Ben 10 Transformed - ISSUE 5; One Hex of An Entrance (2 of 4); Spelling By Heart
So I got like five reviews in a day on Ben 10; Transformed version, AO3 readers just know its basically a simplified version of the AO3 version I put a bold text noting when the reviews end, just look for that if disinterested. Bold reviews are from and underlined reviews are from AO3.
Shriramasokan; You reviewed first - For sure, The Negative 10 aside from Driscoll were stinky, not much to add.
I guess I can say that I honestly only liked Animo in the reboot, where he fits in more in UAF is as his D'Void, his first appearance in Omniverse worked with how Rook responded so well to him, but he just isn't that consistent for me, probably an unpopular opinion but someone has it, Maybe even some else besides me.
But like Washington, B.C. was genuinely awful for me and painted even his good appearances as worse, so I'm quite biased. Don't take my word if you liked him in the Negative 10.
Kashiramji; You gave me four, so here's response 1 - Talking about Alien Force S3, Honestly I wrote this fic like three months prior to reposting so I don't remember exactly what I said about S3. So I went back and read. I couldn't find any mentions of season 3 especially asking anything. But saying you don't hate season 3 is a nice change of pace. I think it was bad, yes, but not the worst Ben 10 has ever been. I mean I even think Race Against Time was worse, but I might be alone on that hill.
I found that I complained about Alien Force adding a second Ken In Chapter 4, But he appeared in S1 exclusively, Max Out, it was my introductory episode. So I should just call him Ken considering it's a damn good episode and I have such an emotional attachment it made me go back and binge the entire classic series from shady TV show pirate sites and tune in whenever reruns aired, I liked it back then. Not that I dislike on demand HD with decompressed audio (Also, today I don't promote piracy. Especially, in the era of streaming services).
Kashiramji; response 2 - I agree the first two seasons of alien force are quite good, hell, maybe peak ben 10. I'd have to check my bias and others bias I've only ever seen positive things said about the seasons, especially season 2. But alone together is definitely my favourite episode of Alien force, hands down. UAF, and most of the reboot in general were my favourite bits of Ben 10.
Kashiramji; response 3 - You said something about him being reckless, he's definitely the the most reckless Ben could be. The big thing with reboot Ben is he's 10, while I believe most child characters need ego and such, shit like 'who's your hero' would unbearable even with a kid, the reboot writers realized this and set limits to how far he could go. Yes, he was egotistical even more often, but the age and amount got him away with it.
Kashiramji; response 4 - You said someone messaged you once that Charmcaster was intended to be or become good in OS by her uncle. Well I never really said her or her uncle's alignment. Just listed Charmcaster as a main character on FF.
A similar thing happened to Kevin. He's the main character of a side story I plan to write just I can age up the characters. Writing kids in a natural way just burns me out. (Minor spoilers in the rest of this paragraph), Kevin's a villain here and will be runaway before later being adopted by the foster parents of Ultimate Alien forwards. He won't know, Devin Levin outside pictures and stories, but will know a Mrs. Levin.
For anything on Kevin's alignment further than that, You'll have to wait and see. As you'll see in this chapter we get more from Ben than an obsession with super - hero's and plumbers. You get a whole Sci - Fi thing which will lead into him becoming able to pilot level 2 ships and such. He will also have an interest in professional soccer.
That's all for the reviews
Foreword 4;
Sorry about an unannounced update hiatus, I work slowly. I put on an indefinite hiatus the book I was working on, not a Fan Fiction, just a dystopian, far, far future high science fiction book. I'll probably talk about it in book 2 of this series.
Foreword 4 Continued;
There's a little bit of stuff in this chapter I decided to include early, it relates to aliens creating things and alien origins. I only included this as it is in Ben 10 itself and flowed the story better than with it axed out. I'd reccomend not taking it too sereiously as I don't, and I doubt many show creators even believe in this. It works for a cartoon though.
Foreword 4 Continued Again; Chapter 1 Gwen said; once I learn magic this is her reassuring herself she will learn, not a future vision or whatever.
Ken here. Uh, in Ben's place, and there's so much more to this universe than I thought. I'm seeing magic, that's way crazier than aliens! I dunno if I'm fit for this after all, to think we almost cut around Bellwood…
"We're surrounded. If you kill us you'll be shot. It's the logical tactic on both sides to each retreat." Max said slowly.
