After that surprisingly good dinner, Chiron stood and announced this Capture the Flag game that was going to happen tomorrow. Kenji tapped his fingers against his knee as he looked around in a mildly amused fashion as the campers of Camp Half-Blood whispered excitedly to each other. In the Hermes table beside Kenji and Nico, Kenji caught snippets of their conversations.
"Ooh. I hope we win this time!"
"-weapons-no maiming-no dessert!"
"-Hunters-"
Nico looked around curiously, "What is so interesting about Capture the Flag?" Kenji agreed with Nico. Camp Half-Blood was supposed to be teach these demigods how to survive. What does Capture the Flag has to do with survival?
Kenji shrugged, giving Nico an honest answer, "I don't know." As far as Kenji's knowledge goes for Capture the Flag, it is a game where there were two teams and their objective was to capture the other team's flag and get the flag to their side of the field. Doesn't seem like it could help someone in a life threatening situation.
Chiron stomped his hoof against the ground in an attempt to silence the conversations between campers. After what seemed like a minute or two, everybody quieted down.
Chiron said, "I would also like a announce a new camper within our mist, Nico Di Angelo!" As everyone started clapping, Chiron gestured for Nico to stand. Nico rose from his seat unsurely, awkwardly shifting his weight from feet to feet until the clapping subsided. When the clapping finally stopped, Nico hastily say back down, relived that the attention was off him once again.
Chiron cleared his throat and continued, "I would also like to welcome an unexpected guest, Kenji Di Angelo!" The words, the mortal, was unsaid but heard by everyone in the pavilion. Chiron seemed nervous, but also gestured for Kenji to get up and so he did. There were no clapping this time. Clarisse and her posse glared at him hatefully from where they sat and Kenji stared back stoically. After a couple awkward seconds, Kenji sat back down.
"Now, moving on to Capture the Flag-". Before Chiron finished, the whole pavilion erupted into chaos. This is supposed to be the army that protects Olympus from Kronos? Kenji stared unamused at the arguing demigods around him. Only three words resonated in his mind: We. Are. Doomed. There's no arguing about it. Chiron stompted his hoof on the ground angrily, "Be quiet!" The pavilion silenced once more.
"Thank you. Now, Capture the Flag. Since the Hunters are visiting, we will have our traditional game of Capture the Flag with them. And for those who don't know. When we have this game, it is Campers against the Hunters." Even without the campers' angry mutterings and the Hunter's smug faces, Kenji knew that the Hunter had won every single time. Even Chiron muttered, "And the Hunters won every single time."
Chiron continued, "Because Kenji is a mortal, but is a brother to a demigod, he will need to attend all the activities of a demigod, including Capture the Flag." Practically the whole hall burst into laughter, minus Nico and Kenji. Kenji could hear Clarisse over the roar of the demigods' laughter, "The mortal will be pulverized! He won't last a day!"
As the laughter died down, Chiron cleared his throat again and said, "Kenjo will need to because even though he himself is not a demigod, a member of his family is. Kenji needs to know how to protect himself from monsters that will come after Nico. That will be all."
All the demigods from all of the tables started to walk out of the pavilion and towards the area where the cabins were. Campers bunched together and soon turned into a crowd of orange. Campers yelled their goodbyes to their friends from other cabins.
Nico tugged on Kenji's hand, "Come on! Let's go to the Hermes cabin! I'm tired!" When Nico first started talking his voice was excited and full of energy, but by the time he stopped, Nico was swaying from side to side, his eyes drooping, despite Nico's effort to keep his eyes open.
Kenji smiled slightly, "Ok. Let's go."
They walked towards the cabin and right as they stepped through the doorway, twins stepped in front of them, wearing the exact same smile on their faces. One of the twins exclaimed, "Welcome to the Hermes Cabin! We are a little bit crowded, but we'll make room for you guys! Right guys?" They addressed the rest of the the cabin. The cabin groaned in reply and Kenji heard one of the campers mutter, "This cabin wouldn't be so crowded if the gods would just claim their kids."
