Chapter 19: In the Course of Time
The news of Naruto and Sakura's engagement spread over Konoha faster than what they would have wanted. And reactions were diverse. Her parents were happy, and though they marked their youth, realized that the war had side effects for everyone. The idea of Sakura's moving out shaked them, and they struggled to understand, especially Kizashi. But Naruto told his reasons plain and simple, and managed to convince them both.
Iruka, Ayame, Teuchi, Tsunade, and Shizune congratulated them, and if there was any doubt, they never expressed it. Tsunade in particular was the happiest of all to learn the news, because of everyone, she was the only one with her years numbered. She hoped she could see a baby before dying.
Of their friends, Shikamaru, Choji, Lee and Tenten were seemingly ok, while Ino was excited. The rest though, luckily, Naruto never faced them. Among the adults, Kurenai was probably the most happy about it. She regretted deeply she and Asuma hadn't embraced their relationship sooner because if they had, he would have met and raised their daughter, at least for a few years. Now it was too late, and Mirai would grow up without a father. Kurenai encouraged them.
Sakura moved in the last week of April, and took her things to the master bedroom. For some reason, it felt awkward, but Naruto reassured that everything was going to be ok.
"We can take my parents' stuff to the guests' room" Naruto had said, when the decision was made.
"Are you sure?"
"I am, more than ever"
And so, before they knew it, they were sleeping together, comfortably, every night. And obviously, they gave in to inner desires, aware that it was part of the new stage of their relationship. Sakura started using contraception jutsus, since they had decided they weren't ready for a child yet.
As days passed, they got accustomed to their new lifestyle and to each other. Sakura realized that he was cleaner than she thought, while he saw how neat and tidy she was. Truth was that they found themselves enjoying living together, getting to know each other as a whole, not only in body. And Naruto could finally feel that he wasn't alone. Even if he had spent two years and a half with his godfather, it wasn't at home. At home, he has always lived alone (from what he remembered), until now.
Sadly, some people didn't get to understand it. Sometimes Sakura's parents, Ino, Iruka, and Tsunade stopped by for lunch, or to have a light meal, tea in the afternoon (always in expected visits of course), but there were others, who didn't. And Naruto knew he owed them a talk.
And so one afternoon, while Sakura worked in the hospital, Naruto was jumping over the roofs, making his way to a friend's house.
He found the two people he was looking for, sitting on a bench at the terrace. Shikamaru was staring at the clouds, as usual, while Choji was eating some light snacks, thinking out loud. They turned around when they heard a certain person landing near them.
"We were wondering when you would show up..." Shikamaru said, unfazed.
"Choji? Please tell me you're on my side..." Naruto asked, almost pleadingly.
"We are on your side, Naruto, but it's complicated..." Choji admitted.
"Kiba said, literally, that you're crazy... Shino thinks you're disrespecting the villagers who still are in grief, and that you're too young. Neji made no comments but I can tell he was pissed... Oh, and I haven't seen Hinata in days..." Shikamaru said, adamantly.
"Some people at my mother's store seem excited, but others look simply upset. You split the village in half, you know?" Choji stated.
Naruto then sat on the rooftop, but at a certain distance from them. "Yeah well... I knew it was going to be like this. People will get used to it. But what do you think? Honestly"
"That you're rushing... I started dating Temari around the same time you started seeing Sakura, and we're still far from engagement... Way far" Shikamaru sounded sincere.
"I think you still have time... You two could be together without being engaged. My parents got married when they were 22, and had been dating for three years" Choji said. "It was also after a war, the 3rd one"
"You could have waited... And no one would have said a thing" Shikamaru commented.
"I was tired of waiting. I've been alone for most of my life. I barely remember any of my nannies, and the only two people who really cared about me when I was a child are gone... Iruka is all I have, but I can't live with him. I need a family. Someone to come home to... And Sakura is the love of my life. She loves me, I love her. We want to be together. Is there some problem with that?" Naruto snapped firmly, with a sad expression.
Choji remained in silence. He knew that Naruto had been mostly alone during his life, unlike the rest. He understood that, but others didn't. People could be self-centered, and ignore how others lived, what they suffered. He knew that from experience.
Shikamaru knew Naruto had a point. The question was if that was enough. "Bad timing?"
Naruto chuckled. "Timing... That's funny"
"How is that funny?"
"Because the answer is obvious. I've talked to the elders. Tsunade will give green light some time after I become jonin. Everyone will approve of it. I'll be Hokage sooner or later, and then what? I'll have less time to spend with Sakura, and our children if we have... I'll be traveling back and forth to the other nations now that there's an Alliance... Not to mention that I'm the only one who is in contact with the eight other Bijuus around the world. Where's my time then?" Naruto was speaking about his concerns. All the responsibilities that would fall over him soon. And if he didn't enjoy it now, then it would be too late.
Shikamaru sighed. "You're worrying too much about the future... We can help you. Gaara, B, the other Kages… you won't be alone... You'll have time"
"No, I won't..." Naruto stated.
"What do you mean that you won't?" Choji questioned.
"Even if you're a jinchuriki, Uzumaki blood brings longevity... You showed me the scrolls of your family last month" Shikamaru said, confidently.
Naruto looked down. "That's not... Only one of my grandparents was a true Uzumaki. There's a reason why my father sealed a half of Kurama within me... I can't contain the whole creature by myself, and so far, I'm ok just because he's cooperating. And my body will get old, and one day it won't resist Kurama anymore. Every minute of my life since I got the other half, I have to make it worthy..." he explained. This was an issue he had talked about with Kurama before everyone returned.
"What are you trying to say?" Shikamaru asked, now concerned.
"I'm Kurama's 3rd jinchuriki. My mother was the 2nd. And Mito Uzumaki, the 1st Hokage's wife, was the first one. Do you know how she died?" Naruto asked, gazing at them.
Both shook their heads.
"She had her daughter extract Kurama, and seal him within my mother... She was old, and couldn't take it anymore, so chose to die by her daughter's side. And one day, I'll have to do the same... Only that I'll let Kurama be free" Naruto said, shaken by his own reality.
Shikamaru and Choji were shocked. This was unexpected. None of them had ever considered Naruto's new situation. No one even had a clue that there was another half of the Kyuubi before the war.
Shikamaru reflected, and soon realized what he was saying. Naruto didn't have the powers of any Uzumaki. In comparison to Karin, he only had a big chakra reserve, but nothing else. That meant that with the whole Kyuubi inside, there was no way he could live as long as Mito. Naruto had his years numbered. All because of the burden he had to carry on since the day he was born.
"Does Sakura know?" Shikamaru asked.
Naruto shook his head. "I'll tell her eventually, but knowing her, she'll try to find any possible way to keep me alive, as long as possible... Anyway, by then, my life's end will depend solely on Kurama"
"There's no other way?" Choji asked.
"Look, six Bijuus are now free for the first time in a century. Kurama, Shukaku, and Gyuki are stuck with me, Gaara, and B until we die. They'll be set free one day, no matter what, as the old Sage said. It's just the way it is..." Naruto explained, calmly.
"So Gaara is going through the same?" Shikamaru inquired.
"I'm not sure how his case is, but probably..."
"How long do you think you have?" Choji asked, still worried.
"While I'm young, I'll be ok... Kurama said I might have until my late forties, or early fifties if I'm lucky" Naruto revealed.
Shikamaru sighed. "It could be worse"
"I know... that's why I'm not so worried. But knowing that I have 30 years to live, makes me see the future in a different way. I can't just wait and waste time. I'll have a lot of things to do, so I want to enjoy life now that I can..." Naruto got up to leave.
Choji couldn't help it, and went to give his friend a hug. "I'm sorry Naruto..."
"It's ok Choji... A lot of people die younger. And I'm grateful for the life I have..." Naruto said, optimistically, giving soft palms on his back.
"Yeah, but it's troublesome... You won't have a normal life like us... There'll be too many responsibilities on you" Shikamaru stated, while seeing Choji pull apart.
"That's why I'll need your help. Konohamaru is already on the line..." Naruto still sounded positive.
Shikamaru put a hand on his shoulder. "I'll be your best man. And your advisor"
"Count on me too. I wouldn't miss your wedding for nothing in the world" Choji assured.
