Vlad King's Green Bean
Chapter ninety-six: Empire Undead (part three)
Habuko Mongoose, Yo Shindo, Tatami Nakagame, Shikkui Makabe, Itejiro Toteki, Saiko Intelli, Inasa Yoarashi, Nagamasa Mora, Seiji Shishikura, and Camie Utsusshimi were all working in a mass patrol group as per orders from the Regime. The ten pro heroes could understand why there had to be a need for such security; they had all seen the video that got out of five zombies appearing in the city. Real, actual zombies. Thankfully the zombies were all captured and taken away, presumably to be studied so that more info could be gathered, thus meaning a plan can be formed. But until then, with so many unknowns going about, the Regime decided that things had to be done as carefully as possible.
"What all knowledge is available on the zombies thus far?" Inasa asked as he turned to look at Saiko.
"The ones that were captured were seen trying to use their quirks but they wouldn't function," Saiko said, "I recently got it that the zombies do indeed still have their quirks, so there's heavy evidence that a zombie's quirk either works differently or won't work period despite still being there. But there might be some quirks that this rule doesn't apply to, so we must be cautious."
Seiji noticed that Habuko seemed a bit out of sorts, so he got her attnetion. "You okay, Mongoose?"
"Oh, I was contacted by Tsukiyomi," Habuko said, "He was the guy that my old friend Tsuyu was being courted by back when were all students, although I got into a school other than UA. He wants me to come to his out, but wouldn't say why. All that I was able to get from him was how he sounded like I was going to like whatever it is that he has in the works."
Camie was about to speak up, but she got cut off when Yo said, "Hey, that dirty-looking woman over there with her back to us is dressed like how Emi-sensei had dressed." Indeed, Yo was pointing to a woman, her back to the heroes, who stood a ways away. Said woman wore a getup like the late rogue pro hero Ms. Joke.
Tatami scowled. "It's one thing to dress up like someone who had gone rogue and worked against the Regime. But to dress up as a beloved teacher we had back in our school days? Not cool, man." Looking to the dirty woman dressed as Ms. Joke, Tatami shouted, "Oi, Ms. Joke cosplayer! You do know it's illegal to cosplay as known rebels even if said rebels are deceased, don't y-"
"GRRRUUUHHHHAAAAAHHHHH!"
The heroes were all surprised, as well as scared and horrified, when the dirty woman turned around and revealed she wasn't a Ms. Joke cosplayer, she was Ms. Joke. Or rather her dead body reanimated as a zombie, still bearing the wound that had led to her death so many years ago. The heroes were scared, Yo and Tatami especially so, of the zombie Ms. Joke, but it was one undead against ten living. They had the advantage, which would allow for them to overwhelm the undead rogue pro hero and capture her.
But they were not as prepared as they thought; zombie Ms. Joke aimed her right hand at Saiko while a blue aura cloaked her undead form. When that happened, Saiko with a look of absolute frightened horror on her face fell to her knees while clutching the sides of her head as she screamed bloody murder, the tone making it clear that she was frightened and scared beyond measure. "That's Emi-sensei's Outburst quirk," Yo said, "But it's supposed to make people laugh. Why is it horrifying Intelli with sheer fright inste-"
"GRRRUUUHHHHAAAAAHHHHH!"
Yo was cut off when another zombie came out, having been summoned by the loud horrified screaming of Saiko. This new undead was the zombie of the late Taishiro Toyomitsu, aka Fat Gum. He had died skinny when he took a blow that he could have shrugged off easily enough if he hadn't burnt up his fat beforehand, and he was only identified by his incredibly baggy hoodie he was wearing. More zombie heroes came shambling out due to being summoned by Saiko's frightened screaming; all four of the Wild, Wild Pussycats, as well as the recently slain pro heroes Chilly Chilla, Monkey Man, and Palafin.
"...Shit," Inasa swore, "More zombie pro heroes, and a few of them got into the top ten. Hell, Fat Gum there was the number one hero until he was displaced by Green Bean rising to the spot."
"And my quirk doesn't work on them, even though I've been trying to paralyze Tiger," Habuko said, her tone wary and worried, "I'm more or less dead weight here, no pun intended."
