Adler opened the front door and the new allies stepped into the night. The Doctor shivered in the cold night air and pulled his jacket closer around him. Outside in the street was a black taxi, the type that was stretched with extra room in the back. The back windows were tinted black and the light on top was off.
'Get in the front' instructed Adler. 'Sherlock's in the back. He's still sleeping but he'll be fine in about half an hour.' The Doctor climbed in the left hand side and Adler got in the driver's side. The Doctor twisted around to look in the back. Sherlock was laid out across the three back seats and one of Adler's people was sitting on the seat facing backwards.
'Doctor, this is Beth; Beth, this is the Doctor; he's coming with us.' They nodded to each other. 'Doctor, what's your Starfleet friend's name?' asked Adler.
'Julian Bashir' he answered.
'Beth can you get any and all details of Section 31's previous encounters with him please?' Beth nodded and pulled out a laptop from a side compartment. The Doctor pulled on his seatbelt and Adler turned the taxi around and headed along Baker Street. As they left the apartment behind them she glanced over her shoulder.
'How's Kate?'
'She's still at the hospital with Ben, they took her straight in. They were just about to take out the bullet when I last spoke to him' replied Beth from the back. Adler looked relieved.
'Contact them again, tell them both they can sit this one out – I'm sure me, you, and Will combined with Sherlock and the Doctor here can handle this.'
'Yes, about that,' butted in the Doctor, 'what exactly is 'this' that we're handling?'
'We'd heard Section 31 was around and getting ready to recruit.' Adler began to answer. The Doctor gave her an inquisitive look. 'I have my sources,' she replied. 'Until that fight in the apartment we assumed Section 31 was trying to recruit Sherlock which is why we went after what we thought was him last night in the street. Section 31 already keeps a close eye on me so we had to do it… covertly. When I saw it was your doctor I realised there was something more going on we headed to Baker Street and you know the rest. ' The Doctor nodded slowly, taking this in. The whole situation seemed strangely comfortable, considering the circumstances; this woman had turned up trying to kidnap Sherlock, knocked him out and now he was in a taxi with her heading across London but he still didn't sense any danger.
'I've got a few questions,' the Doctor said, 'Firstly you seem quite familiar with me, have we met before?' Adler shook her head.
'No but again, I have my sources. I know enough about you and your universe to be familiar with you.'
'Okay, where exactly are we going?' Adler nodded towards the woman sitting in the back.
'Beth knows somewhere we'll be able to stay without Section 31 knowing about it. It's no hotel but it will do for a few nights. Just until we can get your doctor back and get you back to your universe.' The Doctor paused, thinking over his next question. The taxi pulled to a stop in front of a red traffic light.
'Why do you have such an interest in Sherlock?' he asked. Adler turned her head towards him. He could tell by the expression on her face that she hadn't been expecting that question. As the light turned green she turned away to face the front again and the Doctor could've sworn he saw her blush slightly.
'That's none of your business.' There was uneasy silence as the taxi continued to turn through the London streets. The Doctor still had one burning question he wanted to ask but he didn't want to disturb the peace any more. Eventually, however, his curiosity got the better of him.
'Why are you helping me and Julian?' Adler raised her eyebrows and gave a small shrug.
'I don't like Section 31 and they don't like me. Anything that will inconvenience them or stop them adding to their numbers is in my interest. And seeing as they've bothered to bring you and Bashir from another universe, I assume they want to recruit you pretty badly.' The Doctor gave a wry chuckle.
'Well that may be true for Julian but I doubt they've got the same in mind for me. My record isn't exactly… clean.' There was a pause.
'Well then we've got something in common.' Adler turned to look at him with a smile that the Doctor couldn't quite place but nevertheless, he returned it. Suddenly both their attention was drawn to the screech of tyres down the road to their right. The Doctor peered around Adler to see what was going on. A taxi honked indignantly as an official-looking black car tried to squeeze through the two rows of traffic queuing in front of the traffic lights. As soon as Adler saw the car she muttered under her breath and spun the taxi to the left, closely missing another car, and accelerated down the road.
'Beth, grab a t-shirt; you need to drive,' she called behind her. 'I think they've found us.'