A ring came from the silver haired girl's cell phone. "Hope, our side of this little quarrel will meet at the Billion's Tower."
"I agree." Hope said, "Don't hurt the Weather Heads and you'll be left alone. I'd recommend trying to defeat the drones, they seem based on simpler tech than the Weather Heads."
"J-4 and RCxST-5200, the 5200's'll be tough." Xylene said
"Damn," Ken put his Proto Tool to his side. "5200's power the Proto Tool." When he was learning how to use one he was told how they were built, knowing that was required knowledge to get it to function, hence why it took a lot of skill and mental flexibility to use.
The beaten up purple tied one "But-"
"Shut up, purple. Do you want to end up scrambled? The less shown emotion, the less likely it will happen. Don't test me, brother."
"I see."
"We'll all meet up at the billionaire's tower. At the time of midnight, or at least the moon's peak. We rise to the roof and speak, I wish and do little fighting until then. Hope, eliminate the robots, Weather Heads, come with me. Don't expect the courtesy of being called weather heads by me anymore either. Purple, you protect from a distance, orange and blue stick close in close quarters.
"Uncle, hello weren't you just at the billionaire's tower calling me?" Hope's voice was shaky.
"Yes," There was opposition in the cool and slow hatred that filled her Uncle's voice. "I used transportation, I gave you a minute to slow the fighting. However you seemed to have only. Hope I do expect to be called Hex outside our private gatherings. If you must call me Uncle, it's Uncle Hex. Clear now?" He walked away slowly and hid in his cloak.
"Yes, Crystal, Uncle Hex."
"Good, now shut up and do work to them."
"Yes, Uncle." Hope's eyes widened. "Hex!" She blurted out, "Yes, of course, Uncle Hex."
Hex started a chant. "Telepartia Symphynia Ae Poynte Trilictus." He disappeared in a swirl.
"Looks like we're on the same team now. If all goes well maybe you could teach me magic. It'd probably go better than that Hex guy." Gwen giggled and raised a shovel to the robots.
"Don't speak ill of Uncle, he always learns of it." Hope warned, with a very concerned expression. However I admit, It'd be interesting for sure, or like I said he'd find out and we'd be toast.
"Don't trust your enemy too much Gwen. You could end up like me." Ken gestured over his wounded body.
"Tri - beastie rise as warrior, quad - beastie rise as ranged" Hope threw 7 purple lined patterned slightly rough stones onto the ground and they crackled and made a gurgling noise as they grew. Hope spoke threw the noise. "I could attempt a healing spell, I'm not great at it but it's likely to go better or equivalent to the ointment on its own."
"Ken?" Max prompted, and the attention turned to him
"Yes, yeah, of course. It's up to him in the end."
"Yeah, that sounds fair, try to make it up to me to drag me in for the quick kill."
"I Probably won't be able to restore you until about Earth weeks pass, if things go perfectly, and my healing slime is far more effective than any Earthly medical. I'd take it if I were you she's hurt by us and still fighting to protect us."
"Yeah, I suppose. If it'll take a while, I really should do it, I guess. And I'll stay in this great deal of pain. Your slimey crud really doesn't stop pain for a long time."
" -Charm's Hope - An Adwaiitya'ian Prayer-
Name of Addwaitya, Name of Grace
Kiss of all Charmed, Kiss of all Casted
Runed, Runed
Pray good come this man, well and thorough
May his blessed heart, May his blessed face
Feel well thorough, Good is this man
For I Charmcaster, For He Addwaitya
Runed, Runed
Kiss of all Charmed, Kiss of all Casted
Name of Addwaitya, Name of Grace
Heal thy face, Heal 'f Addwaitya"
"Give it a few days and apply more slime every good few hours - if possible, y'know because of sleep n' stuff. If I did my calculations correctly and didn't fuck it up, it should all be done."
"I'm not dead." Ken said, "I'm a strong believer that whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
"Scratch that jargon, where the heck did you learn to write poetry like that, and give me some back up as you answer.
"I found where the control module is, aim that shovel correctly with a good force a couple times, toward the neck -like area below the throat and they should fall rather fast." Grey Matter said hopping from one robot to another. "You really stink at this, ya Weather obsessed freaks!" He laughed a short bit.
