Chapter 13
::
It was impossible. It couldn't happen. But the words were there, plain as day to him. Even now, even after they had been forced apart and torn from each other's side, his pink and yellow human was still helping him. Still warning him. Still protecting him. She had passed the message on to Donna now, a message that resonated throughout all of time and space.
Bad Wolf.
::
Bursting out of the TARDIS the Doctor looked around, hearts pounding frantically as his eyes and time sense strained to see the danger that would be coming to his beloved Earth. Seeing nothing he grew confused. Moving in a circle, and still seeing nothing but an equally as confused Donna, he frowned, "It's fine... Everything's fine. Nothing's wrong. All fine!" Seeing a milk van a few feet away the Doctor called out, "'Scuse me! What day is it?"
"Saturday," the man replied, raising an eyebrow in silent question.
"Saturday? Good." Lowering his voice the Doctor tucked his hands into his pockets, eyes still scanning for the danger he knew had to be close, "Good, I like Saturdays." Beside him Donna shifted, finally speaking up.
"So, I just met Rose Tyler?"
"Yeah." And damn if the Doctor didn't feel his hearts speed up at just the thought of his Rose still trying to find him. Always was a stubborn one. He had known it as soon as she had swung across a vat of alien sentience on a chain to save his life. His fantastic Rose Tyler.
"But she's locked away in a parallel world." Snapping himself out of his thoughts the Doctor half-nodded, eyes narrowing. That was right, Rose was locked away, or was supposed to be.
"Exactly. If she can cross from her parallel world to your parallel world then that means the walls of the universe are breaking down." He had half a thought to slow down but there was no time, he had to get Donna to understand just how much danger everyone was in. "Which puts everything in danger, everything!" Frowning and taking one last look around he mentally cursed. How could Rose even travel between dimensions?! "But how?!"
Rushing inside the TARDIS the two didn't notice as the ground beneath their feet began to shake. Once inside the Doctor headed to the console, pressing the buttons and levers he needed and trying to figure out what was going on. It just wasn't supposed to be possible. Beside him Donna paused, looking sympathetic.
"Thing is, Doctor, no matter what's happening, and I'm- I'm sure it's bad, I get that. But..." Letting a small smile show she softened her voice. "Rose is coming back. Isn't that good?" The Doctor paused in what he was doing, as if the thought was just fully starting to sink in. Donna was right. His precious Rose was coming right back to him. Smiling he looked up, eyes twinkling.
"Yeah." A loud crashing noise and the room jolted around them, each reaching for nearest thing to hold them up. As the Doctor fell to the floor he mentally sighed, the universe simply did not like to see him happy, it seemed.
::
Rose Tyler was Bad Wolf. The energy may have left her but the memories and feelings had remained. She had controlled time and seen everything. She had seen all that could have been and all that was. She had been a Goddess of Time, someone who Time adorned, adored, and doted upon.
Once, so long ago she could hardly remember it now, she had been a simple shop girl. A human living her day-to-day life with nothing too exciting to look forward too. And then he had come running into her life, quite literally. A maniac and broken Time Lord who only wanted to do good...and to never be alone. And how could she refuse him anything when he had saved her countless times?
Bad Wolf was born for one reason alone, and that was to ensure that the Doctor was safe, and never alone. She may not have realized it at the time but looking back she did now, and really it was so simple as to why. She loved that alien, and she would follow him to the ends of the Earth- Their first date if she remembered correctly.
She was Bad Wolf, but she was also Rose Marion Tyler. And she wasn't about to let all the universes end before she could get back to her Doctor. Not on her watch.
Eyes looking up at the sky as her body settled from the dimension jump, right where the Doctor had been only moments before, Rose smirked. "Right, now we're in trouble..." Cocking the gun her eyes were trained on what she saw in the sky, something that was meant to be impossible, but it seemed that word didn't mean what it was supposed to anymore. Not to her.
"And it's only just beginning..."
::
Jogging up the stairs to the street she needed Rose Tyler blinked at the utter chaos that was going on around her. She was used to strange things happening, being a time and space traveler, but she seemed to have forgotten just how bad humans were when it came to the end of the world.
Walking through the streets calmly she smiled and nodded to a man who was ranting, bottle in hand. At the sound of glass shattering her head whipped around, seeing the exact place she needed to find. "Perfect." Once in the doorway she saw two young men, maybe teenagers still, were loading bags full of laptops and electronics. Rolling her eyes she almost snorted at the quiet whisper of 'stupid apes' in her head.
If she ignored it then she could at least pretend she had some sanity left.
