A.N Lena finally reads Lex's research and information on Krypton and it's people ...
Chapter Twelve - The Truth about Bracelets
The next day Lena decided to pull up Lex's research on Kryptonians. She had wanted to do this for a while to see what else he had found out about the culture and she had also decided to delete anything that would cause Kara to be vulnerable. That meant any information on Kryptonite or any other substance that Lex had found out about. She accessed Lex's private server, something she hadn't done in a long time, and began to sort through the information. She quickly found the information on making Kryptonite and deleted it. She knew how to do that and she made sure the information wasn't written down anywhere else. She found lot's of information on various weapons and delivery systems for it and deleted all that too. She had information on her own private server on how to protect Kara from Kryptonite, so the designs for the suit that fully protected Kara and a shield as well as the designs for the new suit she had created were all on there so she knew this information was needed.
She found details on experiments that Lex had performed using the Kryptonite and felt even more disgust for her brother and she quickly deleted this too.
Then she came across the details on the Fortress of Solitude and the data he had stolen from there. When she had glanced at this information previously she had not thought this was relevant to helping Supergirl so she had quickly moved on but now she eagerly read the history of Krypton. She learned about times gone past of their God Rao and what they believed. She learned how the turn to science made the religious aspects of the culture more tradition than actual faith in a deity.
When the information turned to interpersonal and relationships she realised that what Kara had said was true. Kryptonians really were simply matched based on their compatibility not based on gender and when a match was made it was confirmed by the wearing of a bracelet.
Lena's jaw actually dropped.
A bracelet was the same thing as an engagement ring to Kara. She thought back to Brainy's protest over using a bracelet for the suit and wanting to use pretty much anything else but he had never told her the reason behind his argument. She thought back to the day she had given Kara the bracelet and suddenly her reaction made so much more sense.
Kara had revealed her identity to the public just over two weeks ago and Lena had been working hard on the replacement for her glasses and she had finally completed it this afternoon. Daniel had just dropped her at the CatCo offices, ready for their movie night and she clutched the box containing the bracelet tightly in her hands. She really hoped that Kara would like the design. If she didn't then she could change it for her, she could make any changes that Kara wanted.
As she made her way out of the private elevator, she spotted Kara talking to Nia. Whatever they were talking about, Lena could practically feel the stress rolling off Kara.
"Nia I need something else to go on the front page, can you check with Jennifer? Oh and I need to schedule that charity event, and they want me to open that new hospital in Supergirl's honour. I also need to ..."
"Kara, you need to hire a PA." Lena said as she stepped next to her best friend who turned to her with a huge smile on her face.
"Lena!" she pulled her friend into a tight hug, "You're early?" she said as she glanced at her watch. "No you're right on time, sorry I guess I lost track of ... well time." Kara finished lamely.
"I repeat, you need a PA Kara, someone to keep track of your time so you can focus on everything else you need to do."
"Gee Lena, I don't know." Kara said.
"Nia," Lena turned to the other woman. "Please can you talk to HR about hiring a PA for Kara because she clearly feels guilty for some reason and obviously won't do it for herself."
Nia's grin got wider and wider as Lena had spoken to her. "No problem, Lena, I'll make sure it get's priority. Maybe then I can spend more time on my articles!" She winked at Kara." Later Boss!" Nia turned on her heel leaving the two of them alone just outside her office.
"Come on Lena, I'll just grab my stuff and then we can head off." Lena followed Kara into her office and shut the door behind them.
"Before we 'fly away' I have a gift for you."
Kara spun around and practically bounced back over to Lena. "A gift? For me? What did you get me?"
Lena wordlessly handed Kara the box with the bracelet inside and Kara eagerly opened it. She froze the minute she saw the bracelet. Lena watched as Kara dropped onto the sofa in her office still staring at it. Lena suddenly felt the need to explain. "It's your new glasses, well ... I mean new suit. When you have it on and you press that button it works like when you took your glasses off before. I checked with Brainy on the schematics. If you don't like it then I can make you a new one, a different design maybe but..."
"Lena, you ... I mean ... I ..." Kara frowned and glanced down at the bracelet. "Why did you choose a bracelet?" she asked, her eyes suddenly locked with Lena's.
"I noticed you never wear one so I figured a favourite piece of jewellery or your watch wouldn't have to be taken off so you could wear this all the time so you're never without your suit especially since you decided that you're going to keep wearing the suit when you're ... you know ... superheroing. I ... well ... do you not like it?"
"You don't have ... any other reason ... anything at all for you to have chosen a bracelet?" Kara asked, almost sounding hopeful.
"Well I just thought it was the best option ... you hate it don't you? I can make a necklace instead or ..."
"Lena, stop. I love it. Thank you." Kara smiled at her as she hesitatingly put on the bracelet and ran her fingers over it, almost reverently.
Lena hated that she had never taken the time to learn more about Kryptonian culture or even asked Brainy about why he thought a bracelet was a bad idea. Kara had probably dreamed about the perfect bracelet when she was young and still on Krypton just like girls on Earth dream about the perfect ring and proposal. Then Lena came along and just causally gave her a gift that should have come with so much meaning for Kara. Lena read on and there were pictures of the bracelets that had been used and the one she had given to Kara looked exactly like the one that her mother had worn. There was more information on the significance of the bracelet and how, once given, the bracelet could never be taken off. There seemed to be no mention of divorce in any of the literature, only an eternal bond that would never be broken.
She tried to think about this from Kara's point of view. Had the situation been reversed and Kara had given her a ring and not fully understood what the significance was, she would have kept the ring in the hopes that Kara had meant it how she wanted it to be given. Had Kara done the same? There had been so many moments since they had started 'dating' that Lena had thought, or hoped, that Kara had returned her feelings but she had no idea how to ask Kara about it without potentially pushing her away if she didn't feel the same.
She couldn't get the idea out of her head that she had accidentally proposed to Kara and Kara had actually accepted. All their kisses, all the times that they had held hands or hugged each other. The smile that Kara always gave her.
She needed to talk about this with Kara. She needed to ask her about the bracelet and how she felt about it now she knew.