Naruto smiled softly.
"Should we tell the others?" Shikamaru asked.
Naruto turned to leave. "Nah... Let them take their time... Besides, we have the rest of the year to plan the wedding"
"Ok..."
"See you around" Naruto said, before jumping away, heading home.
"See you later Naruto!" Choji shouted.
"See you soon" Shikamaru stated.
In may, Naruto went back to Kushiro to retrieve Kakashi, as accorded. Keisuke was fine with it, having learned all that he wanted to learn, and was promised he'd receive visits from Kakashi every now and then.
Anko decided to stay on the island, having grown accustomed to a life by the sea. It brought her a peace she had never found before.
With Kakashi back, Naruto felt even better than before, and they finally could talk to each other like family. Seemingly the time on that island had softened Kakashi, since now he was more open than before. Even Sakura got to know this side of him, when he stopped by the house.
Plus, they noticed that their sensei had begun to spend more time with Tsunade. It became clear by june. Something was going on.
One morning, Tsunade sent Naruto to be called for a talk, but not in the office. Instead, they met at the tower's terrace.
He found her staring at the village, alone.
"Hi... Is everything ok?"
The blonde woman turned around. "Yeah... I was just thinking, that's all... How are you?"
"Happy" Naruto smiled.
Tsunade let out a chuckle. "That's good. I'm happy for you two too... I assume you haven't told her"
Naruto merely shook his head, and headed to the railing. "You have experience with this stuff. I mean, what did Dan think about your ability? Or, Jiraiya, which was his stand?"
Tsunade sighed, still glancing over the village. "Dan knew, but since we were both young, he didn't worry so much... Besides, in the middle of a war, we couldn't really think about the future..." she turned around. "Jiraiya was ok with it. All he wished for me was to be happy, no matter how long I live. And in some ways, I am..."
"So... Do you think there's a good time to tell?" Naruto asked.
"Your case is different. I don't think Sakura can handle it right now. Maybe you should wait... Until she's ready" Tsunade suggested.
"I was figuring out that... I don't want to make her sad" Naruto responded.
"Then don't. Eventually you'll get through it together... Now, I called you for two reasons..." Tsunade said, intending to change subject.
Naruto leaned on the railing. "You're not making me Hokage now, right? Because if that's why..."
"No" she interrupted him. "But I'm resigning next month... I'll appoint Kakashi as my successor"
Naruto was mildly surprised. "Are you sure? I mean, I know you were considering it, but... Why so soon?"
"I released the seal against Madara, and I'm already starting to feel weaker. Age has finally caught up with me. I want to spend my last few years living instead of working" Tsunade stated, sincerely.
"Before the war you said you had around 8 years... So now, how long?" Naruto asked.
"Maybe five. But if I live quietly, I might hold on a little longer... I won't use the jutsu to look younger anymore" she admitted. Now she was already 55, so hoped to get to 61 at least.
"It's going to be weird... You'll look like a real granny" Naruto said.
"Hey! Maybe I want to look my age... That way I'll be a real grandma for your children" she winked at him.
Naruto chuckled. "You know, you're another reason for me to get married soon. I want you to meet my children"
"Thanks... I'd love to hold the baby of my two favorite youngsters..." Tsunade said, joyfully.
"Speaking of which... I have a question. Kakashi said it's ok, but I want to know what you think..." Naruto sounded conflicted.
"Alright... Shoot. We have time"
"I've been thinking about using my father's surname..." Naruto blurted.
"Oh... Why?" the Hokage asked.
"I don't know... Maybe because I don't feel like a true Uzumaki... And a lot of people have said I resemble my father. But, what would my mother think? I don't mean to let her down" Naruto answered, with doubts.
"If they hadn't died, you'd have been known as Namikaze Naruto. And Kushina was fine with it... That's how they were going to name you" Tsunade responded, confidently.
"But with all the things that happened... Is it ok to change it now?" Naruto questioned.
"It's ok if you are sure the surname doesn't dictate how much you love them... Don't overthink" she said.
"Ok… I won't… Thanks. Now which was the second reason?"
"It's about Amegakure... I keep receiving negatives for a diplomatic mission. Are you sure Konan and you were on good terms?" the 5th Hokage inquired.
Naruto nodded.
"Ok then... My idea was to send you and Kakashi to investigate. Something is wrong..." Tsunade said, concerned.
A week later, Naruto and Kakashi infiltrated Ame, surpassing the reclusive village in the same way Jiraiya did almost a year ago, assisted by the toads.
Once in, they searched for information in the streets. The people weren't as closed as when Pain was the leader, but they were still wary of foreigners.
However, Kakashi had a friend living in Ame, who could give them the answers they were looking for. They stopped by his house, and the man, Seigo, quietly welcomed the pair in.
Seigo had been saved as a child by Sakumo Hatake at the beginning of the 3rd ninja war, and they had remained in contact ever since. He knew that Sakumo had a son, and recognized immediately the white hair.
They sat, and spoke freely. At one point, the question emerged.
"Who's the leader of this village?"
"A man named Mubi…" Seigo answered.
"What happened to Konan? The blue haired woman..." Naruto asked, sounding impatient.
"She's dead... Before the 4th war, a villager found her body at the big lake in the outskirts of Ame" Seigo informed.
Naruto looked down. His promise of bringing peace to Amegakure was uncertain now. If the new leader didn't want to welcome messengers from Konoha, then he was hostile.
"What does this man preach?" Kakashi asked.
"He's part of Hanzo's beliefs... An enemy of the big nations. He despises them since they never paid attention to small villages like ours. And he has been in contact with the leaders of Kusaga, and Otogakure. Their idea is to create an Union of smaller villages, as a countermeasure to the Alliance" Seigo explained.
"And what do you think?"
"I don't really care much about politics... But the man has a point, and is not killing dissidents mercilessly like Pain did" Seigo answered.
Kakashi sighed. "Ok... I guess there's not much we can do. Thanks for updating us"
He gestured to Naruto that it was time to leave, so both stood up.
"Your welcome... If I may ask, why do you care about Angel? Pain destroyed Konoha, and died there... They were murderers" Saigo inquired. The story reached Ame several months ago. Everybody knew that Naruto defeated Pain.
Before Naruto could answer, Kakashi spoke.
"Naruto, Pain, and Konan were trained by the same person. Jiraiya, one of the Sannin. But you're right, the two were murderers"
Naruto walked away unfazed, and didn't utter a word. Deep down, he knew that his sensei was right. What was bothering him was something else.
Afterwards, Saigo led them out, and the two left, quietly, without no one suspecting anything.
On the way back to Konoha, Naruto spoke out his concerns to Kakashi.
"I think Obito did it..."
"Probably... Those Rinnegans were in Nagato's body, and Obito got them somehow" Kakashi guessed.
"In the last months, I never thought... They were supposed to be allies" Naruto said.
"Maybe Konan just wanted to defend her friend's honor. I don't think she knew about Madara" Kakashi considered.
"Still... Why kill her? She had changed, and I don't think she was like Nagato" Naruto questioned.
"Whatever good Obito did on Kushiro, he was still mad... According to Kasumi, he hated all those cold-blooded assassins, and Pain was simply another one of them... He knew Konan better than us. Seigo too" Kakashi said.
"Are you justifying him?" Naruto asked.
"No... I'm just saying he was mad. And I remember well what Madara said... Nagato was meant to revive him, not Obito. The moment he used the Rinne Tensei on me and the rest of the villagers, Obito realized that Black Zetsu would use him, hence he lost his chance to enter the dreamworld. I think that tore him apart..."
"Though that worked in our favor... Things turned out ok" Naruto said.
"Yeah... But not for Obito. It's hard to feel that one of your old friends deserved a different ending" Kakashi stated.
"I get the feeling" Naruto commented.
"Who would have thought... When our team started, I used to think that you were more like Obito, and Sasuke was more like me... And now..." Kakashi reflected.
"They were Uchihas, while we are family. Beats us" Naruto commented.
He agreed, and continued the walk, in silence. Naruto didn't want to use Hiraishin yet because it still was demanding. He needed more practice to minimize the energy drain of the jutsu.
