Sorry for the late update. But the final year of high school is a bitch. I'm sure anyone experiencing it would agree with me.
And…why does everyone think that the suture of Allie's stomach is related to a miscarriage? Seriously, though. Where do you guys get all these ideas from?! Is there a fountain I can go to or something?!
Blake, I saw you story suggestion on my Thunderbirds fanfic. I don't watch Doctor Who. Never have and never will. So I WON'T be writing Doctor Who fanfics anytime soon. However, my very dear friend Miss Daisy Dukes (who is also my editor) is SERIOUSLY obsessed with Doctor Who and I doubt she would say no if you asked her to write a Doctor Who fanfic for you. She has her anon reviews open the last time I checked. So you can ask her through her How to Train Your Dragon fanfic.
Also, this chapter has been unedited. Miss Daisy Dukes has had problems downloading the chapter to her computer. But she read it on her iPad (she can read it on there but not download or edit) and told me that it was good and I can upload it. So sorry if there are any mistakes that I missed!
Anyway, let's get on with it. The bridge scene is one of my favourite scenes in the movie.
ENJOY!
Despite me going for round two with the nurse from yesterday, the four of us managed to leave the hospital. The doctors were slightly reluctant to give us the all-clear. But we all proved that we were well enough to be discharged. Well, that and we're the only ones who know how to find Ben.
That's how we ended up in the taxi heading to Ben's apartment. Debbie would know where to find him. If she didn't, it was all but hopeless.
Reed, since he knew how to get to Ben's place better than the rest of us, was sitting in the front passenger seat near the cab driver to guide him if needed. Sue, Johnny and I filled the backseat. Because I am the smallest and shortest of the group, I had to sit in the middle.
I hate being squished. Especially when one of the people squishing me is my (not yet) ex-fiancé.
"Whoa!" I gasped in horror.
There was a massive traffic jam on the Brooklyn Bridge. All three lanes on the side of the bridge we were travelling on were closed. Crowds were filling the roads in the gaps left by the many cars.
The four of us glanced at each other, silently making the decision together and amicably. Sue paid the cabbie for getting us this far and we all disembarked.
"What happened?" I demanded.
"There's this monster on the bridge!" one person cried.
"We need to get to Ben," I stated.
"We're not gonna get past these people," Reed said, somewhat defeated before glancing at Sue, "But you could."
I immediately knew what Reed was suggesting. My suspicions were only confirmed when Sue closed her eyes and concentrated hard on becoming invisible.
"Sue," I whispered to her, "Your clothes."
"Lose them!" Reed hissed.
Sue looked down and saw that while her body had turned invisible, her clothes hadn't.
"Oh. Right."
Her jacket was first to go. Then her blouse. Johnny looked away. It is safe to assume that the sight of his sister undressing in the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge was a sight that he didn't want to see.
"This is so wrong," Johnny muttered.
If that was my younger half-brother doing this, I would be in the same position as Johnny.
Especially if he turned visible when trying to remove his underwear.
Sue was, at first, confused. Why were people staring at her? Why were women gasping in horror? Why were men gawking and some people laughing? Then she looked down and saw her situation. Immediately, she gasped in horror and tried to cover herself up. Not that it helped much.
"Wow. You've been working out," Reed observed.
"SHUT UP!" Sue snapped.
"OK. Nothing to see here!" I called as I took my jacket off to cover her up.
"Hey, sweetheart! Why don't you take your clothes off?!" I heard some jackass call to me.
"Why don't you keep your mouth shut before I shut it for you?!" Johnny called back to him.
"Calm down, Johnny," I warned him before noting the evaporating steam, "You're steaming."
"Got anymore great ideas?! Why don't you strip down and have a hundred people stare at you?!" Sue hissed at Reed, turning invisible in the process.
"Sue," Reed whispered.
"What?" Sue growled before looking down and seeing that she had turned invisible again, "Oh."
"I'm gonna need therapy," Johnny decreed, "Do you think…?"
"MD, Johnny. Not PhD," I reminded him before saying, "We should follow Sue."
Johnny picked up Sue's clothes and followed the path she was making in the crowd. Everyone was freaked out by the naked invisible woman. So they didn't hesitate to move out of the way.
Immediately, I helped Sue find an area where she could turn visible and put her clothes back on. When I noted her facial expression after she turned visible, I knew that she was still pissed.
