Chapter 8: The Letter

Zero did not tell Kaname what he had seen and acted as if nothing had happened. The two remained outside until the sun began to dip below the building's height, turning the sky a shade of orange, like that of a fire.

"I believe it is time for dinner." Kaname announced with his hand around Zero's waist, leading the silverette.

However, Zero had other ideas, gently wiggling his waist out of Kaname's grasp.

"I'm sorry, Kaname. But, I think that I would rather eat alone tonight in our room." Zero explained.

Kaname looked confused and slightly hurt. He looked to be wondering if he had somehow offended Zero. Thankfully, Zero was kind enough to put Kaname's worries to rest.

"I just have a slight headache and don't think I would be able to handle the frivolity of a communal dinner right now." Zero used this excuse as an explanation for his actions.

"Of course, if you are feeling unwell then that would be best." Kaname agreed sweetly.

*kiss*

Kaname placed a small kiss to Zero's forehead.

"Kaname, what are you…?" Zero was surprised that Kaname had kissed him even though he had just said he was ill.

"Checking your temperature." Kaname explained. "It doesn't seem as if you have a fever, which is good. Hopefully it's just fatigue and you will get well soon."

Agreeing with Zero's plans, Kaname wrapped his arm, once again, around Zero's waist. It seemed that he liked keeping the silverette as close as possible, even when just escorting Zero from one place to another.

Kaname had left for dinner with his other family members and a few of the high-ranked soldiers who were also visiting, leaving Zero alone in their room. When one of the castle's attendants delivered his food he wolfed it down, leaving the bowls empty within minutes. His appetite had not been affected. He did not have a headache, contrary to what he had told Kaname.

That little white lie was told to Kaname so that he could be alone. Zero specifically needed to be alone now, since he knew that Rido would be occupied at dinner. It may have been his instincts, his intuition or his curiosity which made Zero do it. Whatever the reason, Zero had decided to try and find the letter which he saw Ryouga give Rido while they were in the garden.

Thankfully Kaname had given him a tour earlier and pointed out Rido's room. Kaname may have pointed the room out so that Zero could avoid it. However, Zero was desperate to find out the contents of the letter. He did not like being left out of the loop.

The castle was quiet and Zero did not run into a single person on his way to Rido's room. Nonetheless, he still crept around the coridoors of the castle silently, just in case.

The attendants must be busy with the dinner preparations…

Having reached the room he remembered to be Rido's Zero slid open the door and entered, shutting the door behind him so that it did not look disturbed. Rido was of course at dinner, exactly as planned, so now all that Zero had to do was find the letter. He was glad with the sparse décor, as it meant that this task hopefully wouldn't take him long.

In and out with no one to know that he was here. That is what Zero was aiming for.

Zero first went towards the writing desk as it was the most obvious place.

Nothing, of course…

Zero then tried the futon.

Again, nothing…

However, then Zero noticed a large, expensive fragile vase in the corner of the room. It was the kind of thing that no servant in their right mind would touch out of fear for breaking it. If Rido wanted to keep that letter truly hidden, then surely that was the place.

Ah-ha!

Zero could make out three fragments of paper in the bottom of the vase. He reached down carefully and picked them up. It was, indeed, the letter, ripped into three sections.

Seriously…If Rido was planning to get rid of it, why rip it up? Burning it would be far more effective…

Even though he was concentrating on the letter he could not help but criticise Rido's sad attempt at disposing of the letter.

Putting the three pieces into order, Zero began to read...

...

Rido Kuran,

In response to your previous letter I can confirm that the silver-hair your nephew is fraternizing with is, indeed, working for me. It is as you have assumed, that this silver-hair is the same one that entertained us when we last met face to face.

I have sent him to kill Kaname, as you requested, to bring you one step closer to ruling the Kuran family. The reason he has not assassinated your nephew yet is because I have asked him to give me some information about what Haruka is planning while he is there.

I know that you may wish to provide me with this information yourself, but we cannot risk your betrayal becoming known yet. I can assure you that my pet is extremely efficient and I am sure he will have success with his tasks.

All you have to do is look like a strong and wise leader, then the hunters shall grant you power. Together we can rule over this country and bask in the rewards of our efforts.

T. Yagari

...

Zero finished reading the letter and placed the pieces back inside the vase. As he silently made his way back to the room he was supposed to be in, he thought through what he had just read. Immediately it told him two things:

"I have sent him to kill Kaname, as you requested."

It is Rido's fault that I must end his life…

"Together we can rule over this country and bask in the rewards of our efforts."

Rido is working together with Yagari to gain power and rule over the country for the sake of greed…

However, aside from these immediate facts, another sentence drew Zero's attention:

"It is as you have assumed, that this silver-hair is the same one that entertained us when we last met face to face."

I've never entertained Rido. Yagari must instead be referring to Ichiru… which means that Yagari doesn't want Rido to know who I really am… which means that Yagari doesn't really trust Rido…

Odd, considering that they want to rule the country together…
