Erica came in to take Angela for her ultrasound a few minutes after Sam headed out to the waiting room. "Can you let my daughter know when she gets back? She went out to the waiting room to update her husband."
"Sure, they can both come back then. Is your husband here too?"
"No, my fiance is in Iowa but will be here tomorrow."
"Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you were married."
"No problem. I was married to my first husband, the father of my son, for ten years. My fiance and I met eight years ago."
"I thought that you said that your daughter and son-in-law were waiting for you?"
"Yes, they are. My fiance's daughter and her husband. But I've been like her mom for the past eight years, You see, he started off as my housekeeper. He and Samantha came to live with me and my son, Jonathan. We raised Jonathan and Samantha together from the ages of 6 and 11, respectively. Her mom died when she was very young, and my ex-husband was essentially an absentee father for pretty much all of Jonathan's life, so we sort of became a family. Eventually Tony, my fiance, and I fell in love. And soon we'll be married and having a baby of our own."
"Wow, what an amazing story! I love happy endings!"
"Erica, we are ready for Mrs. Bower now," the ultrasound tech called out into the hallway. "Here we go. Ready to see your baby?"
"I think so," Angela stated nervously.
When Erica returned Angela back to her ER room, there were three people waiting for her. "Jonathan, what are you doing here!"
"Mom, when Sam called to say that you and Grandma were in an accident, I caught the next flight home from Charleston. Oh, Dad sends his regards on the accident."
"You didn't need to cut your time short with him. You only see him twice a year."
"No way! My mom and grandma are way important. I already went to visit Grandma, and she can't wait to leave the hospital. Then I ran into Sam and Hank and found out you were in the ER, wo here I am."
"I'm so happy to see you, my son. So do you know..."
"Yeah, Sam filled me in. Is the baby okay?"
"They just did an ultrasound, so we'll see what the results are."
There was a knock on the door. "Hi, Mrs. Bower. I'm Dr. Andreas. We have your lab results back. I also took a look at your ultrasound images. It looks like you have some bleeding in your abdomen. Everything looks to be okay otherwise, but we will need to do surgery to find the source of the bleeding. I'd like to have that done as soon as possible. We will have our best gynecologist in on the surgery as well."
"Mom, I'll call Dad to let him know. Should I let Mona know too?"
"Yes, I think that's a good idea, Hank. I'll go let Grandma know if you don't mind calling Dad," Jonathan stated.
Angela laid in her hospital bed shaking and crying with her children surrounding her. "Jonathan, Hank, can you go make your call and visit? I want to talk with Mom for a moment."
"Sure, Sam," they said in unison.
"Mom, I know that you're scared and worried, but I know with certainty that you will be in great hands. The gynecologist, Dr. Shaw, is wonderful. I've been seeing her since I found out I was pregnant. She studied at Harvard, and did her residency at Mass General. We will all be waiting right here for you. We love you, Mom."
"And I love all of you. Thank you, Samantha, for taking care of me. You definitely got that trait from your father."
"I get it from ALL of my parents; you, Dad, and my first mom, Marie. We all look out for each other because that's what family does!"
"That's right, Sam! I'm so glad to have you as my sister, and Hank as my brother. And now we will have a new sibling too. And I will also be Uncle Jonathan soon too!"
"What did Grandma say?"
"She's trying to convince the doctor to get her into a bigger room so that you can be in the same room together since they won't let her down here."
"Sounds like my mother all right!"
Hank came back into the room and stated "I tried to call Dad, but I got his answering machine. I then tried calling his office, and Candy said that he got an earlier flight that is scheduled to arrive about an hour from now."
"He's on his way now?"
"Yes, Mom, he is. Candy gave me his flight info so I'm going to head to the airport to get him and bring him here. Anyone need anything before I go?"
"Thanks, Hank. Sam and I will stay here with Mom until they take her back for surgery. Then we'll head to the waiting area and wait for you and Dad."
"Sounds good, Jonathan. I'll be back with Dad as soon as I can. Mom, everything will be fine. The doctors here are great. They had us shadow some of the doctors while I was in pre-med classes." He then leaned over and gave Angela a hug, then gave Sam a quick kiss before leaving the room.
Erica came in to update Angela, Sam, and Jonathan on timing for the surgery. "Dr. Andreas is just waiting on Dr. Shaw to finish up a difficult delivery. I'm off for the night but Kathleen will be in shortly. She will be your nurse until you are taken back for surgery."
"Did you say Kathleen? Erica, has she been here very long?" Sam asked.
"No, she just finished her RN training last month."
Angela, looking between Sam and Jonathan, suddenly looked as white as a sheet. "No, it can't be. Please tell me it isn't HER."
"Mom, I'll go check at the desk. Jonathan, keep an eye on her."
"Of course I will Sam."
Erica walked out with Sam. "What's going on? Mrs. Bower looked like she'd seen a ghost."
"Kathleen is the name of my dad's ex-girlfriend, who nearly ruined my parent's relationship."
"Oh, I see. We can assign a different nurse."
"Erica, who's my new patient?" Kathleen asked. "Hi, Samantha. What are you doing here? Is it Tony?"
"Hello, Kathleen. Actually no, it's not my dad. My mom is here."
"Your...mom? Does that mean that Tony and Angela are married?"
"Not yet, but they will be soon. Erica, can we get another nurse assigned? I don't want my mom any more stressed with everything going on."
"Are you saying you don't want me to treat Angela? She was always so nice to me."
"Yes, but considering your past history with my dad..."
"Sam, Mom is asking for you!"
"I'll be right there Jonathan. Goodbye, Kathleen."
Twenty minutes later, Angela's new nurse, Christy, came in to take her down to pre-op. "You two can come with her until she is taken in for surgery," Christy said to Sam and Jonathan.
