Chapter 7: Leaving Paris

June, 2010

It wasn't very often people get to see an emotional Gilbert Grissom, unless he felt comfortable around those who he knew wouldn't judge him, mostly Sara of course, but considering this was the last day he'll be in this classroom, teaching these students, he let a few emotions out as he addressed them.

"I want to thank you all for an enjoyable school year, which some of you I taught the whole year." The few underclassmen that he had taught the whole school year clapped and cheered, causing Grissom to smile with a nod before he continued. "And while I taught at conferences, seminars and a mentor at CSI labs, you made my first real teaching job everything I could have imagined, I hope if I get another teaching opportunity it will be as wonderful as this was. I will not forget a moment I spent with you all. I also hope that you all continue to learn and do great things in your lives, I see a lot of potential in this room, and I would hate for it to all go to waste." He paused for a second before he cleared his throat and continued. "I'll miss you all and good luck in the future." He then looked at his watch before looking at his students, who he noticed some was teary-eyed, and finished with. "And for the last time, class dismissed."

Usually when that last phrase was said, those who didn't stick around asking questions were already up and out of the door, but everybody stayed seated today, and he raised an eyebrow. "What's going on?"

It was Hailey who spoke with a smile while she stood up, carrying a gift bag. "Now it's not very rare and you probably already have it, but we all wanted to chip in and get you something."

As Grissom took the gift bag from Hailey, he spoke again while clearing his throat, clearly touched. "You guys didn't have to do this." He then took a breath as he opened the bag and pulled out a butterfly case, which Hailey was right it wasn't rare at all, yet surprisingly it was one he didn't have, so he looked around the room before looking at Hailey and replying with a smile. "Thank you, I will cherish this."

Hailey nodded with a smile as another student of his stood up from his seat, walked up to him and held out his hand before thanking him, and after Grissom shook the young man's hand, he walked out the room while the rest of the class followed his lead until everyone was out but Hailey.

They look at one another before Hailey spoke with emotion. "I honestly can't tell you how much I enjoyed your teaching/mentoring. This has probably been my favorite six months of school that I ever had and believe me that's saying a lot because I quite enjoyed school very much growing up."

Grissom smirked. "I believe that." She chuckled before he continued after clearing his throat. "Don't tell any of my classes but you were my best student, and it was a pleasure to teach you Ms. Tucker."

"Thank you, Professor Grissom. I was hoping we could set up a day before you leave to meet at the park so my daughter could say goodbye to Hank. I would hate for her to not see him at least one more time."

"Of course, we can do that. He would enjoy that."

Since everybody else got a handshake but Hailey, Grissom held out his hand towards her, which Hailey smiled while shaking his hand, then after they release them, she walks to her desk, grabs her bag and leaves the room, leaving Grissom alone to reflect on the year he had here, and while it was short lived and he didn't regret the decision of not renewing his contract, he enjoyed it very much.

He took a breath as he placed the butterfly case back in its bag, placed the bag on his desk, grabbed his briefcase, checked the drawers in the desk to make sure he hadn't forgotten anything before picking up the gift bag and briefcase and heading out the room for the last time.

When he made it out into the parking lot, he sees Sara out there waiting by the driver's side of his vehicle.

They smile at one another as he walked closer to her, then when he stopped in front of her, she asked while cupping his cheek. "How are you doing babe?"

She knew he didn't regret his decision on leaving either, but she also knew how much he enjoyed it, so it had to be affecting him a little.

He took a breath before speaking. "I'm not bad, I enjoyed my time here, and yeah, maybe I'm a little sad, but what I'm more excited about is what will happen next for us." When she nodded with a sigh and small frown, he sets his bags down and cupped her cheek. "Honey, I thought leaving Vegas is what you wanted to do?"

She nodded again. "It is, but I just kind of feel bad because you were leaving this great job, you even turned down a new job to come to Vegas but now with me leaving the lab..."

He cuts her off with a reassuring tone. "When we first had this discussion, you couldn't have foreseen the lab getting another member to the team so soon after Travis was taken from days." He then chuckled and shook his head. "I just still can't believe it's Morgan."

