The twins were now 10 months old and Lorelai was full in the swing of planning their wedding/ vow renewal on their one year anniversary. She never wanted to be a crazy bridezilla but she now felt like she understood those women better. They didn't want anything big, it was just going to be the two of them at the alter. The whole town and all their friends and family were going to be there this time however. They were also getting married at the Inn which made the planning easier for Lorelai. Sookie was cooking and Mia was refusing to take any payment.
This weekend Lorelais thoughts were not taken by the wedding however. The following week was the annual stars hallow bid a basket festival however Luke was refusing to have anything to do with it.
"Luke!" Lorelai followed him around their kitchen, "please, please, please."
Luke smirked at her, "no, no, no. I've never bid on a basket and I'm not planning to start now."
"You've never had a wife either unless there's something you haven't told me."
"Nope. You're the only lucky woman."
"And you still won't bid on my basket! I'll make sure its filled with the loveliest healthiest treats you've ever seen."
Luke laughed, "how are you going to do that?" He leant back against the counter.
"Sookie will help me." Lorelai said maintaining eye contact with her husband.
"Oh, ok." Luke nodded, "good luck with that."
"Luke! Do you really want your wife going on a date with another mystery man?"
"You could just not do a basket?" Luke suggested.
"Oh no, you can't control me like that!" Lorelai joked with a glint in her eye.
"No?" Luke asked stepping forward and wrapping an arm around her waist pulling her against him.
Lorelai shook her head.
"Ok then." Luke said, "have fun on your date!"
"Luke!" Lorelai groaned resting her forehead against his chest.
"Its not fair." Lorelai pouted as she sat at a table in the diner with her children, "you have a boy to buy your basket and I don't and I'm MARRIED." She complained to Rory.
"Maybe my boy just loves me more than yours does?" Rory teased her mother.
"I think you're right." Lorelai nodded, "maybe I should use my basket as an opportunity to find a new man."
"Hmm maybe," Rory nodded in agreement, "but if you do could you stay on good terms with Luke, I like him."
"I'll try," Lorelai said seriously, "for you and the boys."
"Dada, dada," Logan started shouting to get Lukes attention.
"What's wrong son?" Luke said coming over to their table and ruffling Logans hair. This caused Logan to laugh, it was clear he didn't want anything other than to get his fathers attention.
"You girls ok?" Luke asked the older two at the table.
"I just think its terrible you won't do something nice with your wife."
"I know I'm terrible." Luke agreed easily, "besides that can I do anything?"
Lorelai and Rory both shook their heads.
The morning of the basket bidding Lorelai and Rory were busy in the kitchen packing their baskets.
"What are you doing?" Luke asked with Will in his arms.
"Wow, wow, wow!" Lorelai said dramatically, "you can't see the basket before the bidding!" She shooed him out.
"Im pretty sure that's brides before weddings." Luke said but left, "I'm going to work, Logan is still asleep." He handed Will over to Lorelai and kissed her goodbye.
"See you later." Lorelai kissed him back, "don't forget your wallet."
"Won't need it." Luke called back as he went out the door.
That afternoon Lorelai stood with one eye on the biddings taking place and another on the babies crawling at her feet.
Rorys basket came up first. There were no surprises when Dean bought her basket and she skipped over to him to join him on a picnic date.
"Where's your guy then?" Sookie asked waving over at Jackson who seemed to be ignoring her.
"Says he's not coming." Lorelai said matter of factly although she didn't sound worried.
"What?" Sookie asked, "who's going to bid on your basket then?"
"We'll see." Lorelai said bending down to stop Will from eating a weed he had picked out of the grass.
Lorelais basket came up and she was worried when Kirk and a guy she didn't know seemed to be the only people bidding on it. She started looking around worried when she spotted Luke at the back of the crowd.
She grinned as Luke waited until the last minute to step forward and bid on her basket.
When he won it she ran forward to great him with a hug after he had collected it, "I knew you would come." She said confidently walking back towards her babies she had left with Sookie.
"Yeah yeah, I just paid $30 for the worst food in my own kitchen."
