Jordan was absolutely furious when he figured out that his parents believed that he was part of Jonathan's plan to ghost them. Jonathan was mad on Jordan, too. And Jordan spent hours with brooding about what his brother went through and what his brother had to experience. He was on Jon's side. No doubt! But he was left in the dark, too!
When he entered his mother's car to get Jon's truck out of the forest after breakfast, he spitefully said to his father that, if he knew before that Jonathan ghosts them, he would have helped Jon at any cost. He was grateful for Timmy Tanner's friendship, that even survived his move to Germany, that made it possible for Jon to have a place in Metropolis to stay at.
But Jordan was not so sure about it. His relationship with his brother was always very close. Before and after the move to Smallville, Jonathan had been his anchor, his mental support, and his best friend! But what was Jordan to his brother, now?
There was no doubt: Their roles had changed! Before Jordan's powers showed up, Jonathan was the protector of them. Now it was Jordan! And while Jordan always let out all his frustration directly on others, Jon was always some kind of resting place and mediator. But also, someone who does not openly talk about his issues. And ever since their fight yesterday, Jordan had to think about their relationship and Jon's feelings more than ever before!
Jordan saw it. He always saw it. But he never fully understood it. After the X-K disaster he felt confirmed in his thoughts. But even that was wrong. It was not everything about his powers. They were just the tip of the iceberg. Jon was over it! It was the whole thing around it! It was this town; it was their whole family and mostly it was because of Jon's feelings and his needs that got ignored too much! By their parents, by Sam, by everyone…
Ever before he and Jon knew the truth about their dad, Jordan felt so terribly out of place. With learning the truth and his powers coming in, everything in his life made more sense. He had a good relationship with his father now. Had great friends. And a promising future ahead of him on his father's side as a hero. But what about Jon?
Before the reveal, Jon had an easy relationship with their family, while Jordan often felt misunderstood and simply branded as the complicated one, that needs therapy and pills. He was always jealous when Sam asked Jon to join him on a fishing-trip and not him. Not that he would have agreed but it would had been nice if he asked him, too at least. Every time his father missed one of their father-son-sessions at therapy, he was pissed. Or when his father missed other occasions. And now they spend every day together with training, flying, or having fun otherwise.
Jonathan on the other hand, lost everything. His friends, football, his future… and Jordan couldn't remember their dad ever spending time with Jonathan only.
After spending the whole night, brooding about everything, Jordan concluded that he failed his brother. He outshined him, he ruined his chance to get accepted by the football-team, he broke his arm, and he was responsible for him being jealous. Jordan was mad when he figured out that Jon's supposed powers came from X-K. But after a while, and after thinking a lot about it, he knew that he would have taken X-K, too just to prove himself. Otherwise, his parents always treated them differently, so maybe they would have at least taken Jordan to the fortress, too. Just to not let him feel left out, like they did with Jon.
Of course, Jordan agreed to get Jon's broken truck out of the forest. Before they left, he sent another message to his brother, to ask him why he didn't tell him about his plan to ghost them. Because Jon's battery was empty, they drove with Lois' car there, to bypass the battery. Jordan made his license, too some time ago. Mainly to not cause any suspicion. But also, to drive his mother to her treatments and to the doctors, as she was too weak to be flown. And to make other things, like grocery shopping.
They will start the motor, and Jordan drives Jon's truck back to the farm to park it on its usual spot to show his brother that they care.
It was an awful silence in the car. Jordan didn't dare to say anything to his father. And Clark knew that he deserved this. But he didn't endure it.
"Jordan, please say something!" Clark literally begged while they drove.
It was a short ride, but Jordan understood that this was the way his brother was moving around and why he so desperately wanted driving-lessons and his license. All while Jordan could fly around the world and could go everywhere he wants and every time he wants. Jon had to feel left behind by this fact. His brother was trapped on the ground and forced to rely on others. Jordan had no clue how it feels anymore.
The day he learned to fly, Jonathan was still kind of grounded for the X-K and left behind at the farm to do his chores. No wonder that Jonathan was so mad when they returned.
"Jordan?" Clark was obstinate.
"What?" Jordan finally moaned.
"Tell me what is going on!"
"You don't get it, don't you!"
Clark signed. "I know I should ask your brother this question! And I know I shouldn't ask the next question, too! But, do you have any advice for me how to talk to your brother and how to apologize?"
