Chapter Two

Returning home from that fuck all of a mission, Candy Cane paused as she heard giggling and the TV going. Lips twitching a bit, Candy Cane moved not towards the stairs she'd originally been heading for, but rather the living room. Poking her head inside, she caught sight of Calla sitting with Vivian on the couch with a pair of books that had definitely come from her shelf. Assassination Classroom was running in the background though she doubted either of the girls were paying it much mind as they kept their eyes glued to the books in their hands. Letting out a laugh, Candy Cane grinned as the two jumped and Calla's eyes went wide as her cheeks turned a delicate crimson color that brought out the freckles she'd inherited from Lily.

Leaning against the wall, Candy Cane asked, "Enjoying my books, Girls?"

Vivian nodded without looking the least bit ashamed for getting caught, "Yes, we are. Right, Cal?"

Slowly as her eyes dropped down to the book in her hand and back to Candy Cane's face, Calla nodded, "Y-yeah."

"Glad to hear it," Candy Cane jerked a thumb towards the workshop door she'd come through, "I'd put them away and turn the TV off, Girls. Jay and Pop will be back in Five minutes. While I don't mind you take a bit of time to enjoy yourselves, the boys will get a bit pissy if I'm not being strict,"

"Thanks for the warning," Vivian grinned at her and quickly turned off the TV.

"No problem," Candy Cane waved her off and began heading to get in the shower.

Just as she reached the bottom of the stairs, Calla was hugging Candy Cane earning a soft smile. Calla spoke softly, "Thanks, Cane. I-"

Turning to hug her back carefully, Candy Cane bit back a hiss as the healing injuries she had from Grimsley pulled. She spoke softly, "Kitten, I know you're getting a bit stir crazy. Just remember that your groundings going to be over soon."

"I know," Calla looked at her in concern, "Are you alright? From what I overheard, it sounded like a pretty serious thing,"

"We all got pretty banged up, but things could have been a lot worse," Candy Cane released her, "Now go get that book put back if Vivian hasn't already done it, I would also appreciate it if you'd start up dinner since it's getting close to time,"

Nodding lightly as she pulled away, Calla asked, "Pasta or Pizza?"

"How about steak and whatever sides you feel up to making?" Candy Cane retorted earning a nod.

"Sounds good, I'll get that started," Calla disappeared back into the living room.

Shaking her head, Candy Cane headed to her room and grabbed Lily's mirror with a soft laugh. Calling up her adoptive sister, she headed into the bathroom, "Any idea why I feel the lingering remnants of an emotional storm, Lils?"

"Your dumbass of a brother," Lily crossed her arms, "Snapped at her before he left. With everything going on lately and how irritated everyone's becoming, she made the tentative decision not to ask questions anymore,"

Eyes widening as anger and regret swept through her, Candy Cane hissed, "The fuck? I'm going to-"

"Vivian thankfully is the best friend she could possibly have and banished that thought from her head though I'd definitely have a talk with her," Lily smiled at the beginning then frowned towards the end, "Jay at the very least needs to say something. Our daughter is one of the most curious little kittens in existence, but unlike other hybrids, she has tact when asking questions,"

Snorting at the reminder of Liu's brat and Calla's tendency to stick random shit in the girl's mouth whenever she was rambling out too many questions, Candy Cane shook her head, "I'll talk to him. I'll talk with both of those idiots."

"I'll also speak to either of them if they actually bother to pick up my mirror," Lily rolled her eyes, "Jay seems reluctant for some reason,"

Giggling softly, Candy Cane offered, "Maybe he thinks you'll scold him for grounding Calla for so long. I mean even I thought three weeks was a bit much."

"Three weeks is nothing compared to the entire summer I had to deal with that one year," Lily grumbled as she crossed her arms, "Calla only has to deal with a couple more days and she'll be just fine,"

With Shukaku on her stomach, Calla laid on her bed listening to music and reading a book on runes before bed. Hearing a knock on the door, she tilted her head and glanced at it while calling out, "It's open."

Candy Pop stuck his head in making her grimace a bit and look away, "Little one, can I come in?"

Looking at her book, Calla muttered, "I said my door was open."