Before returning, they discussed what to do about the smaller villages' attitude towards the Alliance. It didn't seem an urgent problem, but they would have to find a solution eventually.
When summer came, Naruto saw that people were finally leaving behind the scars from the war. The Inuzukas were seen more often outside their neighborhood, and the Hyugas started to open up, under Neji and Hinata's leadership.
On July 31, all the jonins met to approve Kakashi as the 6th Hokage. Shikamaru, Shino, Naruto, Choji, and Sakura had been the latest additions, hence, were expected to appear.
A few days before, Naruto made a trip to Kushiro so Anko could be present, since there couldn't be any absentees.
In the end, Kakashi was approved almost unanimously, with only a few abstentions from members of Root.
The ceremony was held on August 1st, at the Hokage's tower. Lady Tsunade, for the first time looking like a fifty-something year old woman, passed the Hokage hat and cape to her successor, and all the villagers clapped their hands from the street.
Naruto and Sakura were among the crowd, since their sensei had rejected any company up there, in the terrace.
The Rokudaime Hokage then gave a modest speech, telling he expected to be at the heights of his predecessors. He thanked Tsunade, Shizune, his sensei the 4th, his parents, his pupils and friends, and at last, he mentioned Guy. He ended up saying "I might be the Hokage, but I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him. He saved not only the whole world, but also me, by always showing courage against adversity. No matter the hardships, the losses he suffered, he stood up over and over again... I just followed his path. It's an honor being called his friend. Thanks for cheering up!" Kakashi raised the hat with his thumb up, and everyone instantly clapped and cheered.
Lee sobbed tears of joy by hearing Kakashi's words, and raised his thumb, to honor his sensei. Tenten, Neji, and each villager soon did the same. Guy's memory would live in Konoha forever.
Not long after, the crowd began to disperse, little by little. Naruto, Sakura, Lee, and Tenten decided to enter the tower, among other people. They found Kakashi standing next to the bronze statue that had been created to honor Might Guy.
The figure resembled the world hero, with his classic smile and cheerful attitude.
"You gave a great speech, Kakashi-sensei" Lee muttered.
"Thanks for your words" Tenten said, still shaken.
"It was inspiring" Sakura admitted.
"Just like him" Naruto added.
Kakashi remained staring at the statue. "It's the truth... At my worst times, he was there. If the villagers can get to be more like him, it'll change for better"
After leaving the tower's residence, Lady Tsunade retired to her old home, the house of his grandfather. The place was big enough to sustain a family, and had been inhabited for years. It wasn't abandoned, since she had sent Shizune or someone (even Sakura) to clean up around every now and then, but the truth was that she had avoided living there because of Nawaki's memory. And only now she felt at peace with him. The dream had ended. Her job was done. It was time to set back in, and live her final years, until the moment to reunite with her family came.
Shizune wasn't sure of what to do. She knew what her master was doing, and how many years she had left, so felt stuck. Tsunade had ordered her to keep directing the hospital, and assist Kakashi. And though Shizune was ok with it, she also wanted to take care of her. Tsunade insisted that she could handle on her own, and spend time with Hanako, Naruto, Sakura, and even make short rounds in the hospital to keep herself busy. She didn't want to take more of Shizune's time, since she wouldn't live forever.
In the end, Shizune decided to live part-time in the tower's residence, and the Senju's family house.
One morning, Kakashi was filling some daily paperwork regarding the routinary missions of Konoha, with Shizune's help. It had been a quiet day, mid august, and he was still getting used to the job.
She gave him the necessary pointings when he got stuck, or if misunderstood some forms, so it helped. Near midday, they stored the files, and saved the remaining paperwork for the next day. She got ready to leave since she was in charge of the hospital for the afternoon, and usually had lunch there, alone, with Sakura, or Tsunade.
But this time, things were going to be different.
"You're going to the hospital, right?" Kakashi asked, suddenly.
"Yeah, Sakura might be there already, if there's work overload, or Lady Tsunade, if she's in the mood for going out..." Shizune answered, nonchalantly.
"Would you mind if I... join you?" Kakashi said, almost disjointedly.
"At the hospital?" Shizune was muddled.
Kakashi was nervous, and struggled to find the right words. "I don't know... What I meant... Lunch. Join you for lunch"
Shizune hilted her head, in surprise. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. "I'm not sure if I heard you... Did you just say we should have lunch together? I mean, out of work?"
The Hokage didn't know what to do. He was pretty rusty at this, and felt like a doofus. "Is that... Not ok? I wouldn't mind if you just prefer to leave alone..." he saw the stunned look on her face, and added regretfully "Forget I said anything, never mind"
"No, wait... I was just... surprised, I mean, you never seemed interested in... I don't know, seeing someone, out of duty" Shizune admitted, not wanting to drop the issue. Truth was that she was probably as rusty as him.
"Well, I think I might need some help in... this job. I have to change some old habits" Kakashi said, trying to sound sure of himself.
"Ok... I know some places close from here and the hospital to get a good meal" she said, calmly. She'd have to keep leading him then.
A smile was drawn behind the mask, as somewhere in his mind, a voice said "Guy, challenge accepted"
One night in early September, Naruto and Sakura were preparing dinner after another hard day of work. He had had a patrol shift during the morning, and a meeting with Gaara where they discussed the progress between Shukaku and Suna. It was slow, but little by little, the villagers started to realize that the raccoon dog wasn't a heartless monster after all. Meanwhile, Sakura dealt with a little outbreak of a rare infectious disease in Konoha. It wasn't fatal, but the symptoms weren't easy to treat. Tsunade warned that there must be some strange virus going around.
Talking about this and other stuff, Naruto remembered something they had talked about last night, certain things they wanted to confirm.
"So, did you talk to Shizune?"
"Yep..." Sakura licked the mustard out of a spoon.
Naruto loved it when she did that. "What did she say?"
"It's a fact. Kakashi-sensei finally took the leap" Sakura said, while adding flavors to the grilled fish.
"The leap? So he finally is ready for dating" he assumed.
"Is much more than that" Sakura finished preparing the dishes, and went to the dinner table.
Naruto sat across from her, and they began to eat.
"What do you mean?"
In-between bites, she spoke. "He never showed you what's under the mask, right?"
Naruto shook his head.
"I saw it during a discussion he was having with Tsunade... It happened about a week after you and Jiraiya left" she took a sip of water. "He has an ugly scar on the corner of his mouth that goes to the chin. He made it by accident when he was little, by playing with his father's special sabre"
"And he never treated it? His father didn't help him?" Naruto asked, curiously.
"There was no way to fix it back then, and Lady Tsunade only managed to make a little surgery... And he stayed with the scar" Sakura explained.
"But if four years ago they discussed..."
"Tsunade and Shizune figured out a new treatment, but he had refused, saying it was a reminder of his childhood. He didn't want to let go, and was afraid it wouldn't work" Sakura continued.
"And now he's ready to try then..." Naruto guessed.
Sakura nodded, smiling. When she finished her plate, spoke again. "Shizune said that he's putting his whole trust in her... For the treatment"
"And what about the other thing?" Naruto asked.
"She said they're figuring things out. No rush, first things first" Sakura responded.
"I think they'd make a nice couple... Both had losses, and had been alone for a while... A long while. Though I didn't know much about her life before coming here" Naruto commented.
"She had a few shots, but taking care of Tsunade ended up being her main responsibility... I assume there weren't guys who could handle a depressed woman" Sakura said, seeming slightly saddened. The life Tsunade and Shizune had before returning to Konoha wasn't pleasant.
"Well, I'm not sure if Kakashi had any shots, but his baggage was surely too big for any woman... Before it was easy to judge, but now I understand why he spent so much time reading those pervy novels" Naruto looked down.
"Hopefully, now he can leave that behind..." Sakura stood up. "Your turn to do dishes"
Naruto sighed. "Can't we negotiate?"
"Come on, where's your stamina?" Sakura inquired.
"It stayed in Suna" Naruto said, still sitting on the frowned "Right, and Kurama can't pass you a bit of chakra for this"
"No, he used all for the trip back"
Sakura already knew he was just trying to get away with it. This wasn't the first time.
