"Walkers!" alerted Daryl and Caroline as they looked at each other and they ran toward the main building. After they had arrived on the roof, they stood next to Pope and Leah when they saw the Walkers heading toward them and Pope growled.
"She's here," Pope whispered.
Daryl knew he meant Maggie as he looked at the Walkers when he noticed some of the Walkers looked and moved like Whisperers. When he caught the eye of a female Walker, his blood ran cold and Caroline felt fear coming from him.
"Maggie," Daryl thought then he noticed two of the male Walkers. Even though the Walker was moving slowly, Daryl recognized Negan's swagger and Daryl barely nodded his head. Caroline noticed who he was looking at as she barely nodded back and they watched Pope turn, looking at the Reapers.
"Get ready!" Pope shouted.
They watched Pope and Leah head for the large object with a cover over the top when Daryl lightly pulled on Caroline's right upper arm and she looked at him.
"I need you to go find Dog and get the hell outta here," Daryl whispered.
"What about you?" Caroline whispered.
"I'll be ok. Go!"
Nodding, Caroline headed for the door and Daryl watched her slip inside then close the door behind her. He then turned to look at Pope and Leah and he swallowed the lump in his throat.
The next morning, Daryl moved silently through the hallway while his mind replayed his confrontation with Leah on the roof and how she framed him for Pope's death.
Whatever feelings he had for her, for maybe starting over with her, died quickly and all he wanted to do was find Caroline and Dog. He also wanted to return to Carol.
He encountered Auston in a classroom as thoughts of Judith, RJ, Gracie and the rest of the kids going to school sailed through his head. He was lucky to escape before Carver and Leah had broken into the room and find Auston's body and Daryl headed down the hallway.
He went around the corner when he heard a soft growl and he stopped short when he saw Caroline in the hallway with her crossbow pointed at him.
"It's me," he grumbled and she lowered the crossbow. "Where'd you find that?"
"In the armory," Caroline said. She showed him she had retrieved his crossbow as he nodded and they headed down the hallway.
"Ding ding!" caused them to look at each other as they went around the corner and they saw Maggie, Elijah and Negan standing over Carver. Negan held a school bell in his right hand and he gave Caroline a small smile.
"Well, there you are!" Negan said.
"Stand down," Daryl said, holding up his right hand.
"Stand down!? They tried to kill us!" Maggie said.
"We need him."
"No! He's the one who killed my sister!" Elijah said, glaring at Carver.
"And Leah will kill us if we go out there without him," Caroline explained.
"She has every right to kill Daryl! He killed Pope!" Carver said.
"That ain't true. Leah killed him and blamed me," Daryl said.
"Bullshit!"
"Let's get him up," Negan said, walking to Carver and he reached down for him. "Try anything and I'll ring your bells again."
Caroline tried hard not to laugh as Negan pulled Carver up to his feet and Daryl tied a gag around Carver's mouth. Daryl then tied Carver's hands behind his back as they headed down the hallway and Caroline helped Maggie with Elijah.
Outside, the door opened as they walked out of the building then stopped when they saw Leah and the remaining Reapers. Daryl noticed the look Leah had on her face when she saw they had captured Carver and Daryl held his knife to Carver's throat.
"Stop right there!" Leah said.
"Let's us go," Daryl said.
"No. Now, release Carver."
"It doesn't have to go down like this. Just let us take some food and we'll go," Caroline said.
"No."
Daryl saw the look in Leah's eyes as he fought to keep hold of Carver and they walked closer. Suddenly, Elijah's leg gave out as he collapsed to the ground and Maggie ran to kneel down next to him. Watching them, Leah shook her head before she pushed the button on the collar of her coat and she looked up at the roof of the building behind them.
"Shoot the sister," Leah said, looking at Caroline. They had been told about Caroline being Daryl's sister and she saw the anger in Caroline's eyes after their eyes locked. When nothing happened, Leah frowned and she pushed the button again. "Jenson! I said shoot her! Jenson?!"
"Sorry, there isn't a Jenson anymore," a voice said over the speaker and they turned to look up at the roof of the building behind them. Caroline moved back enough to see Gabriel on the roof and she squinted her eyes while she frowned..
"Son of a bitch," Caroline whispered.
"Who are you?!" Leah asked after she pushed the button.
"I am your death. But you can call me "Gabriel"," Gabriel said then he fired the rifle. The bullet slammed into Carver's back as Daryl let go of him and Carver fell to the ground. Caroline started to move when Negan lightly took hold of her left upper arm and she looked at him. Shaking his head, Negan and Caroline watched Maggie crawl toward Carver when she removed the knife on her belt and she slammed the knife into the side of Carver's head. She stood up then remove the gun from the back of her jeans and she pointed the gun at Leah.
