"He is going to know it was us," Eddie pointed out as he eyed the mansion before him. He wasn't sure how he even agreed to do this or why. As much as he hated the conformity Hawkins and most Americana towns thrived on, Eddie never really gave much thought to his peers after-school. Rallying them up during school hours was more for his amusement, but after school, he just wanted to play his guitar, listen to his music, and enjoy the good weed he kept for himself.
Besides, all those jocks with their preppy girlfriends loved throwing their parents' money at him to buy some weed. The hypocrisy of the situation wasn't lost on him.
Yet, he wasn't sure how in the hell he got roped into this little scheme.
He eyed his best friend, Jensen, who had this wicked gleam in her eyes as she eyed the pristine mansion. Jensen had been his friend since she and her step-sister, Max, had moved to town, going on close to two years ago from California. She was a year younger than him so they didn't have many classes together. Their friendship sprouted from their time at summer camp. Eddie would say that he fell in love right then and there, but he won't admit that aloud.
But since then, the two became inseparable. It was a common sight to find Eddie regaling her with a summary of the latest campaign while she practiced on her skateboard or rollerskates, sometimes with her little sister joining before she got annoyed by Eddie's "nerdiness".
Jensen opened the carton of eggs. She had bought four, and he lamented the waste. He rubbed his belly as cheesy scrambled eggs sounded good. He wondered if he could convince her to make some as payment for coming to do this for her.
Eddie opened his carton and grabbed an egg. "So you going to tell me what he did today?"
"It's just the sound of his voice is like nails to a chalkboard," Jensen replied.
Eddie sighed as he looked up at the dark sky as if an answer would rain down. He looked down at his friend, who was avoiding his gaze. "Jen?"
"Does he have to do a specific thing?"
Eddie frowned. The usual answer when it came to the likes of Jason Carver was him just breathing in their direction was irritation. Thankfully, he didn't share lunch or classes with Jason, although, with the way his grades were going, he might be repeating senior year once again. At the very least, Jensen and he would share classes. She did share classes with Jason. He heard a rumor when she first moved here that the boy asked her out before hooking up with Chrissy Cunningham.
Jensen would never confirm the rumor herself, but it would make sense as Jason and his friends that were in his grade had been more determined by trying to get a rile out of him.
Eddie licked his lips. He decided he wasn't going to push and prod. Besides, they didn't need to be out here longer and she would probably tell him if he promised to take her to get a milkshake after this.
"Ready?" she asked as they moved closer to the house. They had to be quick as there weren't many bushes or trees to get cover from.
Eddie nodded. She had braided his hair for him, matching her two French braids so his wavy mane wouldn't be as recognizable.
Jensen giggled and swung her arm up and threw the egg where it landed with a loud smack against the siding of the house. Eddie quickly threw his egg, and they decorated the back of the house.
"Jesus Christ, they must be hard sleepers," Jensen muttered as she finished her dozen.
"Do you want them to wake up?"
"I mean takes the thrill out of it a bit. I'm going to move to the front."
"What! No!" Eddie whispered harshly. They had agreed to only do the back of the house as they could dash into the neighbor's yard and escape to the woods. After all, they had parked his van a good bit of a distance away. The front neighbors could see and spot them.
"Relax, would you?" Jensen snorted. "Who knew you had such a stick up your ass?"
"Well, someone has to be the adult here!"
"Edward, I didn't know you were switching careers from a guitarist to a comedian," Jensen replied dryly.
Eddie glared at her.
"Besides, why in the hell would we do a half-assed job?"
Eddie bit his tongue as he followed her to the lawn. Again, the Carvers must be some deep sleepers because most of their eggs smacked against the windows.
"Hey!"
Both Eddie and Jensen jumped as they turned to the voice of a man standing in his bathrobe.
"Shit, is that Officer Callahan?" Jensen whispered.
"You two are in a load of trouble," the voice threatened.
Eddie looked at Jensen and with an egg in each hand, they threw it at who they presumed was Officer Callahan.
"You little shi -"
Jensen and Eddie booked it to the neighbor's yard and dashed into the woods. They could hear the moans and grumbles of Officer Callahan behind them as he tried to get a spotlight on him with the flashlight.
They kept running, and eventually, the light from the flashlight became faint. It was just their harsh breaths filling the air.
They eventually reach his van and immediately hopped in.
"Holy shit!" Eddie yelled while Jensen laughed.
"Dude, I think I'm scarred by Callahan in his boxers and robe."
"That's what you are worried about!"
Jensen rolled her eyes. "Relax. He didn't know it was us. Besides, it wasn't like he was going to arrest us."
"He could've," Eddie grumbled as he started his van.
. . .
Officer Callahan did visit his lovely trailer the following morning. It earned him a smack in the head from his uncle, who gave him an alibi.
Of course, Jason thought he and Jensen had done it and it did not surprise him to find his van egged after school on Monday.
On Tuesday, Jensen smashed eggs in Jason's locker coating his letterman jacket, which earned her detention.
