Leah walked down the hallway when she stopped in front of the door to her bedroom and she opened the door. She flipped the switch as the light came on and her eyes widened when she saw Pope and Caroline in her room.
"What the hell?!" Leah asked, walking in the room.
"No need to be angry. Just want to introduce you to yer new sister," Pope said, looking at Caroline.
"My…new sister?"
Pope nodded when he headed for the doorway then he left the room. Caroline watched Leah's face as Leah tried to read her, but she noticed Caroline had the same hard look at Daryl.
"Where's Daryl?" Caroline asked while her right hand moved to where the handle of her knife should be, but she only felt empty air.
"He's safe. For now," Leah said.
"What about Dog?"
Leah whistled when Dog ran into the room, looked at Caroline then the dog went to stand next to Caroline. Caroline noticed the hurt look on Leah's face as Caroline lightly patted the dog's head and Leah sighed.
"What did you do to Daryl?" Caroline asked and Leah heard the growl in her voice.
"We just talked," Leah said.
"I don't mean now. I mean back when you lived together."
"He told you about me?"
"What did you do!?"
Leah saw the anger in her eyes as she walked toward Caroline then stopped after Dog growled, lowered its ears and bared its teeth.
"Shit. He's never done that before," Leah thought, moving back.
"Sit," Caroline whispered and Dog sat.
"I didn't do anything Daryl didn't want to do," Leah said after a few seconds.
"I don't think he wanted to have sex with you," Caroline said.
"Is that what he told you?"
"He didn't have to. I could tell somethin' was off. Tell me the truth. Did you rape him?"
Leah felt like she had slapped her. Caroline titled her head to one side while she scratched Dog's left ear and Leah's jaw muscles twitched.
"No, I didn't rape him." Leah said. She walked by Caroline as she went to look out the window and Caroline turned to look at her.
"He's gonna be pissed off when he learns you tried to kill me," Caroline said.
"What are you talking about?" Leah asked, turning to look at her.
"That asshole, Carver, tried to poison me after yer leader told him to get me somethin' to eat."
"You're lying."
"No, I ain't."
"Come on," she said as Leah pointed to the doorway and they left the room. Dog walked between them as Leah glanced at Caroline and the hard look on Caroline's face sent red flags into her head. Leah walked faster as they entered the main room and she saw Pope talking to Carver. "Carver!"
"What?" Carver asked, watching them head to him.
"Did you try to kill her?" she asked, looking at Caroline.
"What are you talking about?" Pope asked.
"Did you tell him to get me somethin' to eat?" Caroline asked, pointing to Carver.
"Well, yes, I did."
"When he put the plate in front of me, I ask him to eat first. He took the plate away."
"Why did you do that?" Pope asked. Caroline noticed him chewing at the inside of his lower lip and Pope glared at Carver. "Well?"
"I took the food away because she was acting like an asshole," Carver said in his defense.
"Or you put something in it."
"I didn't."
Pope stared at him for a few seconds then Pope held out his hand to Caroline and she took hold of his hand. She followed him as Pope headed for the kitchen and he opened the working refrigerator. She looked inside when she took out a bottle of water and what looked like cold, cooked venison.
"Plates are over there and the knives and forks are in that drawer there," Pope said and she walked to the cupboard. She placed the venison on the plate as she opened the drawer, removed a fork and two knives, used the knife and fork to cut the meat and he watched her eating. After she finished, he walked closer and he saw the defensive look in her eyes. "Now, if he bothers you again, you have my permission to teach him a lesson."
She watched him walk away then she sipped on the bottle of water and Caroline leaned against the side of the counter. She looked at the knife on the counter when she slid the knife in the holder on her belt and she took another drink of water.
Later that night, Leah walked in the room to find Caroline lying on the sleeping bag with Dog sleeping next to her and Caroline watched her heading for the bed.
"I want to see Daryl," Caroline said.
"No," Leah said.
Caroline turned to face the wall so Leah could get ready for bed and Leah frowned. She had noticed the resemblance between Daryl and Caroline and she wondered if what she was thinking was true.
"You're not just his sister. You're his twin."
Caroline didn't answer her. She looked at the knife resting on the sleeping bag and Leah walked closer. She was startled when Caroline quickly got to her feet and she had the handle of the knife in her left hand. Dog had stood as the dog growled at Leah and its ears were back.
"Where the hell did you get that?"
"Got it from the kitchen. Now, back off," Caroline said.
