4. Unexpected
"Really. What kind of father tricks his wife and daughter about his business trip schedules? He knows how much mom and I hate having flaws in our plans!"
"Geez. I feel sorry for uncle Carl. His daughter is so unromantic."
"Hey. We might have to reschedule our visit to the Ice rink. Is that okay for you?"
"We can go skating anytime we want, Els. But time with your dad? Especially after his company moves to the west and your parents move away?"
"That's gonna take more than a year from now, you know."
Elsa rolled her eyes as Chatrine giggled. They were driving down the empty road, with piles of books filled at the backseat. Elsa gave a glance at the books, strengthening her grip against the stirring wheel. One-fourth of them about math, which was for Chatrine, another quarter of them about chemistry, which was for Dominick, and the rest was about architecture and business, which was for both Elsa and her father.
Elsa's father ran a large architecture company, which was one of the largest ones in the nation. Both her parents and Elsa herself didn't like the idea about Elsa inheriting the company, since it wasn't a good idea for her to go out publicly and earn a lot of attention. Yet due to her extreme cleverness, which was hard to be hidden, everyone except her family expected Elsa to be the inheritor. Even though not wanting to do it, Elsa had to at least act like she was interested in it, too, since letting down all those expectations wasn't a good idea for now.
"Are you sure you got all the books for Dom? It would have been easier if he came along."
"I'm pretty sure about that. And even though he came along, he wouldn't have been able to come home with us. The backseat's full."
"Yeah, but... Aren't you being a pushy? He could have really needed to come to the bookstore for his books."
"...I really need to be apart from him for a lot, you know."
Chatrine let out a deep sigh, which was followed by another one made by Elsa.
Chatrine and Dominick weren't really a brother and sister. Not biologically. Chatrine's mother, who was a Korean, divorced with her father and lost contact ever since. Dominick's father had passed away when he was 3 years old. When Elsa and Chatrine were 8, Chatrine's father and Dominick's mother, who was also Elsa's aunt, got married, making them all a family.
"He really needs to meet with other people. Meet other girls, make other friends. I can't always be there for him. And most of all, I don't have the same feeling as the feeling he has for me."
It had been obvious for quite a long time that Dominick's emotion toward Chatrine wasn't just brotherly love. Even their parents, and even Elsa's parents, knew about it. They were all worried, but since Chatrine didn't feel the same way, it wasn't considered as so much of an issue around the family. They all though if Dominick was able to meet a lot of people, he would be able to change.
"But the problem is, Chat, Dom wouldn't even give a glance at other girls while you're around. Unless she's your friend."
"Yeah. I know. That's why I keep trying to get along with Kristoff's sister and her friends. They all look kind. And they all seem cute."
"Well, since they pointed out your arm, I think they wouldn't be considered as a protagonist for him."
Chatrine sighed again and banged her head against the window. Elsa tried to joke about breaking the window with her head, but the seriousness of the situation didn't allow it. The best thing to do now seemed to be changing the subject.
"Talking about freshman girls, by the way, that restaurant Hans uses to make out with them is approaching."
"Well, he wouldn't be so much of a fool to try it again after getting all those disciplines for... Hey, ain't that Kristoff's sister?"
Elsa looked at the direction Chatrine was looking at. There was that girl. The redhead girl who was Kristoff's sister. She loomed like she was drunk. And the man who was pushing her into the car was...
"Hans?"
Elsa and Chatrine shouted at the same time. Elsa instantly pulled up the car to the side of the road. Both of them quickly unfastened their seatbelts and approached to Hans, who was about to get on his car.
"Hans!"
Hans looked at the direction the two girls were coming from. The moment he spotted them, Hans suddenly fell to the ground, his legs losing control.
"Wow. Uh... Hi, Elsa. And... Chatrine."
"Yeah. Whatever. So. Can you tell us what the heck is going on here?"
Elsa folded her arms as Chatrine asked him sarcastically. Hans was famous for these stuff. Poison a freshman girl, get her unconscious, and make out with her. He didn't get into big trouble after doing that, since his father was one of the richest men around town who could control stuff like that.
But compared to Elsa, he wasn't even considered wealthy or powerful.
"Um... Well. I was just drinking with Anna here. And... She got drunk so I... Was just trying to take her home."
"Your home, or her home? Do you even know her address?"
"Uh..."
Hans kept avoiding Elsa's gaze. She huffed and released her arms.
"Well. Since we are friends of her brother, it wouldn't be hard for us to know where she lives. We'll just take her."
