Ch 2

Shakespeare code and new friends

The next morning

The Doctor turns a wheeled control while Martha holds on to the console to remain steady, Alex had yet to wake up. The Doctor hadn't had the hearts to wake her up when he found her sleeping in the library but she would soon wake up thanks to the shaking.

"But how do you travel in time? What makes it go?" Martha asked

"Oh, let's take the fun and mystery out of everything. Martha, you don't wanna know. It just does. Hold on tight!" The Doctor said

He practically climbs onto the console. Martha is knocked to the floor and the Doctor falls off the console, Alex who had woken up and was trying but failing big time to get to the control room standing, comes flying and lands on the Doctor.

"Good Morning young lady," He said and helped Alex up.

"Good Morning Doctor, Martha," Alex said smiling "Sorry."

"Good morning to you too Alex," Martha said and stood up "Blimey! Do you have to pass a test to fly this thing?"

"Yes, and I failed it," the Doctor said and grabs his coat "Now, make the most of it."

And with that he hands her jacket to her and run to the door.

"We promised you one trip and one trip only. Outside this door..." He said and stops at door and faces Martha and Alex

"Brave new world," Alex said exiting

"Where are we?" Martha asked

"Take a look," the Doctor said and opens door "After you."

Martha and Alex walk outside and onto an Elizabethan street at night with people milling about.

"This is soo cool," Alex said and hugged the Doctor "Thanks."

The Doctor smile happy that Alex like it he looked at Martha and saw that she was totally amazed out and both Alex and the Doctor couldn't help but smile at her face.

"Oh, you are kidding me. You are so kidding me. Oh, my God! We did it. We travelled in time. Where are we?" She asked "No, sorry. I gotta get used to this whole new language. When are we?"

The Doctor looks up and pulls Martha back as from a first floor window and man dumps the contents of a bucket.

"Mind the loo!" the man screamed after had tossed it out

Alex couldn't help but giggle a bit at that but stopped when the Doctor looked sternly at her.

"Somewhere before the invention of the toilet. Sorry about that," She said

"I've seen worse. I've worked the late night shift at A&E," Martha said

The Doctor starts to walk away.

"But are we safe? I mean, can we move around and stuff?" She asked

"Of course we can. Why do you ask?" the Doctor asked

"It's like in the films. You step on a butterfly; you change the future of the human race," Martha said

"Well, tell you what then, don't step on any butterflies," Alex said and you could see she thought Martha was being silly. "What have butterflies ever done to you?"

They continue walking.

"What if, I dunno, what if I kill my grandfather?" Martha said

"You planning to?" the Doctor asked

"No," Martha said

"Well, then," he said "Alex, Do not run of! Do you hear me young lady!"

Alex had been walking a bit ahead of the Doctor and Martha.

"Okay, I am not going to run off!" Alex called back from the few feet she was ahead of them.

But did come walking back to them when the Doctor waved her back. Alex smiled a bit and took the Doctor's hand.

She felt safe holding on to him because even if she didn't want to admit it but getting lost did scared her a bit and holding on to the Doctor made her also feel like she use to feel with her father, totally safe.

"This is London," Martha said

"I think so. Right about 1599,"the Doctor said and looked around.

"Oh, but hold on. Am I all right? I'm not gonna get carted off as a slave, am I?" Martha said

"Why would they do that?" He asked

"Not exactly white, in case you haven't noticed," Martha said and held up her hand.

"We not even human. Just walk about like you own the place. Works for me. Besides, you'd be surprised. Elizabethan England, not so different from your time. Look over there," the Doctor said and points "They've got recycling."

A man shovels manure in to a bucket.

"Water cooler moment" Alex said and pointed at two men conversing at a water barrel. They walk past a man preaching about the end of the world.

"... and the world will be consumed by flame!" a preacher screamed out

"Global warming. Oh, yes, and... entertainment! Popular entertainment for the masses. If I'm right, we're just down the river by Southwark right next to..." the Doctor said and takes Martha's hand and they run around a corner "Oh, yes, the Globe Theatre! Brand new. Just opened. Through, strictly speaking, it's not a globe; it's a tetradecagon 14 sides containing the man himself."

"Whoa, you don't mean... is Shakespeare in there?" Martha asked looking at the Doctor and Alex who both were swing on their ball of their feet.

"Oh, yes." they said and the Doctor held out his arms "Miss Jones and young Miss Alex, will you accompany me to the theatre?"

"Yes, Mr Smith, I will," Martha said and linked her arm with his

Alex was just about to link her arm with the Doctor's when she heard a whimper from one of the alley; something made her want to see what the whimper was, she felt that something was really wrong and that someone needed her help, she was just about to walk toward the alley.

"When you get home, you can tell everyone you've seen Shakespeare," the Doctor said and turned to look at Alex "Alex where are you going?"

"Doctor I heard something," She said to the Doctor "I am just going to check on it okay? You can go I will came later okay?"