Seiji scowled bitterly. "With one whose quirk doesn't work on the undead and one still screaming her head off, we're at a disadvantage here, even though there's still technically ten of us to their nine-"
*RRRRRRROOOOOOOAAAAARRR*
Seiji was cut off when he and the other living heroes with him heard another undead shout. But it didn't sound like it came from a zombie who was human. No, it sounding like it came from a zombie that not only could be described in some circles as a monster, but was made all the more monstrous due to being brought back to life as one of the living dead. The living heroes, with Saiko barely starting to calm down, then heard the sounds of flapping wings, wings that sounded like they belonged to Emperor Dabi's bodyguard Felgrand.
But Felgrand wasn't the only dragon who had ever soared the skies of the living world. The living heroes felt their hearts sink as Ryuko Tatsuma, the late Dragon Hero Ryukyu, came flying in still bearing the wounds Felgrand had inflicted to claim her life, giving a spine chilling, skyward dragonic roar. Just as Fat Gum had died skinny and remained as such, Ryukyu had died a dragon and remained as such. Before the living heroes could do anything, they heard a living woman's voice call down from Ryukyu's back, "Ms. Joke, use your quirk on Mongoose!"
Soon enough, Habuko collapsed into a fetal position as she screamed bloody murder, horrified beyond comprehension due to being subjected to the effects of Ms. Joke's corrupted Outburst quirk. "The rest of you down there!" the same woman's voice called down, "Kill the heroes before you! They had dared to serve as the lap dogs and attack dogs of the Regime, so like all rabid dogs they must be put down!"
The living heroes were startled as the zombies all began rushing them as quickly as their undead forms would allow. Saiko immediately bolted, having been horrified beyond what ought to be possible. "The zombies got to Saiko!" Inasa said, "But I can't blame her! These zombies are utterly horrifying, Ms. Joke especially so given her quirk had become corrupted by the process of her being raised from the dea-"
Inasa got cut off when he was rushed by zombie Fat Gum, who tackled him to the ground and proceeded to pummel him.
Izuku was rushing to the scene, using a combination of his quirks from One For All to effectively fly, when he heard a group of ten pro heroes were attacked by a group of nine zombies, then a tenth zombie showed up with a living woman supposedly riding on her back. The reason why the woman was riding on the tenth zombie's back was because the zombie was Ryukyu, having been reanimated alongside various other dead pro heroes. There was now a zombified dragon on the loose in the city.
"I think Fuyuki said that the fantasy stories he and Kirishima's son reads have a term for zombie dragons," Izuku muttered to himself, "Dracoliches, I believe it was." It horrified Izuku to know that one of his pro hero mentors was now a mindless living dead, and one of the worst kinds of living dead that there could possible be. It was one thing to deal with human undead, if sufficient precautions were taken and there were few enough human zombies, then they could be dealt with easily enough. But a large group of human undead, plus a dracolich on top of that?
Talk about an undead nightmare.
As Izuku flew towards the center of where the undead burst was reported, he was hailed down when he heard someone shout, "Hey Green Bean, down here!" Izuku looked down and saw some police who were setting up a perimeter. Izuku landed, went up to the officer who hailed him down. "We got the entire area with all of the zombies in it quarantined," the police officer said, "No one can get in, and the zombies can't get out."
That ought to keep in the zombies aside from Ryukyu, Izuku reasoned. Gently shaking his head, the number one hero went on, "What all do we know?"
"The patrol group of pro heroes led by Saiko over there," the police officer said as he paused to gestured to Saiko who wore a shellshocked look on her face as a blanket was over her and she held a warm mug of some drink, "Encountered the first zombie, the late traitor Ms. Joke. Saiko says that Ms. Joke's quirk works differently than it used to, as it made her feel overwhelming fright and horror rather than make her laugh. As soon as she recovered, Saiko bolted from the scene, leaving her nine fellows behind to deal with the zombie Ms. Joke and other zombie pro heroes."
Izuku was not all that willing to blame Saiko for being so un-heroic; she had been subjected to the effects of what sounds like a corrupted Outburst that inflicted overwhelming fright rather than overwhelming laughter. And there was multiple zombies now from the sound of it. "Did Saiko give any details on how the corrupted Outburst made her feel?" Izuku asked.
"Only that it made her heart race a mile a minute," the police officer said, "Her heart health is strong, but she theorizes that if someone with lesser constitution than her is subjected to what you've dubbed as the corrupted Outburst, then the horrifying fright could kill them. That being said, older persons as well as persons who have any preexisting conditions ought to be kept away, along with persons at high risk."
