After Subaru's introduction, everyone was silent. After all, with Puck confirming everything he said to be true, it was even more shocking. Add to the fact that he literally proved all of them wrong by showing them his Super Form.
After a good few moments of processing everything, Emilia spoke.
"I-I see. But if you come from a different world, then how did you get here...?"
Emilia asked as Subaru sighed.
"You see, that's the thing. I don't know, all I remember was fighting my biggest enemy, Eggman or Dr. Ivo Robotnik. He's a scientist that's been trying to take over the world ever since I first stopped him. We've been going against each other since day one. But anyway, I fought him and managed to retrieve the emeralds from him, his shuttle was going to self destruct or in other words...explode. I used Chaos Control to escape before the place blew up...and I ended up here...in the capital. I ended up going to Kararagi there and that's where I met Zarestia. The point is, something or someone messed with my Chaos Control."
Subaru stated as he sat back down next to his contracted spirit, Zarestia. As Zarestia herself had her eyes closed as she already knew the story.
"I-I see."
Emilia stated as she now understood Subaru's situation a little bit.
"I...never thought I'd be doubt my own powers one day. But he has been nothing but truthful this entire time. About everything!"
Puck commented
"S-So, you are...far away from home huh? From your friends and family-"
Emilia tried to console the boy, only to be interrupted by her sponsor.
"And I suppose you're currently looking for a waaaaaaaaaay home are you not? Subaru~kun?"
Roswaal asked
"Well yeah, that's the plan. I already have a few ideas in mind. But aside from that, I should really get going. After everything that has happened I don't think I'd want to be in the same building with the maids who tried to murder me."
Subaru stated as he began to turn around and leave.
Ram visibly flinched while Rem slightly glared.
"You heard him, we'll finally be out of this place. Dealing with those maids for even one more second made me annoyed."
"Don't worry Tia. We won't have to deal with them anymore. So that's a good thing right?"
"I suppose..."
Roswaal then began to speak in hopes of persuading Subaru and his spirit to reconsider.
"Then what about thiiiiiiiiiisss? I still owe you for helping Emilia-sama after all."
Roswaal paused as Subaru kept walking.
"Work as Emilia-sama's bodyguard, and in return, I'll fund all of your projects!"
He concluded with a smile.
"Roswaal-sama?!"
Rem asked, shocked as to why her lord would offer such a luxurious offer to such a suspicious man.
"He is a stranger! Even if all he says is true then-!"
"Rem...this is a sensible choice."
Ram interjected her sister's train a thought.
"Nee-sama?! But why?!"
"Because...so long as he needs to create stuff or find ways for him to go back home, he will create items that the kingdom could benefit from."
The elder sister pointed out.
'It's not like I want to help your kingdom. Not after what I've seen...false knights holding some false code of chivalry...'
Subaru thought in disgust at Ram's words.
"Surely you've noticed...the peculiarity of his metia, more specifically, his footwear. And Beatrice-sama confirmed that his gate is unused, so his powers don't seem to work based on mana. It's not magic nor a divine protection as what he just demonstrated to us. And his speed seems to not be based around mana as well, almost as if it's just his pure physical speed. The things he uses are technology beyond what we currently understand. Or things magic cannot explain."
"The technological advancement of the kingdom could improve Emilia-sama's standing with the citizens quite draaaaaaastically! Surely you realize the advantages a man like Subaru~kun brings to the table, don't you? Emilia~sama?"
The lord suggested with an ear to ear smile.
"And while working on his projects he could work protecting you as well! You do indeed, lack a knight. And he has proven to have the skills to qualify. We wouldn't want anymore situations where your life is attempted against, hmmm?"
Roswaal asked as Emilia looked to be in thought.
(Well no shit you damn clown, you're the one who hired Elsa in the first place)
"T-The decision falls on Subaru...he's the one that..."
Emilia meekly muttered as she felt angry with herself. The reason being that she wanted to repay Subaru for helping her by bringing him to her home, the Roswaal Mansion. Only to find out that the two maids Ram and Rem, attempted to murder him while he was asleep. And they greatly offended Zarestia as Zarestia was very pissed off to where she nearly killed them for it. She also hated the fact that she couldn't reign them in. But aside from that, she was a royal candidate yet...Roswaal was able to formulate multiple ways to help out Subaru than she could in a instant.