"Then I could get sectioned!" Martha said she had not notice anything she was just so focus on Shakespeare.

"Alex wait we will go together I don't want you to get lost here okay." The Doctor said "Martha come, something is happening in that alley."

Martha nod and follow the other two in to the dark alley where they found three young boys throwing stones at a young rather big dirty dog.

Alex saw red and before neither the Doctor or Martha could react had she rush forward and kicked one of the boys in the back so that the poor bloke flew in to one of the other boys and both of them fell down, the last boy turn around and jump Alex and started to punch her, sadly for the boy he didn't know two things one the person he tried to beat up was a girl and two that the girl's father watch it happened.

The Doctor stood still for about a second before he rushes to Alex's side and more or less dragged the boy of her.

"You three get out of here before I make you feel the same pain as you gave the poor dog and this girl," the Doctor hissed to them while helping Alex up "Martha please take a look at the dog while I look at Alex."

The three boys found that the Doctor was more scary then anything and run of as if the devil was at their tails.

Alex spit out some blood and wiped some of the blood that was running down her nose, she didn't dare look at the Doctor in fear that he was mad at her.
"Alexandria, look at me young lady," the Doctor said sternly

"Am sorry Doctor, but they were so mean to the poor dear," Alex said and looked up at the Doctor. "I just had to help it."

"I know Alex but violence is never the answer," the Doctor said but could help but smiling "Stand still I will see if I can fix it."

He scans her with the sonic screwdriver and soon was the blood gone and the injuries too.

The Doctor couldn't stop thinking that Alex was so alike Rose, He knows that Rose would have done the same thing if she had been there.

"Thanks," Alex said and hugged the Doctor tight who hugged her back.

Martha had check the dog and found out that apart from some bruising it was perfectly fine and happy male dog, big as a full grown mini pony.

"He is fine," She said to Alex and the Doctor

"Good, can I keep him?" Alex asked when the dog started to lick her face and the Doctor's like it was saying thanks to them.

"Let me think about it," the Doctor said he did like the dog but a dog in the TARDIS? That would not work or?

The Dog barked a happy bark when Alex hugged him.

"So let's visit the theatre," the Doctor said "Or anymore dogs that need to be saved?"

"Nope Shakespeare would be fun now," Alex said and took the Doctor's hand Martha was not late to follow her and linked her arm with the Doctor's other arm.

And off they went with the dog after them or more the dog walk beside Alex's side like he was glued to her.

Inside the theatre after the show

Packed house, everyone applauding and cheering. Actors onstage taking their bows.

"That's amazing! Just amazing. It's worth putting up with the smell. And those are men dressed as women, yeah," Martha said amazed

"Yes it was, right Golem," Alex said to the dog at her feet that wagged his tail when he heard his name.

"London never changes," the Doctor said "Golem?"

"Yeah I thought it was a good name for a dog," She said

"Where's Shakespeare? I wanna see Shakespeare," Martha said

She started to chants with her fist in air "Author! Author!"

The Doctor and Alex looks at her.

"Do people shout that? Do they shout "Author"?" Martha asked

Man in crowd by Martha picks up the chant and it soon spreads.

"Well... they do now," Alex said and looked around

Shakespeare comes out and takes an exaggerated bow and blows kisses. Audience goes wild and cheers even louder.

"He's a bit different from his portraits," Martha said

A girl known as Lilith sits alone in a box dressed in court finery. She removes a small doll from a pouch.

"Genius. He's a genius THE genius. The most human Human that's ever been. Now we're gonna hear him speak. Always, he chooses the best words. New, beautiful, brilliant words," the Doctor said and Alex couldn't help but smile at how the Doctor was acting.

"Shut your big fat mouths!" Shakespeare said

The audience laughs.

"Oh, well," the Doctor said disappointed

"You should never meet your heroes," Martha said

Alex nod and laughed a bit she thought that Shakespeare was funny.

"You have excellent taste! I'll give you that," Shakespeare said and points to man in audience "Oh, that's a wig!"

Lilith, who's watching on a balcony, twirls her hand about the tuft of hair on the doll.

"Wind the craft of ancient harm. The time approaches for our charm." She whisper to the doll

"I know what you're all saying. 'Loves Labour's Lost', that's a funny ending, isn't it? It just stops! Will the boys get the girls?" Shakespeare said "Well, don't get your hose in a tangle, you'll find out soon. Yeah, yeah. All in good time. You don't rush a genius."

He bows. Lilith kisses the doll and Shakespeare jerks upright.

"When? Tomorrow night!" he said loudly

Audience cheers and the girl are pleased while the cast is stunned.

"The premiere of my brand new play. A sequel, no less, and I call it 'Loves Labour's Won'!" Shakespeare said

Audience applauds loudly and the Doctor remains quiet, Martha soon joins in with the applauds while Alex and Golem just say quiet watching the Doctor.