There was a sigh and some shuffling before the door closed, Calla jolted as Candy Pop took a seat on her bed. He spoke as she tried to focus on the book in her hands, "Little one, I...I'm sorry. Earlier, I snapped at you and it shouldn't have happened. It's just that there was very little time to move earlier though don't think I'm using that as an excuse. I'm not."

Glancing at him over the book, Calla felt the emotions from earlier trying to bubble up. She pushed them back, "All I was trying to do earlier was get a better understanding. Not try anything, Poppy."

"I...I know," Candy Pop looked at his hands, "It's just...Calla, ya know with everything going on at the mansion we've got to be more careful now," He looked at her and she nodded slowly, "You're not a little kid anymore. You pulling that stunt with Jeff's brat and Splendor's showed us that in a scary way,"

Sitting up causing Shukaku to let out a low whine as he moved to lay on her side, Calla nodded as she set her book to the side. She spoke while pulling her legs to her chest, "I figured that out when we got back to the mansion after the concert and you three were there. You never really explained why the concert was dangerous. We took every precaution. Smile, Ben, Toby, and Clocky were with us."

"Which was admittedly smart of you three to bring them along," Candy Pop smiled slightly before frowning, "The concert you all went to was in a city that a new Creep was found in. While you all were enjoying the concert, they were hunting down victims,"

Eyes widening at that, Calla breathed out a bit harshly, "Shit. That's why they wanted to get back so soon after..." Calla slowly uncurled her legs, "Are they in one of the isolation rooms?"

Shaking his head, Candy Pop told her, "After some evaluation, Slender as decided they were okay to come out. It's likely they'll be one of the Creeps that move on from us though."

"Ok," Calla nodded her head slowly, "But until we figure that out, I should avoid the mansion...right?"

"Right," Candy Pop let out a low sigh, "But the new creep wasn't my only stressor earlier, Grimsley...I wasn't expecting him to be brought up," Calla saw his expression fall and slowly reached out to touch his arm earning a sad smile, "He was a good friend back then. Martha and Grim both. You probably would've loved them,"

Tilting her head, Calla slowly shifted to sit beside him as she asked, "What happened...if it doesn't hurt too much?"

Sighing deeply, Candy Pop looked towards her window which revealed the starlit sky over a busy Tokyo street, "Over a hundred and fifty years ago, the world started to change in a drastic way that we couldn't have truly predicted. Humanity began to become more intelligent, the way information started to progress from one area to the next was steadily becoming more prevalent. We had to change how things were done or we'd be hunted down instead of being able to do as we're supposed to."

Calla realized where this was going, "They didn't want to..."

"Martha realized that change was needed and did to a point though it wasn't enough," Candy Pop shook his head softly, "Grimsley..." He looked at the ceiling as his eyes clouded, "He refused to change even with Martha threatening to seal him away for a time. For a time, I didn't see them and then Martha came around without him. She'd gone through with her threat and I could see that it broke something inside of her just a bit. Those two, Little one," He looked at her with an almost heartbroken expression, "Snapped together just as Cane and I did. Unlike us though, they were lovers and best friends. A married couple who had been through hell just to be together,"

"So Martha was alone?" Calla felt sad for the woman she didn't know.

Nodding slowly, Candy Pop looked back at his hands, "For a time, she was then like Grim someone sealed her away. I only learned later about it, but..." He sighed with a bitter smile, "A part of me thinks that I'd taken the cowards way out for not doing the deed myself-"

"Bullshit," Calla hugged him earning a startled expression, "Poppy, do you think I'd be able to seal away Viv, Luna, or Hermione? I might've made that control device for Leon, but I doubt I'd be able to actually seal any of them away," She felt him slowly hug her in return, "They were your friends. Best friends if what I'm understanding is correct. How anyone could expect you to seal them away is stupid? I-"

Arms tightening around her almost to the point she couldn't breath, Calla gasped and squirmed slightly before stilling as Candy Pop murmured, "Little one. Never change."

Flushing a bit, Calla burrowed her face into his neck as the lingering doubts in her mind were banished with those words.

Moving away from Calla's door with a slight smile, Jason looked at Candy Cane with a soft chuckle, "I think that Candy Pop has everything covered if what I've just heard is correct."

Shaking her head with a slight grin, Candy Cane replied, "True enough though you should still talk with her at some point, Jay. Just play catch up since I doubt that was the only thing bothering her."