She wanted to make sure to punish them later but she lacked the resolve to do that. She lacked any leadership as she tried to let Subaru make the choice on the matter.
"Subaru is the one that should choose what his reward should be..."
Subaru stopped with his hand on the door handle. And his mental state wasn't really in the best state right now. The morning started out on a bad start due to his confrontation with the murderous pair of maids, he was completely arrogant when he confronted them and he would admit that he was rightfully aggressive towards them. He later on told them his origins and even showed them his Super Form. He was quite worried...
'I mean...it wouldn't be so bad if those two maids weren't involved...but I guess I could take up the offer since Zarestia will be here as well. But on another note, I told them about the Chaos Emeralds...and I even showed them my Super Form. I cant trust them to not end up spreading this knowledge...so the best course of action would be to accept being Emilia's bodyguard. Being a G.U.N. Agent has its perks since I was a bodyguard before.'
Subaru breathed.
"Alright...I'll accept your deal Roswaal."
"W-What?! But Subaru! They-!"
"I know Zarestia. But it's as I said before, if they try anything again, then I won't hesitate to defend myself."
Subaru stated as he glared at the maids. The maid sisters sweated a bit seeing Subaru glaring right at them. It was like he was glaring right through their souls.
"I want to get this out of the way before those two even try to give me a tour. Roswaal, you want to talk about my position but I think we should talk about their positions. They are your maids correct? You should learn to keep them in check, otherwise things may not end so well like they did today."
Subaru stated as he spoke to the clown, his glare still on his face.
"I understand your concerns Subaru~kun but-"
Zarestia interrupted the clown.
"I hope you don't plan for them to go unpunished Clown, they attempted to kill my contractor. And they don't even seem remorseful about it!"
Zarestia added as she glared at the maids, fierce winds appearing around her. While Rem and Ram sported indifferent faces to her reaction, further infuriating Zarestia as the winds grew more fierce due to her fury.
Their demeanor, however, shifted into slight panic when some of the items began to have marks on them. More specifically on the table where they were standing.
"I must agree Roswaal."
Puck surprisingly assisted the duo in a serious tone, now floating his way towards Emilia.
"From one spirit and contractor to another, attacking a spirit's contractor is a great offense to the spirit and contractor. You can't go around ignoring what your servants did, as if it didn't mean anything."
Puck stated.
"Well of course. I think the decision falls upon the victim as well."
Roswaal stated in a indifferent tone. His funny accent no longer present as he spoke.
"Roswaal-sama, if I may, nee-sama and I-"
Rem attempted to protest.
"...If it is Roswaal-sama's wish, then we won't protest."
Ram concluded as she interrupted her sister.
Rem cut her claims short at her sister's interruption. She looked resentful for a few moments as she hoped her sister was aware of her current feelings on the matter due to their synethesia. But Ram chose their lord's judgment instead of hers. It was the logical answer to their situation, obviously. But Rem's wrath and hatred for the otherworldly boy just couldn't allow her to think straight.
"It's Subaru's decision then. I know my idiot contractor will make the right choice regarding their punishment."
"..."
Subaru was silent as he thought about what he should do.
'Should I let them go unpunished...? On one hand, I could easily punish them with my choice alone, and on another hand, I could let it slide and give them one more chance not to fuck up.'
Subaru thought to himself as he looked at the maids until he finally made his decision. These maids were nothing but ants compared to the stuff he went through on the daily. He would make sure to personally punish them himself if they even tried to kill him or attack him again.
"I guess I can let it go. But if they try anything against me again. Then I will personally punish them. That's a promise."
Zarestia said nothing as she nodded her head. She was accepting her contractors decision. He gave them a chance to prove themselves and see if they could change. If they messed it up then he would personally punish them. And she herself would love nothing more than to just cut them up. But she would leave it all in her idiotic contractor's hands.
"S-Subaru, are you sure you want to let it go?"
Emilia asked as Subaru nodded his head.
"Yeah. Besides, they're nothing but ants compared to the people and deities I faced in the past. There were many people that tried to kill me, mainly Eggman. But my point is, that these two are no different and are nothing compared to them. Two idiot maids are nothing I can't handle."
Subaru stated as he got up and leaned on the wall.
"Thank you, Barusu-!"
"His name is Subaru, MAID!"