With that, Elsa pulled the unconscious Anna out of Hans's car. She dragged her to the bacj seat of the car. She then realized that it was impossible for her to fit in, with those books filling it.
"Here. I'll do it."
Chatrine moved a few stack of books to the bottom and brought some to thw front seat which she sat. This made enough space for someone to stay crouched in a ball figure.
"I really hate that guy."
"I'm pretty sure every girl in the campus does. His brothers are nice, though. Don't know where he gets does traits from."
Elsa said as they drove away from Hans, who was left alone with a chaotic mental state.
"Urgh. He ain't getting the phone."
"Kristoff?"
"Yeah. I'll just text him about this. Wow. She's really lost her mind."
Elsa glanced at the younger girl through the back mirror. She didn't know what type of method Hans used to lure her, but she was sure it wasn't a clever one. And being tricked by that seemed even less clever.
"Oh. It's him. Hey, Kristoff?"
「CHATRINE!」
Even though she didn't have the phone against her own ear, Elsa could hear Kristoff's voice clearly. Chatrine pulled her phone away from her own ear.
「Thank you so much! God, I was about to PANIC!」
"You knew what was going on?"
「I just heard from Anna's friends that she was on a date and it was with Hans! Is she alright?」
"Well. She did lose her mind. But it seems that there is no physical damage ."
「WHAT?! She lost her mind?」
Chatrine carressed her ear, frowning. Elsa beamed at her friend's gesture.
"Relax. She's alright. Just tell her where she lives and we'll bring her home"
「Oh, right. Thank you. Its... Oh, um Chatrine?」
"Yeah?"
「Um... You live near school, right?」
"Yeah. Why?"
「Her place is about an hour and half driving distance from school... Would it be okay?」
Elsa and Chatrine stared at each other. It was nearly midnight, and they were around school. Dropping this girl and coming back would take about 3 hours.
「It's pretty late so... Would it be okay if she just stay at your place for tonight?」
"Uh..."
Chatrine stares at Elsa, who was gaping as she heard what Kristoff had just said. There were a lot of solve if they were gonna do that.
"Okay, um... I'll take care of her for tonight."
「Thank you so much for everything, Chatrine.」
As Kristoff hung off, Chatrine turnes towards Elsa.
"Everyone in my house is home tonight. That means even the couch is occupied. "
"Just let her sleep on the floor, then. There's no other way."
"...Actually, there is."
Elsa waited for her friend to continue while driving. Several seconds passed, but Chatrine didn't speak a word, which made Elsa turn towards her and find her staring at herself.
"What?"
Elsa asked worriedly.
"Mommy! Is Elsa still not home yet?"
Olaf asked as he ran down the staircase. Whitney rose from the couch and closed the book she was reading.
"No, she's not. Maybe she's staying at Chatrine's tonight."
"Doesn't she always give us a call if she does that?"
Carl asked as he looked up at his wife. His eyes were filled with worry.
"And that place is crammed. Ever since Charles's family came bursting in Anthony's house is like a crowded subway. There's no way she's staying there for the night. There won't be enough space for an extra person."
"Then, where do you think she is?"
"Well, we..."
Riiinnngggg
Carl rose from the couch and grabbed the phone.
"Hello?"
「Dad? Is Olaf out in the living room?」
"Elsa? Where are you?"
「I'm... Just... Is Olaf in the living room?」
"Um...Yes, he is."
「Can you bring him back to my room? I'll be home in a few minutes.」
"Uh... Okay."
Carl put the phone down as his wife stared at him.
"Is is Elsa? What does she say?"
"She just said that I should Olaf back to her room if he is not in it."
"What? Why?"
"Don't know."
Carl shrugged as he put his hands on Olaf's shoulder.
"Come on, little guy. Let's go back to your Ice Castle."
"It's not mine. It's Elsa's! She made it!"
"Yeah. But a building isn't a property of the builder once it has residents."
Carl lead Olaf back upstairs where Elsa's room was, while Whitney was left standing in the living room.
Creak
As Carl came back to the living room, Whitney heard the front door open. Ready to greet her only daughter, Whitney approached to the front door only to find Chatrine and Elsa with another girl leaning against Elsa with Elsa's arm around her shoulders.
"Hi, aunt Whitney. Welcome back home uncle Carl."
"Welcome, dad."
The two girls said as the two adults stared at one another, not knowing what to do in this unfamiliar situation. Thinking that he should say at least something, Carl finally spoke up.
"What happened?"
Elsa and Chatrine stared at each other.
"Where do we have to begin?"
"From the part you helped her in Professor Keeling's class, I guess?"
