Chapter 9: Knight's Plan

Sunday, October 2, 1983

Las Vegas

10:17

~Mr. Knight~

Ron, one of Mr. Knight's workers was sneaking around the building. Mr. Knight watches as he pulls out a Nikon. Taking a picture of the first stage of the razer grill cover for his truck to destroy the Knight imposter.

*Click* sound from the Nikon and Mr. Knight turns and points to Ron. "Grab him."

Ron ran through the building heading for his truck. Getting to his truck he tossed the Nikon inside the truck. He just manages to close the door when the big guy opened it back up.

Grabbing Ron, he tossed him onto the ground. Ron looks at the man with fear and said "C10, Homestead Protocol."

The big guy launched himself at the truck's door, but it slammed shut. The truck took off ramming through the large commercial chain link fence. *Whoomph* echoes of the hills as the truck is struck by a Shock Pulls Shell shorting out all its electronics. It came to stop by hitting a boulder.

Mr. Knight walked up to Ron still lying on the ground. He pointed his gun at Ron and said, "I would ask who you work for, but the HGI C10 truck is answer enough.

*Bang, Bang* "Get rid of the body." The big guy steps over to the dead man, "What about the truck?"

"Have it dragged into that empty hanger at the edge of the field. Do not drive it there, we are not ready to deal with K.A.R.R."

Mr. Knight heads inside the building to finish overseeing the construction of his weapon to take back his legacy.

Las Vegas

22:18

Rita paced back and forth; her brother should have been home nearly three hours ago. His office phone keeps going to the answering machine.

Grabbing the key to the jeep she heads out the door. Rita was being cautious as she drove to the outback shack they set up as a rendezvous location. Turning the jeep off she walked around to the back of the.

*Tick, Tick, Clink, Tick, Tick, Clink* sound was coming from inside the shack. Rita opened the wooden side door silently. A blast of heat and white smoke rolled out of the door.

The inside of the shack was filled with white smoke. Closing the door behind her, she turns on the flashlight.

The beam fell onto a Nevada sand color 1980 Chevy C10 with white smoke rolling out of its engine bay. The ticking sound was from the colling of its exposed and the coolant leaking onto the hot frame.

Rita ran over to the C10 and grabbed the handle. *Oww* she jerked her hand back the handle was extremely hot to the touch like it had been out in the Nevada heat all day.

Walking around the shack she grabs a rag from the bench on the other side of the C10.

Turning back, she sees the black marks with a lightning tree pattern. That spread from the passenger side of the bed near the cab where it seemed to jump to the cab. It continued to the fender, ending with another black mark right at the strut,

Rita when back to the driver's door and used the rag to lift the handle, It was locked of course. "Of course, you are locked. C10, Rita Wilcox, operator two override door locks."

Nothing happened, the truck remained locked. "C10, operation status." still nothing happened. Rita did not have a phone available to call Grace to get her help with C10.

She walked back and forth thinking about what her brother said about the C10's functions and how to override them.

Suddenly stopping she when over to the Chevy badge on the front of the truck. With the rag she grabbed the badge, pulled it out and rotate it clockwise 90 degrees. One of the grill fins popped open to the right of the badge. Flipping it out of the way there was a small keypad.

With hope, she pushes the * and hears a small *beep*. Hitting # to clear the codes she hits, 0011980*1959# The code was just the C10 unit number, build year, and birth year of its operator.

All the doors click to unlock. "Yes." With the rag she opens the driver door. The truck was empty. The only thing out of place in the truck was the Nikon camera on the passenger floor.

Knowing that the metal camera would be too hot to touch as well, Rita pulled the hood latch. Getting out she opens the hood to let the steam out of the engine bay.

02:10

After four hours to let the truck cool down, Rita sat in the passenger seat pulling out the glove box to reveal a large keyboard with a small terminal screen. Double taping ESC, the screen came on displaying.

Rita began typing in commands.

The light on the center of the dash began to come on as the C10 begins its symptom check. The lines of code going down the terminal were too quick for Rita to understand.

"C10 where is my brother?" There was no response from the truck. "C10 what is the status of operator 1?"