Izuku nodded in understanding, realizing that zombie Ms. Joke needs to be taken out ASAP. "Anything else, officer?"
Gesturing to Izuku, the police officer explained, "Saiko heard someone giving orders from the back of zombie Ryukyu while flying in the air. Said someone was also shouting lines that made it clear they're aligned with the Old Rule Rebellion, and also said person was able to give orders to the zombies which were carried out when they were given."
Izuku felt sick hearing more confirmation that Ryukyu is one of the zombies; he couldn't imagine how Ochaco, as well as Nejire-senpai, would react to hearing, much less seeing, that Ryukyu is one of the zombies. But Izuku became disgusted as well, given that the officer got it that not only is someone going about controlling the undead, but said someone is aligned with the Rebellion. This meant that Shouta and the others were ultimately the ones behind desecrating the dead and using them to carry out more acts of terror.
Izuku's opinion of the rogue underground hero had gotten pretty low in recent events, what with him being party to multiple kidnappings of kids in Fuyuki's class, a few of those instances seeing Fuyuki himself taken hostage. There was also the initial zombie appearance, where Bakugo, Mineta, Sato, Koda, and Tenya were raised as living dead and Fuyuki and some schoolmates were the first to confront them. Not only was Fuyuki and some schoolmates endangered yet again, but this time it also had the side effect of desecrating the memory of Bakugo and other late schoolmates of Izuku's.
At this point, Izuku was wondering if Eraserhead was actively looking for more and more lines to cross so that he could cross them.
Looking to the police officer, Izuku asked, "How many zombies are in there?"
"We received visual that the rest of Saiko's squad had all been killed by the zombies," one police officer said, "And a living woman was seen landing Ryukyu and getting off to raise the slain heroes as more zombies. That was the first visual we got over an hour ago. Since then, we've gotten reports of at least a hundred new zombies, and some members of the Old Rule Rebellion had been spotted going in and meeting up with the woman raising the zombies."
"A woman is raising the zombies," Izuku said. From that, Izuku was figuring that this form of zombification isn't like most examples seen in fiction, where the zombies can repopulate themselves by 'turning' living humans. No, the zombies from the sound of it could only be made if that one living woman raises them from the dead. Izuku was about to speak up to ask the officer for more details, but he got cut off when he heard Ochaco call out to him; he turned and saw his wife come floating down in with Nejire. "You girls heard about Ryukyu, huh?" Izuku said when he saw the looks on the faces of the women.
"They raised Ryukyu from the dead as one their mindless zombie puppets," Nejire swore, looking and sounding angrier than she ever had before, "They're gonna pay for besmirching Ryukyu's legacy like this."
"Well then that means you'll have even more reason to hate the Rebellion," Izuku said, "The woman who is raising the zombies is allied with them."
Both Ochaco and Nejire looked an even mix of shocked and angry. "The Rebellion is behind this?!" Ochaco practically exclaimed.
Looking curious, Nejire said, "Wait, you said that a woman is raising the dead as zombies."
"We actually just got a video feed of the woman in question," the police officer said, "It shows a clear visual of what she looks like, although it was taken in the middle of her reanimating the body of Yo Shindo." Izuku and the ladies huddled up to watch it as the video was played, showing a starved looking blonde haired woman raising the slain Yo Shindo as one of her mindless zombie thralls.
Pointing at the woman while the video was paused, Nejire looked at her in suspicion. "She looks familiar, but I can't quite put my finger on it..."
As Nejire looked at the video, a female officer came up. "Sir!" the female officer said to the first officer, "We just got an identification on the woman seen raising the dead in the quarantined area! Her name is Desumi Yango, age thirty-seven, a resident of Agatsuma Town."
"Yango?!" Nejire practically exclaimed, then turned to look back at the now identified (to the heroes) Desumi in the video. "That's the fatty from the first day of my first year as a UA student?!
Ochaco turned to look at her senpai. "You know her?"
Nodding once, Nejire said, "Yeah, I remember Yango, although my memory is a tad fuzzy here and there. She was in me and Tamaki's homeroom on the first day of our first year when we were UA students. We had Aizawa-sensei as our homeroom teacher-"
"I'm sorry," Izuku spoke up.