"Ok... Then we'll go to sleep right away... No bang for tonight. If you can't handle it..." she said, teasingly.
Naruto then stood up in a blur. "I think I already rested enough"
"Fool!" she threw him the sponge.
"Come on, I know you like to play along" Naruto said, grinning.
As September passed, Naruto and Sakura celebrated their first anniversary, the day they got together. They discussed which day it was of all, since there were various possibilities. He considered the day where both said the words to each other for the first time, but she insisted that they already knew how they felt. So in the end, she won the discussion, and the anniversary was set for the day Tsunade woke up from the coma.
While walking back home, Naruto expressed his recent concerns.
"You know, I've been thinking... Our love story didn't have a great start. I mean, it was messy" Naruto blurted.
Sakura looked down, pensieve. "It was a complicated time... But we worked it out. This is something special, that we can make last forever..." she raised her hand, with the engagement ring on highlight. "It doesn't matter much how it started"
"I know... But when our children ask, how did you fall in love with dad? How did you get together? What are you gonna say?" Naruto asked, playfully.
She giggled at his imitation of soft voices. "That you saved me... In more ways than anyone, and that you showed me what real love means... The one who always held my back" Naruto was touched. "As for the second one, I'll say 'Your dad was pretty stubborn, and I had to make him see reason, as usual'..."
Naruto let out a chuckle. "That would make them laugh"
"Ok... What would you say? Mr Sage..." Sakura asked.
"Mmmph... That I fell in love with her since the first time I saw her... And that I almost let my stupid fears get in the way of being happy with the love of my life" Naruto said, looking at her.
She stopped her steps, and wrapped her arms around him, enchanted by his words. "You see... How couldn't they love our story?" Sakura asked, staring at him.
He smiled before pulling in for a soft kiss, which she returned tenderly.
Days passed as the anniversary of the end of the war approached.
Kakashi received the special treatment by Shizune, which consisted in replacing the damaged tissue from his skin. Tsunade had studied some medicine techniques from her mother and grandfather, which had been stored in the house for years (and she had never before got to read them after Dan's death), and found a way to regenerate the dermic tissue by using just a simple DNA sample of Kakashi. In the end, the little surgery was a success, and he was given a few days of recovery, as the tissue adjusted properly.
When October came, Kakashi was ready to show up in public without his mask. It felt weird for him, so he took as much time as he could. Only with encouragement from Shizune, Naruto, and Sakura, he got used to it.
On October 5th, a memorial ceremony was held at the cemetery, to remember once again those who have fallen in battle. Everyone assisted, as expected, and the place was filled with bouquets one more time.
Five days later, Naruto celebrated his birthday properly for the first time in his life (at Sakura's insistence). There was a small party in the house, with family and friends. And surprisingly for him, the members of team 8, made an appearance, after barely talking to him in months. He had a good time, and received several presents. Tsunade made the cake, using colors yellow and red, to represent the two people Naruto would have wished the most to see again. After everybody left, Naruto was left with mixed feelings, given all the happy birthdays he missed without his parents. He could never have any with them, and all he got was the letter and late present from his father last year. Sakura knew that sometimes she couldn't fill that void for him, so she simply expressed her undying support and company for the rest of his life. And he thanked her, more than anything, to know that she would still be there with him, no matter what. He couldn't live without her.
From then, the preparations for the wedding had to start. They both set the date: December 7th. Sakura's eighteenth birthday was on November 28, so it was the earliest time possible given the law.
Sakura had all the help she needed (excess of help), with her parents, Ino, Haruka, Tsunade, and Shizune. Even Konohamaru's mother, Yoshino Nara, and Keiko Akimichi took part in the set for the event.
November obviously was the craziest month for both of them. The invitations were sent, and little by little, the responses came. From Kumo, B, Omoi, and C (because of Ino) were going to attend. From Suna, Gaara and Temari accepted, and though Kankuro wanted too, someone had to stay and take care of the village. Ebiso had died a few months ago, and after the war, there was no one else with the power to keep everything under control.
From Iwa, Kurotsuchi and Akatsuchi agreed to go on behalf of their village, aware that Onoki would have wanted it. Part of being in the Alliance.
From Kiri, the Mizukage sent Chojuro. And from the rest of the world, three people accepted without hesitation: Tazuna, Tsunami, and Inari.
A week before the wedding, Naruto couldn't avoid feeling a little nervous. While having lunch together, Sakura noticed it, the way he struggled to eat his bowl of ramen.
"Didn't you get the right suit? Or is it something else?" Sakura asked.
"No, everything is fine... Just... Kiba, Hinata, and Shino hadn't confirmed their attendance" Naruto said, seemingly mildly troubled.
Sakura sighed. "So what are you thinking?"
"Is it ok?"
She leaned her head over her hand. "We can't please everyone… Maybe it's better this way... We are who we are"
"I know... Though they came for my birthday" Naruto stated, still concerned.
"So..."
"I don't mean to hurt them..." Naruto said, quietly.
Sakura reached his hand from across the table. "You wanted to do this now... And you have your reasons. Has that changed?" she sounded worried.
Naruto squeezed her hand, and observed the ring. Then he raised his head to glance at her.
She seemed scared. There was a glimpse of fear in her green eyes, a preview of sadness.
And he promised he'd never make her sad. He promised he'd never leave her. No, things haven't changed. Kurama was happy for him, because he knew that life wouldn't be so long.
"No. I haven't changed my mind" he assured, with a soft smile. "You're right... Maybe we can't keep everyone content"
Sakura sighed, in relief, aware that he wasn't lying. There wouldn't be wedding jitters, not here.
The day of the wedding, the Konoha temple was full. Despite the absence of the Inuzukas, the Hyugas, and the Aburames, the place was still crowded. It wasn't as if all Konoha had attended, but there were plenty of curious eyes to see B, the Kazekage (both regarded as world saviors), and the guests from Iwa, and Kiri. And though there was no room for everyone, many children and villagers wanted to see the happy union between the hero of Konoha, and the pretty medic ninja who always treated all her patients kindly in the hospital. No matter what, most people cherished the couple. Happiness prevailed on the streets.
Naruto was standing by the altar, next to Shikamaru and Choji. The minister was in the center, also close to him.
"You got the rings, right?" Naruto asked.
"Of course, how could I miss them?" Shikamaru retorted.
"I just wanted to be sure" Naruto said, now relieved.
He glanced at the rows of seats reserved for his family and friends. Almost all the people he wanted to see, were there: Iruka, Kakashi, Teuchi, Ayame, Gaara, Konohamaru, Udon, Moegi, Lee and his mother, Genma, Raido, Shikaku, Yoshino, Choza and his wife, Hanako, Karin, among others. Sadly, there were three notable, irreplaceable absentees. As much as he wished, his parents and Jiraiya couldn't be there. All he had was his father's letter and a picture of them in his pocket.
By the other side, reserved for Sakura's family and friends: Mebuki, Tsunade, Shizune, Inoichi, Haruka, Kurenai, Tenten and her parents, Temari, C, Anko, Yamato, Sai, the hospital vice director, along with several nurses, doctors, and neighbors of the Harunos.
From the middle of the aisle to the end, there were B, Omoi, Akatsuchi, Kurotsuchi, Chojuro, Inari, Tsunami, and Tazuna.
While scrutinizing the crowd, trying to find a surprise, Naruto did recognize three people: Hana Inuzuka, Ko Hyuga, Shibi Aburame and his wife. He smiled, assuming they had come on behalf of their families and clans.
When the Canon in D started to sound, Naruto's eyes directed to the end of the hallway. Shortly after, Sakura appeared accompanied by her father. And she was glowing in beauty. She was wearing a white dress court train, three quarter length sleeves, A-line with floral lacework, and a 2 meters length veil, embroidered by flowers on its hem.
Naruto couldn't take his eyes off her, as she walked down the aisle with Kizashi. He bowed to him when her father gave her daughter away, and then the two stood facing each other.
As the ceremony started, Sakura realized that everything was like in her dream, except for the absence of those who were gone. She looked for some sign of sadness in her fiancee's face, but didn't find any. He was amazed, and happy, like inside a dream.
After Shikamaru passed down the rings to Naruto, he gently placed it in Sakura's hand. The minister then asked her to read the vows she prepared.