Sara chuckled. "And that she's Ecklie's daughter."

As they looked at one another, their visit a few weeks ago and another life altering decision came to mind.

Flashback

A few weeks earlier

Late May, 2010

They kiss in greeting at the airport, then after pulling back they said their loves yous before Grissom picked up Sara's carryon bag and they headed to the exit so they could get to his vehicle, and as he was driving to their Paris apartment, he couldn't help but notice she had been quieter than usual, so he asked after clearing his throat. "Honey, is everything ok?"

"Yeah, but can we uh, can we talk about this when we get to the apartment?"

"Sure."

The rest of the ride home was done in silence, but Grissom couldn't help but feel a little tension during it.

Once they arrived home, Sara greeted Hank while Grissom took Sara's bag into the bedroom, then after getting them each a bottle of water, they settle on the couch before she spoke after taking a drink. "You won't believe this, but somehow Catherine had managed to convince Morgan to come to Vegas."

Last month there was a joined case with the CSI team in LA, and it just so happened that Morgan Brody, Ecklie's daughter, which Sara had no idea he even had a daughter, was on the team, so she and Catherine got to work with her to solve the case.

Grissom was confused on his wife's demeanor since this was what they had been waiting for, for the team to be at full strength so she could leave, so he thought she would be happier about that. "Ok, but this is a good thing, right? I mean we've been waiting for the team to have their members so you can leave." There was a slight pause before he asked. "Unless of course you changed your mind, is that what this is about?"

Sara shook her head. "Honestly, no. Vegas just doesn't feel right to me anymore. I was there to serve a purpose, and that was to help get them at full strength and to have a better ending of leaving the lab. Don't get me wrong, I love my work as a CSI, and if the opportunity ever pops up again, I'll be glad to do it, but not in Vegas."

He nodded in understanding before asking. "Ok, then what is it?"

She now started to have tears in her eyes. "You choose not to do that government job and declined your contract here to come to Vegas and now I'm thinking about not wanting to be there anymore, it just doesn't sit well with me. I feel like I cheated you out on something."

He shook his head with a smile as he ran his thumb up and down her cheek to wipe tears away. "No honey, I declined both jobs to be with you, that was the whole point." She was going to open her mouth and speak again, but he continued before she could. "All this means is that we are not tied down to a city anymore, we can start fresh somewhere else, we can go anywhere we want. There are plenty of teaching jobs out there and I'm sure when you want you can be a CSI again, or at least something along those lines."

She then spoke softly. "Yeah, but you love Paris."

"Yeah, I do, it will always have a special place in my heart, but honestly I miss the states." He then gets a little shy as he replied softly. "I miss my mom."

Sara smiled as she cupped his cheek. "You don't need to be embarrassed about admitting that. I know how much you love her."

He nodded with a smile. "I don't know maybe we can visit her for a bit while we decide what's next for us?"

She nodded with a smile in return while running her thumb up and down his cheek. "Of course, we can do that."

When she sighed while removing her hand from his cheek, he asked once again in concern. "You still don't seem ok with something."

She shook her head while taking his hand. "I feel like we've been on a rollercoaster these last few years, and I just want to stay in one spot and have a life with you." She then took his hand and placed it on her stomach. "Build a family with you."

The more she thought about having kids with him, the more she wanted it.

He nodded with a smile as he ran his thumb up and down her stomach. "And we'll get there, we'll have everything you ever wanted."

She started to have tears in her eyes as she asked softly. "You sound so sure."

They both knew she was talking more about building the family part than anything else, and he nodded with love in his eyes. "I'm very sure about that because I know my wife. When she wants something, she won't stop until she gets it."

She cups his cheek again while replying with a smile. "Like with you."

He takes her hand from his cheek and kissed it before replying. "Exactly, so don't lose faith yet."

She shook her head. "I'm not." She then sighed with another soft smile. "I'm sorry, this is supposed to be a happy visit, and I'm turning this into..."

He cuts her off while squeezing her hand softly. "You're talking about how you feel, and there is nothing wrong with that, that's what we always wanted, right? Better communication between us."