Nejire nodded in understanding, knowing what Izuku meant. "Anyway, he had us do the quirk assessment test, and Yango placed in the upper half of the class despite not once ever displaying her quirk. What made her high placement without using her quirk all the more amazing was how Yango was super plump and fatty at the time, weighing at least one-hundred and ninety kilograms from what I was able to figure. I later got confirmation she weighed an even two-hundred kilograms."
Ochaco turned to look at the image of Desumi in the paused video, showing her in the middle of reanimating the slain Yo Shindo. "...She does not look like she weighs two-hundred kilograms now. In fact, I'd say she looks like she needs to gain weight rather than lose it."
"What happened after the quirk assessment test?" Izuku asked.
"Aizawa-sensei asked Yango about her quirk, and she was able to lead him to a science classroom because she said she needed something that could be found there in order to demonstrate her quirk," Nejire explained, "When we saw him after he got back, Aizawa-sensei looked an even mix of freaked and horrified, also he said that he had expelled Yango on the basis she by no means had any right to be at UA, much less to become a pro hero. He said that Yango's quirk was nothing but pure evil, and that only a villain would even consider using such a power. I failed to get any other details."
Izuku had a grim look on his face; Shouta Aizawa was just reported by Nejire to have engaged in quirkism by blatantly labeling Desumi Yango's quirk as nothing but evil. Hitoshi Shinso respected the man as a mentor because he was one of the few to NOT label Shinso's Brainwashing quirk as evil despite many others in Shinso's life saying his quirk was more suited to villainy. But while Eraserhead had saw heroism in Shinso, he saw nothing but evil and villainy in Yango. Shinso's Brainwashing may have gotten a pass from the rogue underground pro hero, but Yango's quirk, whatever it was, got her an automatic villain label.
Izuku looked back to the paused video showing Desumi raising the dead Yo, and had a pretty good idea what Desumi's quirk is.
To the first police officer, Izuku asked, "Is the perimeter secure enough to ensure no zombies can get out?"
"We can't do squat to stop Ryukyu as she can just fly out," the first officer replied, "But the other zombies inside are all trapped."
"As are any and all civilians stuck inside," Ochaco said, sounding annoyed.
"Look Uravity," the first officer said, sounding a little annoyed, "We are dealing with zombies here. We're doing what we can to minimize loss of life, but as this is something that none of us by any means could have expected or anticipated, there's going to be some stumbling. So get off your high horse and don't go busting my chops because some living civilians are trapped within Zombie Country, alright?"
Folding his arms over his chest, Izuku said, "You're being awfully callous about how innocent civilians are in danger of potentially being killed by and then made to join the living dead."
Gesturing to Izuku, the first officer said, "You just said it yourself, Green Bean! The living dead! We're fucking dealing with the fucking living dead here! This is way too damn fucking much for even experience pro heroes like Saiko over there! What hope do regular police like myself have, huh?!"
"Alright, alright, calm down," Izuku said, trying to get the first officer to settle down. Dragging a hand down over his face, Izuku said, "Yango was a UA student in the same year and class as Nejire-senpai and Tamaki-senpai. Maybe Nezu has some info on Yango in an old file. We can get more info on Yango there, including her quirk hopefully." To Ochaco and Nejire, Izuku said, "I'm heading to UA, Nezu should be there even though the school's still on summer break."
Gently shaking her head, Ochaco said, "I bet Fuyuki wasn't expecting his first summer break while attending UA to involve a zombie apocalypse threatening to happen."
Izuku gave his wife an agreeing nod before he leapt back up into the air and, using some of his quirks in tandem again, took off flying in the direction of UA, hoping that Nezu would have some answers that would help the heroes and the Regime figure out what exactly is going on here with the zombies and Yango.
Izuku arrived at his old Alma Mater, went through the gate and security, then made his way straight to Nezu's office. When he got to the outside of Nezu's office, Izuku heard to his piqued curiosity some angry shouting coming from his old friend Nirengeki and Nirengeki's wife Setsuna. Izuku, curious, made his way into the office as he called out, "I hope I'm not interrupting anything, but I need to see Nezu on a critically urgent matter."
Entering the office, Izuku saw Nezu sitting at his desk in his wheelchair, with Nirengeki standing there with an angry looking Setsuna and a worried looking Anya. "Whatever the fuck it is can wait, Green Bean," Setsuna snarled, "Because the old mousy bastard sitting smug right there is threatening to have me and Nirengeki's daughter expelled from UA!"