Leah backed up when she headed for her bed and she got under the bedding. Caroline settled down on the sleeping bag after she placed the knife back in the holder and Dog settled down next to her. Leah rolled onto her right side as she stared at Caroline and Caroline looked at the ceiling.
"He doesn't love me," Leah said and Caroline turned her head to look at her.
"No, he doesn't. But he does care about you. Or he did," Caroline said. She saw the hurt look on her face as Leah sighed and she rolled onto her back.
"It wasn't like I didn't love him. It's just that his family…his people… meant more to him."
"What's wrong with that? Ain't Pope and the others yer family?"
"Yes, they are."
"So, what did you do when you realized we mean more to him than you? Tell him to pick who was more important? You or his family?"
Leah stayed silent as Caroline sat up and her eyes were wide.
"You made him pick?!"
"Yeah, I did. I couldn't take his… His obsession with finding his brother."
Caroline pressed her lips into a tight line when she realized she was talking about was Rick.
"He means a lot to us," Caroline said.
"I understand that, but…"
"No," she said, holding her hands up. "Just no."
"Look…"
"No! You look! Wantin' to find someone who means everythin' to you?! It doesn't matter if it's family or not! You do everythin' you can to find them! To make sure if they are dead or not! To make sure they're safe! If they ain't!? You try and find a way to rescue or avenge them! So, makin' Daryl pick?! Decide who is more important?! He'd pick family and friends every time! You, Lady, ain't family and you are most certainly are not a friend!".
Leah heard the truth in her words as Caroline went onto her right side and Caroline closed her eyes. Dog settled next to her as Leah frowned and she barely moved the bedding back until Dog growled at her.
Sighing, Leah closed her eyes as she frowned and she placed her hands behind her head.
"I had a son," Leah said, softly.
"Daryl told me. His name was "Matthew", right?" Caroline asked.
"Yes."
"He got killed by a Walker."
"Yes,"
"Be honest then. If he had gone missin', would you do everythin' you could to find him?"
"Yes."
The room became quiet as they closed their eyes and Dog made a soft sigh before closing its eyes.
The next morning, Caroline walked in the canteen when she sat down and she placed her head in her hands. She heard a soft sound as she looked up and saw a cup of what looked like coffee sitting in front of her.
"Go on," Mancea said as she looked at him and the priest smiled.
"Thanks," Caroline said, placing her hands around the coffee mug. She took a sip of the coffee when she noticed Mancea was watching her and she placed the coffee mug down. "What did you put in this?"
"Nothing."
"Bullshit."
"I swear…"
"Daryl will kill all you all if you do anythin' to me."
"Are you threatening me?"
"I'm warnin' you. Preacher man or not, don't fuck with me."
Mancea saw the anger in her eyes as he nodded then he walked away. Caroline looked at the coffee mug when a dull feeling like her nose was clogging up caused her to rubbed her nose with her left hand and she frowned. The feeling happened a few times when she realized something was wrong with Daryl and she quickly got up.
"Where is Daryl?!" she demanded and Mancea looked at her with a confused look on his face. "If you wanna keep breathin', tell me where he is!"
"Stand down," Pope said, walking to her and she removed the knife from the holder on her belt. "Put that away."
"Where is my brother!?"
"He's fine. Leah is just having a talk with him."
"Take me to him! Now!"
Pope chewed in the inside of his bottom lip when he nodded and she followed him out of the room. They walked down the hallway when they enter a room and Caroline saw Daryl and he turned to look at her. They locked eyes as they had a silent conversation then she noticed one of Maggie's men tied to a chair.
"Now….," Pope said as he walked to Daryl and Daryl looked at him. "If you and your sister really do want to join us, we need a little help."
"I ain't doin' shit," Daryl said. Caroline went to stand next to him and she noticed the water rolling down his hair.
"This man…," Pope said as he ignored Daryl and looked at the man tied to the chair. "He was a part of the group you were traveling with. We haven't been able to get him to talk. Maybe you can do it."
Daryl looked at Caroline then he frowned, removed the leather vest, handed the leather vest to her then he walked to the man tied to the chair. Caroline couldn't hear what her brother was whispering to him when Daryl removed one of the knives from the holder on his belt and her eyes slightly widened.
A few seconds later, Leah was leading them out of the room and Caroline turned to look at the angry look on Pope's face.
Alexandria
Carol stood at the window as she watched people going by and she frowned. She crossed her arms over her stomach when she heard the sounds of drums, chanting and flutes and she blinked her eyes a few times.
"You had to do it, Earth Mother," came from behind her and she shook her head.
"Did you ever have to do something like that," Carol asked.