Zarestia interrupted the pink maid as she glared.
"...Subaru."
Ram bowed, thanking the G.U.N. Agent sincerely for sparring them the consequences of her sister's rashness.
"...Thank you, Subaru-sama."
Rem reluctantly thanked Subaru while bowing as well, but she said every word laced with venom.
"...Be grateful I'm giving you a chance to prove I can trust you. Don't mess it up. And aside from that, we're...co-workers now, so it'll be best to clear out any bad blood between us."
Subaru responded as he was visibly tired of the whole ordeal.
"Alright then. Subaru, we'll talk later. And you two...I invited him here because he saved me. Don't ever try anything like that, ever again."
Emilia warned the maids in a serious tone.
"We won't, Emili-sama."
Ram replied professionally.
With that, Emilia took her leave, which was followed by Beatrice and Puck, who was in the rude loli's hands once more.
"Well theeeeeen, Ram, Rem, please show our new employee around!"
Roswaal directed from his seat as he stood up from his seat while clapping his hands.
"I did say you would work as a bodyguard and inventor for Emilia-sama's benefit, but would you mind assisting on the household chores as well? You could use the chance to break the animosity between my staff and yourself."
"Sure thing, after all, with what I've been told and seen. Rem is the only one that actually does the work around here. I can only assume Ram is just lazy, so I'd guess I'd feel bad for not helping."
Subaru stated nonchalantly, not noticing the glare Ram was giving him while Zarestia snickered.
"Humph, don't go around thinking you'll be anything but deadweight on your first day, trashy Barusu."
Ram mocked back.
"Trashy Barusu-?!"
Subaru had to hold Zarestia back.
"I-It's fine Tia! And Ram, we'll see. The one thing I will never be, is deadweight, but let's see if you can keep up."
As the two bickered back and forth, they didn't notice Rem looking at the interaction, feeling nothing but spite for the young man interacting with her sister as though they were already familiar with each other.
As the twin maids gave Subaru and Zarestia a tour around the mansion, Rem kept giving Subaru side glances as Subaru and Zarestia obviously noticed this.
'How cute. She thinks she's slick. It's kinda laughable, is she really not going to consider my warning?'
Subaru thought to himself as a streak of blue and red electricity appeared around Subaru's forearm as it disappeared as quickly as it showed up.
(Yeah, I'm giving him the lightning as well. I like the Sonic movies. And Frontiers does this as well)
Eventually, they made it into the dressing room so that way, they could take Subaru's measurements. But Zarestia obviously declined as she didn't trust the maids and she would rather have Subaru make her clothes since Subaru is very good at knitting.
"Alright, do you promise you won't choke me with that thing-GHK!"
Subaru's question was interrupted by measuring tape suddenly surrounding his neck as he was strangled by the blue maid.
"Please stay still Subaru-sama, I can't properly take your measurements if you move so much."
"What the hell do you think you're doing maid?!"
Zarestia asked in fury.
"I'm simply taking his measurements, Great Spirit-sama."
Rem then whipped Subaru across the back as he recoiled.
"Straighten your posture, you are slouching. We have a lot to do today. Just because you aren't a butler, it does not mean you don't get your fair share of household activities."
"Barusu, if you're done complicating my sisters job, I suggest you stay quiet and let her take your measurements."
Subaru looked back in mild rage and annoyance as blue,red, and black streaks of lightning crackled around him.
"The hell do you mean 'complicating'?! Your sister is trying to- OW!"
Rem mercilessly slapped his lower back.
"You damn maid!!"
Zarestia was just about to cut Rem in pieces, but Subaru told her it was fine and that they needed to get this out of the way.
Zarestia grumbled as she leaned on the wall, keeping a good eye on the maids and her contractor.
"Look, the quicker we fix an outfit fitting your job, the quicker we can get back to doing actual work, Subaru-sama."
Rem stated as she checked Subaru's measurements.
"What do you mean an outfit that matches the job? My suit is good enough for that!"
"Your weird suit are battered and dirty, not to mention ugly. You represent Emilia-sama now, and by extension Roswaal-sama as well. As such, you need clothes that denote such an honor, Barusu."
Ram replied, not caring for the complaints of the G.U.N. Agent.