"Yes you did." Lorelai kissed him, picking up Logan she asked, "where do you want to eat? I think the gazebo is free."
"Im not eating this." Luke laughed picking up Will.
Lorelai looked disappointed. She opened her mouth to say something but Luke cut her off.
"I'll get us some proper food from the diner and then we can eat."
"Ok," Lorelai grinned now, "ill meet you at the gazebo. Oh and bring brownies!" She strapped Logan into the pram and then took Will off Luke and strapped him in too.
Luke arrived at the gazebo shortly after Lorelai had let the babies out of their pram. She was standing behind Will holding his hands to let him stand up and walk slightly.
"They're getting big." Luke said drawing Lorelai to his presence.
"I know." She set Logan down letting him crawl around with his brother and sat down on the ground next to him "won't be long until they are one."
"What are you doing?" Luke stood looking down at her.
"Having a picnic." She said like it was obvious reaching up and tugging on his hand so that he would sit too.
"I am not sitting on the ground." He said like it was the most ridiculous idea in the world sitting down on the bench.
"Why? Luke?" She pouted at him, "its a picnic you're suppose to sit on the ground."
"Says who?"
"Every picture you've ever seen of a picnic shows people eating on the ground."
"Yes, and every time I have seen a picture of people eating on the ground I've thought, what the hell are you people doing sitting on the ground? Spring for some beach chairs, you cheapskates."
Lorelai rolled her eyes but stood up and sat next to him, "you're impossible."
"I can't believe how much my life has changed in the last year." Luke said changing the subject as he started emptying the food bags.
"Good change right?" Lorelai asked unwrapping her burger.
Luke paused, "I can't believe you have to ask that."
Lorelai held up her burger in surrender, "hey! Just checking."
"Yes good change." Luke clarified.
After a moments silence Lorelai said, "You know, your burgers actually taste better outside."
"Good. Next time the roof in the diner's leaking, I'll just rip the stupid thing off."
Lorelai laughed, "So this is nice, huh? Come on admit it." She prodded him with her finger.
"Never."
"Admit it, you'd much rather be sitting out here with your family than be inside working."
"You've got me there." He admitted looking between the babies and her.
"I knew it." Lorelai said victoriously picking at her fries, she held out out to him, "fry?" She offered.
Luke picked a carrot stick out of his food, "carrot?" He offered in return.
"Impossible!" Lorelai scoffed.
"Right back at ya." He plopped the carrot into his mouth, "Can I ask you something?" He almost seemed nervous now.
"Course you can." Lorelai said easily.
"Where do you see our future going?" He was definitely nervous now and Lorelai noticed.
"What do you mean? We are getting married in two months. You can't pull out now, I've put in too much work, I won't let you." Lorelai tried to joke.
"No, no, not that." Luke said not going on with the joke.
"What then?" Lorelai asked trying to be serious, "you've lost me."
"Say in five years time, or 3 years time even, where do you see us?"
"Well," Lorelai tried to think, she was so caught up in her life right now she hadn't thought about the future too much, "Rory will be off to college, changing the world. The boys will be starting school. You'll have the diner. Maybe me and Sookie will have finally opened our own Inn." Lorelai listed off.
"So that's it? We just carry on as we are?"
"Luke, you just said you were happy! Where is all this coming from?" She asked confused and a little worried.
Luke didn't say anything for a moment then decided he should just ask the question he wanted to ask and blurted out, "Do you want anymore kids?"
Lorelai formed an 'o' shape with her mouth but no sound came out. After an elongated silence she said, "you don't have to be nervous talking about that kinda stuff with me, that's not how this works." She smiled at him and placed a hand on his leg hoping that would calm him down.
"Ok, but do you?" Luke pushed on, now that it was out there he was braver.
"I dunno Luke," Lorelai admitted, "life has been so hectic recently. I was just starting to come to terms that I would have an empty nest once Rory goes off to Harvard and now I've got a very full house. I haven't thought about adding to it."
"You haven't thought about it." Luke said softly, Lorelai could tell he was hurt by this.