A message appears on the radio screen, 'Offlined, deceased, murdered.'

Rita began to cry; her brother was dead. "What is your course mission?

'Homestead Protocol, Protect Operator two.'

"Ok, first can you access your emergency beacon, I do not know how to fix you."

'Yes'

"Well get them to send you a transport so you can help me avenge my brother."

'Emergency beacon activated.'

Hargon Industries Airfield

02:15

A.R.I.A. pickup C10_001 emergency beacon. Narrowing down its location to a spot in the Nevada outback. She activated the alarm bells in the warehouse that housed the RAVEN and its crew.

The pilot picks up the phone in the room. "What is the emergency?" she asked while pulling on a G-Suit.

P: "One of our specialist vehicles, C10-001 has activated its emergency beacon. The vehicle has sent me its status. An infantry team and maintenance crew will joy you. The RAVEN is being prepped to pick up the C10 and loaded with fuel."

"Ok, on my way out." Hanging up the phone she marched out of her room. She did not mind these sudden emergency deployments. To be a female pilot was difficult and they did not make much. At Hargon Industries if you had the skill and could prove it, you got the job and the pay.

Getting to the transport vehicle that would take her to the jet carrier she was assigned to fly. She was not allowed to fly the Trigon RAY because of its different flight controls. The same applied to its pilot, he could not fly her jet either.

"Morning Captain." said her copilot. "Morning Teana, do you have our flight plan from A.R.I.A.?"

"No, she is still working on finding clear airways over Las Vegas. Said she will send it to the fax machine on the RAVEN."

"Ok, let's get on board and start the pre-flight." Forklifts were loading crates full of parts for the C10's engine. Two barrels were being loaded onto the plane and a roll of something.

Teana pointed at the barrels and roll. "What is that?" One of the mechanics spoke. "That roll is the skin for the C10, and the barrels contain the Mimetic material."

02:45

The RAVEN parked on the runway. "I'm all green here, Teana."

"All green here, flight plan imputed, ready for take-off."

"Alert the crew."

Teana picks up the intercom. "Attention crew lift-off in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1."

Pushing the throttle, the RAVEN used its four vertical thrusters to lift-off the ground. At 600 feet the Captain said. "Redirect flow one."

The front two vertical thrusters closed redirecting the thrust out of the back outer thrusters. Moving forward it turned for its heading. "Redirect flow two."

The rear verticals closed sending the thruster power to all rear thrusters.

The RAVEN launched forward climbing to 60,000 feet.

Getting to 60,000 feet the RAVEN accelerates to Mach 2.1 (1,611 Mph). It has a top crew speed of Mach 2.5 (1,918 Mph) and a no-crew speed of Mach 3.0 (2,301 Mph).

Nevata, Homestead

03:10

Rita was sleeping in C10, after trying to understand all the computer's diagnostic codes.

The rumbling of a jet engine woke her up along with the sound of sand hitting the shack.

Rita reached to open the door when it locked and C10's engine began to make a grinding noise as it tried to start. "C10, What are you doing, your engine is in no condition to start."

No message pops up on the screen as it struggles to stay running, as more errors popped up on the terminal. "C10, stop that, do not make me shut you down."

'Protect operator two' Flashed on the screen as people in tactical gear and rifles entered the shack.

One of the men in gear pointed his gun at Rita through the window saying. "Step out of the truck." Rita's heart rate increased and she ducked down crying.

The man steps over with a gun and reaches for the driver's door handle. A female voice spoke with command. "STOP. do not touch the truck. According to A.R.I.A., C10's offensive and mobility are offline, but its defensive measures are not. I am sure if you touch that handle you will wake up on a stretcher with medics looking over you."

"Yes, Captain." Rita looks at this woman in a strange uniform that did not match what the riflemen had on.

'C10 dash 001, I know from this status report that your vocalizer is not operational and your external bio verifier is offline. Please blink your light or something if you can hear me?"

C10 blinked its right headlight. "Good, C10 code I.N.D.E.X."

The C10 flashes both its headlights and a new message appeared on the terminal

'Confirm I.N.D.E.X.'