She nodded with a chuckle. "That is true." She ran her thumb up and down while continuing. "I love you so much and thank you for being on this rollercoaster ride with me."

He smirked a little. "Well, you know how much I love rollercoasters." She chuckled again before he continued in a more serious, but loving tone. "And as long as I'm in this with you, I love them even more. I love you too."

They smiled brightly at one another before they lean towards one another and kissed softly before they pulled back and held each other close.

End of flashback

When their minds returned to the present, Sara cleared her throat and looked down at the gift bag, finally realizing he had it, so she asked. "What is that?"

He picked up the gift bag and showed her the butterfly case. "The underclassmen in one of my classes got this for me."

Sara smirked. "Let me guess the class that Hailey is in."

He chuckled. "Do I even have to ask how you knew that?"

Sara smirked again. "Well, I may not be an expert, but I believe she has a hero worship thing going on with you."

He gets a shy look while speaking softly. "Sara."

She chuckled in return while cupping his cheek. "Which I can't say I really blame her on that." His embarrassment gets a little deeper while she continues. "But I met her and she's harmless. She knows where the boundaries are, so I don't mind that she and, well let's face it, all the others look."

Grissom raised an eyebrow. "All the others?"

"Yes." She nods without hesitation because she sees how other women, younger and older, look at her husband so she wasn't going to backtrack that statement one bit, then while wrapping her other arm around his neck and bringing him closer she finished in a low, passionate tone. "Just as long as they don't touch, because you are all mine."

If they weren't in a parking lot, a school parking lot at that, she would have led him to more than a kiss, and as they pulled back, he placed his forehead to hers and whispered. "Yes, dear you are. Heart, body and soul."

They held each other close for a few minutes before he sighed as he started to pull back. "Alright let's get our dog from Abigail's and head to the apartment so we can get ready for the party."

The big people, including the Dean wanted to give Grissom a going away party, and to say Grissom was unenthusiastic about it would be an understatement. He just felt it was unnecessary considering he was only there for one school year. If he had been then a lot longer, he might feel a little differently. But then again, he was a CSI in Vegas for 21 Years and he just walked out of the lab like a ghost, just like he always wanted, without a party, so maybe not.

She cupped his cheek with a chuckle. "They just want to honor you on a job well done, you did give that school a little boost."

"Yeah, maybe." He then smirked. "Or they are just trying one last ditch to win me over to stay."

She chuckled again. "You know you could be right on that."

They kiss softly before she whispered. "Alright, let's go."

After he nodded, they walked to the passenger side, and he opens the door for her before opening the back door so he could put his stuff in there before he headed to the driver's side.

Later that evening

While neither one was into the whole fancy parties and dressing up, whenever they did have to dress up, nether one could look away from the other, so they were just counting down during the whole party on when they can finally be alone again, and when they were about three hours later, they barely made it back into the apartment before they were all over one another.

Grissom quickly placed his arm behind Sara's head so the back of it didn't hit the door as she was shutting it with her back while she was pulling him closer to her as their lips were connected passionately.

They chuckled against one another's lips a second later before he pulls back and asks in concern. "You ok, honey?"

She smiled as she cups his cheek. "I'm fine babe."

Grissom's eyes move up and down her dress clad body as he whispered in passion. "You are absolutely right about that my dear."

She shyly smiled at his comment and the look he was giving her before she whispered in passion as well. "And you don't look bad yourself."

Once they were in their next round of passionate kissing, her fingers started to go for his tie to untie it before she went to the buttons of his shirt while he ran his hand up her back until it was at the top of the zipper before he slowly pulled it down, then he slowly removed his lips from hers and kissed her cheek, moving towards her ear and whispered. "Why don't we take this into the bedroom."

She pulls back while whispering in return as she took his hand. "You've read my mind, Dr. Grissom." Before walking them towards the bedroom.

The second they were in the room and had closed the door, their clothes were off and they were in bed, under the covers, just following the want, need and desire in them.

Sometime later while they were still recovering from their earlier activities, Sara, with the sheet up to her chest, was laying on her side while Grissom, who had the sheet up to his waist, was also laying on his side, both were smiling as she spoke. "You know, it's a shame we don't dress up more."

