Logan stood outside the small house, it was a little past midnight and the moon hung low a soft glow settling on the quiet neighborhood. He watched as a light switched on and the movement in the house. The night before they had been to the party together and after she had stormed off he had left her alone, given her space to cool down. He hadn't went looking for her, because he didn't want to upset her more.
When an hour or so had passed and Betty had come to him looking for her, he went searching for her also. She had been nowhere to be found like she had disappeared into thin air. Finally Betty told him she had come with Matt, and he also was nowhere to be found. He had been livid then, leaving the party and speeding off to Matt's house.
He had sat there for hours staking out watching the house with no sign of anyone. He skipped work and as much as he wanted to sit there till she shown her face, he had left to get something to eat returning less than an hour later to see Matt's car in the driveway.
Logan made his way to the front door, as composed as he could be in a situation like this. He really had no clue why she had left, with Matt of all people. They had been doing well on the island, maybe she ha been angry he had forced her to accompany him to the party. He wasn't sure but he was going to find out and bring her home if it was the last thing he did.
He knocked on the door rather loudly, the sound harsh in the silent night sky.
He could hear rushed yet quiet movements inside and he knocked again. "Open the fucking door I know ya in there."
He banged on the door again waiting for an answer, finally a half asleep Matt appeared at the door. Logan glanced around him into the barely lit room, "Where is she." Logan pushed past him into the house.
"I don't know what you are talking about, and you're trespassing by the way. Get out of my house."
Logan paid him not attention as he pushed past him and into the kitchen, then through another closed door.
"If you don't leave now I'll call the cops Logan."
"I'm not leaving until you tell me where she is." He turned to him, a scowl on his face his hands crossed.
"I already told you I don't know who you are talking about." Matt stood his ground, even though inside he was shaking, he hadn't forgotten the beating he had taken from Logan's hands, but just knowing Emily had chosen to come with him of her own free will made him smug. It didn't matter the baby wasn't his, the only thing that mattered was she wasn't with Logan.
"Cut the bullshit bub, she's here, hand her over and I won't beat the shit out of ya." Logan stared him down, he wasn't leaving if he had to knock him out he would, Ororo was there he knew it. "Where is she?"
The scruff familiar voice made her shrink back into the tiny closet, Logan was there, sooner than she thought he would have been.
"Who are you talking about?" Matts feigned innocence, staring at Logan. He wanted to laugh in his face, gloat that Emily had chosen to come away with him.
"Don't play dumb with me I know she's here, where the fuck ya hiding her." Logan's voice rose with each word.
"I told you already I haven't see her. Maybe she's back on your little island waiting patiently for you like you wish." Matt smirked then, he couldn't help rubbing it in.
Ororo listened to their conversation, fear coursing through her veins, he was going to find her. And drag her back to the island, and this time he wasn't going to let her go so easy. He probably would keep her chained up until she gave birth, what was wrong with him, why couldn't he leave her alone…
Logan's eyed narrowed and before he knew it, Matt laid sprawled on the floor a right hook to the jaw knocking him on his ass.
She jumped her hand going to her mouth to squelch the gasp, at the loud thud. She was afraid what Logan had done to matt, she could hear the scuffle, then silence. She stood shakily to her feet, she couldn't let this happen, Matt was only trying to help and now God knows what Logan was doing to him, she reached for the doorknob slowly, stepping out into the dark room. The floor creaked and she halted. Tentively listening for any sound down stairs, she made her way slowly to the stairs, her eyes widen as she watched Logan hold matt up by his shirt, his face badly beaten….
A loud knock at the door made her jump, Logan turned to look at her, throwing Matt onto the floor like a rag doll. He took a step towards her and she stood there stunned for a moment. Another resounding knock at the door and Ororo bolted for it, swinging it open.
"What's going on in here?"
Ororo held onto the door for support catching her breath.
"Are you ok Ma'am?" The cop helped her up as he surveyed the room. His eyes landing on Logan's heaving sweaty body, then the one on the floor.
"I…I'm fine. Just…"
The cop drew his gun and pointed it towards Logan as he called in for an ambulance.