And so Sakura did. "Today, I'm standing here to pledge my love for you unconditionally. I know I wasn't always fair to you. I know you deserved much more from me since the moment I met you. But when it comes to love, things can't always be perfect. My parents showed me that, and I thank them. Because I could realize you had my back, and always will. I opened my eyes to see you're the man of my dreams. The one who I grew to love even without thinking about it. My best friend, my partner for eternity, my true love. I am yours and will be forever" when finished she lifted her head to look at him.
Naruto smiled, though being a little teary, and then proceeded to read his own.
"My dear Sakura, as I'm standing here with you, I know I'm the luckiest guy in the world. I fell in love with you from the moment I met you. And though there were setbacks, once you got to know me, you never left my side. When I was too stubborn, or lost, you were there to bring me back. You're the only woman for me. Sensible, short-tempered, but with the gentlest grace. The healer of my heart, whom I owe my life, and my fidelity. With you by my side, I will never be alone. I pledge myself to you forever" Naruto finished, and glanced at her, the love of his life.
The minister then allowed them to make the traditional promise, as they had accorded before. At the same time, both uttered.
"I, Sakura, take you Naruto, to be my husband..."
"I, Naruto, take you, Sakura, to be my wife..."
"To have and to hold, in joy and in sorrow, in sickness and health, for richer or for poorer... I promise to love, honor, and cherish you, for as long as we both shall live" Both joined hands, and then, the minister proclaimed husband and wife.
Naruto tenderly removed the veil, and shared a kiss with his now wife.
People cheered on, smiled, and applauded, as the music sounded again. Iruka, Kakashi, and others were touched.
Obviously Sakura's parents were teary and proud. Ino clapped fervently for them, while standing right behind her best friend.
But of all, Tsunade was the most moved. She was the one who somehow was on behalf of Minato, Kushina, and Jiraiya. She knew them better than anyone around, and was deeply touched and immensely happy for the wedding between Naruto and Sakura. The three would love to be there.
After the wedding, everyone moved to the reception party in the ballroom. The newlyweds took a brief time to reunite with B, Gaara, Lee, Tsunade, and Kakashi. It was the first time since the end of the war that the seven were together.
They evaluated briefly the progress made by the world in 14 months, and also remembered Guy, Sasuke, and the Hokages, who were there back then. Naruto and Sakura were grateful to them, and made sure to let it be known in the toast.
He clinked his glass cup to call the guests' attention.
"Hi... I know Iruka may have something to say" Naruto glanced at his former teacher, who would be the one to dedicate a toast for the couple. "But I also just had a few words of my own. I understand some of you, even people who're not here, may think me and Sakura, my wife" he glanced briefly at her. "Rushed into this... that we're too young. And I know it... But I also know what I learned from what happened last year... Guy, Sasuke, my parents... They all gave their life for us, and I promised myself that won't be in vain. They knew the meaning of solitude, and what meant to live a life full of love... And I can't ignore that. Every minute of my life is a gift from them... Mom and dad, thank you... And all of you for coming... Iruka... Life is gift!" he finished his speech, raising the cup of glass.
Iruka raised his glass, and clinked with Teuchi and Ayame. The rest soon did the same, proclaiming "Life is a gift"
Then, he gave some words for Naruto and Sakura, telling how he saw them grow since they were little. He was proud of both for all that they did in the last few years, not only for Konoha, but also for the world. He remarked on Naruto's persistence, and Sakura's general kindness as a medic and as a person. "I wish you both a long happy life together... To Naruto and Sakura!" he ended up saying.
All the guests uttered "To Naruto and Sakura!" celebrating the toast.
After the toast, Hana, Ko, and Shino's parents went to congratulate the couple, and give a few words for the absentees.
"My brother wasn't in the mood for a wedding… He preferred to stay home with Akamaru and dad… But he sends you his regards" Hana said, almost apologetically.
"It's ok… We understand" Sakura was being polite, and honest. She never meant to push anyone to come, since she had agreed with the idea of a small wedding.
"Tell him that if he feels hurt over this, I never meant it… It's just a timing thing" Naruto added.
"He knows… Shikamaru stopped by to tell us it has to do with your future responsibilities…" Hana said, sincerely. "Anyway, I'm really happy for you… I think we all needed to see that there's light after the war"
"Thanks… It's a pleasure having you here" Naruto admitted.
Sakura agreed, and then Hana went back to her table, which she shared with nurses from the hospital.
Ko Hyuga then stepped in to greet the two. "I'm sorry Lady Hinata and Neji couldn't attend. They're still dealing with the responsibilities of leading the clan, and Hiashi's demise. And well…"
Naruto nodded in understanding. "You don't have to say it… I know it takes time, and I didn't give them much. That's my fault. Tell them I'm sorry"
"Thanks for coming all the way…" Sakura added, hiding pain in her tone.
Ko bowed to them, and then retired.
"Now I feel bad" Sakura said, with sadness in her voice.
"It can be helped. She'll need time" Naruto commented, as he saw Ko disappear among the crowd.
Shibi and his wife were the next ones to face them.
"Umm… Congratulations… Our son would have come only if his two best friends did, so that's why… Still, he is grateful to both of you, for helping to save the world. He has no doubt you'll become Hokage, Naruto…" Shibi said, gently.
"And Sakura, we all know that with you, Shizune and the 5th Hokage the hospital is in safe hands…" the woman added.
"Thank you both for coming… It's an honor" Naruto said, almost at the same time as Sakura.
The Aburames bowed their heads, and returned to their table.
Later, all the guests took their chance to dance. Shikamaru had a good time with Temari, Lee with Tenten, Ino with C, Karin with a young doctor, all doing their best. Kakashi shared a dance with Shizune, Iruka with Ayame, Genma with Anko, same as Kizashi with his wife. As they all traded places, and some guests like Gaara, B, Konohamaru, Sai, and others ate and talked, soon the adults took their turn. The music band was playing classic tunes now, which was perfect for them. Haruka had all planned.
Naruto gave a little push to Choji, who ended up dancing with a young nurse from the hospital, named Saki.
In one moment, Naruto spotted a certain blonde woman drinking a bottle of sake alone, and decided it was too unfair. She was wearing a green gown, with long sleeves, halt neckline, which highlighted her beauty despite her age. Besides, the make up she was using was enough to cover the few wrinkles she had.
She raised her head to see him, now standing before her, offering a hand.
"May I have this dance?"
"Naruto! I'm too old... for this..." Tsunade stammered, slightly blushed.
"No you're not" he insisted, and grabbed her by the arm, as gently as he could, leading her to the dance floor.
As Sakura, Shizune, and others watched, smiling, Naruto placed his left hand on Tsunade's waist, and his right holding hers. He looked straight into her brown eyes, and uttered "Now... Close your eyes, and imagine you're with Dan or Jiraiya... Whoever you choose, it's ok..."
The alcohol was probably affecting her, because she complied quietly, and soon got carried away by his moves, and the way she swayed naturally. She spinned a couple of times, without fear, feeling that a certain someone was there with her. If he was just Naruto, a ghost, or an angel, she didn't know.
Shizune couldn't help shed tears by the scene. How long Tsunade had wished to grow old along with Dan and dance at their son's wedding... Or even with Jiraiya, at this very same wedding, had he remained alive... The most firm believer would say that both of them were there, guiding Naruto's every move, as he danced with the blonde sad woman, making her happy, at least for a while.
When Naruto stopped to the music, Tsunade did as well, and opened her eyes. The dream moment was gone, though she still felt the magic in the air.
"Thank you..." she embraced him tightly, as tears rolled down her face.
"This was the least I could do..." Naruto held her tenderly, the only mother figure he had left, the woman his godfather always wished to dance with, and the one who had saved his life more than once.
When they pulled apart, Shizune and Sakura went to hug Tsunade, and accompany her back to the table. Hanako, Kurenai, and Mirai approached them to give some company. The three somehow composed the widow club.
"No matter the time, you always surprise me, Naruto..." Iruka said, standing close to him.
"It's no big deal... She deserved much more..." Naruto responded, still focused on Tsunade.
"But you made her life better..." Iruka stated, loosening up his tie.