"Yeah, I did. If it makes you feel better, those horses know their sacrifice wasn't in vain."
"It doesn't," she whispered then she lowered her head. "Are Daryl and Caroline alright?"
"For now."
"Why won't you tell me where they are? If they're in trouble, we should go after them."
"The people they're travelin' with will handle that. You need to be here."
"Why?"
"You'll see."
The sounds of the drums, flute and chanting stopped as Carol pressed her lips in a tight line and tears rolled down her cheeks.
Meridian – the Reapers' base
Leah led Caroline and Daryl inside the shed as Daryl held onto his sister's left hand and he wondered why they had been brought to the shed.
"What's goin' on?" Daryl asked.
"Pope wants to test you," Leah explained.
"Test us?" Caroline asked.
"He wants to see how loyal you are."
"To who? You?" Daryl asked.
"To all of us."
"No way."
Leah gave him a sad look when she walked to the door then she stopped when Carver closed the door. She tried to get the door open when she realized Carver had locked the door and she pounded her right fist on the door.
"Carver, opened the door!" Leah shouted.
"Sorry. Pope said you're gonna be tested, too," Carver said from behind the door and she backed up when gasoline moved from under the door.
"Shit."
"What's goin' on?" Caroline asked.
"Move!"
The gasoline was lit on fire as Daryl pulled Caroline behind him and Leah looked for a way for them to get out of the shed.
"Shit," she repeated over and over.
"Daryl!" Caroline said, pointing toward the window. Daryl found an axe near the wall to remove the wood over the window while they coughed and he used the axe to break the glass.
"Move!" he shouted. He watched Leah climb out the window when he helped Caroline get out then he followed them. They stood gasping for air as Daryl looked at Pope and the rest of the Reapers and Pope smiled.
"Well done. You have survived your baptism of fire," Pope said and Daryl glared at him. Pope turned as he walked away and Leah growled. Caroline watched the Reaper walk away while Daryl slid his left hand over her right hand and they locked fingers. "Daryl, will you and Caroline please follow me?"
Daryl looked at Caroline as she nodded and they went to follow him. They headed into the barracks while Pope led them down the hallway and into the den. Daryl and Caroline watched Pope as he went to get a bottle of whisky and some glasses and he turned to look at them.
"Sit down," Pope said, nodding his head to the couch.
"No," Daryl said.
"Please."
They went to sit down on the couch as Pope sat on the chair next to the couch and he poured the whisky into the glasses. He handed them the glasses when he took a long drink then he sat back in the chair.
"Do you two know why I had you take that test?" he asked, placing the glass on the coffee table.
"You wanted to kill us?" Caroline asked, rolling the glass between her hands.
"If I wanted to do that, you'd already be dead and hanging upside down from one of the lampposts."
"Why did you do it?" Daryl asked.
"I wanted to see how far you'd go to protect your family. Turns out I was right. Family means more to you than your own life. I mean, you could have saved your own skin. Instead, you let Leah and your sister get out first."
"How'd you know she was my sister?" he asked, looking at Caroline.
"A man has to be blind not to see it. In fact, she's more than a sister. She's your other half. Which means you'll do whatever it takes to make sure she's safe."
They looked at each other as Pope made a tiny grin and Daryl took a drink of whisky.
"What happens now?" Caroline asked.
"What happens is you two are now a part of the family," Pope said.
"What do you want us to do?" Daryl asked.
"I need you to help me defend this place from her."
Daryl knew he was talking about Maggie. He took another sip of whisky as Pope tried to read his face, but Daryl was keeping his face blank.
"What will you do with her?" Caroline asked.
"What I do with most people who piss me off," Pope said.
Daryl caught his sister looking at him as they had a short, silent conversation and Daryl leaned back against the cushion.
"What if we fail to take her down?" Daryl asked.
Pope glared at them as he chewed on the inside of his bottom lip then he sat forward.
"Failure is not an option," Pope said with a serious tone. He waited for them to speak as he sat back and he wondered if he needed to show them what would happen if they did fail him. He removed a pack of cigarettes from his shirt pocket as he offered a cigarette to Daryl and Daryl took a cigarette. Caroline shook her head after he offered her a cigarette and Daryl removed the lighter from his jeans pocket. He lit the cigarettes while Caroline stood and she went to look at some of the books which were piled on the table on the other side of the room.
"Tell me something," Pope said after a few seconds and he leaned forward to look at Daryl. "How far are you willing to go to protect your family?"