Hope fired some mana blasts. "It's actually a bit sensitive, that whole thing about learning poetry. I'll tell you if you become -"
"Yes! Yes, I will we're moving to Bellwood shortly. Uh, it's when Summer ends, sorry I should have said something." Gwen was stumbling over her words, "But yes. Magic, please! Can I learn that one, or is there something or does it depend on my teacher, or should I call you Charmcaster or Hope or Miss, or-" She kept speeding up every part of the sentence. Including the pauses.
"End your sentence Gwen, sheesh." Ben said as Grey Matter, "You have even worse grammar than my human form."
"Hell, just stop all together and -"
"Shut the heck up, Ken!" She muttered a swear or two under her breath and got sloppy with the shovel. "Sorry, Uh - What do I call you?" She squeaked, as she noticed Hope laughing at her.
"Hope, for now, You'll see what I mean if you help me. So… you must be siblings or sum'n?"
"How'd you -" "Raghh!" Gwen knocked a robot drone out of the air where Ben's strategy took it out. "- know Miss Hope?"
"Really, Gwen? Again with the miss? It's. Just. Hope." Hope really emphasized her name this time. "You seem innocent enough, so I won't give you a warning. But I don't usually let people call me that."
"Sorry, Hope. I thought you meant marriage or something."
She fired some mana blasts and took down the last of the robots "I'd tell you not to worry about family if my stomach wasn't turning with what I have to do later." She looked at the fallout of her last scuffle then at the bloodied up Tennyson family. Ben transformed back into his human form right as words started to escape her mouth. "At least I won't be alone."
"Text me anytime." Gwen gave Hope her number.
"Thanks. Um, is that not magic what your brother does?"
"Cousin, and no." She looked at her Grandpa Max and Ben.
Max nodded and Ben simply said "Go ahead, then." As he crossed his arms.
"It's some kind of science based device, it stores alien DNA and allows for transformation for any reason Ben desires. We don't exactly know where it came from or how many there are, but we know Ben has one and uses it well."
"There's one." Xylene said when Gwen paused. "One known to exist and it's just a prototype, an alien like the one Ben just transformed into created it, his name was Azmuth, and no one knows his current whereabouts to my knowledge. Not even me, and I spoke with him years ago now, it's extremely unlikely that'll happen however." She paused and quickly added. "He's a rotten bastard though, when I find him, I'll kick his ass so hard that he regrows his tail."
"So they're like frogs?" Ken asked, "Are they as sludgy, slimy as Xylene? No offense but the slime used as ointment is weirder than the triple spoked tongue."
"I agree with my Brother. It's kinda gross to think about becoming part alien."
"Let's just start with basics, for Hope's sake. They're called Galvans, alien ancestors to the frogs and other similar creatures. Galvan Prime, their home planet, actually had a lot of species that came to lead into Earth's population. Just the same as us, they evolved from water based species into land based species. Ironically, frogs were the most land based species." Max said. "Obviously none of us know first hand, but it really does explain a lot of ancient geometry. It's unnatural consistency, for the time, was impossible for humans, hyper intelligent aliens though, easy."
"You sound like cruddy educational programming from the wrong hours of the day. Particularly in that latter part." Ben said.
"There's a reason they air those, Ben, even if most do just point and laugh at the whole deal. You, uh, sure you're alright in there, Ben, you seem so much more sci-fi oriented over the last few months, like significantly."
"He's 10, Max. Every youth develops then."
Hex lowered his body into a cross legged sit. He groaned a couple tones and as gravelly as his voice was it got a decent bit softer.
"Jinxed - A Poem to Appease the Mana Lord
Addwaitya allow me to take the time
It may take-"
It was a worker, he spoke in a very monotone voice "Who the hell are you? Why are you up here doing poetry or whatever?"
"Silence, leave the grounds, human. I'd rather not spill any blood today. Even darker coloured clothing can be blood - stained, and frankly this hood has faded."
"No need to -"
"Are you dense? Just step out." Hex kept his composure but felt as though he could burst. "Shut up shoo, child. Oh, blast it. Allow me one phone call." Hex pulled a phone, "Oh, and I'll be whispering, it's a very private matter and I do hope you don't listen in on the call." He smiled sorrowfully.