"I still cannot believe you made me do that!" Sue whined to Reed as he came past, clearly undignified.
"We got through didn't we?" Reed retorted, "Just find Ben."
Reed then took off in another direction, desperate to find Ben. But it wasn't going to be that easy. Sue then got the idea to climb into the boot of a taxi that had crashed in the chaos, screaming his name.
When he appeared from behind the fruit truck, we were all horrified.
He wasn't the Ben we all knew and loved. Underneath, I hoped that that Ben was still there. But…the orange, big, gruff, rocklike creature standing before us wasn't Ben.
It was a misshapen form of Ben.
"Mum? Mum?"
Johnny and I were distracted by the sight of Ben by the sound of a child calling for her mother. Immediately, we noticed the gas tanks nearby that were about to explode and harm the little girl.
Then they exploded.
Johnny leapt into action, jumping over the cars and holding the little girl against his body with his back to the oncoming flames. Johnny was immune to fire. The girl wasn't.
The force of the blast sent me backwards into the taxi and I fell to the ground with my arms over my head. I was already feeling dizzy from the intense heat surrounding my body. But it didn't affect me as much as being in Johnny's arms on the mountains did. It wasn't hot enough to get me over 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Don't ask me why. Gas explosions tend to be pretty hot.
Eventually, the flames died down. I looked up and saw another form of trouble.
A fire truck was dangling dangerously over the bridge. There were two firemen dangling from the truck. One from the ladder. One from one of the ledges at the bottom of the truck. Reed and I noticed the action while Ben had grabbed the truck and was trying to pull it back to safety.
The fireman's grip slipped and he began falling towards the river.
I remembered from the incident at the hospital last night that I could manipulate water how I like to. So I pointed my hand towards the river and water rose up to meet the falling fireman. He landed on the tower of water as though he was about to lie on a couch.
"I got you!" I called down to him.
I raised him as close to the bridge as I could. From there, Reed stretched across and grabbed him, pulling him onto safety. The other fireman was able to climb up the ladder towards safety as Ben pulled the truck back onto the bridge as best he could.
Then police came and surrounded him with their guns pointing at him.
"This is the police. Get down on the ground," one officer ordered.
"Don't shoot! He's a hero!" I heard one woman objecting.
"Get down on the ground now!" the officer repeated his order.
Something that startled the officers was the bystanders that were cheering us on. The firemen were coming and forcing the officers to lower their weapons. We tried to run towards him. But we were blocked by officers.
"BEN!" Reed called, fighting his way through.
Ben went to turn towards us. But something had stopped him from coming towards us. Looking in the crowd, I knew who it was.
It was Debbie.
Ben went to approached her. But she shook her head and backed away, tears brimming her eyes. Ben stopped, watching in heartbreak as Debbie removed her engagement ring and left it on the ground before walking away. If Ben could cry, I think he would.
"HEY!" I called as I ran after her, despite Johnny's attempts to restrain me, "DEBBIE!"
"What do you want?" she spat.
Debbie and I had meet that time I visited Johnny in Houston not long after we had gotten engaged. From the beginning, I had a feeling something about Debbie was off. But I didn't say anything. Mainly because I saw how happy Ben was with her.
"How could you?" I said in disgust, "You and Ben promised you'd be together forever no matter what. Now that he's been injured in space, you're just going to walk away? When he needs you more than ever?!"
"That's not Ben!" she cried, "That's not my Ben! I don't know who he is anymore, Alena! The Ben I knew and the Ben I loved died on that space station! I cannot marry someone like him! You of all people should understand!"
She walked away. But this time, I didn't make any attempts to stop her. Ben didn't need someone like her in his life.
I walked back to the others. When I did, I saw that Reed was kneeling beside Ben, placing the discarded engagement ring in his hand. It was then that I heard him make a promise,
"I swear to you I will do everything in my power until there is not a breath left in me. You're gonna be Ben again!"
Ben saw me standing there for the first time since the whole incident on the bridge began. Immediately, I walked forward and placed a hand on his shoulder as my attempt to comfort him. Ben seemed to respond to me more than he did to Reed.
I think it was mainly because I know how he feels.
OK. That's done and dusted. I think I'm gonna enjoy writing next chapter. Let's say Johnny gets a little bit pissed.
*in Arnold Schwarznegger voice* Hasta la vista, baby.
