Chapter 24

Klaus was confused when he woke up this morning to find that he was alone in bed. Caroline was gone, he got up thinking that perhaps she was downstairs. Only to find Hayley sitting at the counter eating cereal. She looked at him.

"Oh great you're up, I was hoping to avoid you today." Klaus gave her a look.

"Have you seen Caroline little wolf?" Hayley shrugged.

"No," Klaus looked around the house but found no sign of Caroline. He was about to call her when he noticed the paper on the nightstand. Flashing to it he grabbed it like it was life or death. He read:

Klaus,

I have gone home because my mom is sick. I need to help her. I didn't want to wake you up though. You looked like you needed the sleep. I will be back soon. Don't worry everything's fine.

I love you,

Caroline

Well at least she wasn't trying to break up with him again. He thought. But why wouldn't Caroline tell him. And where was Elijah?

Elijah and Caroline sat on the plane in a long awkward silence. When Caroline had agreed to Elijah coming with her back to Mystic Falls she didn't think it would be this weird between them. She figured that she might want to try bonding with Elijah though. It was probably only fair because she was dating Klaus. Again. But she would count this time around as they were in a official relationship. When she got back she would work out the terms. There was no way in hell that she was breaking up with him again. Even if that witch voodoo lady tried to scare her again.

"So…Elena told me once that you write very eloquently…" Great way to start the conversation Caroline. "I mean you wrote her a letter about her compassion. She said she always found it something wonderful." Elijah shrugged.

"I have been around for a thousand years, it gives you time to decipher some of the meanings of life and death."

"So what are you like the original Shakespeare or something?" She teased.

"Actually, I did teach Shakespeare a thing or two before he became the world famous playwright as he is known today." Caroline's mouth dropped.

"Really?" Elijah nodded.

"When you have lived a thousand years Caroline, you will find that you will meet people that might be famous in the future."

"So are you going to tell me that you met Da vinci as well?" Elijah shook his head.

"I haven't met Da Vinci but Niklaus has." She looked at him.

"Really?" Elijah nodded.

"Niklaus will tell you that they were friends actually."

"Wow, I guess I could see that though. I mean he was a painter." Elijah looked at her.

"I am surprised that Niklaus lets you see his drawings and paintings. He has only let his family see them. And has only let a few paintings to places such as the Hermitage. But it always seemed like something personal to him that he wouldn't share with just anyone. But then again you are not just anyone." So Klaus really didn't show much of his art to everyone really.

"He's very talented." Elijah nodded.

"Did you know that when he first began painting it was still when he was human." Caroline looked at Elijah. "My father found out and destroyed all of the beautiful art that he had created. Before also displaying his hated for my brother." Caroline looked at him.

"I hope I don't upset you but why would you never help Klaus? Why did you let your father do that to him?" She asked. Elijah swallowed hard.

"You think I wanted to watch my brother in so much pain."

"I'm sorry I wasn't trying to imply that you were."

"It's ok. I still feel guilty because I never did anything to help Niklaus, I think it was because I feared for my own life. My father had shown abuse towards us as well, but none as much as Niklaus. Rebekah had been the only one to ever stand up to him. That was more then I could say for me. Every day I am reminded that I never did anything to help Niklaus. And sometimes I wonder if I had would things be different?" Caroline looked at him.

"We can't change the past Elijah. Watching your brother being harmed was wrong. But Elijah I think you made up for it." Elijah looked at her.

"I do not understand,"

"I mean I heard about what happened when Mikael came to New Orleans. You stood up to him when he asked you to help him kill Klaus. I think that might have been your redemption to Klaus." He looked at her.

"No matter what I do Miss Caroline, there will never be anything to make up for what happened when we were human. Caroline that was one time. I had watched Niklaus be harmed since the day he was born to the day he was turned. I don't think that I can ever forgive myself for that." Caroline touched his hand. He looked at her.

"Perhaps it's time to stop dwelling on the past."

Klaus entered the kitchen again and heard Hayley groan. He gave her a look.

"Now what do you want?" She demanded.

"Don't forget that this is my house Hayley and you should show me a much more friendly attitude or I could always put you on the street." She gave him a look.

"I am pregnant with your child." She snapped folding her arms across her chest.

"Your point?" He asked. She gave him a look. "Where is Elijah?" He asked.

"Elijah said that he had some business to take care of in M-She stopped remembering Elijah not wanting her to tell him that. But it was too late Klaus already knew.

"Call your wolf friend Jackson."

"Why?" She demanded.

"I am going out of town."

"Wait Elijah said Manhattan." He gave her a look before flashing to grab his jacket and car keys while also calling the airport for a flight.

Caroline and Elijah arrived, as they planned out the best strategy to enter her house. She had invited Elijah in before they entered but found no one there.

"Mom?" She looked around. "Mom!" She called again.

"Caroline? Is that you?" She asked coming from the kithen.

"Mom your alright?" Her mother gave her a confused look.

"Well of course I am alright, why wouldn't I be. Besides with all the supernatural drama going on I'm fine." She noticed Elijah behind her. "Oh Caroline how many times have I told you, stop inviting originals into the house it's bad that we have one of the worse ones that can enter." Her mother groaned. "No offence Elijah."

"It's quite alright Mrs. Forbes."

"At least this one seems more civilized." She commented.

"Mom I thought you were in trouble. I got a call from someone who said that they were going to hurt you." Her mother looked at her confused.

"Caroline, I have been fine. I think that Stefan and Elena are going through a tough time because they are doppelgangers and Travelers keep causing them problems." The phone rang and her mother went to answer it. Caroline turned to Elijah.

"Do you think this was a set up?" She asked. Elijah was confused as well.

"I am not sure, but I am going to find out some more information. You should be safe in the house. You have invited Tyler in but he may be dead. That's just his body with someone in it. So I don't think that he can enter. But if he can you give me a call as soon as you can."

"I can still go with you." Elijah shook his head.

"He could be out there. It's best if I just go."

"Ok be careful." Elijah nodded and left the house. Caroline turned to her mom who came out with her badge on now. "Work?" her mother nodded.

"I'm sorry we can't catch up right now. But maybe we can do it tomorrow. Where's Elijah?" She asked.

"He is going out to track down some information about the guy who told me your life was in danger." Her mother sighed but nodded.

"Just be careful sweetheart." She glanced at Caroline one more time before speaking. "Are you still with Klaus?" She asked. Caroline sighed and nodded.

"Yes mom I am." Her mother shook her head.

"I still don't like him." She argued back. Caroline rolled her eyes.

"I know. But I am happy with him. Can't you just let me be happy?" She asked. Her mother sighed.

"Yes, but I still don't get how he of all people can make you happy." This was going to be a long night with her mother.

Notes: So here is another chapter. Next chapter: Be prepared for something heartbreaking to happen to Caroline. Elijah sees someone again. Klaus comes back to Mystic Falls. Markos has plans. Reviews please.