"Ayna's at risk of being expelled?" Izuku asked, sounding shocked and surprised, "What happened?"
"Nezu has had the gall to accuse Anya of cheating on the written portion of her finals," Nirengeki explained, "And he's using that as his reason citing that it constitutes as a violation of academic integrity."
Looking to Nezu, Izuku said, "Sir, with all due respect, what basis do you have to suspect that Anya here had cheated?"
Gesturing to Anya, Nezu explained to Izuku in a calm and casual tone, "Miss Shoda here suspected of having used her Mind Reading quirk to cheat on the written portion of her midterms."
"And what makes you think that she used her quirk to cheat on her tests?" Izuku asked.
"She wasn't wearing any quirk suppressing gear to ensure she couldn't use her quirk to cheat," Nezu replied in the same tone he's been using.
"Are you kidding me?!" Setsuna exclaimed angrily, "You're saying my daughter has to wear quirk suppressing gear while taking tests?!"
Turning to look at Setsuna, Nezu said, "Your daughter's quirk let her read the minds of others. She could very easily get all the answers she needs that way. I know full well that the temptation would be too great for her."
Setsuna looked like she was clearly set to blow a gasket, so Izuku stepped in and got everyone to settle down. "Look, can we discuss this later?" Izuku asked, "I just got some details on the case of zombies appearing, and I need to ask Nezu for some details on it."
Nezu had a look of curiosity on his face as he addressed Izuku. "You think that I may be able to shed some light here, Midoriya? How so?"
"I was hoping that you may have some info on record of a female student from the same year as Nejire-senpai and Tamaki-senpai," Izuku began, "A girl expelled on the first day of what would have been her first year as a UA student. Desumi Yango."
A slight flash of alarm appeared in Nezu's eyes, but no one in the room picked up on it. "Yango? Oh dear, I think I do remember her, she was expelled by Aizawa as he was her homeroom teacher at the time and he still had that authority that I mistakenly granted him. But I'm afraid that I don't have a file or any info on her period, so I urge you to search elsewhere and let me get on with business here."
"You don't have any files or other info on Yango?" Izuku asked, a bit surprised.
"She was from over twenty years ago," Nezu said as he gently shook his head, "I don't keep files dating that far back. As a matter of fact, I don't have files on anyone from your year either, I only keep files up to half a decade old now so as to save space for-"
"Principal Nezu's lying."
Nezu was cut off, and he and everyone else in the room turned to look at Anya. "He's lying," Anya went on, "He does indeed have a file on that Yango girl, but he is at Present Mic's request planning to withhold it and hand it over to Present Mic the first opportunity he gets so that the heroes and the Regime can't get it and learn more about Yango's Necromancy quirk."
"Wait, you have the file Midoriya's looking for but you're planning to give it to Yamada-sensei who, need I point out, is a leading member of the Rebellion?" Nirengeki said to Nezu, "You're collaborating with the Rebellion?!"
"This is obviously a little lie that your daughter's telling in a bid to stall for time to try and keep me from expelling her," Nezu said, "I assure you that I by no means have ever collaborated with the Rebel-"
"The file that Green Bean's looking for is hidden in the drawer of your desk immediately in front of you," Anya said, interrupting Nezu in the process. Before Nezu could say anything, Setsuna marched around the desk, pulled Nezu's wheelchair away, and opened the drawer.
There was a surprised look on Setsuna's face when she saw and pulled out an old vanilla folder that had a label on the tab that said 'Yango, Desumi'. Handing the file over to Izuku despite Nezu's objections, Setsuna said, "Here you go, Green Bean."
Izuku shot Nezu a suspicious look before opening the file. The file did indeed contain general information on Desumi, as well as include a photo of a much younger (and plumper) Desumi. Izuku also saw that the file said that Desumi's quirk is called Necromancy, which was briefly summed up as saying it lets Desumi reanimate the bodies of dead beings as mindless zombies that obey Desumi's word. That's all from just skimming, Izuku was certain that there would be more gleamed by going through the old file on Desumi very thoroughly.
Izuku planned to get this info to the other heroes he was working with on the matter concerning the zombies, but there was something else, something that literally had just popped up, that needed to be addressed. "... Sir..." Izuku began, looking and sounding suspicious of Nezu, "...Is there anything that you wanna say?"