"Maggie!" Daryl shouted. Maggie started firing the gun as the Reapers fell dead on the ground and Leah ran. Maggie fired the gun as the bullet hit Leah's right shoulder and Leah ran faster. Maggie followed her when Daryl stopped her and told her to go back to the others. Maggie slowly walked back to them while Caroline stood near Negan and he had a worried look on his face. Maggie walked to Elijah as she helped him to his feet and Caroline went to help her to find somewhere for him to sit down.
Daryl didn't know if he had gone the right way as he looked for any sign of Leah and he sighed.
"I know you're here!" he called out, but he didn't hear anything, but the wind. "It's just me! Come on out!"
Leah could just see him from her hiding place and Daryl pressed his lips in a thin line.
"Look, Caroline was right. It didn't have to go down like that. We could have made a deal. If you had trusted me… If you would have just listened…"
She could just see the sadness on his face as he sighed and he shook his head.
"Instead… Instead, you're alone and… You could have had a second chance. We could have."
"He wants to get back together?" Leah thought.
"But that ain't gonna happen. Not now. Go. Just go before I change my mind."
She watched him walking away as the tears rolled down her face then she slowly walked away.
Daryl walked back to the others when he noticed Maggie and Negan were missing and he walked to Caroline.
"Where's Maggie and Negan?" Daryl asked.
"Maggie said she had to check on something. Negan went with her," Gabriel said.
"And you just let them go?"
"I don't think they'll do anything to each other."
Daryl glared at him when he felt Caroline pull on the fingers of his left hand and he looked at her. They locked eyes when they walked off and Dog walked beside Daryl. They walked a safe distance when Caroline crossed her arms under her breasts and he waited for her to say something.
"You let her go, didn't you?" Caroline asked, titling her heard to one side.
"Yeah."
"Why?"
"Dunno."
"Yeah, you do. You still have feelin's fer her."
"Maybe."
"Why do I have a feelin' we're gonna regret this?"
"Maybe."
Sighing, Caroline shook her head and he frowned. She felt guilt coming from him and she lightly shoved him.
"Knock it off. I ain't angry. Just tryin' to figure out what to do about Maggie," she said as she looked toward where Maggie and Negan had gone.
"We're just gonna have to trust her," Daryl said and she nodded.
"Wanna go check out the storage houses?"
"Yeah."
She fell in line next to him as they walked off and she slid her left arm around him then she lightly patted Daryl's back.
In the woods, Leah walked by the trees. The pain in her shoulder cause little shocks to move through her as she sighed and she walked faster. She came to a stop when a tall man appeared from behind the trees and the sudden sound of drums, chanting and flutes filled the air. She noticed he was dressed in work boots, tattered jeans, a black leather belt and a red checkered shirt.
"Well, looks like you really fucked things up, hunh?" Jeb said, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Who are you?!" Leah demanded, removing the gun from her holster and she pointed the gun at him.
"Depends. Are you gonna finally fuck off or are you gonna keep botherin' Daryl?"
"You know him?"
"He's family."
"Shit. Just how big is his family?"
"Bigger than yours now that you got them all killed."
Leah glared at him as the drums, flute and chanting grew louder and Jeb frowned.
"Now, are you gonna leave him and his sister alone?" Jeb asked.
Leah just stared at him when his eyes started glowing in a red light and she held tighter onto the gun.
"Fine. Just know this. Mess with either of 'em and you'll end up like that," he said and she glanced to her right to see a Walker heading for her. She quickly turned, fired the gun and the back of the Walker's head exploded. She watched the Walker drop to the ground when she turned back to face Jeb, but he was gone. The drums, flute and chanting had stopped. She placed the gun away when she started walking, but she failed to see the large, black bear watching her. The large, black bear growled when it started following her and the red eyes shimmered in the sunlight.
Later that night, the campfire light cast a dim light as they sat near the fire and Caroline lightly scratched Dog's right ear. They had been able to find food, water and supplies in the buildings and they had loaded mostly everything into the wagons.
"Caroline," made her look over at Gabriel as she waited for him to say something and Gabriel cleared his throat.
"Thanks," Caroline said, looking at the fire.
"Before you thank me, I need to say something," Gabriel said.
"Like what? Like you were really aimin' at me and missed?"
"No," he said with a sigh and he shook his head. "Look, I know you and I got off on the wrong foot…"
"More like the whole damn body."