The Doctor, Alex with her dog and Martha leave the theatre with the rest of the crowd.

"I'm not an expert, but I've never heard of 'Loves Labour's Won'," Martha said

"Exactly the lost play. It doesn't exist only in rumours," the Doctor said "It's mentioned in lists of his plays but never ever turns up. No one knows why."

"Have you got a mini-disk or something? We could tape it. We can flog it. Sell it when we get home and make a mint," Martha said

"No," Alex and the Doctor said together while looking at her sternly.

"That would be bad?" Martha asked

"Yeah. Yeah," the Doctor said

"It would be very bad," Alex said like it was the most obviously thing in the world, Golem bark as if he agreed with Alex.

Alex looked down at Golem and smiled a big silly smile; she had already got attached to the big fluffy bear dog and the dog had clearly grown just as attached to her as she had to him.

"Well, how come it disappeared in the first place?" Martha asked trying to not take any offence by Alex

"Well, I was just gonna give you a quick little trip in the TARDIS but I suppose we could stay a bit longer," the Doctor said and walk toward the direction where Shakespeare was going.

The street outside the Elephant Inn, the windows was lit up.

"Here ya go, Will. Drink up. There's enough beer in this lodgings house to sink the Spanish," a woman called Dolly said

She doles out tankards to three men at the table.

"Dolly Bailey, you've saved my life," Shakespeare said

"I'll do more than that later tonight," Dolly said flirting before turning to one of the maids "And you, girl, hurry up with your tasks. The talk of gentlemen is best not overheard."

"Yes, ma'am. Sorry, ma'am," Lilith said as she was the maid.

"You must be mad, Will. 'Loves Labour's Won'? We're not ready. It's supposed to be next week. What made you say that?" a guy called Dick said

"You haven't even finished it yet," Another guy called Kempe said

"I've just got the final scene to go. You'll get it by morning," the bard himself said and drank his beer.

"Hello!" the Doctor said and knocked on the open door "Excuse me! I'm not interrupting, am I? Mr. Shakespeare, isn't it?"

"Oh no, no, no, no. Who let you in? No autographs. No, you can't have yourself sketched with me. And please don't ask where I get my ideas from. Thanks for the interest. Now be a good boy and shove…" Shakespeare said but stops when he sees Martha standing behind the Doctor "Hey, nonny nonny. Sit right down here next to me."

Shakespeare turned to Dick and Kempe

"You two get sewing on them costumes. Off you go," he said and wave them away

"Come on, lads. I think our William's found his new muse," Dolly said and waved Dick and Kempe out of the room.

Just as the two guys walk out Alex and Golem come running in nearly crashing with the table.

"Sorry Golem had to ehh you are Shakespeare," Alex said Shakespeare looked like he thought that Alex was just another fan. "You totally rock."

Shakespeare looked at Alex weirdly who just grin madly at him just as the Doctor was grinning. Shakespeare just shake his head and turn to Martha again.

"Sweet lady," Shakespeare said and sign for Martha to sit down at the table "Such unusual clothes. So... fitted."

"Um, verily, forsooth, egads," Martha said trying and failing to sound like she was from the late 1500

"No, no, don't do that. Don't," the Doctor said and held out psychic paper to Shakespeare "I'm Sir Doctor of TARDIS and this is my Apprentice Lady Alexandria of TARDIS and our companion, Miss Martha Jones."

"Interesting, that bit of paper. It's blank," the bard said

"Oh, that's... very clever. That proves it," the Doctor said impressed "Absolute genius."

"No, it says so right there. Sir Doctor, Lady Alexandria and Martha Jones. It says so," Martha said and peers at paper

"And I say it's blank," Shakespeare said

"Psychic paper. Um, long story. Oh, I hate starting from scratch," the Doctor said to Martha and put the psychic paper away.

"Psychic. Never heard that before and words are my trade. Who are you exactly?" Shakespeare asked "More's the point, who is your delicious blackamoor lady?"

"What did you say?" Martha asked

"Oops. Isn't that a word we use nowadays? An Ethiop girl? A swarth? A Queen of Afric..." Shakespeare said

"I can't believe I'm hearing this," Martha said but didn't sound all that offended

"It's political correctness gone mad," the Doctor said and rubbed his eye with two fingers "Um, Martha's from a far-off land. Freedonia."

Golem who had been sitting like a good dog by Alex's side was now bored he was a young dog just barely out of puppyhood and got bored fast and by the look of it so did this human-like child too.

Alex was bored and a bored Alex was not a good thing.

"Doctor Golem and I am just taking a walk I think he need it," She said to the Doctor

"Don't go too far," the Doctor said to her and tossed a key to her "And if you get lost take this it will help you find the TARDIS. And for Gallifrey sake don't burn down the town!"

Alex catches the key and put it in her pocket before her and the dog run off.

The Doctor looked after them before turning his attention back to Martha and Shakespeare.