"Before we report your sorry ass to the Regime because we got evidence indicating that you've collaborated with the Old Rule Rebellion?" Setsuna snarled, "And we can very easily spin it so that you tried expelling my daughter in a bid to cover your tracks."
Nezu, although clearly nervous, was still trying to be defiant. "You three had used to stand against the very villains who ended up taking over Japan and then the world. And now you're just going to give up trying to take everything back and restore things to how they were before the Regime, when everyone was free...?"
"Even back when Dabi and his collective were trying to take over things," Nirengeki began pointing out, "They refrained from harming minors. Dabi even had Felgrand kill all of the villains from the USJ attack confirmed to have killed members of Midoriya's wife's class. They also simply defeated us and took us prisoner when they besieged the fortified dorms during the second war, they never tried killing us."
"Felgrand killed Bakugo."
"Because Kacchan had deliberately pissed him off enough to make it happen so as to give the rest of us time to get refugees to safety," Izuku pointed out, "And now your buddies are desecrating the dead, Kacchan included." Don't get Izuku wrong, he still secretly supports the Rebellion's cause of removing Dabi and his circle from power because, when you get right down to it, they ARE villains. But with how those very villains have been running things ever since they solidified their hold on the world, as well as the lengths the Rebellion has gone to in a bid to remove the Regime from power, Izuku wasn't sure anymore on which side were the villains and which side were the heroes.
Izuku figured that he could consult the visages of the past One For All users in the Vestige Realm later to get their two yen on the matter.
When word got out that Nezu, the principal of UA High School which is the top heroics academy in Japan, had been arrested by the authorities on the authority of the Dabi Regime, many people who heard it, including those from Izuku's year of UA's hero course, were all shocked. The shock from this happening was further intensified when word got out that the quirked animal principal was arrested because Green Bean, Mines, and Lizardy got confirmation that Nezu had been secretly collaborating with the Old Rule Rebellion.
It was a scandal that rocked UA High School, and Japan as a whole, and it couldn't come at a worse time as the Regime is still trying to get a lid on the fact that zombies had shown up. This ties back to Nezu's arrest; he actually had info that would prove vital in figuring things out on the zombie front, but he had all of it gathered in a single file that he was confirmed he was intending to hand over to the Old Rule Rebellion so that the heroes and the Regime wouldn't be able to get a hold of it and use the info to potentially stop what the Old Rule Rebellion was up to right now.
When he submitted the info he got on Desumi Yango to members of Dabi's inner circle, Izuku who was accompanied by Nirengeki and Setsuna informed them that it was thanks to Nirengeki's and Setsuna's daughter Anya that they got the info and discovered Nezu's betrayal. Setsuna also cited that Nezu was trying to expel Anya from UA by citing his beliefs that Anya cheated on her midterms by using her Mind Reading quirk, and cited her own personal belief that Nezu was trying to get rid of Anya on the basis she could rat him out.
Spinner, who had some knowledge on Anya's quirk, had expressed surprise that the daughter of Mines and Lizardy was able to read Nezu's mind on the basis that super-enlightened or not, Nezu was STILL an animal; Spinner thought that Anya's quirk would only let her read the minds of humans. Anya said that her quirk let her read the minds of animals as well, but most animals never gave her anything that didn't relate to base instincts or wants of food. ...But then again, Nezu isn't like most animals, hence why Anya was able to sus out his true intentions and loyalties.
Dabi, when he was told all of this, remembered back when it was recommended to him that Anya could be used to help sus out Rebellion sympathizers and helpers. This instance, where Nezu was revealed and he was confirmed to be withholding information that could potentially help the Regime deal with Yango, made the man who rules the world all the more interested in employing Anya to help sus out as much of the Rebellion as what can be done. At the very least, he first wanted to use Anya to get what all Nezu has done for the Rebellion out of him.
But all of that was going to have to wait due to the fact that there was an entire city block sealed up to prevent anyone from entering or leaving, because there were a bunch of zombies inside that Dabi didn't want getting out. Thanks to the info obtained that Green Bean had obtained from UA, the Dabi Regime now had a working knowledge of both the woman who was raising the zombies, as well as what her quirk was. True to what many had been anticipating, the woman was able to raise all of the zombies because her quirk let her do so.