"Mis, What did C10 say?"

"C10 said Confirm I.N.D.E.X. What is I.N.D.E.X.?"

"It means Identify Name Designation Emergence. C10, I'm Captain Serena Right, assigned to the RAVEN."

The screen changed to display an image of Caption Right and her employment record for Hargon Industries. A voice analyzer bar showed on the screen but C10 did not have a certified file to match too. 'Vocal match unavailable."

"Um, Captain C10 said vocal match unavailable."

"I figured that would happen the C10 does not have the memory to house all employee voiceprints. Grace, it is safe for you to come in."

Another woman enters the shack she had a muscular build and looked to Rita like a farm girl.

"C10, this I.N.D.E.X. stuff is nonsense, you know it Grace so open up your hood and let's get started."

The terminal said, 'Voice Print Matched' The hood of the truck popped open and the Grace women ordered people to bring in crates through the large doors that let C10 enter the shack.

Rita saw Captain Right hands Grace the clipboard she had when she entered the shack.

Rita tried the door again but it would not unlock. "C10, could you unlock the doors now."

Grace must have heard, she spoke. "It will not do that until it can confirm all our identity. I'm working on restoring C10's external bio verifier."

Sighing, she sat there and waited for Grace to finish fixing C10.

03:40

"Ok, I'm done with the engine, bio scanner, and secondary power distribution module. C10, I need you to do a full reboot to take you out of safety mode."

`The terminal changed to display.

C10_001/reboot

Status: Operator Confirm Reboot Y/N

C10_001/reboot/

Rita typed 'Y' and hit enter. It did not take long for C10 to reboot into normal mode. The terminal begins to go through a full diagnostic.

The external sectors were back online and the C10 used them to scan all the people around its frame.

The bio-data, C10 used is based on professional front and back photos of people. These photos take up very little data versus voiceprints that use a high-quality recording to not get fooled by a tape recording.

Only high-level employees, operators, and head mechanics have voiceprints stored in C10's memory.

Everyone in the shack was recognized as Hargon Industries employees. "Now that you can see us and verify our identity, I would like to start on your Mimetic Armor. I can see something fried the Mesh skin. C10, unlock armor section D4 to D12."

A seam opens from the center of the right fender back to the door edge near the bed. Grace slides the Amor panel back and out of the slide lock tabs. This would have been impossible if C10 did not use A.I.M.S. to unlock the panels first.

After the sensors came back online Rita was able to open the door and step out of C10. "What are you doing?" She asked Grace, who was pulling back a black tarp-looking material under the armor.

Grace continued pulling back the material as she said. "You must be this C10's operator, what is your name?"

"It's Rita Wilcox and your Grace?"

Rita waited for Grace to give her full name, but she did not. "Yes, I'm one of Hargon Industries' engineers and innovators. I specialize in energy conversion, on how to improve it. I actually invented this Mimetic Mesh Armor. It did not work for the K.A.R.R. of the future but innovation has its ups and downs."

"That is amazing, do you know what could have caused this damage? I was told C10 could take damage that a normal truck could not."

"I was hoping you could tell me. This is the first C10 and the Mimetic Mesh Armor is a prototype version of the kinetic damping armor. The outer panels are made to pull material in when hit by small caliber rounds. It looks like an artillery shell hit the armor, judging by the indent in this panel."

Grace ran her hand over the panel still attached to the bedside. "These markings could only be made by a high electric charge traveling through the skin. The Mimetic Armor could not compensate for the charge and when into a stasis lock."

"What would that do?"

"In stasis lock, the Armor would not act like a fluid when C10 shorted out. If it had stayed fluid, it would have slid off the panels like tree sap on a hot day."

Grace was looking over the skin when the Captain Right came over to Rita. "Mis Wilcox, did you activate the emergency beacon?"

"Yes, I told C10 to activate it when I realized I had no clue on how to fix its engine or Armor."

"You did the right thing, as you may have noticed we take an emergency beacon very seriously. Sorry for the infirmity scaring you. I would normally ask all the reasons you activated it but I can even see the damage done to C10-001."

"What, you think i would active an emergency beacon for a flat tire or something."