Unknown to them Alex was being watch by Lilith who found the young girl dressed in weird cloths very intriguing.

As soon as Alex was gone a man come in, that man was Lynley.

With Alex and Golem

Alex and Golem run of to explore 1599's London they nearly knock in to a young man just a few years older than Alex; he was dressed as a noble man.

"Watch where you are going you filthy…" the young man started to say but stopped when he saw Alex's eyes.

"Yeah sorry about that mate," Alex said "Golem was dragging me alone, you big meanie."

The dog just wagged his tail happily.

The young man stared at the strange girl and the big whitish grayish dog at her side.

"Who are you," he demanded

That was not really the best thing to say to Alex, she hated guy acting like that.

"I am Lady Alexandria of TARDIS and this is my guard dog Golem," Alex said in a snob voice "And you are?"

"My name is Lord Mark Watercress," the young man said and by his voice Alex could tell that this guy was use to get his way and that was something she would make sure he didn't with her.

So instead of getting impress as Mark thought she would be Alex just snorted and walk passed him with Golem at her heels.

Golem didn't like the boy either.

Mark didn't like when girls ignored him run after Alex.

Alex heard that she was follow and without any hesitation she broke in to a mad dash to come from the young man that thought he was the centre of the world.

Alex run but sadly she didn't look where she was going or she was but she didn't see the two shadow figured before it was too late, with a fast blow to the temple and Alex was unconscious Golem who got that if he was catch Alex would not get help and both would die or something so the big dog hide and run of to find the big human-like that smelled like his mistress. He knows that he could help find Alex again.

With the Doctor and Martha

"Excuse me!" the man called Lynley said and enters the room "Hold hard a moment. This is abominable behaviour. A new play with no warning? I demand to see a script, Mr Shakespeare. As Master of the Revels, every new script must be registered at my office and examined by me before it can be performed."

"Tomorrow morning, first thing, I'll send it 'round," Shakespeare said

"I don't work to your schedule, you work to mine. The script, now!" Lynley said angry

"I can't," the Bard said

"Then tomorrow's performance is cancelled," Lynley barked

Lilith slips unnoticed from the room.

"It's all go, 'round here, isn't it?" Martha said
"I'm returning to my office for a banning order. If it's the last thing I do, 'Love's Labour's Won' will never be played," Lynley screamed and leaves.

The Doctor walked to the window to look for Alex when he couldn't see her, he started to walk around.

"Well, then... mystery solved. That's 'Love's Labour's Won' over and done with. Thought it might be something more, you know... more mysterious," Martha said looking at the Doctor who is walking around like a cage animal

When a scream could be heard from the street which made the Doctor, Martha and Shakespeare run out too see what was going one.

They rush out to the street where Lynley is spitting up water.

"It's that Lynley bloke," Martha said

"What's wrong with him? Leave it to men, I'm a doctor," the Doctor said and goes to Lynley's side.

"So am I near enough," Martha said

Down in the street, Lynley falls to the ground. The Doctor stands and runs to look down the street.

"Gotta get the heart going. Mr Lynley, c'mon, can you hear me?" Martha said and tried to hear the heart beat or the breathing "You're gonna be all right."

She prepares to start mouth-to-mouth as the Doctor returns and water gushes from Lynley's mouth.

"What the hell is that?" She asked
"I've never seen a death like it. His lungs are full of water he drowned and then..." the Doctor said "I dunno, like a blow to the heart, an invisible blow."

He standed up and addresses Dolly

"Good mistress, this poor fellow has died from a sudden imbalance of the humours. A natural if unfortunate demise. Call a constable and have him taken away," He said
"Yes, sir," Dolly said

"I'll do it, ma'am," Lilith said as she joined them

She walks away with a satisfied smirk. The Doctor crouches back down beside the body.

"And why are you telling them that?" Martha asked

"This lot still have got one foot in the Dark Ages. If I tell them the truth, they'll panic and think it was witchcraft," the Doctor tells her

"Okay, what was it then?" she asked

"Witchcraft," the Doctor said "I wonder were Alex is, I am starting to get a bit worried, I mean how long can it not take to walk that dog."

Just then a bark could be heard and soon after did the Doctor see Golem coming running without Alex.

And the Doctor knew that something was not right.

With Alex

The two shadows was two men that had heard Alex saying that she was a Lady and was now going to rob her and then kill her. They were in their house gathered over a barrow of beer talking about what to do about the child.

Behind them tied up lays Alex still unconscious, but Alex was starting to wake up slowly with a big evil headache.

"The girl don't have any money," one of them said "Let's just throw it in the Thames and be done with it."

Alex laid on the floor still as a stone just listing not breathing nearly, this was bad really bad, she was mostly like kidnapped by those men who wanted to kill her by why?

She closed her eye when the men come over to her and slowed her breathing down even more.