Desumi Yango, age thirty-seven, expelled from UA High School on the first day of what would have been her first year. She was expelled by Shouta Aizawa, otherwise known as Eraserhead, back when he still worked at UA as a teacher and had the various authorities granted to him by Nezu. Curiously enough, the reason for Yango's expulsion from UA was never listed in her file that Izuku got, but Nejire was able to supply a theory that Aizawa expelled Yango due to seeing her quirk in action and had automatically stereotyped Yango as nothing more than a villain in the making.
Then again, even Eraserhead couldn't be blamed (at least not too much) for such blatant quirkism when the heroes and Regime began reading what all there was on Yango's quirk, Necromancy. As the name suggests, it lets Yango raise the dead, reanimating bodies of the deceased as mindless undead thralls who carry out her every word. It also states that zombies could only be made if Yango raises them from the dead; there was no 'zombie turning' that would turn a living being into a zombie. This meant that if Yango could be stopped, the production of zombies would be stopped at the same time.
According to what Regime scientists got so far from studying the zombies of Bakugo, Tenya, Mineta, Sato, and Koda, zombies who had quirks in life still had those quirks as living dead, but depending on what the quirk is and how it worked, it either won't work the same or won't work period despite the zombie still having it. For example, Bakugo was noted that he can't make explosions, Sato was noted that he can't strengthen himself regardless of how much sugar he consumed, and when Koda tried using his quirk it made animals freak out and immediately try running away from him. Mineta's balls weren't growing back, and Tenya while he was shown to be able to move fast for a zombie had nowhere near as much speed as what he used to have in life.
Video feeds from within 'Zombie Country' showed that zombie Midnight (Izuku and his peers from his year of UA's hero course were heartbroken, horrified, and disgusted to see that Kayama-sensei had been raised as one of the zombies) could still use her quirk, but rather than produce pink mist that made a target pass out, it produced green mist that made the target violently sick, often making them throw up the moment the green mist got to them. Testimony from Saiko confirmed that zombie Ms. Joke's Outburst, rather than make targets become overwhelmed with laughter as it did in life, made targets become overwhelmed with horrified fright as a quirk corrupted by the user's undeath.
Since it was confirmed that the living can't be turned into zombies unless killed first and then raised by Yango, the Regime reasoned that sending in Gigantomachia or Felgrand and having them wipe out the zombies would be a solid tactic, also snipers (which Nagant would join) would keep an eye out for Yango to pick her off before she could raise more undead. Dabi still wanted to get a hold of Felgrand, although he wanted to assign him to the duty of protecting the Asui sisters who were revealed to still be alive this whole time.
...A desire to protect Tsuyu and Satsuki that Dabi would soon get strong reason for to be justified.
END, CHAPTER NINETY-SIX
Author's notes;
This chapter continues the zombie apocalypse arc, beginning with a bunch of pro heroes who aren't UA alumni being attacked and mostly killed by zombies of Ms. Joke, the Wild, Wild Pussycats, Fat Gum, and the three top ten-ers who died rescuing Toya from the Rebellion, around the time Desumi Yango shows up flying while riding on zombie Ryukyu. Only Saiko escapes, having been horrified beyond comprehension by zombie Ms. Joke's quirk that seems to have been corrupted by the undead hero's state of undeath.
Izuku arrives to where a perimeter was set up to try to contain the zombies, and he as well as Ochaco and Nejire get the lowdown on what's going on. They also get some evidence telling them who is raising the zombies, and Nejire is surprised to see that the fat girl she knew back in her early UA days not only is no longer a fatty but is the one behind the raising of the zombies. Izuku decides to rush to UA to look into getting info on Yango, and interrupts Nezu who's in the middle of trying to expel Anya from UA on charges of 'lack of academic integrity'.
Anya ends up revealing that Nezu not only has the info Izuku's looking for despite Nezu lying about not having it, she also in the process outs him as a supporter of the Old Rule Rebellion; this will be covered and gone into detail later, because the heroes and the Regime still need to deal with the zombies. They get some good news that makes dealing with the zombies easier, but dealing with a bunch of undead that have quirks (although undeath may have an impact on a quirk's functionality depending on what the quirk is) will be easier said than done.
There's also how Dabi still needs to get a hold of Felgrand, and it's implied in the end that Tsuyu and Satsuki may be in some trouble in the next chapter, but things will have to wait until then to continue. Until then, take care.