"It's a process... You made my life better, and then I do the same for someone else..." Naruto sounded confident.
Suddenly, a young man interrupted their conversation.
"Naruto, if I may ask, where did you learn to dance like that?" Sai asked, clueless.
"When I was fifteen, Jiraiya took me to the Land of Frost… And there was a place with all kinds of dancers… Let's just say we both had a good time" Naruto said, with a curious smile.
"I see… I think I should visit that place. Thank you" Sai understood, before walking away.
"A place with dancers…" Iruka seemed to guess the rest of the story.
"Don't mention it to Sakura… She doesn't know the full version" Naruto whispered.
"Don't worry… Just, give me some pointings before my wedding" Iruka offered.
"Deal…"
As people enjoyed the party, some guests reunited and talked. Chojuro was busy in a conversation with Kurotsuchi and Akatsuchi, while Anko stole a minute from Kakashi.
"You look good... It worked" she commented.
Kakashi still felt a little exposed without the mask, but it couldn't be helped. "Yeah… Sometimes I forget though... And go for the mask again"
"I'm sure the guys would have loved to see you now..." Anko said, referring to Obito, Rin, and Guy.
"Surely... Especially Rin" he knew what his friend thought back then. Once she had seen the scar under his mask, and swore she would fix it. But she didn't live enough to do it herself.
Anko smiled, and then he commented, while looking at Shizune. "Umm... Anko, about what we did..."
"Kakashi... We agreed with this. What happens in Kushiro, stays in Kushiro" she interrupted, before walking away in her purple dress.
Kakashi sighed, and then went to join Shizune and Tsunade.
Sakura was already back on the floor dancing with her husband.
"Are you happy? I mean because of…" Sakura asked, with her head resting on his shoulder.
"How could I not? Wherever they are, I know they are happy for me… for us… And all I need is right here… With you" Naruto responded, still dancing slowly.
It ended up being a long night for everyone. B obviously had a moment of glory where he sang in public, and, to Naruto's surprise, it wasn't rap. No, he had a whole set for soul and R&B classic songs. The band soon adapted to the new singer.
B included tunes for everyone to move just a bit, even Gaara.
That's how it all went, the day of the wedding.
The days after, Naruto and Sakura went away for a honeymoon trip to a nice town at the coast of the Land of Fire. Though winter was coming, and the weather was cold, they spent the days near the beach, going to local attractions and tours. Naruto also had planned to go to another city, near to the mountains, to catch a different sight. Since Kakashi was the Hokage, and Shizune the director of the hospital, they had nothing to worry about. Naruto didn't regret at all choosing this time to get married.
In the meantime, at Konoha, Gaara and B stayed a couple of days to look around the village, and meet new people. They also paid a visit to the cemetery, to honor those who were buried there. The Kazekage wanted to leave flowers for Guy and Sasuke.
Temari extended her stay to spend more time with Shikamaru, and C did the same for Ino.
Naruto and his wife returned right in time to prepare for Christmas, their first as a married couple. And they got a surprise for those days: on December 24, Iruka and Ayame got engaged. Naruto had inspired him to get married, so he decided it was time.
That's how life continued in Konoha, at peace, with no sight of wars or enemies. Ame, Kusaga, and Oto were quiet, and respecting peace, despite not being aligned with the big nations.
Eight months after the wedding, in early September, Sakura went to the hospital with certain suspicions. She hadn't been using the contraception jutsu lately, after agreeing with Naruto that they could raise a child together. Though she wasn't so sure, he had expressed his reasons: the longer they waited, it would be worse given his future responsibilities as Hokage. And the last thing he wanted was to leave her alone at home with a baby. He was thinking about her, as usual.
And so they started trying in late June, after Iruka's wedding.
Aware of her recent symptoms of nausea, notable mood swings, and missing her period, she realized that chances were high. Naruto seemingly wasn't aware of it, and she chose not to say anything just in case.
Sakura made the test herself, and as expected, it came out positive. To make sure, she made a check up with Shizune, who ended up being the first person to know. The brunette woman didn't doubt and sent her back home immediately. Naruto had to know.
When he returned to the house by sunset, after a brief mission to a northern town of the Land of Fire, he found Sakura sitting on the couch, holding her knees. She seemed anxious, and turned to look at him.
"Hi... Why are you... Have you been crying?" Naruto asked, observing her swollen eyes.
She didn't answer right away, and gestured to him to sit with her.
He rushed to the couch, and faced her.
"What is it?"
"I'm pregnant..." she mumbled slowly.
"You... are..." he stammered, in shock.
"I ran the tests today... I'm sorry I screamed at you in the morning... I'm swimming in hormones" Sakura said, apologetically. She was sad because she didn't want to hurt him. She hated when temper took over her.
"So that means... I'm gonna be a daddy" he uttered the words, struggling to believe it.
Sakura nodded, happily. "And I'm going to be a mommy"
"I'm going to be a father..." Naruto repeated to himself.
"Yes! We're going to be parents!" Sakura exclaimed, pulling in for a tight hug.
"This is... I'm the happiest man in the world... Thank you" he responded, while holding her, and spinning around.
She let out a joyful laugh, before both landed on the couch again.
They shared a warm kiss, and then he pulled apart to raise a question.
"Who are we going to tell first?"
"Shizune already knows... So Lady Tsunade and Kakashi..." Sakura said, still excited.
"They'll hear from her... What about your parents?" Naruto asked.
"Mmm... I don't think we can leave them out... Besides, I'm going to be near 20 when the baby is born. They won't freak out" Sakura assured, trustingly.
"And so, Ino and the others?"
"I don't know... What do you think?" Sakura sounded unsure.
"I'd prefer to keep it between us for a while... Just in case" Naruto expressed hiding internal fears. What happened to Guy hadn't been forgotten by him.
"Just in case..." she repeated, unsure. She noticed the slightest fear on his face, so placed a hand over his cheek, rubbing it softly. The whiskers felt as always. "I'm a doctor... Shizune is a doctor. And Lady Tsunade is the top doctor... Nothing bad is going to happen"
He grabbed her fingers, and planted a tender kiss on the hand. "I know... We have to be careful"
"As careful as we can be" she leaned on, and pressed his lips with hers. She assured him everything was going to be ok, and soon he fell under her charm.
Six months later, on a cold day of February, Naruto and Sakura were pondering names for their baby, already aware that she would be a girl. They had been discussing it for a while, and though he had one name in mind, he didn't know how to bring it on. After all, it had been just a dream. He remembered well that in the Tsukuyomi, his older kid was a boy, but reality had turned things around.
"You still don't know where it came from?" Sakura asked, lying on the bed, with her head resting on his chest. She knew the three names of his dream, but only one made sense so far.
"It's that... Sounds nice. And I feel she can't have another name... Our Kohari... Kohari Namikaze Haruno... Namikaze Uzumaki Haruno Yamanaka" he thought out loud.
"Well, I like it too... And we have to figure it out... Why would your subconscious choose that name? You have to remember something" Sakura pondered.
"I don't know... It sounds familiar, but I don't know why..." Naruto said.
She suddenly got up. "Then it has to be from someone you know... Or someone important for... If Nawaki means a lot to Lady Tsunade... And she has no relatives with the name Kohari... Then, we have a few options. I know Shizune, and the name has nothing to do with her... Do you know if Kakashi's mother..."
Naruto shook his head. "Her name was Rena... I know Jiraiya isn't either. So the only one left is Iruka..."
"You are afraid to ask him, right?" Sakura guessed.
Naruto didn't confirm, so she realized that was it.
"I know it's a delicate issue, but this may be a good thing... It would be perfect" Sakura added.
"Ok... But let's go together. It'll be easier that way" Naruto resolved.
One day later, Naruto and Sakura stopped by Iruka's home, and at dinner, proposed their idea about the baby's name.
"Iruka... We were pondering names for the baby, and..." Sakura said, with a hand on her belly.
"We thought about naming her after people important for us..." Naruto continued.
Iruka seemed as muddled as Ayame.
"But she's a girl... Iruka may not suit her right..." he muttered.
"Actually, we were thinking about your mother's name" Naruto blurted, suddenly.
