Chapter 6: Gadgets and Gizmos

A/N: Short chapter, but a fun trip down memory lane. Next chapter will be a little more comical...Enjoy!

Sarah found the large, black polymer case in the top of the closet. She narrowed her eyes, curious to know what was inside.

Opening the case, she paused. It was a weapon's case. Well, more like a spy's equipment case.

She picked up the first item that caught her eye. A stainless steel Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm handgun. She cleared the weapon to make sure it was safe, and held it in her hands. She did not remember it…but it fit her hand like a glove.

Laying the handgun aside, Sarah found two phones. They were both old, and a little beat up. They didn't look like standard cellular phones, so she assumed there was a story there.

Holding one of the phones, she felt a memory return.

I'm on a plane…distance. She placed a mouth to her hand, and sighed. She felt so lonely, and saddened in the memory. She felt a hand on her own…Chuck's mother.

We went on a mission together? I was…missing Chuck terribly.

The next item Sarah picked up, was a pair of glasses. They looked identical to the ones for the Intersect. These looked…older. A note was attached.

"For a real spy." Sarah said out loud. Another story there.

Setting the glasses aside…she found another handgun. She sighed heavily. Her Smith and Wesson 5906. The firearm she carried for years. The firearm she threatened Chuck…and Ellie with…

Sarah's hand hovered over the weapon, and she clenched her fist. She didn't even want to touch the damn thing. It looked diseased. Cursed.

Sarah tossed the weapon aside, and stopped what she was doing. Pain, regret, and sadness consuming her. She took a seat on the bed, and suddenly felt warm hands on her shoulders. Chuck's hands. Seeing the handgun tossed aside, Chuck sighed.

"For a long time…that was your preferred sidearm."

"Not anymore." Sarah said, slightly disgusted. "Chuck…that weapon…I used it to betray you. To betray…us."

Chuck leaned down, and picked up the handgun. Mirth in his tone. "This handgun also saved my life more times than I can count. You love this gun, Sarah."

Sarah shook her head in shame. "And…I almost killed you with it. Ellie too."

Chuck thought about it for a moment. "I don't think you should part with it. Besides…this isn't the exact gun you used. The one you used…Quinn put in your hands."

Sarah sighed heavily. "I traded it out…didn't I?"

"Yeah…" Chuck said in a calm tone. "You carried the M&P after we started our spy company. Said it was…lighter…and easier to maintain."

Chuck sat the 5906 back in the case. "Funny. I never did like these things."

Sarah gave Chuck a puzzled look. "A part of me is relieved you never carried a firearm...while part of me doesn't understand how you were a spy, and never carried a firearm."

Chuck sighed heavily. "Actually…in the concert hall…I did."

"Really?" Sarah said surprised. "I didn't even know…"

Chuck gave Sarah a sad smile. "I've used a handgun once. You remember the story. On Shaw. I carried tranq guns since. But…after Quinn took you away…" Chuck trailed, his tone turning cold. "I was ready to kill the bastard. I won't lie about that. He was one step ahead of us the entire time. Almost shot you…but shot me. I wasn't going to give him another chance. I changed my mind when we needed him to disarm the bomb...so I went with a tranq gun."

"I'm glad I killed him." Sarah said calmly. "And...he didn't take me away...just my memories."

Chuck smiled sadly. "I hate killing…but after losing my father…and almost losing you…I won't hesitate to protect the ones I love."

Sarah smiled, taking Chuck by the hand. "He's gone now. It's over."

Chuck squeezed Sarah's hand. "Oh look. I picked up this pen at a weapon's conference." Chuck picked up the pen, revealing the blade.

Sarah laughed softly. "Spy pens are so cliché."

Chuck burst into laughter. "That's exactly what you said when I showed it to you the first time!"

Sarah turned, and held up the cell phones. "Tell me about these."

Chuck nodded. "Beckman gave us these to keep in touch…when you went undercover with my mom to take down Volkoff."

Sarah nodded in understanding. "Explains why…I remembered holding it on a plane." Sarah squinted. "I had black hair?"

Chuck smiled. "Yep. That was some look. Dark. Mysterious. Sexy as hell." Chuck's eyes widened. "Sorry."

"Don't be." Sarah said, hiding her blush. "That actually explains a…really hot dream I had…it was us…making love in a supply closet. I was dressed all in black…was it on the Volkoff mission?"

Chuck popped his neck. "Uh…yeah. You were in a hurry…and you were just…so beautiful..as usual...and we had been apart."

Sarah gave Chuck a sideways glance. "When you came after me as I was leaving...that kiss...really turned me on. That was hot."

"Yes it was." Chuck said with a faraway look.

Sarah bounced a shoulder. "And as you said...we had been apart for quite some time. I remember...shoving you in the supply closet after I kissed you ...we parted...then you came back after me. The way you were looking at me...I just couldn't resist being with you. We...needed that...intimacy."

Chuck coughed nervously. "Uh, huh. Yep."

Sarah laughed softly. "You said…it felt like you were cheating on me…with me…"

Chuck slammed his eyes shut. "Stupid, huh?"

"Chuck…I knew what you meant. We laughed about you saying that after we…um…"

"Right! Yes we did." Chuck said, clearing his throat. "You're right, Sarah. That was hot."

Sarah glanced back at the case, and found another object. A watch. "What is this?"

"Yet another cliché spy item." Chuck said, eliciting a chuckle from Sarah. "This is actually…watch number 4. The first three were destroyed. This one…it's just a regular watch. When I posed as Rafe Gruber…these…henchmen bought it for me to replace the one they crushed. I kept it as a souvenir."

