She wasn't sure which caught her attention first; the striking pink cover featuring the title Love Is Never Lost or the words that jumped out at her the moment she picked up the book and thumbed through the pages. But she was so engrossed in the sentiment (words that spoke of love between an unlikely couple who, each in their own experiences had long since given up on ever finding happiness), that a sudden collision jolted her from her dreamlike state.
She was so startled that she looked up to find herself staring into the most beautiful green eyes she'd ever seen. And the face that accompanied them was even more handsome than the drawing of the man on the cover of the book that had fallen to the floor with a soft thud. Mortified she felt her face turning red. "Oh my… are you all right? I'm terribly sorry!"
The man smiled. "I was about to ask you the same thing. Are you all right?"
"I-I'm fine, thank you. I'm so sorry for bumping into you like this! I wasn't paying attention, I suppose. I was so lost in this book that I just-."
He chuckled, a deep sound that made her heart flutter. "No problem. Must be some book."
"Yes… Yes, it is. Or at least I hope so. I know it's silly, reading romance books at my age, but I just can't help meself."
He smiled and nodded, bending down to pick up the book. "Nothing wrong with that. May I?"
Startled, she blinked at the question. "What? Oh… of course." She watched in a daze as he thumbed through the pages as though the words captured his attention as they had hers. "Wow… I can see why you like this so much. It seems to be quite romantic."
She blushed, feeling even sillier than before. "Well, I-."
"Why don't I buy this for you?"
"Oh, no… I couldn't! I-."
"It's the least I can do for almost knocking you over and interrupting your reading."
"But it was my fault!" She protested. "I'm the one-."
"Please?"
She sighed, unable to resist his charm. "Well, all right. Thank you." She followed him, floating on a cloud, toward the front of the small bookstore where he paid for her book and handed it to her in a brightly colored bag, emblazoned with the bookstore's logo. As the walked out of the store and into the night air, she shivered when she felt his hand on her back.
"Are you cold?"
She stopped and turned to him. "No, I just… I wish…"
"What do you wish? Anything your heart desires and it's yours."
She stared at him, suddenly aware of how handsome he was. His rugged features were unlike those of any man she'd ever seen and his eyes were the kind that she could easily get lost in; a beautiful shade of green that she could stare into for hours and-.
"Are you all right?"
"What? Oh, yes, I'm fine. I was just… I wish there was something I could do for you."
He looked at her thoughtfully, his hand on his chin. "Well, now that you mention it…"
Her breath caught in her throat. "Yes?"
"Have dinner with me? Please?"
She gasped in disbelief. When she made the decision to go to the bookstore that afternoon, she never dreamt that it would end up like this. "Yes, of course I'll have dinner with you." She replied without hesitation. "That would be lovely."
He smiled sincerely. "Great! I know this amazing place just right around the corner. Shall we?"
Her heart fluttered once more, as her dream was about to come true.
