The girls waited for the rest of the club to file out before starting on the table. "She can really cook huh" Lilly smiled at happy as she passed him to go to the kitchen. "Maybe she could teach you how to cook Fay? If you asked nicely"
"what are you trying to say about my cooking" Faith hooked one hand on her hip while balancing a stack of plates in the other, a trick she had learned at a restaurant that they had worked at not too long ago. The atmosphere seemed so much more relaxed than it had during the dinner, maybe it was the fact her and Lilly were the only ones left, apart from Happy who had left the room very quietly.
"What's his deal?" Lilly said nudging her chin towards the hallway where happy had excited.
"Huh? Who?"
"Fay. The guy who's head looks like a fucking reptile shop."
"Oh, I dunno, maybe he's jus-"
"Hey Happy!" Lilly cut in before Faith could finish talking about him. Neither of them had heard him come in making them both wonder how much of their conversation he had heard. Not that it would have mattered. They hadn't said anything that could cause a problem.
"Yeah?" He walked over to the girls who were now starting to wash down the bar.
"That was lovely food that Gemma made." It was all Lilly could think of and she hoped it would be enough to engage him in conversation or this was going to be a very awkward night.
"She's a good Mom."
"Do you not have an old lady Hap?" Lilly easily asked blinking up to the older man who had started to pour himself a drink. She smiled sweetly, even though she had guessed the answer she was hoping he had a wife somewhere and was happily in love.
"But she's with Nero right? The guy she came to the meal with. He's not Jax's dad and he's not a part of the club either. What's good about that?" Faith had stopped wiping, unable to contain herself. She hadn't meant any disrespect to Gemma, quit the opposite, she admired how she still managed to keep everything together despite her family being broke up into separate little pieces. Instead of looking at him, she took to staring at the spot she had been rubbing ever since he had entered. She could see her reflection as she realised she had stepped over the line. This was none of her business, she wasn't even that curious, it wasn't even something she gave a crap about, but here she was, asking anyway.
"Jax's dad died when he was young, His step father Clay died too." Faith had heard some of the bikers talk about Clay briefly. Something about deals he had made and how they had gone wrong. She had seen his picture up on the wall but couldn't quit place his face.
"Why did Tig call you Killer?"
"FAITH!" Lilly piped up staring wide eyed at her friend. She couldn't deny that she was a little scared of Happy. He hadn't said much and his facial reactions were minimal at best. But she knew that fear wasn't misplaced and the nickname just cemented her feelings towards him.
Happy grunted and downed his drink before speaking again
"Your old man got himself in trouble and will die. the people who tried to kill him are now after you. So now we gotta watch you. So shut up and do as you're told and stop asking questions!" His voice had gotten coarser and by the end he practically threw the words at Faith who felt them like a slap in the face.
"Wha-?" Lilly span looking at Happy's face hoping for an indication he was lying.
"Shh Lilly." – "What the fuck? What kind of trouble?" Faith could hear her voice rising into panic mode, not for Steve, but for her mother who she had left behind. "Look at me! What kind of trouble" She demanded slamming her hand on the bar next to where Happy had begun pouring another drink.
He stopped just as the whisky touched the top of the glass, calmly replaced the lid to the bottle, placed it down and turned to look at her. His eyes had gone from a dark brown to an oily black burning into her bright blue eyes.
"A real fucking mess." He downed the drink and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand still locked eyes. Neither of them backing down.
"You're a piece of shit. Lilly get our stuff."
"Fay did you not hear him?! We can't go! What if there are people out there trying to kill you!?"
"Lilly just get our bags!" Faith raised both hands to her head smoothing back her hair while her mind raced causing a raging headache. She now had to think logically.
"Don't you dare leave this room." Happy glared over at Lilly who had now begun to cry.
"Don't speak to her like that, she's not a dog."
Happy shrugged his shoulders regaining control over his temper. From what he could tell Faith didn't know anything about her step father or the business he was in, so she would be of little use to the club. There was no point in them staying around like strays. Taking out his phone he texted Jax the word 'nothing'.
"I don't know whats going on here Fay, but we'll figure it out in the morning. I need to go to sleep. You should too." Lilly stood, soothing Faiths hair tucking the fringe behind her ears.
"Yeah, I will soon. I'll see you in the morning." She didn't unfold her arms for the hug Lilly gave her but appreciated the gesture all the same.
Faith waited until Lilly left the bar to sit next to Happy. Neither of them said anything for an hour or so and she had taken to studying his tattoos on the arm closest to her. She had become less nervous around him since he told her the truth however wasn't sure how relaxed he was having her sit next to him so every now and again stretched out her legs and walked around the room to give him some space.
"You ever owned a snake?" she stood behind him stretching her arms out above her head one by one looking at his head and the way the snakes curled around the top. No verbal answer, just a slight shake of his head. After another hour she decided it was time for some sleep, rising to walk down the corridor to Opie's bedroom. She heard Happy grunt as he also stood. He followed her down the corridor waiting as Faith checked Juice's room to make sure Lilly was asleep.
Reaching her room she felt her eyelids grow heavier than expected. It was now 4am and the sun would be up soon.
"mornin' girls" Jax had gathered the club together by the bar and had sent Tig to wake both Lilly and Faith up. As they walked in bleary eyed Juice had tried to hold in his proud smile at Lilly who wore one of his old t-shirts he had forgotten to take home to wash. She settled in to his side not quite awake.
