sparking green, Bruce in Tony's close conscious tipped his head but otherwise didn't react leaving Tony to know this was a scare tactic, maybe even a test.
With hands on either side of Tony who sat on Banner's table the man couldn't give off more dangerous vibes if he tried, he spoke once more, "If I were to take you up on your offer just how would you react to a visit from the Other Guy?"
The Doctors skin tone flushed green and hints of a turning was happening but all Tony could do was grin which widened to the point of hurting, as it was, Tony knew he had him. "Want to see?" Twirling the phone in his hand, another bout of silence before Banner backed away with a laugh, "You are the strangest man I've met."
Smirking, "I aim to please," tapping the phone it lit up and a small holographic schematic of what he dubbed the Den. While Banner marveled at the fact a phone could do such a thing Ton inwardly lamented it was all he could do for now, the Stark phone was still in early access.
"This is a general machinations for a holdings of our green buddy, should you ever feel the urge coming on you can walk in, it'll be voice activated and monitored by my AI so you can enter as you like and leave as you like. It's fit so that you can exit so long as you ask, or you know, not throwing a fit. If you don't ask or aren't capable of it the holding will keep you until you return to your senses and hey, if the big guy just wants to stretch his legs and thrash a few things he totally can."
Banner looked at the schematics for what was essentially a cage for his more violent side and seemed to consider Tony once more, it was likely he didn't know what to make of someone like Tony but was getting the general idea in their short time together. "And I could just enter and leave whenever I like." It made sense that his tone was still skeptical, Tony could only curse the people who made him like this.
"Yup! We can make a contract and all that jazz if that's the sort of thing to assuage you but like I said you don't have to take me up but boy am I not joking when I say I'm super excited at the prospect of working with both of you."
"Both huh…" Apparently faced with a too good to be true offer Banner went quiet but Tony didn't mind, propping his head up with his hand all he could do was smile encouragingly. Of course he knew Banner and the other guy as he was called were a packaged deal. After all, Tony understood packaged deals being one himself.
As time passed Banner seemed to come to his own conclusion. "You really want me to work with you don't you?" He gave Tony a passing glance, shaking his head like Tony was crazy. "You aren't even scared of the Other Guy."
This was said more for himself as it was under his breath, with a more straightforward stare he gave a faint smile, the first genuine emotion that didn't seem tinged in sadness. "I still need to give it some thought but I will keep in contact, thank you Mr. Stark."
With a hand reaching out Tony could only match his seriousness with some of his own, grasping hands they shared a hopeful shake and as Tony made to leave, he tossed over his shoulder,
"I look forward to our future acquaintances, keep the phone but if you do get rid of it make sure to properly destroy it k? It might be a prototype but its still important tech y'know!"
Once Banner messed with the phone it would register his finger prints and JARVIS was able to access it to ensure only Banner used it with some face recognition. After one last parting wave Tony left feeling good about how that day went. Things were falling into place. The hero made his way back to his jet with the comforting presence of Bruce in his mind and the fulfillment of a job well done.