Lorleia squeezed his leg, "hey," she said softly, "that doesn't mean no. It just means they aren't even 1 yet. I do not what 3 under 2. Maybe in a few years, yeah another kid would be nice but lets just think about right now right now, ok?"
"Ok." Luke nodded.
Luke then focussed on trying to give Logan and Will the carrot that Lorelai had rejected.
"Luke danes the family man," Lorelai sat back and smiled, "who would have thought."
Luke turned and gave her a look, "you know I love our family. You, Rory, Will and Logan. You are everything to me."
"No Luke!" Lorelai leaned forward quickly and put her hand on his shoulder, "I just meant this time last year, I could have never imagined any of this. And look at us now."
"It is pretty remarkable," he admitted, "all because some girl could see our future better than we could."
"Do you ever think about her?" Lorelai asked now leaning into his side.
"Who? The lady who gave them to us?"
"Yeah. Her. Sometimes I look around and see people I don't recognise and I think any one of them could be her, y'know? It wouldn't be strange if she came back every once in a while to see them. She went unnoticed by us before and she was basically stalking us."
"I guess she could," Luke admits, "but I don't think she would ever approach us, or them. She seemed pretty keen to get her pregnancy over with and move on with her life."
"Wow," lorelai said trying to lighten the mood, "this got deep for a picnic."
Just as Luke was about to respond Sookie came running over, "I'm engaged!" She shouted at Lorelai.
"Oh my god!" Lorelai shouted back jumping to her feet and running over to Sookie, "tell me everything!" She demanded sitting on the steps to the gazebo with Sookie.
That evening Lorelai and Luke were getting the babies ready for bed Lorelai paused.
"What is it?" Luke asked her noticing how suddenly she stopped.
Lorelai ran to the window opening it.
"Hey!" Luke said as she opened the window, "its freezing!"
"It's going to snow." Lorelai said in excitement her head out the window.
Logan started screaming.
"Lorelai." Luke sighed, "its too cold to have the window open."
Lorelai closed the window and went to Logan who was stood up in his crib and screaming, his face going red.
"Don't cry baby," Lorelai said in a gentle voice, "its going to snow!" She said in an excited voice, "Our first snow! Your first snow!"
"Its too early for snow." Luke argued, "I've seen 3 weather forecasts today, not one mentioned snow."
Lorelai smiled at Luke knowingly, "I'm going to tell Rory to get ready." She walked towards the door with a calm Logan in her arms.
Luke held out his arm to stop her, "We need to get them to bed."
Lorelai paused looking directly at Luke, "its the first snow. We need to all go out. Me and Rory always walk in the first snow."
"Lorelai, im telling you, its not going to snow."
As soon as Luke finished speaking snow started falling outside.
"How did you do that?" Luke asked shocked.
"I can smell snow." She said simply.
"It's frozen water, no one can smell snow."
Lorelai grabbed his hand deciding not to have this argument, "We need to go for a walk, all of us."
"THEY need to go to sleep." Luke looked between the two babies who were both still awake looking between their parents curiously.
"They're still awake, 15 minutes will make no difference." Lorelai dismissed. She then sidestepped Luke with Logan still in her arms and ran downstairs shouting for Rorys attention.
Luke sighed and picked up Will following her downstairs.
When he got downstairs Rory and Lorelai were both pulling their shoes on.
After Lorelai had her shoes on she took Will from Luke and set him on the sofa next to Logan.
Luke took the opportunity to put his shoes on then grabbed his coat and Lorelai's.
Rory was pulling her coat on while Lorelai was bundling up the babies in winter coats.
They went outside and walked down the street.
"Is this good?" Luke asked holding Will close to him to keep him warm.
"Perfect!" Lorelai grinned holding back so that she was walking next to Luke with Rory ahead of them, "the perfect snow walk with my perfect family." She said softly to him. Luke couldn't help but smile then too.
They walked into the centre of town.
"We should really get back home." Luke said shivering now, "the boys need to get to sleep."
Just as Luke finished Logan leant forward in Lorelais arms and started clapping his hands.
"Awww," Lorelai grinned, "He loves it!"
