Chapter 30
Pretty Little Lovers Untamed
Chapter 30
After Aria left, Hanna showered and got ready. She dressed in a cute little spring dress and curled her hair just the way Ali had originally taught her. She thought she looked good but it really didn't matter because she was just going to meet Caleb and it was Emily who she wanted to see.
The afternoon sun was heavy on her arms and that plus the worry already settled in her stomach made her sweat. By the time she got to the diner she'd agreed to meet Caleb at, she felt like a mess again. But he did his best to make her feel better.
Caleb had on a nice dress shirt and some pressed shorts. His hair was brushed and he smiled at her and stood up when she approached their table. "Hey," he said, "You look beautiful."
She tried to return his smile but she felt sort of sick and just slumped into her chair instead. "How are you?"
He shrugged and took his seat once more, sipping on a water that the waitress must have brought him. "It doesn't matter how I am. How are you?"
She laughed nervously. "Kinda really terrible."
While Caleb was sort of relieved to find out Hanna was in as bad a place as he was, he also felt kind of terrible about it. So he just stayed quiet until the waitress came over and took their orders. He got a sandwich and Hanna got a salad. Just like her. It always annoyed him before but now he was just glad that she was eating with him at all.
He was half way through his meal when he couldn't handle the silence anymore and had to say something. So he wiped his mouth on a napkin and told her, "Listen, I don't care anymore if you like Emily as long as you stay loyal to me. I know there's something emotionally going on between you two and I can't begin to compete with that but I don't want to lose you completely. I do love you Hanna and if you like Emily I will just have to deal."
Hanna's eyes were already fogging up with tears and she shook her head and stopped picking at her salad to look at him. "It's not like that Caleb. I don't just like Emily. I love her. And I can't be loyal to you because, well, I've already been physical with her and there's no going back. I want her so bad it's driving me mad and yeah, I care exponentially about you, but I also can't stop feeling for Em or wanting Em."
Caleb had taken another bite and he nearly chocked on it as he desperately tried to swallow it plus the lump that had formed in his throat. "You.. You've been physical with her? You love her?"
It actually had felt really amazing to admit that, and Emily was stunned into silence. So she just nodded at him.
"I understand," he said, and pushed back from the table. He pulled out his wallet and laid a twenty on his plate. "I wish you two the best, I really do. But don't contact me for a while okay? Because maybe you're in love with her.. But I'm in love with you and it really really stings." He gave her a really sad look and then turned and left her there alone with his half-eaten sandwich and her salad.
While it had temporarily been a relief to Hanna to finally choose between Caleb and Emily, she'd also gotten lost in the moment and forgotten about the reason why the decision had been so hard. She'd forgotten that even though she had just ended things with the boy she'd been with so long, who had cared for her and helped her and her friends, and loved her unconditionally.. She wasn't even sure that it was for anything at all but pain. Because Emily had left without saying goodbye that morning and there was a large chance that the girl would choose Alison over her, because honestly who wouldn't, and Hanna would be alone without a boyfriend, a girlfriend or a bestfriend. Because life sucked lately and Hanna was beginning to wonder if it would ever stop sucking.