"Caroline…"
"Look…," she said as she turned to face him and Daryl watched her flexing her fingers. He could feel the anger and frustration coming from her, but he knew she needed to talk with Gabriel. "I get it. When I showed up, all of you were dealin' with Alpha. You had no idea when or if she would attack next and here comes this stranger claimin' to be Daryl's sister. She had this proof that anyone could have made up, but how? Just how would they be able to find the right documents, get them signed and officially sealed and get hold of a shitload of cancelled checks with the same name and signatures on them as well as the same check and bank account numbers? Where would they get hold of the photos of Daryl as a baby, a child, a teenager and a young man?"
Gabriel stayed silent and Caroline looked down at her right hand. She moved her fingers over the glove as she glared at him, removed the glove then she held up her right hand.
"Yes, this could have happened in a number of ways. Alpha could have done it. Beta could have. Though I think he would have torn my hand right off."
"Caroline…," Gabriel said with a sigh.
"But you had made up your mind. You didn't want to trust me or give me the benefit of the doubt. Not even when there was a blood test which proved that I was his sister. Instead, you wanted to turn me over to Alpha, turn people against me… Well, you thought about it. I thought maybe you finally accepted me… Thought I could count on you… But that was a lie! You let me go off after a Walker when we were at the Tower. What were you expecting to happen? That the Walker killed me and eat the evidence? That I would get bit or scratched and you would finally have an excuse to kill me?"
"Will you let me speak my peace now?" he asked and Caroline saw the sadness on Gabriel's face. She nodded her head and he moved a little closer. He collected his thoughts and he placed his hands on his lap. "It is true that I didn't trust you when we first met. That I thought you were working for Alpha. But, as time went on, I started noticing things. Noticed you were fighting so hard to fit in. Yes, Dante did the same when he arrived, but, as you know, he was the one we should have cast out. After the Kingdom fell, I thought you finally realized I no longer felt any ill will against you. I mean, you did toss that snowball at me with a big smile on your face."
Caroline smiled and he made a soft laugh.
"And, yes, I told you I would give you my rage if someone make you feel useless or wanted to make you leave. I meant every word. As for the Tower… Do you want me to tell you why I let you go off on your own?" he asked and she nodded her head. "The reason I let you go off on your own was because I knew you could handle it. The reason why I didn't look for you afterwards was because I had just been rescued by Maggie and Elijah and I had thought you had gotten out with the others. If I had known you were still in there, I would have gone to look for you."
Like Daryl, Caroline was good at telling when someone was bullshitting her and she moved closer, holding out the glove then her right hand. Smiling, Gabriel placed the glove on her right hand and they wrapped their fingers together.
"I wish I had some snowballs so you could toss 'em in my face," she teased and he laughed. He hugged her as they placed their heads together and Daryl gave her a pleased look. Suddenly, Dog softly growled when Daryl saw the Walker moving toward Gabriel and Caroline then the Walker stopped, stiffened its body then fell to the ground. Maggie walked into the camp as she looked at them and Daryl and Dog walked to her.
"Where've you been?" Daryl asked.
"I had to check on Alden," Maggie said.
"What happened to Alden?" Caroline asked, getting to her feet and she walked to Daryl. Maggie explained while Caroline looked down at her feet and Daryl placed his right arm around her waist.
"Let me guess. He died and was turned," Daryl said.
"Looks more like he was attacked by one of the Reapers before he died. His throat was slit. My guess is they fought then both of them died. I killed the Reaper Walker then…," Maggie said and Daryl walked to her. She had tears in her eyes as she sighed and Daryl held her. He let her cry as Caroline and Dog walked to Gabriel and she went to sit next to him. A few seconds later, Maggie moved back as she wiped her eyes on the back of her left hand and Daryl gave her a sad look.
"Where's Negan? He did go with you, right?" Daryl asked.
"He's gone," Maggie said.
"Gone?" Caroline asked.
"Yeah. He found me burying Alden's body and we talked. That's when he told me he was leaving and he walked off."
Daryl and Caroline glanced at each other while Maggie went to check on Elijah and Caroline shrugged her shoulders.
"Go get some sleep," Daryl grumbled and Caroline nodded, heading for the sleeping bags.
The next morning, they finished loading the supplies, food and water in the carts when Maggie and Gabriel got onto the driver's seats and they took the reins in their hands. Daryl and Caroline took the lead as they left Meridian and Dog walked beside Daryl.
Alexandria
Carol stood in the gateway as she tried to see any sign of Daryl, Caroline and the others when she saw something moving closer and her heart felt lighter when she saw Daryl and Dog. Caroline was behind them as they headed for the gate and Carol went to tell the others.
Daryl thought he had seen Carol as he frowned and Caroline walked beside him. He glanced at her as Caroline lightly nudged him and he titled his head slightly to one side.
