Chapter 23

A/N: This is an AU story for the vampire diaries. I do not own the vampire dairies.

Ignoring their protests Caroline flashed into the tunnel, desperate to find Klaus. Whenever someone she cared about was in danger, Caroline would do anything to help them. Even if putting herself in danger as well. The tunnel was still rumbling and shaking slightly. Stones fell, but things were somewhat stable. She began to climb over a few rocks going the way she had seen Klaus and Elijah gone. She stopped for a moment and began to listen. Trying to pick up sounds or movements in the tunnels. She heard someone running and panting. She could tell that this was someone human, because of their heartbeat. She flashed through the tunnels making her way through them.

Klaus shoved the rock off him before moving to locate Elijah. Cracking sounded and Klaus turned to find Elijah bursting through a rock. Elijah shook his head and began to brush off the dust on his suit.

"I am getting tired of nearly being blown to bits." Elijah muttered.

"I think someone's here." Klaus noted. Klaus and Elijah flashed off through the tunnels trying to locate the heartbeat. Klaus finally flashed in front of him. "Going somewhere mate?" Klaus asked. The man looked at him before raising a gun. "You can't kill me, I am not your average vampire as well as not only a vampire." Klaus mused. A few shots were made that collided with Klaus abdomen. Klaus grunted when he felt the vervein and wolfsbane seeping through the wounds. Klaus growled in anger. His eyes flashing gold. Elijah grabbed the man and shoved him into a wall. Before Elijah could respond, the man had shoved a stake in his chest with vervein. Elijah grunted before the man shoved him off. Just as he was about to make his escape he was knocked over by something. Klaus was just started to get up after ripping the bullets out of his chest growling while he was doing it. He heard movement before the man was shoved into a wall. He grunted and moved to get up when something hard collided with his head knocking him out. Elijah cursed looking down at his suit. He wasn't in the mood for more dry cleaning. Klaus glanced to Caroline who stood there before she flash over to help Klaus.

"Are you ok?" She asked. Klaus nodded.

"What are you doing here love?" He asked.

"Saving your asses that's what." She smirked. Elijah moved to the man who was still alive.

"Well perhaps he will be good for questioning when he wakes up. Hopefully he hasn't lost his memory though." Elijah said before grabbing the man.

"I thought I told you to stay with Hayley." Klaus told her.

"I'm not a babysitter. And she's fine. Well except maybe a little annoyed with Oliver. But still."

"Caroline,"

"Klaus,"

"If you two are done, then can we get back to questioning him?"

Returning to the house along with Hayley, Klaus and Elijah tied up the man. Caroline and Hayley stood watching, as the man woke to Klaus and Elijah. He struggled with the ropes. He glared at them.

"Who are you?" Elijah asked. The man ignored him, Elijah's eyes dilated and he asked again.

"Compulsion doesn't work on people like me. You can kill me, I'll never tell you anything." Klaus glared at him.

"Death would be too easy, that's why I will make you beg for death." In one swift move Klaus broke his wrist. Caroline flinched when she heard the snap, before the man cried out in pain. Caroline had always hated torture, even if the man had tried to kill them, as well as succeeding in killing some werewolves.

"I may feel the pain in this body, but in reality 'he' can always give me a new one." The man said. Caroline studied him before a piece clicked into place.

"You're a passenger." Caroline said. The man looked at her.

"Well there happens to be one of you monsters that actually have a brain around here. Even if it's a blonde." Caroline glared at him folding her arms across her chest. It was bad enough that Damon made fun of her, always calling her Vampire Barbie or Blondie the names were annoying to her. Sometimes her friends didn't realize how intelligent she actually was. A straight A student but Damon and his stereotypes for her always felt degrading.

"A passenger? What's a passenger?" Hayley asked. Caroline glanced at her.

"A spirit possessing a body, most are at least from two thousand years ago." Caroline said. She remembered what Nadia had mentioned.

"Oh A+ for you blondie." She glared at the man. Before anyone could do anything, his other hand was free with a dagger in it before he stabbed himself with it. Elijah groaned before ripping the dagger out of him. Going to feed him his blood to question him some more. But he was already dead, blood dripping from his mouth. Caroline stared at the man who had been possessed by a passenger.

Caroline was sitting down in the living room looking up information on her phone. There had to be something about the Travelers, something anything. It was hard, because now it seemed as though they were coming here. She stopped when her phone began to buzz with her mom's number. Shoot she had forgotten to call her mom this afternoon.

"Mom," She answered.

"Hello Caroline, yes mommy can't talk right now at the moment." She froze hearing his voice.

"Tyler?" She was strangely confused. "What the hell is going on? What have you done to my mom?" She demanded.

"Oh Tyler, yes your ex-boyfriend isn't speaking right now. Dear sweet Caroline Forbes, I am Julian a pleasure to speak with you. I do hope we meet soon, I am sure it will be a real pleasure. Your mom's right here actually. She's just a bit tied up."

"What do you want?" She snapped.

"How about little red riding hood comes back to Mystic Falls away from her wolf unfortunately." Caroline glanced around the room before taking a step outside.

"And if I come?"

"Then mommy dearest here will live."Caroline thought about this. She bit her lip, this would mean she would have to leave Klaus again. But it wasn't like she would be breaking up with him. She just had to return to Mystic Falls. She could tell him that her mom was sick and she wants to visit her. She took a deep breath.

"Ok,"

"See you soon Caroline, hurry before blood is spilled." And with that the call ended.

"You intend to return to Mystic Falls." Caroline jumped and turned to find Elijah standing there. She swallowed hard.

"Umm…"

"Do not lie, I heard the entire conversation. I would advise to tell Niklaus, I am sure that he would not be please in finding out later that you had gone and put yourself in danger." She sighed and shook her head.

"I have to though Elijah, she is my mom. My family."

"My brother cares for you, you must know that. Imagine how much it would affect him if you got hurt or killed for that matter." She nodded.

"Elijah, he said that I had to come alone or he will hurt my mom." Elijah thought about this.

"Technically he put it as 'come back to Mystic Falls away from her wolf' implying only Niklaus.'"