Sarah carefully examined the watch. "I see why. This cost a fortune."

"Felt it could come in handy if we ever needed something of value to trade…in a pinch." Chuck said offhandedly.

Sarah smiled at Chuck's logic. "That's actually good thinking, Chuck."

Chuck scratched the back of his head. "Not that we need it. We have enough cash stashed away in various safe places…we could start all over if we needed to."

Sarah smiled. "Sounds like my idea."

"It was." Chuck said, glancing away thoughtfully. "You wanted an insurance policy to protect us…in case we had to run."

Sarah saw a large handheld device. "And this?"

Chuck's eyes widened. "Uh…be careful with that one. EMP weapon. That one…saved us in Russia."

Sarah shrugged, and sat it back in the case, a memory returning. "I was pissed at you for running your own side mission…but relieved when you rescued me and Casey." Sarah grinned. "You and Morgan…they referred to the both of you as 'Master Spies.' And…I remember freezing my ass off."

Chuck burst into laughter. Sarah heaved in her own laughter.

Sarah picked up the sunglasses and the note. "Are these Intersect glasses?"

Chuck took the glasses, smiling sadly. "Yes. Bryce left these for me...along with the note. After I...put them on...it uploaded an Intersect update." Chuck turned quiet. "Bryce died in my arms, Sarah."

"That's when you...uploaded the Intersect 2.0...and saved me and Casey from those Ring agents." Sarah said softly.

"Yeah." Chuck wiped away a tear. "He was once again trying to protect me...his death inspired me to...upload the Intersect again. I didn't want his death to be in vain...and I knew it was the only way to save you and Casey." Chuck shook his head in frustration. "Things spiraled out of control for a while after that."

Sarah nodded in understanding. "Chuck...that was so brave...and so noble of you to honor Bryce in that way." Sarah frowned. "I just wish...Beckman hadn't...rushed you away to Prague. I honestly believe things would had been different if she had let Casey and I train you." Sarah's tone turned soft. "For us."

Chuck sighed heavily. "A lot of bad things happened to us, Sarah. But...a lot of good things happened to us as well. And...we've done a lot of good."

Sarah smiled, taking Chuck by the hand. "You're right. And...to me...the best thing that has ever happened to me...is you, Chuck. The life we built...and I'd like to believe we did do a lot of good."

Chuck looked Sarah in the eyes. "Despite all the bad things that happened along the way...at the end of the day...the one thing that meant more to me than anything...was having you by my side."

Sarah cupped Chuck's face, and placed a gentle kiss on his lips, sighing in content. "With you...I became more than just a spy."

Sarah eyed her 5906 again, then picked it up. "Chuck…I'd like you to have this."

Chuck looked confused. "But…this was your handgun."

"I don't need it anymore. It means more to you anyway than it does to me. And…I don't really need it anymore."

Sarah cupped Chuck's face. "I have you now."

Chuck smiled, and kissed Sarah softly on the lips. Sarah eyed the handgun in Chuck's hands. "You can…put it in a display, though. I don't like you carrying a firearm."

"Good idea." Chuck said. "This belongs in a place of honor anyway."

"Okay." Sarah said, then picked up the M&P. "Besides…this feels really nice. I'll take it to a range soon, and try it out."

Chuck grinned. "I…bought it for you…as one my many wedding presents to you."

Sarah grinned. "You have good taste."

"That's what you said the first time."

Sarah sat the handgun on the bed, and grinned, snaking her arms around Chuck's neck. "Thinking about what we did in the supply closet has…turned me on."

Chuck smiled at his wife. "Well…you're welcome to do something about it if you would like."

Sarah crashed her lips into Chuck…and did just that.

A/N: I know...I know...I bent canon just a tad in the dialogue related to the scene from The Gobbler.

I get that the folks who developed Chuck wanted a James Bond-ish feel to the series, with a lot of cool gadgets. As an Ian Fleming junkie, the gadgets were a fun addition to the series.

I've already given my two cents on the firearm choices in the series in another story...even to this day when I watch the show...I cringe.

As a fun update to my previous thoughts, had I been the armorer for Chuck (wishful thinking...I know):

-Sarah would have carried a Glock 19 or a Smith and Wesson M&P 2.0 all black finish for her service weapon. I would have added a micro compact handgun to her "cover" carry rotation, such as a Glock 43x, Smith and Wesson Shield/Shield Plus, or Sig Sauer P365. Those would have been more practical for deep concealment.

-Casey carried the Sig Sauer P229...which is fine...but I would have had Casey carry a 1911 Model handgun, notably the M45 MEU(SOC), carried by Marine Force Recon. Casey is rugged, reliable, and "old school." To me, a 1911 Model handgun would have been befitting of his character. His back-up would have been a Colt Defender, or Sig Sauer P365 since he liked the Sig.

-Chuck carried Airsoft guns using green gas as his "tranq guns"...uh...yeah...

And no matter what firearm our favorite spies carried...they would have been secured in holsters. Not stuffed down their dang pants. Facepalm.

I'm mindful some of the firearms mentioned above were not in production at the time Chuck aired. Just my on wishful thinking on the firearms used by Sarah and Casey.

I get it. It's Hollywood. I'm also aware Chuck was on a tight budget, and more than likely limited on what props they had available. The show did feature a lot of different firearms, so I can't help but question the technical advising, or the lack thereof. Oh well...