"What is going on here sir?" His question pointed towards the only person seemly coherent enough to speak.
Logan shrugged, his eyes on the wilted woman in front of him. Her head was down and she looked sick as if she would fall at any moment, he mentally cursed himself for just barging in without actually thinking, He glanced down at Matt, wondering at what point he had called the police.
"Put your hands up, you are under arrest."
Logan did as he was told his eyes never leaving Ororo, she looked at him, and he could see the fear in her eyes as she held her stomach.
As they escorted Logan out Ororo watched him, unsure of what would happen to him, she couldn't avert her eyes from his, he said something to her but she didn't hear, just seen his lips move as he disappeared out of the door.
The second officer checked her for any bruising as she assured him she was ok, she hadn't been involved in the struggle.
~an hour later~
Ororo sat on the couch phone in hand. They had took Matt to the hospital and after five minutes of convincing them she was ok, they had left her. She was torn up inside her mind on Logan and Matt. She had to get away from this situation, at least until her son was born.
"Hello." She said hesitantly as the line was picked up, "Mr. Howlett?"
"Yes?"
"It's me Ororo Munroe we met at the party the other night…the pregnant…"
"Oh, Ororo how are you doing my dear is everything alright?"
"Yes…no." she was silent for a second, thinking of how to word her request, "I need to get away from here, but I. I don't have the money…"
"Where are you? I'll send someone for you right away."
Ororo sighed in relief she had been right to keep his card, she conveyed the address and hung up after thanking him. Thirty minutes later the knock on the door awoke her from her brief nap.
She stood, picking up the only luggage she had and opened the door. She was surprised it was James himself standing there. He took her bags and escorted her to the car.
~ A few hours later~
It was five am and she laid in bed, after explaining her situation to James he had been sympathetic offering her a room in his impressive mansion until he could get something arranged out for her.
She stared into the dark room she was tired but she couldn't fall asleep, she was worried, more like scared. The way Logan had acted earlier was a side of him she had never seen before. Never had she seen that kind of carnage from him, yes he had been boorish, callous maybe but she had never seen him that intense before. He was the man she was in love with, the father of her unborn son, but seeing him act like that, had frightened her. The once lovable albeit insensitive guy she had fallen for on the island had turned into someone she didn't know. He no longer seemed like a protector but a destroyer.
She turned in bed, feeling sorry for Matt. She had gotten him into that situation she should have never left with him. Logan wouldn't have assaulted him if she hadn't been in his house. She sighed pulling the sheet over her head how did things get so messed up. Maybe she should have just stayed with Logan instead of running off with Matt, none of this would have happened, Logan wouldn't be in jail, and Matt wouldn't be in the hospital.
She had called him earlier and he had sounded ok, she had apologized profusely for what happened, yet he still had said it was ok, it wasn't her fault. He just wanted to protect her from that mad man. She thanked him and told him about her plans to go away for a while and he had wanted to accompany her but she couldn't let that happened, it hurt her enough knowing that because of her he had been beaten up.
She got out of bed giving up on sleep and going downstairs to eat something.
"You're up early."
Ororo turned just noticing James, "I couldn't sleep so figured I would get something to eat, maybe that will put me to bed." She went to the fridge and rummaged through it taking out the making of a sandwich.
"I'm off to work but if you need anything, call me I'll get it taken care of for you."
She nodded and then turned to him, "Can I ask you something James?"
"Yes, what is on your mind Ororo?"
"The other night it seemed liked something was off between you and Logan, I understand if you don't want to talk about it but I would like to know."
"Logan has some misconceptions about something that happened when he was younger, he refuses to listen to me." He shrugged, "Sooner or later he will get over it."
Ororo sat back pensively, James didn't seem to want to delve into it anymore, but she wondered what had happened between them.
"I will see you later Ororo, remember call me."