"What about listening to him better! Trying to understand his concerns! Stop making him empty promises! I spent a lot of time thinking about it, and I tell you I am not surprised if he really already gave up being a part of our family! Believe me, you are not the reason he stayed after your promise with the new family-fortress turned out to be just a pathetic attempt to appease him! And now that mom feels better, Jon has finally time to let his frustration out!"
Clark thought about it. The new family-fortress was meant well. He really meant it when he said it's a place for everyone. But it became mainly a place for him and Jordan. Jonathan was right when he said that it is only for the family members who can fly. The few times, Jonathan was at the fortress he still felt so out of place.
"I have headache and I feel the urge to vomit!" Jordan said. "I barely slept last night, because every time I fell asleep, I was dreaming about Jon and how everyone in the family hurt him. Dad, I didn't want to believe it for a long time… But I can't deny it any longer!"
"So… What do you want to tell me?" Clark honestly feared the answer.
"I want to tell you that it is your fault that Jon took the X-K!"
Suddenly Clark braked the car hardly to bring it to an abrupt stop. Jordan could feel how he was thrown forward but got stopped by the seatbelt. He could smell the stench of burnt tires after they stopped. Jordan looked to his father. He expected him to be mad and trying to defend himself. But instead, Clark was pale. His eyes were wet, and his hands were trembling. Looking more desperate than angry.
"My fault?"
"Yes, dad! Your fault! Yours, moms, and grandpas! And mine! I didn't listen to him when he told me about Timmy Ryan's doping. And I didn't tell him about my training with grandpa! I thought he is just jealous on me! That it went much deeper I realized after I found him crying in his room."
"When? After I scolded him for the X-K?" Clark asked. He remembered that he could hear Jon crying after he left his room that evening.
"No! After we returned from my flying lesson!" Jordan became louder. Clark looked on him with big eyes. "You promised to him to help him! But then you left with me? You left him behind as if you don't care for him! You could have called him at least, to tell him that we leave and that he does not have to make all the chores alone! And then he yelled that I am your favorite because I got the powers! And that he knows that you don't love him for being human!"
Clark got even paler when he heard that. The barn-scene came up yesterday again, while Jonathan yelled on them, but he always guessed they were over it. But Clark never really apologized for it.
"This is not true. I love your brother as much as I…" Clark said but Jordan cut him off.
"I mean… Every time I got a new power, he helped me through it, and you apologized. Because you said you wanted to spare us. After I learned to fly, you told me you are proud on me! But Jon was not proud! He was offended! Not because I have powers, but because you ignored him! Here in Smallville, Jon is what I was in Metropolis! If I would be the human-one I would have taken the X-K much earlier and much longer. Because I know now that you would have never told me that you are proud on me if I would not be able to fly."
Clark was even more shocked. A tear ran down Jordan's face when he opened his seatbelt to leave the car.
"And you know what the worst is even: That I needed months to realize this! Five minutes after we offended Jon, you lost your powers and were literally turned as powerless as Jon. And even that didn't remember you to talk to him or to apologize to him." Jordan opened the door and stepped out. "I have a question to you: When you saw his doppelganger flying in front of you, what were you thinking?"
"His doppelganger?"
"Yes! Jon-El! When you saw him, did you think about Jon, or about me and if I am able to fly, too? Tell me the truth!"
Clark looked on Jordan's stern face and felt that poisonous glare that looked exactly like Lois'. Jordan may get Clark's powers, but he got a lot from his mother, too.
"I… I thought about, how strong Jon-El is and how good he is mastering his powers and about if you could…" Clark held his mouth.
"So, you thought about me being able to fly when you saw Jon flying! Gosh… you are really a dick. I was a dick! I'll wait by his truck…"
Jordan closed the door and left with his superspeed. Clark looked after him and needed a few more minutes to calm down. To process what they just talked about.
Jon-El was the one with the powers in his world, but he had never trued emotional or parental support. And after the other Lois revealed Jon-El's connections to Ally, the boy didn't hold back his hate towards him. Clark knew that the punches he got, were meant for his bizarro doppelganger. And Jon-El was a warning! A warning he successfully ignored and went on with his life. Lois told him what happened in those 33 days he was gone.
'Cuz there I have powers! Maybe then you would actually listen to me!' Clark heard Jonathan's voice yelling on him again.
