"Let's date."
The first words out of Luka's mouth after Kagami bore her heart to him stunned her (and Erin and Hayate). To be fair, his actual first thoughts may have involved wedding preparations, but perhaps that wasn't the best idea at the moment.
"Wait, what?!" Kagami exclaimed. While she didn't dislike the suggestion in the least, just because she told him her worries doesn't mean that they were actually dealt with properly.
"Let me clarify," Luka explained. "Let's go on a date. Just one," he emphasised by holding up his index finger.
"One date, and then we'll see from there," he suggested. "Truth be told, I've liked you for a while too. Romantically." He took a step in front of her and turned to face her fully. "And I've also wondered if I was good enough-," he quickly switched up his words at Kagami's glare and corrected himself, "if we were suited for each other as a couple."
"So, you're suggesting that we try it out with one date?" Kagami asked.
"Yup!" Luka responded brightly.
"And do you think we can find out whether we're suited for each other with just one date?"
"Who knows?" Luka smiled. "If it doesn't go well, we'll stay friends, if it does, then we'll try for another date. What do you say?"
After contemplating it for a bit, Kagami nodded her head in agreement," I think that's a good idea."
For the first time in a while both of them felt fully relieved. Even if there were many unknowns ahead of them, they relaxed in knowing that they would face them together; always as friends, and maybe as something more. Despite the cold, Kagami and Luka felt warm as they smiled at each other, the music only they could hear muffling out the squeals coming from behind a nearby tree.
Kagami brushed her shoulder length hair out of her face after a gust of wind had just tousled it. Deep in thought, she stared up at the sky and sighed as she reflected the past few years at university.
"What's on your mind, Ojou-sama?" Luka's voice came from directly behind her from where she was lying on the picnic towel. Tilting her head back a bit, she gazed upwards to see Luka smiled straight down on her.
"I was just thinking about how it's been over two years since you've asked me out," she said, returning his smile.
"Hmm. I'm surprised you haven't gotten sick of me as yet," Luka briefly slipped into his own reminiscing on how one date, turned into another, then another, which turned into not being able to distinguish between 'test dates' and the start of the official relationship.
"Who says I haven't?" Kagami smirked as she sat up and pressed her back against Luka's chest. Taking advantage of their position, Luka wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his head on her shoulder.
"You still can't get rid of me, though," he mumbled playfully into her neck.
Squirming a bit from the ticklish sensation, Kagami eventually rested her head on his.
"Surprisingly, not yet," she teased.
It was not as if she had seriously thought of breaking up with Luka. But, there was sometimes the doubt that after university, they would be on two very different paths of life that would eventually split them apart. And, in fact, they were on different paths.
Luka's graduation ceremony was just a few days away and he was set to tour with his father the week after. He had decided that though he knew the rocker lifestyle wasn't his long term goal, he would still try it for a few years for the experience then settle into something more stable.
Kagami, on the other hand, had one more year left in university, and was going to pursue a master's degree immediately after that. She had plans to work in her mother's company while simultaneously working her way up to being a world champion fencer.
They were really on two very different paths, but they had decided that just because they were different, doesn't mean that they had to be isolated from each other. So they decided, just like with their first date, that they would take things as they come, one step at a time.
"I love you," Luka suddenly blurted, "and I'm going to miss you."
Kagami flushed at this, even though it wasn't the first time she'd heard it, and it certainly wouldn't be the last. She turned about adjusted herself to be facing Luka directly. She saw that despite the peaceful atmosphere, he was looking a bit downcast.
"I love you too," she stroked his cheek in assurance. "I'll miss you too, but I'm going to talk to you everyday to the point where you'll get sick of me."
Luka smiled at this and drew closer. Bringing his face to hers to the point where their lips were almost touching.
"Impossible," he whispered before kissing her. "I'd never get sick of you."
Kagami eagerly reciprocated his kiss and thought to herself, If that's the case, we'd just have to stay together forever.
"Luka, I'm sick of this," Kagami's tense voice was just above a whisper.
"Kagami, I—"
"Come here. This ends now," she advanced menacingly towards Luka with a tie taut in her hands.
"No, wait, you're strangling me!" he protested as she looped the tie around his neck and pulled.
"Are you done yet?" Erin came in and asked. "The wedding's starting soon."
"All done!" Kagami took a step back from her boyfriend to admire how the tie he was wearing really pulled the whole suit ensemble together.
"Wow, I never imagined Luka would wear a tie," Hayate commented dryly. "Good job, Kagami," he gave her a thumbs up.
"Of course," Kagami returned the gesture despite Luka's grumblings. "There's no way he could go to Linda and Daniel's wedding without a tie."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Luka pouted, but still offered Kagami his arm. "We should've been in the chapel ten minutes ago." Kagami looped her arm through his ang gave him a soft smile in return.
Behind them, Hayate and Erin followed suit, whispering to each other.
"I give them two years after she graduates before it's their turn," Erin betted.
"Oh please," Hayate scoffed. "A year. Maybe eighteen months tops," he countered.
They both looked ahead to see Luka still fidgeting with his tie and Kagami swatting his hand away to leave it alone.
"Hmm, you maybe right on this one," Erin admitted, as they saw Luka press a mischievous kiss to Kagami's cheek.
Their comments, and the background chatter in the church was lost to the different melodies that sounded in the ears of the couple ahead of them. Each note distinct yet complementary; almost harmonising perfectly to create a brand new melody.
Fin.