"Ok firstly, I'd rather drown then represent that clown. And secondly, how dare you?! My suit, my shoes, my items. This is state of the art G.U.N. technology you just insulted and that I created myself! They're probably worth MILLIONS back in my home. You can't find these anywhere else, especially my air-shoes!"
Ram sighed.
"Fine, state-of-the-art ugly then."
"You little-!!!!"
Subaru had to hold back the very urge to not just slam her on the ground and "Chaos Blast" this arrogant maid into oblivion. He knew that would cause problems in the future if he really did that.
"Alright look. My clothes and items are nothing you or ANYONE here aside from Zarestia understand, if anything I'm more advanced than you lot, so try to get your small brain to process it."
Subaru stated as he mocked Ram back.
Ram looked visibly irked, she made sure she would get him for this.
"Regardless, poor Ram and Rem have neither the time nor business in dealing with your flawed sense of style. Hurry up and let's get back to work."
"Whatever..."
Subaru stated as he rubbed his lower back.
"You are very muscular for how lanky you look. But your legs are short and your eyes are scary, you really do look better in that ugly outfit of yours."
Rem chimed in after finishing her measurements.
"Oh shut up you! Do you really have to keep pointing out these kinds of things at every turn?! My eyes came from my mother, I can't do anything about it so don't mock them!"
Subaru stated as Zarestia hugged Subaru as his face was shoved in between her breast as she herself was unaware of it.
"Yeah! My contractor is quite handsome! He had tons of women swooning over him back in Kararagi! And aside from that, the female clothing seems to oddly fit him..."
"Hah! I should have expected Barusu's degeneracy, to want to dress in female clothing. Heh!"
Subaru quickly pulled his head out of Zarestia's breast as he breathed for air and turned towards the maid twins.
"Oh you two are having a blast doing this aren't you?! I haven't even wore female clothing and I'm still getting mocked for cross-dressing!"
Subaru stated as he shook in slight anger.
"For the time being, I'll hand you a shirt and jacket that fit you somewhat. We have a lot to do today, so get ready."
"Yeah! Yeah! Whatever!"
After Subaru changed into the clothes handed to him, he made sure to put all of his objects, like for example, his gun that only had a few bullets left in his arsenal as well as all of his other objects. He wasn't letting anything out of his sight, and of course, he still had his air-shoes as well. Once he was done, he and Zarestia walked into the hallway where the two maid twins waited with unamused faces.
As they strolled down the corridor, though not alerting to danger, Subaru's ear twitched as he also sensed something. He turned to his left as he was face to face with the bathroom door as he quickly opened it.
Inside, he didn't see a toilet or a sink, but a pair of two great spirits playing together in the old library.
"Uhhhh...what the hell did I just walk in on...?"
Subaru stated confused.
Zarestia walked in and saw the sight and she must admit. It was cute.
"You're so great, Bubby! Your fur is the best!"
The blond drill loli stated as she nuzzled her cheek against Puck's while laying in the bed. But she instantly stopped the moment she noticed Subaru and Zarestia watching them.
"Don't worry, I won't tell a soul about this. If anything, it's actually kinda funny to see you playing like the little girl you are-WHOAH?!
Subaru literally dodged a gust of wind by going into ball form and quickly rolled out of the way towards Zarestia as he uncurled and went back to normal.
"Don't dodge it! Get out, in fact!"
"I wager it's better if you listen to Betty on this one Subaru."
Puck suggested.
(Fuck you Puck)
"Alright fine, jeez...you could've said it more politely though."
Subaru and Zarestia left the room, closing the door behind them. And immediately after doing that, Subaru walked right back in, revealing the same scenario he had seen previously.
"That's actually pretty impressive."
Puck pointed out with surprise seeing Subaru again so quickly.
"How do you keep doing that, I suppose?!"
"I have sharp senses so something like this is easy. Also you never really told me about this forbidden library."
"...You'll be working here from now on. You have the right to know, I suppose."
It was then that Beatrice began to explain what the Forbidden Library was. She explained that the library contains magical knowledge worth four hundred years, and that she was the great spirit contracted with overseeing it. It was then that Ram had chimed in and explained that Roswaal descends from the line of the greatest court mages in the history of the kingdom. As such, he possesses knowledge that should not be seen by others.
Zarestia mused with interest while Subaru thought about her the words Beatrice said to him.
"Now that you have satisfied your curiosity, leave."