The Captain gave her a skeptical look. "If you are not aware there are three of these C10s. 001 is here, 002 is owned by Crystal, Alex's godchild and she loves that truck. 003 is operated by a specialist whose wife calls an emergency every time she drives the is why we mobilized so fast, 001 and 002 never send an emergency signal.

"Rita, I have finished what I can here. The point of impact is more damaged than the diagnostic sheet said. To do the fix, I need to take C10 to one of our facilities equipped with a three-dimensional scanner. The good news is we have one near here at our aerial testing field."

"Ok, I'm going with you." The Captain just shrugged. "Ok let's get it loaded up."

Rita follows them out of the shack. "Load up?" she asked just as she saw the massive wings of a cargo jet. The belly of the jet was dropped down to unload the parts for C10.

As Rita stepped farther away from the shack the sound of a smooth engine started up. Grace's voice came from inside the Shack, "C10, wait let me get the door for you."

Grace opens both of the doors to let C10 back out of the space to drive as quietly as it could over to Rita.

"Oh, Captain Right could you get someone to hide my jeep in the shack?"

The Captain nodded her head as Rita handed her the keys to the jeep.

04:00

Getting the RAVEN clearance to land at hanger 7 did not take Captain Right long. Landing at a hanger designed for fighter jets and not large cargo jets. A new F-15 fighter was parked in the spot they needed.

This spot had the three-dimensional scanner setup. There are only two of these scanners at the airfield. One designed for smaller jets to scan for stress fractures or aliment problems due to warping.

The other is for large crafts like the RAVEN or the military's C-5 cargo plane. not suited to scan a Chevrolet C10 pickup truck.

Captain Right spoke up, "Teana, could you move that F-15?"

"I do not know, I have flown an F-14, I think I can taxi an F-15." Teana approached the jet when a man ran over. "Hay, is there something I can help you with?" Teana spoke to the man in military attire. "Yes, we need to move the F-15 off the pad."

"I cannot do that, this area is for military use. I need you to leave."

Teana continued speaking. "I believe you are mistaken. This pad and hanger are not owned by the Armed Forces, it is owned by Hargon Industries, and we have free unlimited access to this hanger. Now have someone move that fighter or we will move it for you."

"I do not think so." the man pulls a handgun out to point it at Teana.

The RAVEN was parked so the back of the jet was facing the hanger. *Clunk, Click, Wear* sound comes from the RAVEN as it drops Its I.E.C. (Impact Energy Canon) The wear was the I.E.C. rotating 180 degrees to target the man.

The I.E.C. rectangle tubing extends out, a blue light begins to get brighter at the breach. Just in front of the breach the energy was building up, creating a cylinder inside the rectangle tub.

A man in a flight Captain's uniform ran up to the man pointing his gun at Teana. Grabbing his arm, he forced him to point the handgun at the ground. "Airman, what do you think you are doing? Put that gun away before we all end up as grease stains on this hanger floor."

The RAVEN was still charging up its I.E.C. which should not take that long to charge up. "RAVEN, what are charging I.E.C. to?" Captain Right says out loud. The RAVEN responded. "120%"

"Well stop, we need this hanger intact. Power down weapon RAVEN." The blue light of the cannon dimmed until it went out. Captain Right spoke. "If you could move the F-15, we can do what we came for and leave."

The Air force Captain nodded his head. "Ok, I will get it moved. He started clinging up the side of the F-15 when the electronic monotone voice spoke from the RAVEN. "My weapon is powered down but is targeting that F-15, do not try anything. Protecting my pilots is my priority."

The F-15 rolled out of the hanger with its weapons system powered down. The man could see the cannon tracking him as he rolled away from the hanger.

"Drop the ram, let's get C10 into the scanner." Captain Right ordered.

The ram dropped and the crew unstrapped C10 letting it roll out of the cargo jet with Rita inside. Parking on the pad, Grace went over to the terminal and started a new scan for C10.

The hanger had 4-foot x 4-foot silver pillars that went from floor to ceiling every 6 feet all along the 80'x100' perimeter of the hanger.