"Right then, you two," Rose smiled, looking calm. Years, many years, ago she would have been brasher, making her voice louder and more bold than it was. Trying to look stronger than she was. Now she only took a page out of her first Doctor's book, looking as calm and unassuming as possible. "I think it'd be best if you put that stuff down, now, and run for your lives." Seeing the two turn bold and depreciating smirks on her she cocked her gun and raised an eyebrow. "D'you like my gun?"
The smirks were gone and in an instant they were scrambling, Rose rolling her eyes. Honestly. Taking the gun strap off she set it down by her feet, pulling an open laptop towards her and immediately hacking into the UNIT database. She had learned quite a few things on her trips with the dimension canon, and one of them involved doing clever things with a computer.
Pulling up the live feed she frowned at seeing there were spaceships at the center of the 27 planets. Trying to find out what they were did nothing but leave her anxious and worried. Something was headed towards Earth, and she had a feeling she wouldn't like what was on board.
Seeing a sound file was being broadcast to Earth Rose clicked it, brows drawing together. When she heard the never ending word, the word that still haunted her nightmares even so many years later... Swiping at her eyes she frowned and stood up, picking up her gun and slinging it across her shoulder. With the Doctor's oldest and fiercest enemy being the ones that were controlling this mess things just became a lot more difficult.
Once out of the shop she looked up at the sky and felt her heart stop for a second at seeing the same spaceship she had seen when taken at the Gamestation. The same kind she had destroyed and ripped apart with the power of time. Always. Always it came back to the Daleks. There was no escaping them. Not now, not ever.
Steeling herself Rose Tyler turned and headed towards her destination, she needed to find her Doctor, now. And she knew just how to do it. Ignoring the explosions and flames that suddenly happened behind her she focused her mind to find the people she needed.
Hopefully they would be willing to help.
::
Deep in the heart of the Dalek Crucible Dalek Caan felt amusement roll through him. Soon, oh so soon, the events he needed to happen would happen. Giggling and letting his voice carry in pitch and tone he almost laughed, "He is coming. They are coming. The threefold man and his golden wolf, they dance in the lonely places. Oh, creator of us all. The Doctor is coming..."
Bursting into hysterical and insane laughter Dalek Cann waved his tentacles. The others didn't even know what was to come, they were all so clueless! Oh but he knew, he knew exactly what was to come. How it would be and how it would end, and he was so, so pleased.
::
Wilfred Mott lowered his arm and blinked at the smoldering, and most likely dead, alien that had just tried to kill him and his daughter. Looking slightly behind the wreckage he saw a blonde-haired girl, one looking younger than Donna, holding a large gun and frowning grimly. Seeing what he just did he could only say one thing.
"Do you wanna swap?" he asked, gesturing to his paint gun. The woman seemed to brush the question off, approaching them and looking serious and hopeful.
"You're Donna Noble's family, right?" Wilfred nodded, the woman letting out a small smile before continuing, breathing as if she was out of breath and had been running. "I'm Rose Tyler, and I need you."
::
As Rose Tyler leaned against the wall of the small kitchen, Sylvia making tea quietly, she sighed. Ignoring the domestics these people really had been her last hope. To find the Doctor she needed to find Donna, it was that simple. It wasn't the scientists at Torchwood, her Torchwood, who had told her that. No, she had told them. Because she had been told.
Donna Noble was favored by Time, and it was now Rose's job to look out for her, for them. For all the children of Time, just like it was the Doctor's. When she had started her search to leave Pete's world it had only been that. A way to get back to her world. But as she had traveled she had learned, she had learned so much, especially when she had met different versions of the Doctor.
Getting back to the man she loved was her main reason for searching, but the other? The other was that she had a job to do, and no one else could do it. Only she could.
Minutes passed and soon all three were in various states of lost hope, Rose sitting at the table. Lowering her head she stopped at hearing a high-pitched beeping sound. A sound she had heard before. Looking over to the laptop where the Daleks were issuing their commands she blinked at the voice she heard.
"Can anyone hear me? The Subwave Network is open, you should be able to hear my voice... Is there anyone there?" Standing up from her chair Rose walked over, bending down to sit in front of the laptop, eyes widening in slight shock. It couldn't be but- Yet again...
"I know that voice." Seeing the static finally clear itself Rose felt herself grin wide, eyes sparkling. She would know that voice anywhere. Not to mention the gesture of holding up her ID.
"Harriet Jones, former Prime Minister."
"Harriet! It's me, it's Rose!" Frowning Rose looked at the laptop and then sighed. "She can't hear me..." Turning behind her she raised an eyebrow, "Haven't you got a webcam?"