"The girl is dead," the man said "I will just toss the body in the river."

So he toss Alex out of the house down in the river still bond of course.

With the Doctor and Martha

"I got you a room, Sir Doctor. You and Miss Jones are just across the landing," Dolly said and she leaves.

"Poor Lynley. So many strange events. Not least of all, this land of Freedonia where a woman can be a doctor?" Shakespeare said

"Where a woman can do what she likes," Martha said

"And you, Sir Doctor. How can a man so young have eyes so old?" Shakespeare asked

"I do a lot of reading," the Doctor said looking out throw the window with Golem at his side.

He was worried they both were about Alex.

"A trite reply. Yeah, that's what I'd do," Shakespeare said before turning to Martha "And you, you look at him like you're surprised he exists. He's as much of a puzzle to you as he is to me."

"I think we should say good night," she said and leaves.

"I must work. I have a play to complete. But I'll get my answers tomorrow, Doctor, and I'll discover more about you and why this constant performance of yours," Shakespeare said

"All the world's a stage," the Doctor said when he was in the Doorway

"Hm, I might use that. Good night, Doctor," Shakespeare said

"Nighty-night, Shakespeare," the Doctor told him "Come on Golem let's find Alex."

He and the dog leaves.

Martha is waiting for them at the street.

"So are we going to bed or?" she asked

"I must find Alex first you can go and sleep if you like," the Doctor said not looking at her. "Something is really wrong and I can feel it. Golem! Seek Alex now!"

Golem start sniffing for Alex and soon did he get a trace of the sweet human-like child that had gave him a name, with a bark he told the man to follow him when he run toward the sense.

The Doctor and Martha run after him as fast as they could.

Nearly fifteen minutes later Golem stopped at the river and stared at one of the houses.

And as soon as the Doctor and Martha come panting he looked at them and then at the window and soon enough it open and something was throw out and in to the river.

It took the Doctor a minute before he saw what the thing were, Alex and she were bond too.

Without even think both the Doctor and Golem throw themselves in the river to save Alex.

Alex was sinking fast not good run through her head, if she had known this from the beginning she would not have stopped breathing this long now she couldn't start again without getting killed by the water and she couldn't hold her breath long either.

Alex tried to get to her sonic screwdriver but she was bond too hard to even move. And then she couldn't hold the breath any longer.

Fast most swim faster, most save her, run through the Doctor's head when he swam down to save Alex.

Golem was beside him, how the dog could hold its breath this long he didn't know and at the moment he didn't care.

The few minutes that it took the Doctor to reach Alex and for Golem to reach her too, was like an eternity for the Doctor.

Alex felt how something grab her by the collar of her shirt and pull her up but just as she and the person that had saved her got back up to the air she passed out.

Soon after that Alex was brought up the surface did Golem also come up to the surface.

Martha had been watching it all in shock but now when the Doctor and Golem was swimming towards her with Alex in need of help.

"Martha! Help," the Doctor said and lift the unconscious Alex up to Martha.

Soon were both Alex and the Doctor with Golem on the street and Martha was watching the Doctor who was trying to get Alex to breathe again.

"Come on Sweetheart breathe for me," the Doctor said and tried to get Alex to wake up.

Martha feared the worse till that she saw the smile on the Doctor's face.

"She will live," He said and hugged the girl tightly.

And at that moment he looked every bit as a father hugging his daughter.

"Let's get her back to the room," the Doctor said and lifted Alex up and begun to walk back to the inn with Golem after him and Martha just a few step after the dog.

While they walked back to the inn Alex told them what had happened and thanked both the Doctor and Golem for saving her.

The Doctor just hugged her closed.

In the bed room at the inn.

Martha is examining their room when the Doctor enters with Alex in his arms and Golem at his heels.

"It's not exactly five-star, is it?" Martha said

"Oh, it'll do. I've seen worse," the Doctor said and placed Alex in the bed and pull the covers around her. "Can you sit here for a minute till that I fix something for you to drink?"

Alex nod tiredly.

"I haven't even got a toothbrush," Martha said

"Ooh," the Doctor said and pats pockets and pulls out a brush "Contains Venusian spearmint."

A maid knocked on the door and gave the Doctor a mug with broth for Alex, who drank it and then curl up in the bed with the covers tightly around her.

"So, who's going where? I mean, there's only one bed," Martha said nodding at the bed where Alex where curled up on.

"We'll manage. C'mon," the Doctor said and flops onto the bed beside the now nearly sleeping Alex.

"So, magic and stuff. That's a surprise. It's a little bit 'Harry Potter'," Martha said

"Wait till you read Book Seven. Oh, I cried," the Doctor said

"But is it real, though? I mean, witches, black magic and all that, it's real?" Martha asked

"'Course it isn't!" Alex said in a thick voice thanks to the fact that she was nearly asleep.