"Everyone loves snow mum." Rory said like it was obvious.
"Yep." Lorelai agreed with her looking directly at Luke, "everyone."
Lorelai set Logan down on the ground.
"Lorelai hes going to get wet and cold." Luke complained.
"Relax Luke. Let him enjoy it."
Luke nodded and the gasped, "He's walking! He's walking in the snow!"
Logan walked at least 10 steps and then fell on his butt. The cold shocked him and caused him to let out a loud cry.
"Its ok son." Luke said handing Will to Lorelai and rushing to Logan, "you did so good!" He picked him up and threw him in the air catching him in a hug. The excitement from Luke caused Logan to calm down.
Lorelai rushed to their side, "magical things happen in the snow." She kissed Logans head then turned to Rory who was also grinning, "you know you took your first steps in the snow too! My children know that snow is special."
"I know mum," Rory laughed, "you tell me every year."
Lorelai stepped back and put Will on his feet to see if he would walk too. Will immediately burst into tears and reached his arms out to be picked up.
"Its ok baby." Lorelai said picking it up, "you're just tired, we need to get you to bed." She rocked him against her.
"Where did you get that bright idea from?" Luke asked sarcastically.
"Shut up!" Lorelai joked back walking back towards the house.
The next day they woke up to a blanket of snow.
"Its so beautiful, isn't it?" Lorelai said standing in the window of their bedroom as Luke got ready for work.
"It looks nice." Luke agreed coming to stand behind her, "it can be a pain though."
"Blasphemy!" Lorelai gasped, "don't say that about my baby!"
"I thought you didn't want 3 babies?" Luke teased.
"Oh stop it!" Lorelai laughed and gently swatted at his chest, "I'm going to get my babies." She could hear that Will and Logan were starting to wake up.
She went for Logan first as he was standing in his crib when Lorelai arrived, Will was still lying down.
She plucked Logan out of his crib and changed him before placing him down, "can you still walk baby?" She asked him as she walked over to Will to get him up.
Logan took a few steps after her and fell down. He didn't cry this time but just sat still.
Lorelai got both the boys ready for the day then brought them downstairs for breakfast. Luke and Rory were already in the kitchen eating before they left for the day.
"Have you seen all the snow this morning sweets?" Lorelai asked Rory sitting down next to her.
Rory nodded then stood up with her toast in her hand, "I should go. Im going to get the earlier bus, the roads will be slow."
"Ok," Lorelai kissed her cheek, "have fun."
"Stay safe." Luke added.
Rory smiled at both of them and then left for school.
"I have to go too." Luke said and kissed Lorelai goodbye.
"We'll see you later, come in to see you." She gave him another kiss.
"Looking forward to it." He said leaving.
"And then there were 3." Lorelai said to the two babies who just looked at her. Will then threw his spoon covered in oatmeal on the ground laughing.
"No baby, you cant do that." Lorelai said gently tidying up after him.
After a few hours Lorelai got the boys ready to go to the diner for an early lunch. Because they had time they walked slowly into town. Once they got into the centre of town Lorelai paused and let the boys out of their pram to play in the snow before they went into the diner.
Logan took a few more steps and fell on his bum again. He looked like he was going to cry again but Lorelai smiled a huge grin at him and he smiled back.
Lorelai turned around just in time to catch Will take his first steps. Lorelai caught him as he fell, "I knew you wouldn't let Logan show you up."
Lorelai entered the diner soon after pushing the boys in their pram again with excitement all around her.
"I wasn't expecting you here so soon." Luke said greeting her by the door with a kiss and then helping her get the boys settled.
"Do you have something to show daddy?" Lorelai directed at Will.
Luke looked between Lorelai and Will confused then smiled, "Did you walk?" He asked Will.
Of course Will didn't respond but when he looked at Lorelai she nodded. He grinned at her and picked Will up placing him on his feet. He took a few steps back and Will stumbled towards him.
Luke picked him up and then sat back down with Lorelai, "I can't believe they're walking!" He said.
"I know!" Lorelai grinned, "all my children took their first steps in the snow! The odds of that happening have to be so small."