He chuckled as he cupped her cheek. "I think we've proven enough times that if we do dress up more, we probably won't be making it out the door, unless we 'had' to, like tonight."

She chuckled in return while moving closer to him. "You're probably right." They share a kiss before she cuddles up in his arms. "I just can't help myself when I see you in a suit and tie."

He kissed her temple before whispering against it. "I know the feeling when I see you in a dress." She was about to speak, but he continued before she could. "But honestly it doesn't matter what you wear, it still gets to me."

She smirked. "Good answer."

After a few moments of silence, she asked. "But tonight, was ok, right?"

He smirked in return while also knowing exactly what she was asking. "I would say better than just 'ok'."

She chuckled. "You know what event I'm talking about."

He smiled. "I know dear." He ran his hand up and down her bare arm. "And it was alright, even though I still think it was totally unnecessary, considering how expensive it looked with a lot of the 'big' people there."

She ran her thumb up and down his bare chest. "I know, it did seem a little over the top for someone who had only worked there for a year." He made an agreeable noise before she continued. "But you got admit it was nice of them to go all out when they could have just thrown you a goodbye party in the teacher's lounge at the school."

"Yeah, although I probably would have preferred that anyways."

She chuckled while shaking her head. "No, if you had your way, you would have just walked out like you did when you left the lab."

He shrugged like it was no big deal. "I just didn't see the point. I didn't want the fuss."

She moved so she was looking down at him while cupping his cheek. "Well maybe they did want to fuss over you, you were a very valuable member to that lab for years, and they would have liked to honor you."

He moved his hand to cup her cheek as he replied softly. "They already are, Catherine is a supervisor, Nick is the assistant and Greg is a level 3 in the mentoring/teaching position now, that's how they are honoring me, they are continuing to do good work for lab/city. I just didn't need a party where they honored me on something that I couldn't have done without them anyways."

She shook her head with a smile while running her thumb up and down his cheek. "You still like to give the credit to everybody else but yourself."

He smirked as he takes her hand off his cheek. "And you wouldn't have me any other way."

She shook her head again as she leaned down. "No, I wouldn't, that's one of the things I love about you."

When their lips touched it didn't take very long before it got passionate again and eventually they moved so he was above her, and after they pulled back, he whispered. "But as much credit as I want to give them, you deserve most of it, for not only doing what you do in the lab, but also helping me, so if anybody deserves to be honored, it's you."

She smiled with tears in her eyes while cupping his cheek. "And I feel that every time you look, kiss and touch me."

He smiled in return while leaning down to kiss her lips again, and while that want, need and desire came back full force, they took things a little slower this time, enjoying their last full night in their Paris apartment, and with them not sleeping much that night they also got to enjoy their last Paris sunset, at least for now. They did talk about coming back to visit someday.

When they finally got themselves out of bed the next afternoon, they made a lunch and put it in a picnic basket before putting a leash on Hank and walking out of the apartment so they could head to the park.

They were there for about an hour and half when they heard that familiar little girl's voice.

"Hank!"

Sara and Grissom look up to see Sadie running towards them while Hank ran towards her, being calm and gentle the moment he was near as to not hurt her.

Sara and Grissom look at one another with smiles on their faces while Sara spoke. "I can't wait to see how gentle he'll be with our little one."

Grissom nodded while squeezing her hand. "I know, honey, me neither."

They get up a moment later as Hailey got nearer.

"Good afternoon, Professor Grissom, Mrs. Grissom."

After Sara and Grissom greeted the young woman, Sara asked. "How is your day going?"

"Not too bad." She then sighed. "Although I warned Sadie that this will be her last visit with Hank and so I had to comfort her."

They looked at her with sadness while Sara spoke again. "We are sorry about that, and who knows this might not the be the last time she sees him, we are thinking about visiting every once in a while."

Hailey nodded with a smile. "I'm sure she'll love that, but I don't want to say that to her just yet, not until there are real plans for that."

Theu nodded in understanding while Grissom replied. "Of course, we don't want to get her hopes up just in case it doesn't happen."

"Right. Life can get unpredictable."