"You gonna tell her about Leah?" Caroline asked.
"No," Daryl said. She understood why as she nodded and they walked by the gates. They noticed the wreckage as they stopped walking and Dog sat next to Daryl.
"What the hell happened?" Caroline asked.
"Dunno."
"Uncle Daryl! Aunt Caroline!" make them turn to the left and Judith and RJ ran to Daryl. He knelt down to picked them up for a hug and Caroline softly laughed at the small grunt he made as he lifted the kids off the ground.
"What about me?" she asked after Daryl lowered the kids to their feet and RJ and Judith ran to her. They hugged while Carol and Lydia walked closer and Daryl hugged Lydia. He quickly went to hug Carol and she saw the joy in his eyes. She also saw some sadness and he moved back.
"Find anything?" Carol asked.
"Yeah," he said, looking at the carts. "What happened here?"
Carol explained as they walked to the carts and they started unloading the carts. Daryl picked up a large container of apples while the kids gathered around him and Caroline placed the other container of apples on the ground. She stood up when she saw Connie and Kelly walking closer and Caroline smiled.
"No way!" she whispered and Connie and Kelly waved at her. She waved back then tapped Daryl's back and he looked at her. She motioned for him to turn around as she took the large container out of his hands and he turned around.
"No way!" he whispered, half-ran to Connie and she smiled when he hugged her. Caroline saw the sad look on Carol's face as Carol watched Daryl and Connie hugging and talking then she looked at Caroline.
"Where did you find her?" Caroline asked. Sighing, Carol explained and Caroline nodded from time to time.
"He's really happy to see her," Carol said, softly.
"So am I. But it doesn't change anythin'."
"Yeah," she said with a nod then Carol walked away.
"Shit," Caroline whispered then she walked to Connie. Connie grinned as they hugged then they moved back.
I AM SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU, Caroline signed.
HAPPY TO SEE YOU, TOO, Connie signed
CAROL TOLD ME WHAT HAPPENED. ARE YOU OK?
YES.
Caroline smiled when she saw Daryl talking with Lydia and Connie tapped her right shoulder. She turned to look at Connie and Connie frowned.
IS EVERYTHING OK WITH DARYL?
OTHER THAN HIM BLAMIN' HIMSELF FOR NOT FINDIN' YOU AFTER THE CAVE IN, HE'S FINE.
HE HAS NOTHING TO FEEL GUITY ABOUT.
HE KNOWS THAT, BUT IT DOESN'T STOP HIM FROM FEELIN' LIKE SHIT.
Connie rolled her eyes as she smiled then she and Kelly walked off and Caroline looked at Daryl.
"Hey! We have company!" made her and Daryl look up at Jerry standing on the walkway as they ran to the ladder and Daryl called for the others to get ready. Carol and Maggie had joined them as they went up the ladder and went to stand next to Jerry. They aimed their weapons as trucks and people wearing red and white body armor, boots and helmets on horseback headed down the road to the front gate then they came to a stop.
"Wait for it! Daryl shouted and they pointed their weapons.
"Wait! Wait!" Eugene said as he appeared with his hands up and he smiled at them. "There is no need for violence! We're here to help!"
A short time later, Carol and Caroline stood next to Daryl while Dog sat between Carol and Daryl and they looked at Eugene. Eugene was explaining why there were there as Caroline glanced at her twin and she could feel the anger, frustration and concern coming from him.
"Now, I would like to introduce someone who wishes to speak with you," Eugene said, looking to his right. "Mister Lance Hornsby."
They watched Lance walk closer as Daryl frowned and Caroline folded her arms under her breasts.
"Hello," Lance said then he looked around. "Looks like you're having a hard time, aren't you?"
Something about Lance set off red flags as Daryl listened to him explain about the Commonwealth had to offer them and Daryl glanced at the back of Judith and RJ's heads. The thought of them going to school, having a safe place to live and enough food to eat sounded good, but memories of the Governor and what happened at Woodbury gave good arguments for them not going.
"Now, if you're interested in joining us, shall we get going?"
"Hold on. We'll have to talk it over first," Maggie said.
"Alright. Take all the time you need."
Something about the way Lance smiled caused a cold shiver to move through Caroline when she felt Daryl's right hand lightly squeezing her left shoulder and she pressed her lips into a thin line.
A short time later, Carol, Daryl and Caroline helped Judith, RJ and Dog into one of the trucks as they got into the truck and one of the people in the red and white body armor, boots and helmet closed the door. Daryl turned in the seat as he watched the truck move down the road and Alexandria grew smaller in the distance.