The other twin added on, "We only have one bed left, so you guys will have to share a bed." The other twin pointed to a lone bed at the back of the cabin. Nico shrugged and said tiredly, "Ok," and dragged his feet over to the bed.
He yawned, but his tiredness soon left his eyes when he cocked his head in question staring down at the surface of the bed, "Did someone accidentally leave their weapon on the bed?"
The entire cabin chorused, "Nah." "Not mine." An unnamed camped called out, "No. But I bet a god gave it to you because right when you guys entered the camp, the weapons appeared on the bed."
One twin piped, "And being sons of Hermes, we, of course, tried to steal it." The twins shared a look and shuddered, "Didn't end up so well."
Nico peered at the weapon, "It does say our name. See? Nico," he pointed to a bracelet, "Kenji," he pointed to the bow and arrow.
A bitter demigods scowled, "Why did one of the gods give a mortal a gift, but not one of their own kids?"
Practically half the cabin murmured their agreements. The twins coughed awkwardly, "Well, there's a bed there for you two." And in an effort to change the topic they exclaimed, "Hey! Look at the time! Lights out!" The lights that were previously lighting up the cabin was suddenly dimmed and disappeared, allowing the blackness of night of overtake the cabin. The campers grumbled, but climbed into their bed and proceeded to go to sleep. Along with the darkness, silence also overcame the cabin, the sounds of the even breathing of the cabin was the only sound that were heard.
Kenji blinked as Nico looked over the harmless looking bracelet. Nico frowned as he examined the bracelet, "Whoever gave me this bracelet obviously doesn't know I am a boy. I mean look at yours, you have an awesome bow!" Nico sighed and bent to pick up the bracelet. Kenji tensed, he wasn't sure whether the bracelet was safe. Even the most mundane objects can be turned into a deadly weapon. Especially in the mythological world. Nico grabbed the bracelet and placed on his wrist, "Well, at least I got something," he pouted. Nico shook his wrist to get used to the weight on his wrist. The bracelet jingled and the charms on the bracelet attracted Kenji's attention.
Kenji edged closer to the braceletand asked Nico, "Can I see your bracelet for a second?" Maybe the bracelet isn't as useless as it looks.
Nico nodded and held up the hand that held the bracelet. Kenji grabbed Nico's wrist and looked closely at the bracelet. Small charms hung from the main chain of the bracelet. There were many charms. There was a sword charm, a bow and arrow charm, a knife charm, for some reason, a backpack charm. Kenji frowned, for some reason these charms were bugging him about something, that these charms aren't really what it looks like. Propelled by some urge, Kenji pulled on the sword charm.
Suddenly, a swirling mass of something swirled around Nico's hand. The darkness of the cabin was preventing Kenji from seeing what exactly the substance was. Kenji's hand inched towards his hidden knife, ready to protect Nico from this unknown substance. As quickly as it came, it left. Kenji's hand relaxed. What remained of the substance was a gleaming black sword that was clasped in Nico's hand.
Nico stared shocked at the wickedly gleaming sword in his hand, "Oh my god! Where did that sword come from?" Nico's head whipped up to stare at Kenji, "What did you do?"
Kenji pointed at his bracelet, "I think it came from your bracelet. Because the sword appeared when I pulled on the sword charm."
Nico stayed still for a couple more seconds before exclaiming, "That is so AWESOME! I take back my words. My gift is so much better than yours," he finished smugly.
Kenji smiled amused, "Ha. Ha. Ha."
Nico now frowned, still holding onto the sword tightly, "Now, how do we put the sword back in?" Nico examined the surface of the sword, "Is there like a secret button or something?" Nico started pressing random places on the handle of the sword, "Nope, no secret button."
Kenji suggested, "Why don't you hold the handle close to the sword charm and see what happens?"
Nico nodded, "Good idea." He held the sword handle against the charm and suddenly the sword seemed to be pulled into the charm until it disappeared. Nico's mouth dropped open, "Woah! That is so COOL!"