It's true: Since he learned about Jordan's powers, he spent more time with Jordan than with Jonathan. Because with Jordan it is easier, as they have something in common: Their powers! With Jonathan it was the football-team. But if Clark was honest to himself: He only became assistant coach to keep an eye on Jordan, whom he never should have allowed to join the team! Jordan cheated as much as Jonathan and all the other X-K takers did!
While Clark brooded, Jordan went to his brother's truck and allowed his tears to flow. Now that he was alone and nobody saw him, he could allow himself to be sad…
He couldn't believe that he just lashed out on his father like that. Jonathan was too pride to allow this. Jordan had a lot of respect for his brother and his patience and his willpower. Thinking about what his brother went through, this respect grew even more. Jordan was sure: If he would have been 'the human-one', his parents wouldn't had let him feel left out. But he also would have already killed himself. Because Jon was stronger than him. Powers taken aside…
Now he didn't even have a chance to tell his father about the nightmare he had last night. About the day he learned the fly. It didn't matter anymore. Because what really mattered that day, was that Jon was left behind to clean the barn, while he and his father had fun together! Because his father was unable to relate to Jon.
Jordan took his Smartphone again to check if he got any messages from his brother. No respond to his last messages, of whom most were not even read. Then he tried to call Timmy Tanner in Metropolis…
"Hello!"
"Timmy, this is Jordan!"
"Jordan, did you find Jon?"
"No! Timmy, we found Jon's truck. Abandoned! The battery is dead! He left the keys behind! My mom thinks he is ghosting us! Timmy, if you help him, please tell at least me! I am on his side!"
"Are you really thinking that I am making this up? Jordan, what do you think about me! Do you really think that I drive to the airport, wait for 8 hours for nothing and call your father past midnight to prank anyone? Jon was sad. And you pretend to be on his side?! He told me how your dad prefers you. What is it? Did you learn to fly, or what was the reason you two ditched your brother yesterday on this extremely important day!"
"No, I learned that… WHA… WHAT?"
Suddenly Jordan could feel his stomach lurch. Timmy's statement sound like he knew the secret. But where? And how?
"I mean… ehm… ehm… What do you mean with that?" Jordan stuttered. Maybe it was better to act dumb and pretend that it was ridiculous. This always works for his father.
"I know it, Jordan! I know everything!" Timmy said. He didn't care for Jordan being upset to hear this over the phone. Unlike Jon, Jordan deserved this little shock, in his eyes.
"What… what do you mean? I mean… aww… where…"
"A week before I moved to Germany, I witnessed your father landing in the alley between our houses in Metropolis. Don't force me to discuss this over the phone. It was worse enough to explain everything to Jon over the phone."
"Jon knows that you know! I mean… you shouldn't know at all!"
Jordan was shocked. Timmy Tanner, a boy he hadn't meet in years, knew the family-secret? And that for years now. Longer than him and Jon? Jordan looked around worried. His father was still a few miles away. So, he had a couple of minutes to process this information. With trembling hands Jordan grabbed the key to open the door and jumped on the front passenger seat, closed the door, and listened to Timmy's story…
On the farm meanwhile, Lois waited for Jonathan's call while she called everyone she knew and everyone they guessed, Jonathan could have gone to seek shelter for the night. She tried to call Jordan, to ask him to call Timmy but he ignored her call because he was talking to Timmy already.
She called everyone. John-Henry, Natalie, Lana, Sarah, Chrissy, Kyle… everyone who knew their secret. That Kyle figured out, was an accident. They were even kind of glad that he knows, so he does not feel left out by the rest of his family. They were lucky enough that Candice never figured out. It didn't end well between her and Jon after the drama revolving her father. But she called her anyway to figure out if she knows anything or if she and Jon were in touch.
She didn't know anything. Of course not! Jon banished her after her backstabbing. It hurt her to see him that heartbroken. And Jon was, after this toxic relationship, very careful with the people he trusted…
Nobody had answers for her. Just more questions about yesterday. And if it was really necessary…
"No! No, it wasn't! Did you hear from Jonathan, or not?" Lois asked everyone after they scolded them for what they did to Jonathan.
And everyone said: "No!"