Grace got everything set for the scan. She turned to Rita still sitting in the Chevrolet. "Rita, could you come over here and close the truck door."

Rita came over to Grace. The rest of the hanger was empty as the scanning pillars began to hit C10 with lasers.

Rita looks over Grace's shoulder to see lines of green code scrolling down the center terminal. The right terminal showed lines of green and red codes. The left one shows a 3D model of the Chevrolet C10.

"What does this all mean?" Rita asked Grace. "This center one is loaded with C10's normal status code. The scanners are looking for anything that is out of the normal spec, shown on this monitor. This one shows a scan of its frame, skin, and armor. You can see that the Shock Shell that hit C10 arced along its skin and damaged these three interlocked armor plates."

"If it hit here?" Rita pointed to the 3D model showing the passenger side of C10, indicating the impact point.

"The kinetic absorption displaced the energy across multiple panels. It's not designed for shell fire, the shell bent the locking tabs. The armor needs to be replaced. I have developed a new Mimetic Mesh Armor for 003 after it was damaged on a mission. I will take these scans and have a set of new Armor made for 001."

Grace typed in a few commands on her terminal. "For now, I will remove all the passenger side armor to replace the skin mesh and repair the Armor the best I can."

After 45 minutes of scanning, the lasers turned off. Grace spoke up. "Ok team let's get to work."

The maintenance crew came into the hangar and Grace instruct them to start removing the armor from C10's passenger taillight to its passenger headlight. After Grace spoke to the truck. "C10, please deactivate mesh."

The electric charge running through the Mesh turned off. Grace unfolded the Mesh and cut it behind the taillight. Pulling it off from the bed to the cab, she cut it and then from the cab to the back of the headlight.

Taking the new roll of Mesh Grace pulled it all the way from the rear Chevy badge to the front badge. Putting the roll down she spoke. "C10, reseal Mesh." The Mesh was sucked into C10's frame laying perfectly with its lines.

Grace cut the Mesh near the roll and pulled the extra material back. It was sucked out of her hand, as it folded itself behind the headlight. Doing the same to the back, she began locking in the undamaged armor panels.

10 minutes after Grace finished going over C10's symptoms a utility van pulled into the hanger. Men pulled three new armor panels for C10's bedside.

Rita woke up to find she was in a strange room. It took her a moment to remember that she was at the privet housing for Hargon Industries employees just off the airfield.

Rita saw the note on the dresser that said the RAVEN crew left for another mission.

The note also said that if she needed an investigator to help her. She should call F.L.A.G. and ask for The Knight in Black Armor.

Monday, October 3, 1983

Knight Industries F.L.A.G Mansion

12:15

K.I.T.T. was parked on a four-post lift as April when over his suspension from Michael making him Turbo Jump during a drift. K.I.T.T. landed on his back left wheel, blowing out suspension seals.

"How is it going April."

"If you were more careful this would not happen. I'm going to suggest to Devon that you need to go through the operation and safety briefing."

"No, please April not the 3-hour briefing. I will do anything, please."

The English voice of Mr. Miles came from behind Michael. "It is no use, Michael, your schedule is clear for the next 6 hours to go over K.I.T.T.'s abilities and how not to use them."

As Michael was trying to get out of the safety briefing K.I.T.T.'s privet phone began to ring. The number was unknown but had a level 3 encryption.

Answering the call K.I.T.T. heard a female voice. P: "Hello, I was told to call this number and ask for The Knight in Black Armor. I need his help.

"This is the Knight in Black Armor, what can I do for you."

P: "Well is about finding my brother's murderer and I think it was his boss Garth Knight."

K.I.T.T. accessed everything he had on Garth Knight. According to the records Garth Knight was going to be his driver until he was arrested for arms dealing and accused of selling Hargon Industries technology.

He was supposed to be living 3 life sentences in an African prison. K.I.T.T. used his I.N.D.E.X codes to access FBI, CIA, NSA, and ATC to find out that Garth Knight escaped prison and disappeared after being last seen boarding a plane heading for America.

P: "Are you still there?"