"Well, how am I supposed to know? I've only just started believing in time travel. Give me a break," Martha said a bit annoyed

"Looks like witchcraft, but it isn't. Can't be. Are you gonna stand there all night?" the Doctor said

"Budge up a bit, then," Martha said and sat down on the bed next to Alex who was laying in the middle, she moved closer to the Doctor "Sorry, there's not much room. Us three here, same bed. Tongues will wag."

"There's such a thing as psychic energy but a human couldn't channel it like that. Not without a generator the size of Taunton and I think we'd have spotted that," the Doctor said oblivious and turn so that he was facing Alex and Martha "No. There's something I'm missing, Martha."

Martha lies down so they're face-to-face

"Something really close, staring me right in the face and I can't see it. Rose would know. A friend of mine, Rose. Right now, she'd say exactly the right thing," He said and turn on back breaking the sort of intimate moment "Still, can't be helped. You're a novice, and Alex is nearly asleep so never mind. I'll take you back home tomorrow. Now sleep."

Alex nearly glared at Martha when she notice the look that Martha had had before, Alex didn't like that Martha was so weird with the Doctor like she was in love with him. She would soon make Martha stop that nonsense and with that Alex turn around so that she had her back against Martha and soon was she asleep.

"Great!" Martha said miffed she turns her back on him and blows out the candle. She had notice the glare from Alex but couldn't get why Alex was mad at her.

The Doctor lay on the bed nearly asleep when Golem who had been sleeping on the floor decided that he wanted to sleep with Alex too and jump up in the bed and fall asleep over the feet of the three people that were sleeping in the bed.

That woke the Doctor up and with a sigh he looked down at Alex who was snuggling up against him.

He still couldn't get that she was his daughter. Was he really fit to be her father?

A screams could be heard.

The Doctor jumps up from the bed and runs to aid followed by Martha and Alex.

In Shakespeare's room

Shakespeare wakes with a start when they enter and stop to examine Dolly's body.

"Wha'? What was that?" Shakespeare said

Martha runs to the window where she sees the silhouette of a witch on a broom flying in the sky.

"Her heart gave out. She died of fright," the Doctor said

"Doctor?" Martha said

"What did you see?" the Doctor asked and joining her at the window with Alex at his heels

"A witch," Martha told him.

Alex stood beside the Doctor still very sleepy, the Doctor put an arm around her and pulled her closer so that she could rest her head against him and nearly fall asleep.

"Really?" The Doctor said "Well we have to look into that tomorrow weeeell later today, but first you two need some more sleep."

And with that he led his two companions back to their rooms.

Soon was it dawn and a cock crows some were in the town.

In Shakespeare's room

The Doctor and Martha sit at Shakespeare's desk; Alex is sitting on the floor with Golem.

"Oh, sweet Dolly Bailey. She sat out three bouts of the plague in this place. We all ran like rats. But what could have scared her so? She had such enormous spirit," Shakespeare said and turn from his place at the window to face the Doctor and Martha and sat down at the desk.

"Rage, rage against the dying of the light," the Doctor said

"I might use that," Shakespeare said

"You can't. It's someone else's," Alex said from the floor

"But the thing is, Lynley drowned on dry land," Martha said "Dolly died of fright and they were both connected to you."

"You're accusing me?" the bard said calmly

"No, but I saw a witch, big as you like, flying, cackling away, and you've written about witches," Martha said

"I have? When was that?" Shakespeare said confused like he was trying to remember all his plays and sonnets.

"Not, not quite yet," the Doctor said in a low voice

"Peter Streete spoke of witches," Shakespeare said
"Who's Peter Streete?" Alex asked from the floor having listening to what the adult had been talking about.

"Our builder. He sketched the plans to the Globe," Shakespeare answered not even noticing that it was a child that asked.

"The architect. Hold on, the architect! The architect!" The Doctor said slams his fist on table "The Globe! Come on!"

He rushes off, followed by Martha, Alex with Golem at her heels and Shakespeare.

THE GLOBE THEATRE

The Doctor was in the pit while Martha and Shakespeare were onstage, Alex and Golem was looking around the theatre for something to do but they were never further away than Alex couldn't see the Doctor or he couldn't see her.

"The columns there, right? 14 sides. I've always wondered but I never asked..."The Doctor said looked around "Tell me, Will, why 14 sides?"
"It was the shape Peter Streete thought best that's all," Shakespeare told the Doctor "Said it carried the sound well."
"Why does that ring a bell? 14…" the Doctor asked out in the air for himself to answer
"There are 14 lines in a sonnet," Martha said
"So there is. Good point. Words and shapes following the same design," the Doctor said and started to paces "14 lines, 14 sides, 14 facets…Oh, my head." He started to hit his head with his open palm in mild frustration "Tetradecagon... think, think, think! Words, letters, numbers, lines!"
"This is just a theatre," Shakespeare said confused he couldn't get why this was so important for the Doctor or how this could help with the witches.