"We need answers. Have you spoken to your old man since coming here?"
"For fuck sake. No." she was slightly pissed off to have been woken up. Especially by Tig who had dragged her sleeping body out of bed by her foot. And was even more pissed off that it was about her step dad who had gotten her into a mess she didn't know how to fix.
"Faith, we gotta know the truth. This shit has come down on the whole club. And your old man has gone. We gotta get in front of this before it blows up"
"She doesn't know anything." All eyes went to Happy who stood at the back of the crowd leaning against a wall with a blunt hanging off the corner of his mouth.
Faith raised her eyebrows at Jax who had been silenced by Happy's input.
"Look Jax, I know you gotta do what you gotta do, but honestly I couldn't give a shit. I need to know my mother is okay before I do anything else."
"your mom's fine darlin', she's worried about you" Gemma pursed her lips, putting one hand to her hip.
"you've spoken to my mum? Why?"
"she was very concerned that you hadn't called her in a month. She thought you'd been killed. I told her you've been with us the whole time. Your welcome"
"you didn't need to do that. I was gonna call, I just…"
"so what's gonna happen now Jax? As soon as the Irish finds out about this everyone's gonna want Steve dead" Tig was at Jax's side looking over to Lilly then Faith, both he hoped he wouldn't have to kill in the future.
"What did he do?"
"you don't need to know baby" Faith knew Tig only wanted to protect them from knowing the truth. And maybe keep Faith's memories of her stepdad fond however she couldn't care less. Her dad hadn't been around at all, in fact she couldn't remember a time when he was there for her, and Steve had almost been the same. Except when he was around he loved her mother and that was enough. Her mother had no idea how to talk to Faith especially about the long midnight walks to god knows where and the drinking, but Steve had calmed her down and taken her mind off of things. Which allowed Faith to do what she wanted without feeling bad on her mother. Her mother was the only person who knew her inside and out, yet still didn't really know to communicate with her.
"I need to know. I don't care what he's done. It affects me, so I need to know."
"Your old man snitched. To everyone, to the cops, the Myans…he told them stuff he shouldn't have for money, and then ripped off the people who paid him, took everything and ran. I'm sorry kid, but Rats tend to get themselves killed."
"If that's all, why would they come after me? I don't have their stuff."
"You'll make good ransom. Your Brothers a Vegetable and your mother is protected by our charter in England. It's smaller, they couldn't watch all of you and you had plans to come here anyway."
Faith took a sharp intake of breathe at the mention of her brother. What if he wakes up and wonders where she is? What if he doesn't understand she has to be here?
"So the people he pissed off are where?"
"There here."
"I'm done." Faith raised her hands. Enough information for the day. All she wanted was to go for a walk but knew that might not be the safest bet, and she wasn't in the mood for company.
"Hey Lilly, Wanna go?" Juice produced a spare motorcycle helmet from behind the bar making the other guys laugh. Lilly's eyes lit up as she took the gift with both hands squealing in happiness. She had listened to him for hours describing how much he loved being on his bike and she was finally going to join him.
"Yeah! uhm Fay you don't mind do you?" Lilly spun around mouthing dramatically the words 'O MY GOD' to Faith who felt butterflies for her friend.
"No, go!" she winked at Lilly who was already almost to the door and waving goodbye.
"tigger? What do I do now?" Faith looked up at Tig who looked shocked to be asked such a question. Hell he didn't have the answer, his life was beyond fucked up and now someone wanted advice. Little Faith who looked like an injured bird.
"I, I don't know kid."
"you stay alive" Gemma walked forward presenting Faith with a gun she had dug out from her bag.
"Christ! Put that thing away!" Faith pushed Gemma's hands away from her putting distance between her and the gun. Those things are dangerous. People died cleaning the bloody things.
"sweetheart, those guys have more guns than you have brain cells. Take the gun and use it." Gemma placed the gun on the bar and left before Faith could argue. She didn't want to piss anyone off, if Gemma's carrying, chances are they all were, but she didn't want the gun either.
"back to work guys, cars gotta get out by tomorrow, we got a delivery." Jax called the group who all started to move towards the door. Faith thought the mechanic aspect was just a rouse, a bunch of hired guys to look like they were fixing cars while the real operations were going down, but saw over the last couple of days they were all mechanics. Actually fixing cars. People from the town would bring their cars in and depending on who they were, would get a good price on repairs.
Faith wasn't sure what to do with the rest of her day and didn't fancy sleeping yet so decided to follow the boys, maybe they'd let her work on a car, it had been ages.
" Stupid bitch."
Faith spun around to see a group of barely dressed girls glairing over at her and whispering.
"excuse me?"
"you heard me!" The woman must have been in her early thirties, dressed as though she was a teenager. "you don't belong here. fuck off back to your dead family."
Faith was slightly taken aback by this woman. She had never seen her before and didn't know what she had done to deserve such an insult. But she wasn't just gonna let it go.
"what's your problem!?"
"you!. Who do you think you are!? Show some fucking respect whore."
What the fuck. Faith was very close to losing her cool and had taken several steps towards the girls who had come in front of the bar looking for a fight. She wasn't used to stooping to pathetic girls levels but felt if she backed down now the guys would see her as weak. She hadn't seen them come back into the room and jumped as Gemma's hand crashed into the mouthy woman's cheek.