Again she nodded and he left. She sat and ate her sandwich quietly not really feeling hungry. She went upstairs to take a bath and wash away the whole night away. She sighed as she stood up in the bathtub, she reached for the towel afraid of messing up the beautiful rug next to it. She frowned, as she stretched farther trying to reach it. She took one step out shakily her leg caught on the rim of the tub and she slipped…
Bright lights and the smell of sanitizer assailed her. She sat up slowly, her stomach in knots. She took a few seconds to realize she was in a hospital room. She glanced around, the big room, flowers on each table with some food. She reached for it and began to eat. What was she doing here?
"Your awake, Emily good you've eaten." Ororo glanced up Hank's face coming into view.
"What am I doing here? Where am I?"
"A young lady called and I had them rush you to this hospital. You and your baby are fine. The fall didn't hurt the baby, and just a few superficial bruises for you though."
"What I don't understand."
"The lady found you passed out and I had you brought I to make sure that your son was fine. I will be keeping you overnight and you will be free to go tomorrow." He said it slowly, realizing she had just woke up she probably wasn't comprehending what he had been saying.
"Yes but what hospital is this and in what county?"
"St. Mary's in Richmond ms Monroe."
Ororo sighed in relief, a twenty minute drive and she would be home. She only hoped Logan did not know she was here. She couldn't be near him anymore, she couldn't let her baby near him. He wasn't father material at all, kidnapping, fighting going to jail. She had said it before, she wouldn't let her feelings affect her baby that included how she felt about Logan, it mattered not that her heart belonged to Logan and she knew no one else would be able to fill that spot.
Logan was dangerous, not only to her but to her son. She couldn't squelch the fear of him taking her son. If something happened and it came down to it he would win in a custody battle, she knew it. He was rich he had the money to throw at the best lawyers and if he wanted he could easily take her son. even if it wasn't through the courts why wouldn't he scoop him away as he had done with her? He had the resources that if he wanted the two of them could disappear and she would never see her baby again.
"Hank, when will it be possible to get a DNA test done?"
He glanced at her chart and thought for a second, "If you have all the parties I could have it done tonight but we would need a sample from each one. When you have that it can be performed."
"Like a strand of hair?"
Ororo glanced around hoping to see her purse, she had thought of taking the test before, but Logan had whisked her off to the island before she had been able to. She had wanted to take the test without letting them know so she could find the perfect time to tell each one what the results had been. "Can you hand me my purse please." Hank handed it to her and she went through it finding what she had been searching for, "Here they are marked and you can get my baby's take what you need Hank and let me know the results as soon as you can."
Hank nodded and left, he would be back in a bit with the necessary instruments to take a sample from her unborn child. Ororo laid back staring at the ceiling, she was going to do it, and she had to be strong for herself and her baby.
- A few Days later-
Ororo sat shocked. Hank had just given her the results of the test. The father of her unborn baby was not Logan…
She read and reread it again to make sure her eyes had not been playing tricks on her. The result were as clear as day, Matt was the father of her unborn child. She wasn't quite sure how that was possible Logan had admitted to sleeping with her the night of the party. That would have been the only time that it could have happened between her and Matt. She sighed Matt had been telling the truth and Logan had lied to her. He had said he was the father and almost had her persuaded he was. She had spent months locked away with him, thinking he was the father, but she had been wrong.
She thanked Hank quietly and left. She sat in the back of James driven car and watched the streets pass by. How was she going to tell Logan? She had no clue where he was if he was still in Jail or not. He hadn't made any attempt to contact her and she refused to reach out to him. She didn't want to talk to him, but sooner or later she would have to. She didn't know how she would tell him that after all they had been through, he wasn't the father after all. She looked down at her stomach it didn't matter how she felt about Logan. She would have to push it aside so her son could grow up in a two parent home.
The door to her room slid open quietly to the empty darkness. She took off her jacket and set down her purse finding the light switch. The room brightened and she jumped, as a hand clamped over her mouth.
"Thought ya could hide from me Darlin'?"
Ororo stopped struggling against him, why didn't she think he would find her? This was Logan she was talking about, he was smart as a fox and never gave up, so why was she surprised? "Logan..."
"Why did ya leave?" He stepped away from her a frown on his lips.
"Why wouldn't I?" She took a seat off her tired feet, "I couldn't stand being cooped up there any longer Logan. Matt offered me a way out and I took it."