"True," Jason headed for the stairwell with Candy Cane following him, "As they'll likely be busy for a bit, how about we head to Tender's bar? After that fuck all of a job, I think we deserve it,"

Snorting with a shake of her head, Candy Cane tipped her head back slightly, "Sounds good with me though I'll leave a note for Pop. It'll be nice to take a break for tonight."

"You've got two days before Sirius' trial, don't you?" Jason asked as Candy Cane paused at the bottom of the stairs to write a note for her brother and possibly Calla, "Worried?"

Shaking her head with a laugh, Candy Cane shot a smirk towards him, "Not at all. Between our prep and finally dropping that rat off last week, we're in the clear. I'm just anxious about the Kitten actually meeting Siri for the first time. Hell, Slender wanting to meet him makes me anxious even if I know Siri's cut out for being a Guardian even if I'm not sure which kind once he's healed up,"

"Well for tonight at least, we can take our minds off of that and simply enjoy ourselves," Jason led the way out of his workshop once Candy Cane had finished writing her note and they made their way to Tender's bar, "And it'll be just in time for Calla's grounding to end,"

"Somehow she always manages to get into trouble and out of it just before the most important events every summer," Candy Cane laughed softly as they pulled the doors open and walked inside.

Ordering and getting seated quickly, they were soon joined by Liu, Eyeless Jack, Masky, Hoodie, BEN, and Itsy Bitsy. Itsy Bitsy spoke as he settled at their table, "No Candy Pop?"

"He's with Calla," Jason answered earning a hum from the spider.

"How is she by the way?" BEN asked with a curious look in his eyes, "I know that Vivian's been saying she's bored, but..."

"She is, but she's keeping herself remarkably well-behaved all things considered," Jason shook his head as he remembered some of Calla's more interesting ways to relieve her boredom in the past, "With her grounding ending soon, she's doing everything she can to keep from getting into more trouble,"

"Speaking of her grounding ending," Eyeless Jack raised his glass, "Mind if I take her off your hands for the last couple weeks of summer? I know you were probably planning on having her help out with your own things, but I'd really like to take her under my wing like I'd originally planned,"

Thinking about it carefully, Jason nodded after a long moment, "Alright though she is to come home every night or morning depending on what you're doing. You're also to keep up on her mundane school work for all that she's in her last two years of study,"

"Of course," Eyeless Jack waved his glass.

"So that means all three of the kids are going to be running around doing whatever for the rest of this summer?" Liu asked earning a look from Jason, "I overheard Slender saying that Trender took on Luna from Splendor after the two met a couple days ago. Vivian is working under Tim and Hoodie. Hermione got snatched up by the Reader when she was visiting,"

"The Reader was here?" Jason hadn't known that solitary Creep had even left her bunker much less paid a visit to Slenderman.

"A couple days ago," Masky confirmed earning a blink of surprise, "Just popped in out of nowhere, Slender thinks she's planning on making another bunker here,"

"Well if any of the kids are safe with her, it would be Hermione," Candy Cane offered earning a glance from Jason, "The brat loves books to death and with her curiosity, the Reader will likely see her as another bookwyrm that just needs a little push in the right direction,"

"At the very least, she'll be protected," Liu shook his head, "Everyone knows that the Reader loathes Zalgo and everything that fucker stands for,"

"Not to mention, she only kills out of necessity or if someone purposefully damages a book in her sight," Itsy Bitsy chuckled softly, "Zalgo's people have learned that the hard way alongside any other mortal that has fallen to her claws,"

"So only Vivian and Calla will be around for the rest of this summer?" Candy Cane murmured softly.

"To a point," Masky said earning a couple stares, "Vivian's getting good enough and with how stable her mental state is, we're going to have her start helping us on a more...personal level like we'd originally planned to have Calla do. Slender's going to have Puppeteer check out her mental state every couple of days to a week just to be on the safe side, but..."

"Shit," Jason rubbed at the bridge of his nose, "They're all growing so fast aren't they? It wasn't even two years ago that we only had Calla to worry about and now we've got four? How time has flown..."

"And to think this all started because of the kitten," Candy Cane grinned lightly earning a slight smile from him.