Alex had wander over to the Doctor and was now listening to what they were saying and trying to remember something she had heard about this but it was like trying to hold sand with a fork it just ran through.

"Oh, but a theatre's magic, isn't it? You should know. Stand on this stage, say the right words with the right emphasis a the right time..." the Doctor said and walk over to the stage while talking "Oh, you can make men weep, or cry with joy, change them. You can change people's minds just with words in this place. And if you exaggerate that..."

And with that he and Alex wander out from the stage.

"It's like you're police box. Small wooden box with all that POWER inside," Martha said and showed with her hand the power that the TARDIS had.

"Oh. Oh, Martha Jones, I like you. Tell you what, though," The Doctor said and turn to the Bard "Peter Streete would know. Can I talk to him?"
"You won't get an answer," Shakespeare asked "A month after finishing this place... lost his mind."
"Why? What happened?" Alex asked
"Started raving about witches, hearing voices, babbling. His mind was addled," The Bard said
"Where is he now?" The Doctor asked
"Bedlam," Shakespeare said
"What's Bedlam?" Martha asked
"Bethlem Hospital," Shakespeare said "The madhouse."

The Doctor pulled Alex closed to him more on instinct than anything else. Alex looked up and smiled at him.

"We're gonna go there. Right now," The Doctor said and took Alex hand "Come on."

They heads out with Martha and Golem follows as does Shakespeare.

"Wait! I'm coming with you. I want to witness this at first hand!" Shakespeare called after them when two young actors enter He give the script to one of them. "Ralph, the last scene as promised. Copy it, hand it round. Learn it. Speak it. Back before curtain up. Remember, kid, project. Eyes and teeth. You never know — the Queen might turn up."

With that he walked out muttering that the Queen would never show up she hasn't yet why would she do it now.

STREET

In the street, Martha and Shakespeare follow the Doctor and Alex who was walking a bit away from them. Golem was having the time of his life he was running between the Doctor and Alex and Martha and Shakespeare.

"So, tell me of Freedonia, where women can be doctors, writers, actors," Shakespeare said and pet Golem.

"This country's ruled by a woman," Martha said
"Ah, she's royal. That's God's business. Though you are a royal beauty," Shakespeare said
Martha stopped and with that the Bard stopped too.

"Whoa, Nelly! I know for a fact you've got a wife in the country," She said still smiling.

"But Martha, this is Town," Shakespeare said trying to flirt a bit more with this dark beautiful woman.

The Doctor and Alex who had been a few step ahead of the flirting duo stopped.

"Come on. We can all have a good flirt later," He called to them

"Martha and Will sitting in a tre First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in a baby carriage!" Alex sang giggling as any ten year old would do.

Martha look a bit red around the cheeks, Shakespeare just laughed at it all and winked at Martha.

"Is that a promise, Doctor?" He asked cheekily

"Oh, 57 academics just punched the air. Now move!" the Doctor said

And with that they jogged the rest of the way to Bethlem Hospital.

BETHLEM, CORRIDOR

Loud screams and moans sound as the Doctor, Alex, Martha and Shakespeare are led through the halls. They had to leave Golem outside.

"Does my lord, Doctor, wish some entertainment while he waits? I'd whip these madmen," The Jailer asked the Doctor "They'll put on a good show for ya. Bandog and Bedlam!"
"No, I don't! "the Doctor crossly

"Wait here, my lords, while I make him decent for the lady and child," the Jailer said and with that he walks away.

Alex who was still holding the Doctor's hand was now wishing that she had stayed with Golem outside, it was dark and people was in pain and she couldn't block it out all the pain.

The Doctor notice that Alex was squeezing his hand quit hard.

He squeezed the hand back and smiled down at her to try and make her less scared, it worked.

"So this is what you call a hospital, yeah? Where the patients are whipped to entertain the gentry?" She asked "And you put your friend in here?"

"Oh, and it's all so different in Freedonia?" He asked
"But you're clever! Do you honestly think this place is any good?" Martha asked

"I've been mad. I've lost my mind," Shakespeare said "Fear of this place set me right again. It serves its purpose."

"Mad in what way? Martha asked

"You lost your son," the Doctor said softly and squeezed Alex hand a bit.

"My only boy. The Black Death took him. I wasn't even there." Shakespeare said

"I didn't know. I'm sorry," Martha said

"It made me question everything." The Bard said "The futility of this fleeting existence. To be or not to be... oh, that's quite good."

"You should write that down," Alex said

"Hm, maybe not. A bit pretentious?" He said

The Doctor shrugged

"This way, m'lord!" the Jailer called to them

They walk down the hall to Peter Streete's cell and the jailer unlocks the door.

"They can be dangerous, m'lord," the Jailer said "Don't know their own strength. Maybe the little one should wait out here with me."
"I think it helps if you don't whip them!" the Doctor said and placed Alex behind him "And my child will stay here with me, Now get out!"