An nearby annoyed demigod growled at Nico, "Will. You. Shut. Up? I'm trying to sleep here."
Nico cringed, "Yeah. Sure," he said back apologetically, more softly than before.
Kenji bent down to pick up his own bow and arrows, his fingers wrapping around the bow. When he picked up the bow, he immediately knew that this bow was made for him. Everything was perfect for him. It fit him even better than the hunter's bow, something that Kenji thought would never happen in his lifetime. And to think, a god gave him this bow. But, why? Not that he wasn't grateful for the magnificent bow. He was forever grateful. Kenji ran his hand across the surface of the bow, marveling the perfection in which it was made.
Kenji tore his eyes away from the bow, his bow, and looked around for a quiver along with arrows, but to his dismay there were none. He murmured unhappily, and he was not pouting, "What good is a perfect bow without arrows?" He sighed. Moving on to the next problem, did his bow have a hidden form like Nico's bracelet? He thought of the Hunters bow in his possession and how useful it was to disappear when he didn't need it. And then, the bow disappeared. Nico gawked at the area where the bow use to be and, to simply say, freaked out, "Where's your bow? It just disappeared!"
Kenji concentrated on the bow again, and the bow appeared in his hands once again. Nico nodded, "Now that is cool. Though I still think mine is cooler. No offense Kenji."
Kenji shrugged, making the bow disappear again, "None taken." Kenji then looked at Nico strictly now that the excitement was over, "Time to sleep, like everyone else."
Nico whined, "But I'm not tired!"
Kenji raised an eyebrow, "Just sleep."
Nico pouted, "Fine." Nico climbed under the bed and burrowed under the covers and proceeded to fall asleep immediately. Kenji smiled at Nico fondly. Glancing at Nico one more time, he walked out of the Hermes cabin. Kenji looked up at a tree that was situated conveniently near the Hermes cabin's front door. Time to go back to sleeping in trees. Kenji scaled the tree before settling on a steady branch where darkness overcame his vision.
As soon as the darkness came, it left. Kenji opened his eyes, fog obscuring his vision. Kenji raised an eyebrow at the peculiar dream. He muttered, "Curious. Curious."
From the cloud of fog in front of him, the silhouette of a girl stumbled out of the fog. A very familiar green hat tumbled off her head. Kenji felt his body freeze. The girl that was in front of him was Bianca. Kenji momentarily forgot he was in a dream and lunged forward to pick Bianca up and protect her while checking her body for wounds. As Kenji was close enough to pick up Bianca ad bent to pick her up, his hands passed through her skin. Bianca groaned and stood up, not giving Kenji any indication that she knew he was there.
Bianca swiped up her fallen hat and slapped the hat on her head. Next, she brushed off the dust that clung to her pants, jacket, and hands. The roar of a beast sounded from behind her and her eyes widened in horror as she saw something that Kenji couldn't see despite how much he craned his head to see the mysterious beast.
Bianca scrambled past Kenji and ran away, the beast's roar trailing behind her. Bianca soon disappeared from his view as the shadow of the mysterious beast came nearer. Right when Kenji was about to see the beast, white swallowed the image.
Kenji felt the sensation of falling before coming to an abrupt stop. In front of him was fog covered just like the other location, but it seemed...darker. He could see the ground clearly, but in the area in front of him was covered by swirling fog. From behind him, there was a crash and a startled yell. Bianca crashed in front of him. She jumped to her feet and looked around cautiously. As her eyes surveyed the location around her, something caught her eyes, but what she yelled really startled him, "Nico!"
Kenji whispered, "Nico? Why would Nico be there?"
Bianca ran forward and Kenji hurriedly followed behind her. Kenji lost sight of Bianca, but when he turned a corner, the sight of Bianca tugging on the chains that were holding someone who looked exactly like Nico where he was. Kenji was startled, the last he saw Nico, Nico was safely inside the Hermes cabin where dozens of other campers were sleeping. Was this the future?
Kenji stared at Nico. Nico was carrying something above his head and that something was most definitely extremely heavy. Beads of sweat rolled down his forehead and his arms and legs shook at he strain of carrying something that most definitely beyond Nico's capabilities of holding.
