Amy paused, it still felt like only yesterday.

She looked at Sheldon and continued, "Sheldon, this is harder than I thought it would be,"

He furrowed his eyebrows, "What is?"

Amy sighed, "Talking about it," she took another breath, "Emotionally, this is really hard, but considering we're both doctors with the capability of understanding the analytical, I will present the information in a different way,"

Sheldon nodded once. Determined she began, "Once Penny and I arrived at the hospital, the labour began to move very rapidly, at which point I was told to change into a gown, doing so I started to get the overpowering urge to push so Penny called the doctor who began to check me,"

Sheldon listened intently, he was both scared and nervous about finding out what Amy had to go through.

"The doctor informed me that I had an umbilical cord prolapse, this is when the umbilical cord precedes the babies' exit,"

Amy paused, she mustered every ounce of the scientist in her and continued, "The doctor called in more doctors and nurses and there was even talk of a Caesarean section but ultimately they decided that I needed to push the twins myself and quickly because they had very little oxygen getting to them and their heartbeats were beginning to falter,"

She closed her eyes as if reliving the moment but opened them with the same look of determination as before.

"Tyler was born first, he was blue and tried so hard to cry but it only came out as strangled sobs," she whispered the final parts, as if she was afraid it would all come back.

"His right lung had collapsed and he was immediately sent to the ICNU,"

Sheldon looked pale, almost as if he was watching everything play out in front of him at that very moment.

"It was worse for Marie," Amy continued, "She was limp and purple when she came out. Both her lungs had collapsed and she wasn't breathing, they took x-rays of her chest, put a breathing tube down her throat,"

Amy found Sheldon looking away, towards the twins' bedroom.

"They wrapped both with a turban around their heads and placed them in a clear acrylic incubator, I wasn't allowed to hold them, just lightly touch them," it was hard to tell Sheldon about this, "after three days of close monitoring Ryan was moved to the neonatal ward where I had to begin to breast feed him but because of the breathing tubes he didn't want to swallow, his throat was very sore and it took many tries for him to finally begin to feed," she sighed.

"Three days after Ryan, Marie was also moved to the neonatal ward and I had to start all over again," she paused to think about her next words, "It was hard Sheldon, although the doctors and nurses were supportive, everyone had doubts about whether or not they would make it and they had even bigger doubts about whether they would leave unscathed, especially Marie, it was the hardest time of my life because I thought that I was going to lose my last connection to you," she hadn't meant to say that last part.

Amy quickly turned her head to the side and avoided eye contact, Sheldon followed suit.

It wasn't until moments after that Sheldon spoke, "Amy, as much as I could possibly try to imagine what the situation may have been like, I can't possibly come close to what you have had to go through and I wanted you to know that I—" he was interrupted by a loud wail coming from the twins' room.

Amy stood quickly, "It's Tyler, he has night terrors,"

Sheldon followed Amy to the room and watched as Tyler thrashed around the bed, crying as he did so. Amy quickly sat down next to him and picked him up despite his sudden movements. He continued to cry and wriggle but she kept a tight hold on him.

As she passed Sheldon she motioned for him to follow her, he took one last look at Marie and saw that she was fast asleep. This reminded him of his sister, she used to sleep through many of her parents' fights, despite the shouting and the blaring of his Richard Feynman lectures.

He walked behind Amy to another bedroom. This one had a double bed in the middle of the left wall and two bedside tables on each side. In front of the bed was a long closet extending on about two thirds of the wall away from him. On his right was a small vanity and a door leading into a separate bathroom.

Amy lay Tyler on the bed and sat down next to him, softly running her hand over his hair. He was no longer crying but the odd jerk happened every once in a while. She wiped the remnants of his tears and looked over at Sheldon who was still standing by the door.

"Sheldon, you can come in if you like," she said.

At this, he took a couple of steps for award until he was standing beside Amy, looking at Tyler.

"Has it passed?" he asked.

"Yes, the episode usually lasts about two minutes," she said, keeping her gaze on her son, "When he has night terrors it can be very hard to comfort him because he doesn't know we're here, he's still asleep, just stuck between two types of sleep, REM and non-REM," she looked up at him, "In the morning he won't even remember,"

Sheldon nodded, this wasn't easy and as much as he was set on split custody he knew he needed the skills and expertise first.

Once Tyler had returned to normal, Amy took him back to the bed and softly pulled the door ajar. Both returned to the living room where Sheldon proceeded to look at his watch.

12:34am.

His eyes bulged at the numbers staring back at him.

"It appears that time has metaphorically flown," he said as she looked at her watch, "I should leave,"

As he moved to take his messenger bag, she spoke, "Wait, Sheldon, it's far too late to leave and I can't drive you because the twins are asleep and as you know the streets of Pasadena are filled with dark strangers and drunk criminals,"

He nodded, "I suppose you're right, what do you propose I do?"

"You could stay here," she said.

He thought for a while, "I suppose that's alright,"

After this Amy moved to get the couch ready.

As she was about to bid goodnight to Sheldon, he spoke again as she stood at the frame of the living room door, "Amy, what I wanted to say before was that I'm sorry you had to do this alone, but after much thought I want you to know that I would have returned because I loved you very much,"

Amy softened her gaze, nodding before saying goodnight and leaving to her room.

As she closed the door, she felt the exhaustion wash over her. This had been an eventful day, but she was happy she could move on from the past and try to give the twins everything they had missed out on.