Iruka couldn't hide his surprise, as his jaw dropped. "My... mother..."
"Her name was Kohari, right?" Sakura asked.
"How do you..." he mumbled, still in shock. "Naruto, you remembered her name?" Iruka was surprised. He had once told him the names of his parents, but that was several years ago. Naruto was just a child and had asked him about them, by mere curiosity.
Naruto realized the moment Sakura raised the question, that it was right. They took the risk, but both were aware that chances were high. "I almost didn't... But the name came to my mind in a dream. And then I remembered" Naruto admitted. Half the truth was enough.
"So what do you think?" Sakura asked.
Ayame looked at Iruka, who seemed flattered but disturbed at the same time. He was in conflict.
"Why her name? You could choose one of your relatives, or... ask Tsunade, Kakashi..."
Naruto sighed. He had to make himself clear. "We agreed that Nawaki, after Tsunade's brother, would be a good name for a boy... But, for a girl... My grandmothers were Emiko and Marina... I feel they're too common. Besides, it's not the same..."
"My relatives' names remind me of old women... Not a baby. And this is important" Sakura said.
"She's our first child... And I want to honor you. I don't want your mother to be forgotten... If I become Hokage, I will be thankful to many people, but especially thanks to you... I wouldn't be here otherwise" Naruto was speaking from the heart. He knew that Iruka always stood on the sidelines, away from focus. Nobody from outside Konoha (other than B), knew him. Power and heroic feats are not everything in life. Iruka had something no one else had. And Naruto didn't want to ignore it.
"Namikaze Kohari..." Iruka uttered, after a while. "Or, Uzumaki Kohari... It still sounds weird you switching names..."
"Iruka..." Ayame had a hand on his shoulder.
When he lifted his head, Naruto and Sakura observed tears on his face.
"Thank you... Thank you so much" Iruka cried, and then the three went to hug him. It meant a lot. His mother wouldn't be forgotten. She would be remembered by one of the world's saviors, a future Hokage. She would be recognized for doing much more than just saving her son.
Around a year later
Past march, one day in early April, Naruto was holding her baby daughter tightly against his body with both arms. Wrapped up in a white clean blanket, she had her pacifier, and seemed calm, ready to sleep.
Standing on the balcony and staring at the blazing stars over the eastern neighborhood of Konoha, he sang, as he bounced his daughter gently.
"Hush, Kohari don't you... Hush, Kohari don't say a word... Daddy's gonna buy you a mockingbird. And if that mockingbird don't sing... Daddy's gonna buy you a diamond ring... And if that diamond ring is a brass... Daddy's gonna buy you a looking glass... And if that looking glass gets broken... Daddy's gonna bring you a little toad..."
Kohari looked in peace, soothed by her father's voice.
Naruto reached out to tenderly smooth a stray pink hair from the baby's temple. She got the hair of her mother. And the eyes, when opened, were dark blue. At first, he had thought that she had his eyes, the same as Minato. But as months passed, he realized that Kohari actually had Kushina's eyes. It was clear. Seeing this really made him even happier, as he felt that somehow he'd always see his mother in her.
As he turned around to go back to the bedroom, he spoke with a low voice.
"You're going to be a wonderful woman, like your mother, and your grandmother...
Maybe you'll have the same dream as I... Though it doesn't matter if you don't. I'll try not to spoil you too much... But if I have 30 years more of life, I want to share as much time as possible with you. And your mom, and maybe a little brother..."
Then he reached his bedroom, and placed her softly in the crib. Kohari quivered softly and her wobbly head tipped to the side of the blanket, without opening her eyes.
Naruto admired the little shape and the tiny hand folded around the neck.
"Hokage or not, what matters the most to me right now is you... Your mother feels the same... You're our world" Naruto leaned on to plant a soft kiss on her forehead.
Right then, he heard the door locking downstairs. Kohari seemingly didn't feel it, and he was glad.
Shortly after, Sakura emerged from the corridor, and whispered. "Is she down already?"
Naruto nodded apologetically, as she approached their baby.
"I missed her" she muttered softly.
Naruto then headed to bed, trying not to disturb his daughter's sleep. "Busy day?"
She turned around, and went to remove her clothes from the hospital. "Crowded... I wished maternity leave lasted longer"
"Well, once more medics can be trained, you'll have less work..." he responded, sitting comfortably. He loved seeing her when undressing.
"They're still not ready..." she referred to the newest bunch of residents, who were a few years younger than her. "Dinner?"
"There's pizza in the oven" he assured, admiring her figure. By this point, his wife's curves were prominent, driving him crazy. The fine white blouse she was wearing remarked her beauty. She always said that maternity had nothing to do with it. "When do you think it would be right to get her a little brother?" he smirked.
She knew what he wanted, but while studying his expression, saw something else. "What's the hurry? We're 20, and we already have a beautiful daughter..."
Naruto didn't know what to say. It wasn't the right time, not yet.
"Look, I know you're worried about when you become Hokage, but we still have time... Let's enjoy Kohari for now" Sakura continued.
He hid his inner worries, and nodded. "Ok... I know. I guess we can wait a little longer..."
Four years later
The shinobi world has progressed in some ways since the end of the 4th war. The Alliance between the five nations was as strongest as ever, and their leaders already shared a friendship given the years of meetings. Mei still acted as the 5th Mizukage of Kiri, even though she had married and bore a child. Kitsuchi held firmly to his position as the 4th Tsuchikage, and honored Onoki's last will by sustaining open dialogues with each village, including Konoha (which was still the farthest in terms of amicability). Gaara kept growing as the 5th Kazekage, held equal bonds of trust with all the villages, and Shukaku managed to win back people's trust (most of it). Darui had been appointed as the 5th Raikage four years after the war, since A had felt his time had reached the end of cycle. And he just reformed better the changes in the world.
As for Konoha, Kakashi was serving his sixth year as the 6th Hokage when realized that he couldn't hold on any longer. The world needed Naruto. It was his time. He could get along better with Gaara, Darui, and Mei, and possibly try to ease the relationship with Iwa. For Kakashi, that part was hard, especially because of his memories. The battle of Kannabi bridge still haunted him, so he hadn't visited Iwa during his whole reign. And Kitsuchi neither visited Konoha of course. They were allies, but not friends.
The other problem was that the union between the smaller villages was still on. Kakashi could only prevent others from joining, but Kusaga, Oto, Ame, and Taki remained unscathed. He couldn't find a solution, and neither could the rest of the Alliance. Plus, the Bijuus were also waiting for Naruto to step in. His little holiday was over.
And this was what he was afraid of. Fortunately, at 23 years old, he and Sakura had their second child, Nawaki, and could spend enough time with him before Kakashi announced his eventual resignation.
Tsunade got to hold the baby with her bare hands, and felt the happiest woman in the world. This Nawaki was going to live a long life. Naruto and Sakura would make sure of it.
But the now old lady wouldn't see him grow. Her time was coming, and the unstoppable disease had already expressed its symptoms. She required Shizune's help (who also had bore a child from Kakashi) to alleviate the chronic pain, the cramps, and the weakness. Plus, being on different kinds of meds didn't help at all. She was glad that the pain was bearable, and that the psychiatric symptoms, and on her skin, were under control. What was impossible to stop was the damage to the heart, and the fatigue.
And so, by the time Naruto's day came, she had to witness it in a wheelchair.
The jonins had approved Naruto almost unanimously (just like Kakashi). Kiba, Neji, Shino, and Hinata had already made amends with him after those initial distancement, as they got to understand all the responsibilities that would fall over him. Lee was already a full fledged jonin, as his deceased sensei, and had offered his full support to Naruto. Just like everyone else in the village.
May the 1st, was the day he'd take office.
It was a sunny, but windy day, so his hair was blown by the wind. He was standing next to Kakashi at the tower's terrace, when the ceremony started. Up there, were his closest people. Sakura holding the baby Nawaki in her arms. Kohari, almost five years old, right next to her mother. Iruka, Ayame, their son, and Teuchi (all by Naruto's exclusive insistence). And also, Shizune, and Lady Tsunade. Though he'd have liked Shikamaru and the others to be there too, then the terrace would be crowded. There was a limit, and he had to respect it.