As Beatrice said this, she shot out a gust of wind but still didn't managed to hit Subaru as he simply grabbed Zarestia and teleported out of the way as Beatrice grumbled in anger.
"Man...she could've just asked us to leave politely."
Subaru said as he leaned on a wall next to Zarestia.
"I'm rather impressed with how fast it took you to find Beatrice-sama's door. Usually, it takes us opening every door in the mansion to find her."
"Well they don't call me the "Fastest Thing Alive" for nothing. And it's as I said, I have sharp senses. So you mean to tell me that you have to open EVERY door in this mansion just to find Beatrice? Is her library like some sort of pocket dimension or something?"
Subaru asked as he wondered if it was like the "Special Zones" back at home.
"I don't know the exact details; those are pieces of information available only to Roswaal-sama and Beatrice-sama. But if I had to say, yes."
"Huh, neat. It reminds me of the special zones back in my world!"
Rem and Ram both looked at Subaru in confusion at the term. As they both didn't know what a "Special Zone" was to begin with. So they dismissed simply it and continued on with what they had to do.
"Well aside from your weird ramblings Barusu, it's time I explained your job. For the moment, you will be helping me out with my duties today, as a way to familiarize yourself with the mansion. These duties include tending to the gardens, preparing lunch and polishing of the tableware."
"Wow, that sounds-"
"Airing out the blankets, laundry, bathroom duties and the monthly soot cleaning."
"Please tell me that's it..."
The group then moved onto the garden, and as Ram began to make a mess of the bushes, her sister, Rem somehow make it look like there was nothing wrong with the bush in the first place. Zarestia didn't want to help them as she still didn't trust them, but she did say she would help air out the blankets and laundry with her wind magic the moment they got to it.
So for now, Subaru decided that he would at least help with the branches as he began hovering in the air with his air shoes as he started tending to the tree branches.
"Barusu really is a creep, floating near the walls like that. It wouldn't do for Emilia-Dana's new bodyguard to spy on her poor servants through the window while they change clothes."
Ram joked at his expense once more.
"Always straight to the point huh? It kinda hurts and annoys me that you would degrade my equipment and abilities to "voyeuristic tendencies". And it's not like I could ever be attracted to you to begin with."
Subaru stated as he went back to trimming the branches.
"That's right, considering what you two attempted to do against him last night, I wouldn't dare be attracted to the likes of you maids either. You're lucky I'm even tolerating you for Subaru's sake."
Zarestia stated as she looked at the pair while laying on the tree her contractor was currently tending to.
"...On the topic of that, I am genuinely grateful you did not choose to punish us. I mean it."
All of a sudden, Ram's demeanor turned serious.
"I still have to wonder, however is, why? You can't seriously expect me or Rem to believe that you spared us all because of a misunderstanding. Now that neither Emilia-sama or Roswaal-sama are listening, would you mind giving us an actual reason?"
At this point, Subaru was done with his part of the chores as he was now relaxing on a tree. As a butterfly was all of a sudden, resting on his nose as he looked completely relaxed.
"It's as I said before Pinky, you nor your sister are not special for trying to kill me. As I stated, I dealt with bigger threats to where you two are just like ants compared to them. Eggman, Chaos, the Time Eater, The End, etc."
"But you should have pushed for the punishment regardless."
Rem stated while gazing intently at him.
"...You cooled off already, Rem-Rin?"
Subaru joked while still talking in a serious tone as he still looked completely relaxed.
"Now Zarestia would have pushed for the punishment and I would have done the same under any normal circumstances but that's not the case here. If this was my world, you would have been in prison for attempted murder, probably even worse for attacking a G.U.N. Agent. But this isn't my world, so things are different here, so all I can really do is just try and show you how wrong your judgement was and hope you don't go all trigger happy in the future. So be lucky I'm even giving you a chance not to screw it up."
Subaru stated as he looked at Rem with one eye closed.
"I see..."
Rem responded as she turned away from him mulled over what Subaru had told her.
"I say we're finished with the garden, so let's move on to the kitchen."
Ram added, trying to prevent the mood from dropping.
"Hah! Bold of you to say WE are finished, you just made more work for- HEY!"
Subaru dodged a branch thrown at him by the Pink Oni maid.
"My apologies, Barusu. I just saw an insect I deemed worthy of smiting. Were you saying something just now?"