"Yes, could I get your name?" The line was quiet for a minute before she spoke. P: "I do not know if I should say over the phone. Would you give me yours? I was only given your code name"

"This line is level 3 encrypted. My name is K.I.T.T. and I work for The Foundation for Law and Government."

P: "Ok, I'm Rita Wilcox. I work as a private accountant. K.I.T.T. are you an investigator?

"I can say I'm a bodyguard, my partner is a former detective and now a privet investigator."

P: "Oh that makes sense, you are called The Knight in Black Armor. What is your partner's name or code name?"

K.I.T.T. was about to tell Rita that Michael is called the lone crusader when he was lowered to the ground.

Michael was waving his hand in front of K.I.T.T. and April was franticly going over the diagnostic data of the terminal.

K.I.T.T. reactivated his external microphones. "K.I.T.T., can you hear me, April have you found anything?"

"No, I have not found anything I do not know why he will not respond."

"Rita, could you hold for a moment my partner is worried about why I'm not talking to him."

P: "Ok, K.I.T.T."

Michael reaches out to open K.I.T.T.'s door but it locked itself before he could open it. "What?"

"Michael, you have not gone over the safety briefing. Improper use of my system could lead to more damage to others and myself."

"K.I.T.T., you are ok. What, you were ignoring me because of the ascended, I said I was sorry and would not do it again."

"Michael, you can not promise a situation will never come up that we need to you that maneuver. The maneuver was not necessary this time."

Michael's shoulders slumped as he looked down. "I'm sorry K.I.T.T. I will go through the safety sheet and briefing." he turned and left the garage.

April spoke after the garage was empty "K.I.T.T., what was that about."

"April, you hear what happened to my brother, K.A.R.R., when his partner was injured last year."

"I heard he was hospitalized for 6 months and is doing ok."

"I have heard from K.A.R.R. and Alex is doing ok but if he had been normal, he would have died saving Michael from the explosion."

K.I.T.T. was quiet for a bit waiting for April to say something but she was waiting for K.I.T.T. "I'm programmed to protect human life, but Michael Knight's life is more important. When Michael does something to stop me from coming to his aid it conflicts with my prime directive. Unlike K.A.R.R. who would weigh his self-preservation with saving his driver? I will not, I will destroy myself for my driver."

April interrupted him. "Why would K.A.R.R. put himself in danger for his driver?"

Mr. Miles's voice came from the doorway to the mansion. "That was Wilton and Alex. They taught K.A.R.R. something that he needed. Something that was not in his code, to begin with. I do not think Wilton had time to teach it to you and you have not had time to speak with Alex."

K.I.T.T. spoke. "What does K.A.R.R. know from our father that I do not?"

"April, could you give us a few minutes I will get you when we are done."

"Ok, Mr. Miles." April put down her tool and left the garage.

"K.I.T.T., when K.A.R.R. was first activated, he was stored in a server bank, and verbal tests were done to see if K.A.R.R. could handle complex scenarios. In the scenarios of K.A.R.R. getting damaged to any degree to avoid civilians, he would take out bystanders to get await from the danger."

"K.A.R.R. was built for battle not peacekeeping like me."

"That is true. Alex K.A.R.R.'s assigned partner is regarded as the Hero of the Armed Forces. He's labeled a Hero not because he does not kill, it because he does not attack the innocent, people trying to live their lives."

"If what you say is true, Alex would have not put K.A.R.R. in the field."

"That is correct K.I.T.T. Wilton, Bonnie, the other team members, and I tried everything he could think of to fix the problem. Then after a month, we were able to speak with Alex and he asked us to give K.A.R.R. different questions."

"What wear they."

"We asked K.A.R.R. what his primary derivative was. He said self-preservation, so we told him that was good, that all living beings have instincts to live. We also told him that living beings put trust in others to protect them. This trust he had in Wilton is the reason he self-destructed his engine during the test. Why he crashed through a concrete wall into a building on fire to save Alex."

"What does this have to do with Michael and me?"

"You are losing trust in Michael's judgment when it comes to your invulnerability."

"Ok, Devon I will try with Michael after my safety briefing. Now I have a Rita Wilcox on my privet line asking for our help with Garth Knight."