Bianca stared at Nico, promising, "I'll get you out of there brother."
Nico just grunted in response.
A dark voice chuckled, "Aww.. So cute."
Bianca whipped around, "Free my little brother," she demanded.
The voice paused, the tension filling up the silence, before the voice started chuckling, the voice answered back amused, "Why should I little one?"
Bianca hesitated before declaring boldly, "I'll take his burden instead."
"Be my guest."
Bianca's face hardened with determination. She dropped to her hands and knees and started crawling next to Nico. She knelt beside him and braced against what Nico was carrying. When Bianca situated herself she pushed against what Nico was carrying. Already beads of sweat started to roll down her face, her face scrunched up in concentration. When she was lifting it, Nico rolled out and she grunted as the weight mostly likely increased. Because of the weight, she tilted her head forward, her shoulders helping her hands in the burden of lifting the heavy object above her.
Nico got up, brushing off his clothes. Nico turned to face Bianca, smiling evilly, "I can't believe you fell for that, sister."
Bianca looked confused, "Wha-t?" she strained out.
The black hair of Nico's body started to fade into a blonde color and Nico's face started to change, the previously smooth face changed to show a horrendous scar. In Nico's place stood an completely different boy.
Bianca widened in horror.
The stranger smirked and started to walk away. "Have fun!" he said dismissively.
The sides of his vision started to blur and whiteness overcame his vision again.
He had the feeling of falling again and the whiteness cleared, Kenji groaned, "How many times is this going to happen? It really is getting old."
Bianca was still underneath her burden, her face full of pain and concentration. As Kenji looked closer, there was a grey stripe in her hair. He frowned and hoped that she was still okay and will remain that way until he has the chance to get to her.
A silver clad girl suddenly appeared and gasped, "Who would dare impose this burden on an innocent maiden?" she asked furiously.
The same voice chuckled again, "And you can save her, goddess."
Artemis brandished her bow, "Show yourself."
"I thought you wanted to save the maiden."
Artemis growled, but knelt down beside Bianca and tried to heave the burden off Bianca's shoulder. And she succeeded, groaning as the weight increased on her shoulder. Bianca collapsed in exhaustion, her legs collapsing from underneath her. Two cyclops, distinguishable by their one eye, lumbered out of the darkness and picked up Bianca, hauling her into the darkness. Suddenly, everything dissolved.
Kenji's eyes snapped open and he shot up, forgetting that he was on a tree branch. He lost his balance for a moment before his hands grabbed onto the branch to prevent him from falling to the ground and pulled him back up. He sighed relieved.
He leaned backwards, his back against the tree trunk behind him. As he relaxed on the tree branch, his mind wandered to the dream he just had. Was it real? Kenji didn't know. He hoped it wasn't, but he had a feeling it was. A stinging pain shot through his hands. Kenji groaned, "Agh." This time accompanying the pain was a big headache.
As Kenji continued to think about his dream, he dedicated had his consciousness to repair most of the cracks. He had to learn this skill because this was happining more often. But there was something wrong. Deciding to fix it, he delved into his consciousness. When he opened his 'eyes', he surveyed the area around him, more specifically the wall. As he looked more closely at the cracks, there was this golden liquid leaking out the cracks. He tried to touch the shimmery liquid, but as he touched it, a pain shot up his arm and he quickly snatched his arm back. What the hell?
He shook his head, wanting to focus more on the cracks then deal with the gold liquid later. He fixed the cracks (well, most of them), but was ripped out of his head when he heard someone shouting his name.
"Kenji! Kenji!"
Kenji looked down from his branch, it was Nico.
Nico inquired from beneath him, his voice disbelieving, "Did you sleep in a tree?"
Kenji answered, "Uhm... Yes?"
Nico exclaimed, "Wow! Can I?"
Kenji frowned, putting the dream at the back of his mind, "No!" he replied sharply.
Nico pouted, "Fine. Be that way."