The moment Kakashi passed him the hat, and the haori was the one everyone was expecting.
All the villagers cheered on, and his family rejoiced at the scene. Sakura, Iruka, and Tsunade were the most moved, as tears came from their eyes.
Kohari was confused, and gently tugged on her mother's arm. "Mom? Why are you crying?"
Sakura gazed at her daughter, still a bit shaken. "Because of your dad's dream..."
The baby stretched his tiny hands waving at his mother. Sakura bounced him gently, softly rubbing his cheek.
"But Dad said we were his dream..." Kohari replied, not understanding the emotion. Her pink hair was blown constantly by the wind.
"And he's right there, happy thanks to you... This day was his dream" Tsunade said, smiling.
Kohari turned to look at the old lady, who had always acted like her granny. It hurted her seeing how sick she was.
Naruto was waiting for the villagers to quiet so he could speak. Shortly after, with Ibiki's command, they did.
"My fellows of Konoha... It's an honor to be standing here, being acknowledged by you, to become the 7th Hokage of the Leaf. I promise to do my best to stay at the heights of my predecessors... I never forgot what they entrusted me with, 7 years ago at the end of the last war. I want you to know that I've been following my path with their advice in mind. So I'll keep going, looking forward to a better world" Naruto paused, staring at the crowd. "A lot of things have changed in the last few years... But there's still a long way to go. If we want to sustain peace, and prevent more tragedies, we have to learn from the past. Never forget the Uchihas... nor the Uzumakis... I never will. Let's keep building the village the Lord 1st wished for... Let's make sure that every child is ensured a safe life with their families... I know many of you had your own losses. And all of you know I have my own as well. But despite that, we can provide a better future for the younger generations!"
The crowd applauded at Naruto's speech, realizing he was truly being inspired by the past Hokages.
"This is just the beginning... I'll serve and protect you with my life from now on... I swear that Kurama, the red Fox inside me, will do the same... We made an oath. Don't be afraid! It's not a burden, it's a dream..." Naruto sighed, wondering what the villagers would think about it. He knew he had to mention Kurama, besides, everyone was aware of him. Gaara was going through the same in Suna after all. "Dreams are not easy to achieve, but if someone supports you, you can make it true, with hope and the will to never give it up... I have to say that I didn't make it here alone. I want to thank my family... My wife, and kids" he glanced at his wife, and children, smiling. "To the 6th... To Lady Tsunade, the 5th... Shizune, Teuchi, Ayame, Iruka..." he uttered each one of their names, to give them the recognition they deserved. Then, he looked down at his friends, who were gathered down the street. "To my friends... Superiors, teachers... All those who let me stay live here despite everything" Naruto added, referring to his childhood.
Some people were taken aback by the last mention, probably ashamed.
"And well... I can't forget those who died for us, and for me... I can't beat Kakashi's words about Guy" Naruto joked, and there were some laughs in the crowd. "But I hold him highly... More than you think... He could be standing right here today, but he chose not to... So I want to remember him, and also Sasuke, Itachi, to let you know that being a leader isn't the only way to be recognized... You all can be heroes on your own" he said, before turning to look at the Hokage rock faces, and stared at the one of his father. Then, he glanced back at the villagers. "My father was a hero even before he became Hokage... And my mother, and Jiraiya were his heroes... There's a lot you can do for other people... Like what Iruka and Jiraiya did for me when I was a boy... Don't ever forget that... This is the Will of Fire the old 3rd talked about... If we keep passing it, we'll be ok… Thank you all for listening" Naruto finally ended his speech, and bowed to the villagers.
People were overcome by emotion and gave a thunderous applause to their new leader. The message was much more deep than what anyone would have expected. Naruto didn't brag about a childhood dream like he used to. He didn't show it off to everyone, or talked about his own hardships in first person. He simply encouraged everyone with the learnings from the past Hokages, which was what saved him in the end.
Then, Naruto went straight to his wife and Kohari, who also ran to him for a family hug.
Tsunade, now holding the little Nawaki, smiled at the scene.
Iruka was in tears, given the way Naruto's speech ended. For him, for the 7th Hokage, Iruka was a hero. And that all started thanks to the 3rd, who just wanted to pass the Will of Fire to him.
Shizune was leaning on Kakashi's shoulder, also encouraged by Naruto's words.
Teuchi and Ayame couldn't believe that Naruto named them in front of everyone. They were flattered, but also happy. Feeding an orphaned lonely boy had been a blessing for them, and for him.
"Dad! I didn't understand..." Kohari said, apologetically.
After pulling aside from his wife, Naruto stared at his daughter. "Don't worry, in a few years, you will..."
"We have been practicing for a while, I have it all written" Sakura admitted, with a tender grin.
"Really?" Kohari asked.
Naruto then leveled his head to face Kohari's. "Yeah... But what you have to know for now, is that you're a hero... For me and your mom... You changed our lives, just like I changed my parents'..."
"I did?" Kohari insisted.
Naruto simply lifted his daughter to his shoulder, where she sat, and responded. "You know, I think I should save space for you at the office... So you can play when Sakura-chan is at the hospital"
"We can babysit her if you want..." Shizune said, while approaching them, along with Kakashi.
Naruto laughed. "You will... But I'm going to miss her... I have to see my little girl growing sometime during the day"
"Don't worry, I'll tell you how Hiruzen managed with Asuma and Hanako... They spent more time at the office than at their home..." Tsunade muttered, joyfully. Then she handed baby Nawaki back to Sakura.
"Then I'll feel left out..." Sakura said, smiling sadly, holding her son.
"We'll figure something out" Naruto assured.
"We'll change the shifts at the hospital..." Shizune said, confidently.
"I like the hospital..." Kohari protested. Lately she spent a lot of time there, just like Naruto when he was free.
"You like the hospital?" Ayame was stunned.
"I think she's going to be the youngest pediatrician of Konoha" Iruka commented.
"Or the 9th Hokage..." Kakashi appeared right from behind.
"Alright... She's too young to think about her future" Sakura blurted, defending her daughter.
"Yeah... Let her be" Naruto smiled at Kohari, who seemed a little overwhelmed by everyone.
And so the group left the tower's terrace, heading to the door that led back inside. Naruto had fulfilled his dream, his true dream, and was the happiest man in the world.
AN: Here ends the story. Next chapter is the Epilogue to clarify the fate of each character. The idea was to bring the closure Naruto needed in the original story. A family of his own so he would never be alone. Hokage to be finally acknowledged by people. Happiness despite the losses. I focused on the main events of his life prior to the ultimate goal, which included getting married, and becoming a father. And yes, I figured out (as some other fics showed), that Naruto hasn't a long life ahead (in comparison to a lifespan of 70 years) because of the Kyuubi. It's sad, if you let yourself feel the story.
Then, to make a few clarifications. The wedding was a nice moment to write, especially the vows, and the dance with Tsunade. Heartfelt, and emotional. For me, she's one of the best characters in the whole story. The widow doctor who lost it all. And probably the main NaruSaku shipper inside Naruto. About the absence of Kiba, Hinata, and Shino, I thought it was the right call. The wedding was too soon for them. And well, a small comment of my own: the thing of Hinata is a debatable matter. It's like all of us who had a crush and unreciprocated feelings. It's the most normal deal in the world, but also a way to grow up. About the characters, there are a lot of reasons why Naruto and Sakura belong together, and this obviously leaves Hinata and Sasuke out. But that's the most realistic outcome for the story, in my humble opinion. For those who disagree, you have the canon finale, Boruto, and the Shinden, so don't bother posting a review to bash this.
Kakashi deserved a better ending than the original, same as Shizune. It was an idea of mine, that they belong together. Both had a tragic past, orphans, and everything. Each one has a pet (hounds, pig), and are rather sad, lonely people. Plus, Shizune's appearance is not far off from Rin.
In the end, I tried to make Naruto a full grown man. Father and husband, a follower of his father's path. The dream of becoming Hokage is no longer childish, or something to brag about. It's a huge responsibility, he now understands. The Will of Fire, that's what he must pass as a legacy. As for the the final scene, I believe it should have been the last picture at the manga/anime: Naruto and his family, on the Hokage's tower terrace, below the Rock faces on the mountains.