"I'd die fer them," Daryl said. Pope heard the truth in his words as he nodded and they went back to smoking the cigarettes.
"What about you, Caroline? How far would you go to protect your family?" Pope asked, looking at Caroline.
"The same as Daryl," she said, looking through the book.
Pope looked from Daryl to Caroline as he chewed the inside of his lower lip then he slapped his hands on his knees, stood, dropped the cigarette onto the floor then ground the cigarette out with his left foot.
"Well, I think we need to get back to the others," Pope said and Daryl stood while Caroline walked to them. They headed out of the room when they left the building and Pope led them to where a campfire had been lit. Daryl and Caroline stood near Leah as Pope turned and looked at them. He scanned the Reapers, Daryl and Caroline with his eyes when he sighed and lowered his head. "I cannot express how disappointed I am in all of you."
"What are you talking about?" Austin asked.
"I am talking about your lost brothers! They were family and you failed to save them!"
Caroline moved a little closer to Daryl while Pope ranted on about what happened and Daryl glanced at her. They were stunned when Pope tossed one of the Reapers into the fire then he pointed at the Walker tied to a pole and Daryl recognized it as the member of Maggie's group he had to torture in order for Pope to believe he wanted to join them.
"Shit," Daryl whispered and Caroline nodded. They watched Pope walking off when the rest of the Reapers walked away, but Carver and Leah stayed behind.
"Move," Carver said as Daryl looked at the building where he was being held.
"He's going with us," Leah said and Carver frowned.
"The hell he is!"
"Pope's orders."
Carver glared at her as Leah pointed for them to move and Caroline and Daryl followed her. They returned to the barracks as she led them to her room and she opened the door. Dog made a happy bark after seeing Daryl and Daryl walked to the dog.
"Ok. What the hell is goin' on?" Daryl asked as he patted the dog's head and Dog sat next to him.
"Why did you bring him here?" Caroline asked.
"Just making sure he's safe," Leah said as she walked to the corner of the room then she tossed a sleeping bag to Daryl. "Do you really think after all this that those guys won't try to get rid of either one of you?"
"How do we know you won't do anythin'?" Daryl asked.
"You don't."
Caroline didn't like her icy tone as her right hand moved toward the handle of the knife she had in her belt, but she stopped her hand when Daryl barely nudged her.
"Look….," Leah said as she walked toward Daryl and Dog growled at her.
"Stop," Daryl grumbled and Dog went to stand between him and Leah before the dog sat on the floor.
"I was going to ask if you were talking to him or me."
"What do you want me to tell you?"
Leah locked eyes with him as she noticed something in the blue depth of his eyes and she frowned.
"Did you ever love me?" Leah asked.
Daryl knew he would hurt her if he told her the truth and he sighed, lowering his eyelids.
"No. But I did care about you," Daryl said.
"And now?"
Caroline felt the feeling of uncertainty coming from her twin as she lightly nudged Daryl and he looked at her. Leah was getting spooked by their silent conversations and Daryl sighed.
"You don't have to answer that," Leah said, crossing her arms under her breasts. She watched Daryl walk to Caroline's sleeping bag as he unrolled the sleeping bag Leah had given him and he placed the sleeping bag on the floor. He went to settle down on the sleeping bag while Dog walked closer and the dog snuggled down next to him. Caroline walked to the other sleeping bag as she sat on the sleeping bag and Daryl looked up at her.
"G'night," Daryl said as he closed his eyes and he placed his hands on his stomach.
"Night," Caroline said, going onto her right side and she reached over to place her left hand on his left shoulder.
Leah watched them drift off to sleep as she walked to the window and looked out into the darkness. She wasn't sure, but she swore she saw a large shadow moving by the buildings and she frowned, tilting her head to one side. The large shadow vanished as she arched her eyebrows down then she turned to see the large shadow on the wall behind her.
"Fuck," she whispered. The large shadow didn't move, but she felt a strong power coming from the large shadow and Dog lifted its head, growling at the large shadow.
Leah felt her heart slamming in her chest as the large shadow moved down the wall, across the floor then stopped near Dog and the sleeping bags. Dog seem to calm down as the dog lowered its head and Leah watched the large shadow turning toward her.
"Stay back," Leah whispered, reaching down for the gun in the holster on her right hip. Her heart jumped hard in her chest when red glowing eyes appeared and they seem to lock eyes with her. A low growl came from the large shadow when the large shadow vanished and she lowered her hand. She cautiously walked to the sleeping bags when she looked down at Caroline and Daryl and she flexed her fingers. "What the hell is going on?"