Hope's phone rang. "Uncle Hex? Why in Ledger are you whispering?" She flicked her eyes up for a short second. "Yes, Hex. He's here. Okay, I understand." A long sigh was let out. "Thank Addwaitya that's over." She hung up and stared down the weather heads. "Blue, Orange. You have orders to kill or evacuate the billions' employees from the inside. Purple, stay with Hex, he needs protection inorder to perform a meditative prayer.
"Kill? Why go that far?" Max asked. How many might be in that tower? Hope, It's the biggest building in New York, well the biggest in whole damn world potentially.
"The orders are only as far as we went for you. I clearly wanted to keep you all alive, we really needn't, shall we say, spill guts." Hope smiled. "I'd never want to, you 5. Some aid could help me accomplish my goal. Genuine."
"I think she speaks the truth. There's something more genuine about her than Hex, though how genuine her goal is." Max looked up. "To simply put it is that I remain uncertain. It sounds as though it could be a war though. She, well, seems headstrong enough to wage one starting with only a few small corps to lead the frontlines and recruit from there."
"So why do you look up, is this more alien bullshit to you?" Hope asked then added on . "It's more of an assassination I intend to rid this plane of existence of the strongest sorcerer it has ever known as he uses his power in ways far too tyrannical."
"Hex? I mean, or so I infer."
"Hex is a saint compared to Yacc'iledor."
"Yacc'iledor… That was an old friend of Verdona's… I could find her location, and she may know where he is. He never seemed all that bad to me though." Max paused, for he had noticed everyone else was silent, mostly still, they were each told Verdona died, all who knew was Hope who was confused at the look of confusion she was currently enveloped in. Max found the item he was looking for, it was long, a little over two seconds even, and the group stood in silence as Max grabbed a wide rimmed flat - ish circular prism and had the intergalactic peace symbol on it, same as the omnitrix, A Red Spot Plumber's Badge. "Hold on Hope, I might be able to contact Verdona."
"Wait so you don't know where in the heck she is?" Ben said, confused. "What if you can't contact her, I mean do you still know where she is if she doesn't answer the phone? What if-"
"It's more complicated and strained than a simple answer I'm afraid. And it's more than a phone." Max made some hand based gestures.
"I can do that with my omnitrix?" Ben asked, as he grinned widely. "Show me the gestures or whatever again, I have a damn fine memory."
"You of all people should know it's perfect with still images such as text, not motions or video or whatever else that moves." Gwen always figured this out, "Honestly you could be quite the magic user. I bet it'd help you beat up baddies." She emphasized the ending. Knowing he'd find the books and reading boring as heck, especially just starting with basics.
"C'mon, Gwen. Just go to the magic show if you're so obsessed." Ben complained
"Ben, Ken was totally gonna -"
"Yeah, well, I'm not dead, damn it!"
"And I wanna know what In the depths of Ledgerdomain that thing Max has is."
"This is a Plumber's Badge, see the dot? That's fo Magisters or people in charge of certain squads of Pumbers, more or less Basically a I.D. to say I am head authority of the galaxy. Almost a Chief of Police would have. To be frank, I don't know everything Hope. No one does. The Plumbers have split apart so much since they were created in who knows when in who knows where, for me the plumbers stated out containing aliens. And it was a mistake that work. We only realized when I met Verdona we dated, married, had kids, split up, and after we broke up we lost touch, by the time she wanted to see her children they wanted to cut ties with the alien lifestyle. It's the reason my grandkids were shielded, Then I met Xylene and she was so mad, I haven't seen her since." He was silent, but Gwen had questions, she was quickly cut off. "The omnitrix is far beyond my understanding. All the Plumbers I knew of thought it was one big myth, ala Excalibur. One story told to keep any Plumbers' enemies searching for an eternity but with no way to get it off it should mean fighting for an eternity."
"But, Grandpa-" Gwen got a word out but was quickly silenced.
"It's a ticking bomb you see. It grants eternal life, but if you die, all dies, the whole universe. Now, corrodium or a supernova level catastrophe letting off solar radiation,
"Grandpa, seriously? What the hell is corrodium?" Ben asked. "I've never been to space."
"Xylene?" He prompted.
