After Bruce has left to get ready for patrol, Shayera began thinking about how exactly she was going to follow him on patrol. Although her physiology enabled her to heal much quicker than most other species, and although she had in fact healed quite a bit to the point she could fly for short distances, she was unsure how far Batman would be going. She considered the option of hiding in the Batmobile but there were so many things that could go wrong with that option. For all she knew Batman had thermal readings in the car or it alerted him of how much weight was inside certain parts. Even if Batman didn't have those unnecessary accessories, Pennyworth was an issue. She began wondering how that conversation would play out:
Sir
Yes Alfred
It appears Miss Hol is no where in sight. Perhaps she followed you?
Highly likely.
Yup. Just like that she would be done for. But then, it hit her. A brilliant plan. She quickly made her way into the Batcave before Batman and rummaged through some of his drawers. She knew this guy had tracking devices everywhere. And...she we right. She then took her spot in Batman's desk chair and waited patiently for him to come down the stairs.
"Shayera?"
"Yes?"
"What are you doing down here?"
Shayera slowly stood from the chair and began taking small steps towards Batman.
"I just wanted to thank you for being so kind to me and opening up your home."
"It's really not that big of a deal."
"I disagree."
She then wrapped him in a hug, putting her arms under his cape and placing the tracker on his shoulder blade. Once she finished placing it, she quickly unwrapped her arms and pretended to blush (which wasn't that hard as she was already blushing a bit).
"See you when you come back."
And with that she scampered off and didn't stop until she was in her room. Closing the door, she slid to the floor and exhaled. Part one worked pretty well-although it was pretty embarrassing she thought to herself.
-time for part two.
Walking back downstairs, she found Alfred and told him she was feeling rather tired and was going to go and sleep. He promised not to disturb her and once again Shayera went back to her room and closed the door. She then opened the window, praying it wouldn't send off some alarm which she was almost 75% certain Batman had, and pulled out the tracking screen. Huh that's funny, he's barely left the house. I must've really confused him. He is really off his game! Then rolling her shoulder blades and stretching her wings out a bit she took off. At first she thought that this was pretty easy but after about 10 minutes of flight she was getting rather tired.
I should go higher so I can glide more and use up less energy. Luckily the wind was propelling her in the right direction too so things progressed smoothly. She checked the tracker again and noticed that Batman had reached his destination and Shayera was basically soaring over it. She began her descent, carefully of course because she didn't want to tip him off.
Huh, that's funny. This is the same building he found me on. Narrowing her eyes, she saw Batman brooding on one of the gargoyles, scrutinizing the streets below. She landing on the other side of the building and hid in the shadows. However, only a few moments after she landed, Batman jumped down and out of sight. Okay, crime is high on Gotham, he was only here a mom-
"How stupid do you think I am?" A voice said directly next to her ear.
She quickly jumped up, losing all composure, but being Hawkgirl, she recovered and faced him.
"Scale of one to ten?"
"You're not ready to fly this distance yet."
"You're not ready to fight yet."
"I've gone through worse."
"So have I."
"Why are you here exactly?"
"To make sure you don't get your butt kicked."
"If you didn't notice I just jumped you a second ago."
"Well I didn't think you'd be behind me! You just jumped off the building! How did you even get here!?"
"Trade secret. Point is I'm fine and I can easily do a patrol."
"You have a collapsed lung. That's not fine."
This guy is impossible! Shayera ranted in her head
"Your thoughts are so loud," Batman interrupted as he walked past her.
"I would love to smack you right about now."
"Well that would be counterintuitive because you came here to keep me from getting hurt."
"You are impossible."
As much as he wanted to play with this more he'd have to leave it for later as he noticed something creeping up behind Shayera. She's really off her game if she hasn't noticed that. A split second later though Batman was leaping forward and shoving Shayera to the ground.
CRACK
A bullet whizzed past the duo, and both of them got ready to fight.
"Good evening Batman. I didn't now you took on a side kick."
Deathstroke emerged from the shadows, gun in one hand, katana dragging against the roof, creating sparks.
"What do you want Deathstroke?"
"Money obviously. Some guy wants you dead so he hired me. I obviously wouldn't refuse, I have a score to settle anyway."
"What's this guys deal?" Shayera interjected
"Ah the sidekick has spoken! My deal is-"
"I'm not his sidekick."
"Then what is she?"
"None of your concern." Batman interjected
"Fine, I'll call her your trollop."
"What is a trollop?" Shayera asked Batman
"You don't want to know, its a very unflattering term."
"Oh he's gonna get it now."
"Enough talk Batman."
Deathstroke ran at Batman sword in hand. Batman braced himself ready to act and Shayera pulled out her mace. She was closed to Deathstroke; however once he reached her he jumped over her and continued towards Batman. He swung his sword, Batman evaded. That happened a lot after. Eventually Batman managed to grab Dearhstrokes arm and manipulate it in a way that caused him to drop the sword. It was a fist fight from there. Batman hadn't thrown a single punch at this point and was just blocking. Batman got bored and decided he wanted to start ending this. At the next block he threw a quick punch, forcing Deathstroke to block and adjust. This gave Batman a window. He dropped down and swept the assassin's leg. However Deathstroke was good he landed on his hands and did a back hand spring up. Then rushed forward to continue the fight.
It was going the same; however, Batman was slowing down. Deathstroke used this to his advantage and landed a blow to Batman's chest. He doubled over, coughing up blood.
"Killing an already injured Batman is of no glory to me. But I'm going to make sure you don't forget me. Next fight is going to be all out and I'm going to ensure it, by killing the trollop."
Batman reached for Deathstroke but he had already started sprinting towards Shayera. She knew she didn't have much chance as she hadn't done any sparring for a while. He leaped over her again and tried getting her from the back but she spun around and swung her mace. He pulled out his guns and started shooting. She began spinning her mace in a circle, blocking the bullets. After the cartridges emptied he pulled out his dagger and advanced again. Shayera was ready but not quick enough for what happened next. Deathstroke came in and feigned to get her arm before switching and slashing her in the upper torso. He then kicked her in the chest and sent her to the floor. He then stood over her, raised the dagger over his head and began bringing it down but Batman intervened.
He threw three explosive Batarangs which stuck themselves in Deathstroke body and then exploded. He flew away from Shayera and Batman used whatever time he just bought to his advantage. He grabbed her mace and helped her up before jumping down the building. Then he grappled to another and another until they reached a small alley. He reached down and lifted the sewer lid. Shayera took the cue and jumped in. Batman covered their traces and followed after her.
"So...why the sewers?" She asked through gritted teeth as her sword injury was beginning to intensify in pain.
"I have multiple routes to the Batcave. This is just one of them. Let's move fast, that needs to be stitched up."
After they had been walking for some time, Shayera's head began to hurt.
"Wait, I need a seco-."
Batman stopped and turned around just in time to catch her as she passed out.
Picking her up, he continued walking in the direction of the Batcave. Once there, he touched a brick on one of the walls and the wall disappeared to reveal the cave. Batman walked in, placed Shayera down on the medical table, and then cleaned his hands before getting the stitching equipment.
Wasn't I just doing this a few days ago? He thought to himself.
After finishing with the stitches, Batman pressed a button on his desk. A short while later the Batmobile rolled into the cave.
She needs to get back into the fight. I'll have a chat with Doctor Fate, he gets more visitors than I do and he might be able to convince her to get back in the league. It will be difficult for her, especially with Wonder Woman around but this is the only way.
Batman then lifted her off the table and walked her all the way back to her room. He set her down in the bed and walked up to the window she had used to follow him.
I'm glad I installed that alarm.