"So you chose to go with him?" his frown deepened.
"Yes. I already told you this Logan, going around in circles is not going to alter it." Now it was her turn to probe him, "What are you doing here? I thought you would be in jail."
"I was." He nodded, an almost satisfied smirk across his face as he thought about how he had left Matt.
Ororo shook her head, "Throw a little money around and you are out free right?"
"Yes." A simple statement that said volumes.
"Money is not everything Logan, you think because you have it you can do whatever you so please. You beat up a poor defenseless man for what Logan? He did nothing, I chose to go with him." She took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. " your arrogance, your stupidity that had always been your flaw, you thought you could get whatever you wanted because you had money, or you were the best at something, your wrong Logan you can't play with people's lives, you can't play with their emotions…" she sobbed suddenly.
He said nothing for a while watching as she wept "Get ya stuff I'm taking ya home."
"No. I am not going" she stood then, "Your father has been kind enough to let me stay here, whatever you are worried about I am safe here. I am not going back with you Logan."
"My father," he spat the words out with disgust, "You would rather be anywhere but with me, is that what you're saying?" He stuck his hands in his pocket and stepped away from her.
"With you and locked away like some untouchable priceless vase is two totally different things Logan. I am a grown woman, I have my own mind, my own wants. I do not need you to dictate the way I live. I was perfectly happy, living in my small home, working nine to five. I didn't need you to come back into my life and fuck everything up. I was happy and then you walked back into my life and screwed everything up." Her body shook as emotions finally found spoken word. She turned her back to him, rubbing at her eyes. "Why can you not see how you are hurting me Logan?" she hunched over with each sob
He watched her wanting to console her, wanted to take her into his arms, but he just stood there and watched her, what could he say to her? That he didn't mean to hurt her, he just wanted her to be his…he wanted it to be them, he wanted to raise their son and live happily ever after? He didn't know how to convey those thoughts into words, he never had to. It had always been the other way around, woman throwing themselves at him, confessing love to him.
Her back still turned to him, she heaved a heavy sigh "I need to tell you something. "She looked down at her stomach and rubbed it gently, "I had the d.n.a test done Logan…"
"What was the point we already know I'm the father."
"No you're not, Matt is the father Logan."
Logan stared at her his eyes narrowing, "stop fucking lying Ro, aint no way in hell that slimy bastard is the father, and ya didn't even sleep with him."
His anger was palpable in the room, she didn't expect any less though, she went through her purse fishing out the paper and handing it to him. She watched the emotions flitter across his face.
"I...I don't know what happened Logan but Matt is the father I'm…sorry…"
"Save it, cause ya aint. You've been fighting me from the moment we met." he ran his hand through his unruly hair ," I don't know how the hell ya did it Ro, but that kid is mine you and I both know, whatever ya trying to pull aint gonna work Darlin."
"What are you saying Logan, that somehow I rigged the test? You have got to be kidding me. I would not do that I was just as surprised as you were Logan."
He stared her down for a few moments. She wasn't the kind of girl to do that, she might have been mad at him but she wasn't the type to be so devious or pull crap for revenge. He sighed sitting down, the reality of the situation taking his breath away. He had been sure that the baby was his, he hadn't cared at first, but after seeing him on the ultrasound it had made him realize that this was a gift, something to be cherished by both of them.
He didn't know what to do now, he could have kept her if the baby had been his but now she had no ties to him, as she had said before a night of sex didn't tether her to him either way. He stood and left without saying anything else. He had to clear his mind, think this through. He loved her, but did he love her enough to raise another man's kid with her? True he had fallen for her a long time ago but he had wanted her body then, wanted her to want him as much as he did. She had been the only girl he had ever thought himself in love with.
In the seven years since their first meeting, he had yet to find another that made him feel like this, made him want her so bad his body ached. No other had made him feel as if living without her would be a hell he had to face each and every day she was not with him… He slammed the car door behind him he needed to think.
Ororo sighed as she watched the car lights fade into the darkness of the night's sky. This was a mess, her life was a mess…
A/N: Sooo that's was the chapter let me know what you think, again sorry for the late update