"He has and it's common knowledge, even to low ranking Plumbers who never go to space." Xylene said in a very matter of fact fashion. "Let me explain, Ben." Her voice was breathy, Ben could tell she'd explained this hundreds of times before. "Basically corrodium is a version of Taydonite softened by galactical levels of solar radiation. Something Max didn't mention, the bomb, known as the Annihilarrgenesistoriathimiorgost, can also be set off if death of the user occurs, assuming Azmuth doesn't fix it anyway."
"Jesus." Ken said. "We need- Now, we need that thing off, I mean that thing needs to get out, stat! Well maybe, maybe Max would stand a chance if we got in a fight with Hex, but Ben, he can barely sit still!"
"We aren't killing Hex!" Hope screamed, her eyes wet with tears. "We were supposed to stop Yacc'iledor. Damn it, I should've never trusted kids and an old man. Not to mention you. Like you seem more war and combat obsessed than you are with doing the right thing."
"We will try our best not to fight Hex. We should win without murder or severe damage somehow, somehow…" Ken said with words full of their meaning.
"Well I know what was truly meant."
"Well Gwen? Your family or me, which will it be?"
"Hope, you know -"
Hope nodded. "I know. It's the worst part of being me. You'd choose both if you could." Hope smiled. "I'll be back, right now I gotta do what needs to be done."
"If anyone can do anything it's me."
"Purple got out just in time!" blue said flatly over an extranet based disposable communicator.
"So did I." Orange said. "Would've been bored to tears otherwise, uh- if I had emotions of course
"Literally, any longer would have signaled the power core inside of Purple crying instead of killing, though I fear his aggression has upped some. Reports of a suited robot in a purple tie slamming, slashing and flipping cars that came at him and I quote a newspaper 'To get revenge for Hit n' Runs', truly interesting. Maybe we'd best contact the experiment."
An alien came up behind the spaceship. "Lord Vilgax, I mean no disrespect but Miss Rojo is experimental, and worse yet, untested and untrustworthy."
Vilgax laughed, his red streaked arm flowed with rage as the veins inside bulked causing outer muscles on his upper forearm to contort through his shoulders exaggerating his build several - fold. "I don't know my limits! I am still weakened even after full - bodied repairs!" He shouted slamming and breaking " After all that I still know you don't nearly compare, Psyphon."
"Then why hire me, M'lord?"
Vilgax untensed and smiled. "Power, general service, and a clearer, more personable voice. You'll understand come a few years time. Release Rojo!"
"Yes, M'lord."
"So why'd you read the newspaper?" Rojo asked.
"I technically read an internet article like the extranet but way more limited in scope - oh, and slower too."
"So, I finally get to return to Earth. Remember Rojo, you liquify any jewelry, or metal in general, should you deny my request."
"How does it know when I deny you?"
"Simple." Vilgax said, "I control it, I don't see how else it'd work like that, on a budget where everyone hates me anyways."
"You seem to be more at peace with this conversation, why is that?"
"It's nice to speak to somebody and not be addressed as 'M'lord', in fear, or yelled at, Rojo, quite nice."
"Shit!" Rojo yelled, raising her cybernetic brow "That's it?" She cleared her throat. "Well, we're not exactly friends, Vilgax. Not after your manipulation."
"Believe you me, that is quite alright with me."
"So, you wish to be called Vilgax, sir?"
"Never speak like that again, Psyphon. There's a charm to you saying M'lord." Vilgax was genuine, Rojo knew her place for now. Psyphon hadn't yet learned his place. He was an unstable piece, that one. Sure, he was always extremely loyal, but always playing the waiting game, or at least that's the judgement Vilgax got from him.
He must be too loyal, it was all Vilgax could think, he'd instantly given up his world to be Vilgax's henchman, irregular behavior. No matter how you look at it.
Even before the omnitrix came into play Rojo and him had always been at each other's throats until the deal.

1 of 3 from c1shriramasokan:
It would've been interesting if Charmcaster was more or less redeemed, but had a moral compass that just didn't quite mesh with the crew. Which... we do see in this series, in how self-serving Charmcaster tends to be in most of her goals and motivations such as how she is willing to put others at risk or in harms way or exploit them for her own ends. She might be willing to work with the heroes if it furthers her goals, and some of her goals might be noble, but she isn't intrinsically heroic.