Sara and Grissom nodded again before he spoke again while looking at Sara. "You're telling me."

They chuckled before Sara asked Hailey if they had any big summer plans and Hailey told them she'll see if her work schedule could allow her to take time off, which she was hoping they could go so somewhere to spend time together without work getting in the way.

They nodded in understanding before their conversations turned to other subjects, nothing too important just something to talk about to let time pass them by.

Eventually Sadie wanted Grissom to come play with her and Hank, so while he was doing that, Sara and Hailey were sitting down on the blanket watching them play fetch with Hank, then Sara turned to Hailey. "Thank you to you and your daughter."

Hailey looked over at Sara with confusion. "What did we do?"

Sara turned her head to look at her husband with a smile. "For keeping him distracted."

Hailey chuckled. "You know it's kind of weird to hear a wife thank another woman for keeping her husband distracted."

"I know." Sara chuckled with a nod before she took a breath and continued. "But I trust him, and I liked the fact that he wasn't cooped up in that apartment or just going on short walks for Hank. He felt he had a purpose going out, even if most of the visits weren't planned in advance."

Hailey nodded with a smile as she looked at her daughter. "I think it had also worked with my daughter. I mean I know she would have been happy and content to playing on the play structure and doing some swinging, but there was an extra layer of joy playing with Hank, so it went both ways." She then sighed. "I just hope when he leaves it doesn't make her too depressed. Maybe, I just might finally get her a dog, she's wanted one for the last few years."

"It's a thought." Sara then shyly continued. "Now I feel like I have to apologize for that."

Hailey shook her head with a chuckle. "No, it's all good. It's been worth seeing how happy she looked."

Sara nodded with another smile as she watched her husband, seeing that joy and happiness in his eyes. "I know the feeling."

They spent the next 20 minutes in silence with the occasional laugh while watching each of their 'whole' world enjoying the time together, then it was time for them to leave since the plan was for Sara and Grissom to be out of Paris by tonight.

Sadie kneeled down and hugged Hank with a sad tone. "I'll miss you Hank, you've been a good boy."

Grissom kneeled down so he was eye level with Sadie and spoke in a comforting tone. "He'll miss you too. When you got to play with him it was his favorite part of the day."

She smiled as she pulled back from her hug with him. "You really think so."

Grissom nodded with a wider smile. "I do, you are his friend for life."

Sadie nodded. "He's mine." She then took a step closer to Grissom and surprised him with a hug. "And so are you, thank you Mr. Grissom."

Grissom hugged the little girl in return. "You're Welcome, Sadie."

After Grissom stood up, he looked at Hailey, and Hailey cleared her throat before speaking with emotion, sad to see someone she already looked up to leave but respected his decision. "Permission to give you a hug?"

Grissom looked at his wife, and she shook her head with a smile, knowing he doesn't like to hug just anybody, but it was still his choice. "That's up to you, babe."

He looked at Hailey with a nod and smile. "Granted."

While sharing a hug, Grissom told Hailey. "Good luck to you and your daughter in the future."

"You too, thanks again for everything."

"You're welcome."

Once they pulled back, Sara and Hailey shared a hug and also good lucks, then after pulling back Hailey looked at her daughter with a smile while holding out her hand. "You ready, sweetie."

Sadie nodded with a small sigh. "I guess."

After they said bye to Sara and Grissom one more time, Sadie and Hailey turned and walked away.

Hank took a few steps towards them until Grissom said gently. "Hank, stay."

Hank stopped and sat down with a small wine, not exactly sure what was going on, but had a feeling something was up with the way his human friends and parents were acting.

A few minutes went by before Sara and Grissom looked at one another before Grissom sighed while holding out his hand.

"You ready dear?"

They did want to make one more stop, Hank's sitter, before they were ready to go, and with Grissom already having the rest of his stuff packed and everything was taken care of with management all they needed to do was grab and leave when they made it to the apartment.

Sara nodded while taking his hand. "Yes."

He squeezed her hand while speaking towards their dog. "Hank, come."

While they were picking up their picnic basket, Hank walked back over to them before the three of them headed to the vehicle so they could leave.