"No, she wouldn't let me, she said they're naughty." Rolling her eyes she looked back to the screen, feeling her heart race. She was so close and yet still she couldn't be heard, just like always it seemed. Taking a calming breath she forced herself to relax, jumping into things wouldn't help her right now. Calm and logic however just might.
Hearing the names ticked off one by one Rose couldn't stop her growing smile. All these fantastic people, all of her and the Doctor's treasured friends and family. "You fantastic people, you," Rose chuckled, watching the screen divide into four parts. She thought the forth screen would be her's until she saw another girl appear on screen, looking just a bit younger than she did.
Seeing them all interact with each other, and Jack being his usual flirtatious self, she felt proud of herself for not overreacting at hearing the girl, Martha, had been a former companion to the Doctor. Maybe before this mess had started she would have been jealous or irate, like she had been upon meeting Sarah Jane, but now she only felt fondness. If Martha had been a companion, someone whom the Doctor had trusted, than she had no reason to doubt her. Especially not with the mess they were in.
"But I've been trying to find him, the Doctor's got my phone on the TARDIS, but I can't get through!" Rose sighed at the information, which only confirmed her worries.
"Doesn't seem like anyone's getting through," Rose mumbled, quieting down as Harriet continued talking.
"That's why we have the Subwave. To bring us all together, combine forces! The Doctor's secret army." Oh she liked that. Rose just knew there was a reason she still had a fond spot for Harriet Jones.
"Wait a minute..." Rose listened as Jack and the boy, Luke, explained about the Rift and telephones. It was crazy, it was desperate, and it just might work. Hearing that the network would start transmitting Rose worried her lip between her teeth.
"Yes, and they'll trace it back to me," Harriet explained, tone gentle but firm. "But my life doesn't matter. Not if it saves the Earth." Rose quickly dashed a hand across her eyes, wiping away any tears. She couldn't afford to be distracted now, not when this was their last hope. Tuning out the chatter behind her she pulled the laptop into her lap and sat down on the couch. She would help as best she could, just as she always did. "Now enough of words. Let's begin!"
As everyone scrambled to do their job Rose frowned, pulling up windows and information she needed, from UNIT and Torchwood, fingers flying across the keys. "No, no, no...it won't be enough. The power output needs another surge, something to get the Rift the energy it needs to get the message to the Doctor..."
"National grid online...giving you everything we've got!"
"Connecting you to Mr. Smith!"
"All telephone networks combined!"
"Sending you the number..." It wouldn't be enough- Unless... Fingers flying over the keys Rose smirked. She would love to see her Doctor's expression at seeing just what she was doing, rerouting every bit of power in London, and maybe England, to get them more energy. "Now!"
"Opening Subwave Network to maximum."
"Mr. Smith...make that call!"
"Calling...the Doctor." As everyone worked together Rose found her tongue sticking out of the side of her mouth in concentration. If she could just get this code right, and get the links working then... "Mr. Smith, now at 200%- Wait, three, four- five hundred percent?!" In the chaos Sarah Jane was the only one who noticed how that shouldn't be possible, how the computer shouldn't have been able to get that much power. And yet...
"Find me, Doctor," Rose smiled, pulling out her own phone and dialing the number she had memorized long ago. "Find me."
As the team worked Rose looked up at hearing Harriet's subdued voice. "Captain, I'm transferring the Subwave Network to Torchwood, you're in charge now. And tell the Doctor from me...he chose his companions well. It's been an honor." Rose heard the Daleks crash their way in, saw Harriet, headstrong and brave Harriet Jones, flash her ID card with her shoulders straight. "Harriet Jones. Former Prime Minister."
"Yes, we know who you are," the Dalek spoke, Rose shuddering and boosting the power levels at Jack's Torchwood. If she could boost the power as much as she could then the Doctor would have an even stronger signal to lock onto. He'd have no chance of failing in finding them.
"Oh you know nothing of any human. And that will be your downfall." Seeing the screen go blank Rose sighed, not stopping from her task. Later. Later there would be time to mourn, for now she had to stop more people, more brave and wonderful people, from dying like her friend had.
In what seemed like seconds Harriet's screen was filled with the Doctor's face, Donna right behind them. At once everyone began talking over each other, trying to explain the situation. Rose could only smile, fingers trailing across the screen lightly. She was so very close to him now, and yet still... "I came back, Doctor. Just like I promised."
"Everyone except Rose." As the words left his mouth Rose chuckled, feeling her vision turn watery. After all this time and he hadn't forgotten her. He still kept her in his thoughts.
"Oh, Doctor..."