That way she could remain a separate entity doing her own thing most of the time, and team up with Ben or Gwen whenever more traditional, non-alien magic-y stuff is going on in which they need her help. And then in turn, they owe her a favor which she comes to collect on later for... morally questionable assistance that leads to yet another confrontation between Ben/Gwen and Charmcaster. It would've been a way to leave the story open to more plot threads.
my theory: charmcaster, as well as hex and most of the humanoids in ledegerdomain are part anodyte. anodytes are living mana, mana originates in ledgerdomain so anodytes may have come from or settled in ledgerdomain and when early humans as well as those of other species accessed ledgerdomain they interbred creating descendants that were some small percentage anodyte. adwaitcha I think is a dangerous combo. geochelone aero makes him immune to mana/magic and anodyte makes him a powerful user of mana. the other inhabitants of ledgerdomain had become so reliant on magic that any attempt to stop him was a foregone conclusion.
Response:
Interesting theory they are well controlled in mana so pergaps a being could, if mastered and retained enough mana, become a newborn anodyte. Therefore, foregoing the need to be an anodyte, who i'm referring to I won't tell. Feel free to use the idea in a serues that updates more than once a month if you wish, I wanna expand on that idea, but it may be too theoretical.
2 of 3 from c1shriramasokan:
One thing I don't like about Charm Caster in UA and AF is how they just retconned her age. They like to act as if Caster and Gwen are the same age, but when you look at classic, they CLEARLY aren't. Which makes moments like the excited happy hug a little awkward. Remember, gwen is like 16, 17 and Caster is like 26, 28. A tax payer and a teen minor. I feel like if they stuck to the original depiction of how much older she is supposed to be, this relationship would look alot different.
Apparently it was 10 to 15 in classic and 16 to 21 in UA, so perhaps the huge visual gap in classic is more-so the error rather than this rendition from AF and UA. We could also just blame UA/AFs art style making all teens look like full grown adults :/ That's one thing I appreciated with UAs art style, it did make the characters ages more accurately pronounced visually speaking.
Charmcaster is or might be the only villain to actually kill Ben Tennyson, Gwen and kevin at the same time. It wasn't vilgax, Dr animo or even ma vreedle to put them 6 feet underground, it her and her alone.
The only reason they're still alive was because her ressurected father understood how he was brought back to life and refused the offer.
Response:
Ironic? Debatable, definitely, but i think Charmcaster *in* ledger *with* a motivation could effortlessly take out ben and Kevin in Ulitimate Alien.
Omniverse Kevin still doesn't have the range making power inapplicable, ben has the greater power and range (I genuinely hate how powerful the death failsafe, but enough me), last of the trio Gwen confirmed the most powerful mana user. But would she be the best magic user?
Well, she has low resistance to other magic, ranged, or blunt attacks of seemingly any element. Think the sparker torch or whichever that was near the end of Ultimate Alien. She's smart but has low level knowledge of spells, encantations and any advanced magic languages, when we see her as a main character for the last time in ultimate alien. Charmcaster just out does her in everything but sheer control, debatably even overall control.
3 of 3 from c1shriramasokan:
Charmcaster is one of those villains you love to hate but since ultimate alien expanded on the ledger domain, now I kind of understand why her and her uncle hex became so power hungry to conquer earth.
Also since after the failed sacrifice she made with the 600 thousand souls including Ben, Kevin and Gwen's to ressurect her father, something broke in her. Now I just feel pity.
Charmcaster and Azula:
Both have worked for power-hungry guardians.
Both were reoccurring threats to the main cast.
Both have killed at least one of the main cast.
Both are fan faves.
Both have moments of being in moral grey areas and could be harboring redeeming qualities.
Both have worked with the main cast at one point.
Both were intended to have redemption arcs form the writers room.
Both, unfortunately, were viewed to be crazy for the sake of crazy. At least for the time being.
Response:
No clue who Azula is, so no speaking on that front, sorry. Personally, what I can say is I love to love Charmcaster. She's an easy top character for me along with Kevin and I've never felt a shred of hatred. sure the writing has been shaky as fuck for both of them but there were no hard retcons until omniverse.
Also no comment on the reboot. It butchered her and Kevin is… different, really goddamn different I might go further into that if prodded, it's messy. Just stories changing in the background, unless you consider the comic book episodes canon in some way. Which I doubt I need to explain how much that breaks Ben 10 Classic's established into pieces. potentially worse than season 3 of Alien Force.