"...Nope."
Subaru replied as he once again, had to hold back the urge to Chaos Blast this Pink maid to oblivion.
As Subaru hopped down from the tree branch and landed next to Zarestia as they both followed the maids to do whatever chores they had left, someone was watching them from above. The woman had long silver hair and pointy ears as she watched.
Emilia thought to herself.
'How can you be so carefree around those two when they tried to kill you...?'
Emilia couldn't make out their conversation but she could see how relaxed Subaru was. Subaru and Zarestia saved her life, and she wanted to repay them by bringing the pair to the mansion, her home. So when she found out that the very people she trusted tried to bash his head in earlier, it infuriated her to no end.
While Emilia was thinking about all of this, Subaru and Zarestia were with the maids preparing lunch. When Ram asked him if he knew how to peel a Tato, he replied with "Don't you mean Potato?"
And Ram simply responded with him not knowing the names of vegetables. From then on, Subaru learned about what the people of this world call vegetables and other things compared to the stuff in his world.
"Uh...at least tell me you don't cook on hearths or something."
"Of course we don't."
Rem stated as she began to boil water in a pot.
"We have stoves, we aren't savages. We just have to ignite it with the fire pyroxenes of the metias for it to work."
"Fire Pyroxenes?"
Subaru questioned.
"We don't really have those back where I'm from. We have gas powered stoves. Or even portable stoves, that you can use whenever you go camping."
"Portable Stove?"
Rem questioned.
"You don't have those? Well, that's the first thing I'll introduce to your world and maybe some other foods from my world if you guys have the ingredients. Also, can I keep this? I want to see if I can do anything with it."
"Just don't get yourself killed with it, moron."
Ram said as she looked at him.
"Yeah, Yeah..."
Subaru replied as he put the fire pyroxene in his pocket.
After preparing lunch and doing many other chores with the maids, it seemed that Subaru and Zarestia seemed to gain their trust a bit. It was now near the end of the day as it was sun down. They were now outside as Subaru passed his jacket to Rem so she could add some adjustments later as he plopped on the grass in the front yard of the mansion.
"I hope you enjoyed the tour around the mansion. Even if you ended up tired as the weakling you are."
Ram teased Subaru as she smirked.
Zarestia sighed.
"He's not tired, it's more like he's exasperated. He just can't believe how this entire place can be looked after by two people."
Zarestia stated as she placed Subaru's head on her lap and played with his hair.
"But even then maid, didn't I tell you to cease with the insults towards my contractor?"
"It's fine Tia...she's only messing around. And besides, today was fun. And I hoped you two managed to at least trust me."
Subaru said as he looked at the maids and stood up.
"Anyway, it's been a day and I need to get ready for tomorrow. So I'll catch you two later!"
Subaru stated as he picked up Zarestia and carried her like a princess as he began revving his feet up in a circular motion as his legs looked like an infinity sign and speed off, catching the two maids by surprise as they never seen anyone move their legs like that.
"Y-You...Y-You...IDIOT!!!"
Zarestia screamed out all flustered as the two maids watched the spirit and contractor speed into the mansion in a good few seconds.
"He's fast."
Ram stated as Rem nodded.
"So what do you think now?"
Ram asked Rem.
"I-I don't know."
Rem meekly responded.
"From what I can tell, he's just a very powerful and oddly good person, and from his story and the stuff he showed us, as well as Puck-sama and Beatrice-sama's confirmation. Then he might actually be a grander-than-life person, but...that stench around him...it scares me, sister. It brings up memories I'd rather forget..."
"...Maybe there is another explanation or reason for the smell? It could be that he has encountered a cultist beforehand without even knowing it. If he did come from the great waterfall, who is to say that a loathsome Witch Cultist did not cross it as well?"
Ram stated with her own theory.
"Yes but...If the implication is that he is not a cultist, then all I've been doing up until now would have been..."
Rem hesitated.
"You're afraid of admitting that you threatened an innocent man?"
"...I'm afraid of the implication of what it means for me to threaten an innocent man while knowing he's innocent."
Rem admitted with a worried and guilty expression.
"It would be better if you just apologized. Then, you could cut the cold facade short."
"Nee-sama..."
Rem uttered while laying her head on Ram's shoulder as Ram patted her head.