Lois hung up and lined one name after the next from the list. When she was done with their friends, she continued with Jonathan's old teammates. Clark still had the list with phone contacts from his time as assistant coach…
The responses from there were a weird mix of apathy and malicious joy…
Jordan meanwhile sat on the passenger seat next to the driver's seat of his brother's truck and listened to Timmy's story. How Timmy, at age 8, saw Superman landing in the narrow alley between the houses. Changing into Clark and entering the house. Knowing that this secret is too big for him, Timmy left and kept it for himself. Waiting for the right moment to share it with Jonathan and Jordan.
The years passed and Timmy remained in touch with the Kent-boys, while living in Berlin. Always wondering if the boys knew it by themselves or if they have powers, too. After the Kent's moved to Smallville, Timmy guessed that it was to hide their powers from the people. Which was even true. But he always guessed that both had powers. For him it was the only logical explanation. Their father is Superman, so powerlessness makes no sense!
A year ago, Timmy and his parents returned to Metropolis.
That Jonathan is powerless, he never dared to think, until the day Jon called him, crying waterfalls, to ask for shelter for the night. Because their father, ditched him coldly because prefers Jordan. Because they have 'something in common'! Timmy became suspicious. He invited Jonathan to stay with him, but Jon never came. Because the Ally-situation escalated before they had a chance to talk, and Jon was too worried for his family to be mad on them.
But the real confirmation came when it was revealed to the public that Superman has a powered and a powerless child. Timmy always wondered how Jon deals with this situation but never got a chance to ask.
Jon called more often, and they talked more. But Jon never talked about the secret. He just needed someone to talk to when he was in a bad mood. Jordan realized that he was not the right person to talk about this matter and was grateful for Timmy Tanner's friendship again.
Then, yesterday after the great escalation, Jon was already in the truck when he called Timmy under tears and asked for a place to stay for the night. Telling Timmy how disappointed he was and how everyone ever and ever again left him alone with his problems.
That's when Timmy confessed that he knows everything. Everything he could hear was Jonathan braking hardly and being mad on Timmy for knowing it longer than him. Jordan looked behind and saw the skid marks on the street. At least they know now where they come from and the reason why Jon stopped here. Then they talked for a few minutes before Jon ended the call and promised to hurry up.
"And that was the last time I heard from him!" Timmy finished the story.
"Timmy… you know you can't tell anyone…" Jordan wailed.
"And ruining Jon's life more than you and your dad already did? Gosh… and I was a fan of you guys. Jon is sad enough because nobody cares for him and the world's gossiping about him is bothering him more than he admits. You can at least fly away and get a distraction whenever you want! Jon is struck at your stupid farm! I know about the barn-scene, Jordan!" Timmy ranted.
"Oh my gosh… you know about it?" Jordan could feel his face turning red and how the shame came back in his head. After that he wanted to call their grandfather to quit their training-sessions. But they never had a chance to talk about it because of the escalation of events.
"Jon told me under tears. That was so crappy from you and your father! But I am not going to discuss this over the phone! I call some people now to ask them if they heard anything from Jon. Enjoy your powers!"
Timmy ended the call and Jordan was shocked about the latest revelation: Timmy knew everything. And he believes that nobody cares for Jon, too because he has no powers. Of course, Timmy doesn't know how things really are. But Jordan understood that every outsider would consider their family like that. And Jordan honestly, too.
A knock on the window woke him up from his thoughts. His father had arrived, without that he noticed.
"Jordan, open the engine hood, please!" Clark said. Thinking Jordan was just sitting on the passenger seat to brood again.
Jordan left the car and walked to the driver's seat to open the hood. He was upset but decided to not to tell his father about Timmy's reveal. At least not now. He was still too mad on his father. And too worried for Jon, who must feel even more offended by the fact that their friend knew the secret longer than him.
"Jordan, are you okay? Your brother is mad, I understand. And I take the full responsibility for it…" Clark said.
Jordan didn't want to listen to his father's attempt to defend himself and just got into the truck again.
But that was the moment he realized that something was wrong…
He felt it as soon as he was sitting on the driver's seat. He and his brother had the same size. When Jordan drove his brother's truck, he never had to adjust the seat or the mirrors or anything else. But now, when he put his hands on the steering wheel, he could feel that it was lower. And the seat was not in the right position. It was too far forward…
"Jordan…?" Clark noticed that Jordan was suddenly so pale.
"Dad, Jon didn't drive here…"