In a flash the screen had changed to all static, a voice coming out from it. A voice that sent both Rose and the Doctor's blood cold, although neither knew the other's reaction. Jumping up from her seat Rose almost threw the laptop down as she backed away, rubbing her arms.
"Rose?"
"He can't be here," Rose denied, eyes flashing gold as she took another step back. "I was there. I was with the Doctor, one version of him, I was there when he- He can't be here." It was impossible. Davros was meant to be dead, nothing but dust now and yet- If he was here then... Listening to the conversation Rose shook her head and tried to focus. She couldn't let her mind wander now.
Pulling out her phone she speed dialed the number she needed, waiting impatiently. "Control? I need another shift. Lock me onto the TARDIS. Now." Gun once again on her shoulder Rose tucked her phone back into her pocket, looking up at Donna's family. "If Davros is here and the cause of the Daleks then that changes things- Or maybe it changes nothing." Shaking her head she smiled. "Right then. Time to find the Doctor. Wish me luck!"
At their cries of good luck Rose sighed and let the energy move around her, the canon shifting her to the TARDIS's location. There was no more running around, no more missing him just by a second, no more being lost. It was just her finding her Doctor, just as she always did.
::
"Think, Donna, when you met Rose in that parallel world what did she say?" There had to be some reason as to why the Daleks were taking the people, but what?
"Just...the darkness is coming." Donna shook her head, as if she could barely remember the words. Seeing the Doctor's desperate look and question Donna looked behind him, freezing as she saw someone very familiar. Same blue jacket and all. Small smile coming to her face she looked back to the Doctor, voice soft, "Why don't you ask her yourself?"
At the question the Doctor froze, body turning around hesitantly before he saw something that could have only been from a dream, and one he had frequently. Rose only smiled and laughed, the two running toward each other without any more thought.
They had been so close, so close. But then Rose had set her gun down and the Dalek from nowhere and- It couldn't end like this. Not like this. Not after all she had gone through to see him again. Rose just barely noticed when Jack appeared and blew the Dalek into nothing but scrap metal. She instead skidded to halt next to the fallen Doctor, human heart beating frantically.
"Doctor, hey, hey, you're okay. It missed you, right? Yeah, it missed you. Doctor look, it's me." Voice wobbly Rose pulled the Doctor into her lap, body shaking. No, no, no not after she just found him again. Seeing the man's tired smile she smiled back.
"Rose..." Trying to force down the pain the Doctor almost laughed. "Long time no see..." A part of him couldn't help thinking that if he was dying then it was only right he should be held by an angel. His angel.
"Yeah, well, universes to save, people to order about. Been busy," Rose rambled, hugging him closer. "Defender of Earth and all that." At his gasp of pain Rose felt her panic increase as she tried to hold on to him. "Please Doctor, not now. Please no, not- God, don't die. Don't die!"
"Get him into the TARDIS, quick! Move!" There was no time for hellos as Rose nodded, her and Donna working together to move the Doctor into the TARDIS, Jack following behind them with both guns. Once they were inside Donna started panicking, asking about medicine, but Rose could only stare at the face of the man she loved. She didn't want to go through this again. Not when she just found him after all this time. "Just step back- Rose! Do as I say, and get back. He's dying and you know what happens next."
As Jack moved towards her to pull her away Rose looked down at the Doctor, looking stern, "If you come back without any hair I'll laugh at you." She thought she saw a twitch of a smile on his lips as she was pulled back towards Jack and Donna.
"Will someone tell me what is going on?!" Looks like this was another companion that didn't get the update on the regenerations. She really needed to have him fix that, maybe make a list of things that were likely to happen once you came into contact with him. Or maybe a business card. 'Time Lord – the Doctor – Yes I am out of my mind, now RUN!' Yes. That could work.
"He's a Time Lord," Rose smiled sadly, looking at Donna. "When a Time Lord dies their body, it repairs itself. It changes. They stay the same, he stays the same, but some things change. His quirks, his voice, his speech habits...his whole body..." Seeing the alien lock eyes with her she sniffed and forced herself to smile. "For a Time Lord you have horrid timing, you know that?"
"Oh, just the worst," the Doctor chuckled, regeneration energy bursting forth from his skin as Jack put his arms around the girls, all three hiding their face from the light. Rose didn't care if he did change, he was still her Doctor.
And she would still give him a hard time over thinking she wouldn't make it back. Daft old alien.
So there were some changes to Rose's behavior and personality in this story, and you'll figure out why those are there later on in the story. Why she's acting more grown and mature, and more like the Doctor. Give it a few chapters and it'll make sense. I will say this though, traveling with the dimension canon can take a very long time.
Years, in fact.