The jailer leaves and the Doctor approaches Peter slowly.

"Peter? Peter Streete?" He asked the man before him and crouched down so that he was in eye level with Peter.

"He's the same as he was," Shakespeare said "You'll get nothing out of him."

"Peter?" the Doctor asked and lied a hand on Peter's shoulder

Peter's head jerks up and he looks at the Doctor with wild, glassy eyes and seems like he wants to speak. Alex who had been standing behind the Doctor looked at the man and felt so sorry for him, she wish she could help him.

WITCHES' HOUSE

Lilith pauses she sense that something wrong.

"What is this? I must see," Lilith said and looks into the cauldron and sees the Doctor with Peter. "That stranger, he was at the inn with Shakespeare. I thought then he smelt of something new."

"Now he visits the madhouse. The architect!" Bloodtide called out

All three witches gasps.

BETHLAM, PETER'S CELL

"Peter, I'm the Doctor. Go into the past, one year ago," the Doctor said and placed his fingertips along Peter's face "Let your mind go back, back to when everything was fine and shining. Everything that happened in this year since happened to somebody else. It was just a story. A winter's tale. Let go. Listen. That's it, just let go."

He then lies Peter down on his cot and stand up.

"Tell me the story, Peter. Tell me about the witches," Alex asks the now laying down man.

WITCHES' HOUSE

"Who is this Doctor? Why does he come now at our time of glory?" Lilith hiss "Doomfinger, transport yourself. Doom the Doctor. Doom his hide."

Doomfinger run off.

BETHLAM, PETER'S CELL

"Witches spoke to Peter. In the night, they whispered. Got Peter to build the Globe to their design. THEIR design! The 14 walls — always 14. When the work was done," Peter start to tell the people in his cell with waving arms, then he start to laugh "they sapped poor Peter's wits."

Martha and Shakespeare look rather uncomfortable with the tale, Alex just stands by the Doctor listening to the tale.

"Where did Peter see the witches? Where in the city?" the Doctor ask and crouches beside Peter "Peter, tell me. You've got to tell me where were they?"

"All Hallows Street," Peter tells the Doctor

"Too many words," Doomfinger hissed as she appears beside the Doctor

The Doctor and Alex goes to stand beside Martha.

"What the hell?" Martha said

"Just one touch of the heart," Doomfinger said and she lays her hand on Peter's chest.

"Noooo!" the Doctor and Alex Scream

With a loud "Ahhhhh!" Peter dies.

"Witch! I'm seeing a witch!" Shakespeare

"Who would be next, hmm? Just one touch," Doomfinger said she was enjoying this "Oh, oh, I'll stop your frantic hearts. Poor, fragile mortals."

"Let us out! Let us out!" Martha screams hope a jailer would come and let them out
"That's not gonna work. The whole building's shouting that," The Doctor said

"Who will die first, hmm?" Doomfinger ask "Maybe the child will be first."

Alex glared at the witch from her place behind the Doctor.

"Well, if you're looking for volunteers," the Doctor said and place Alex's hand in Martha's with a look that clearly say to hold on to it then he walks towards Doomfinger.

"No! Don't!" Alex screams and tried to get loose from Martha who hold her hand tightly.

"Doctor, can you stop her?" Shakespeare ask nervously

"No mortal has power over me," the Witch said confidently

"Oh, but there's a power in words," the Doctor said "If I can find the right one — if I can just know you..."

"None on Earth has knowledge of us," the witch said
"Then it's a good thing I'm here. Now think, think, think... Humanoid female, uses shapes and words to channel energy... ah, 14! That's it!" the Doctor said and point at the witch "14! The 14 stars of the Rexel planetary configuration! Creature, I name you Carrionite!"

Doomfinger wails and disappears in a bright light.

"What did you do?" Martha wonder

"I named her. The power of a name. That's old magic," the Doctor told her

Alex had finally get free from Martha and glared at the Doctor.

"But there's no such thing as magic," Martha said
"Well, it's just a different sort of science. You lot, you chose mathematics. Given the right string of numbers, the right equation, you can split the atom. Carrionites use words instead," Alex explained ignoring the Doctor

"Use them for what?" Shakespeare asked

"The end of the world," the Doctor answered.

And with that they left the so called hospital.

ON THE WAY BACK.

Shakespeare and Martha walked ahead of the Doctor and Alex, Golem was running around them.

Alex was still ignoring the Doctor, and the Doctor didn't know what to do, he couldn't stand that Alex was mad at him.

He placed a hand on the young child shoulder and turn her towards him.

"Alex I am sorry if I scared you back then," he said softly.

Alex's eyes glared at him for a moment before she hugged him tightly.

"I was so scared," she said "please don't do stuff like that again."

"I promise," the Doctor said but both know that he was lying.

And with that they hurried after Martha and the Bard.

SHAKESPEARE'S ROOM

While back at the inn.

"The Carrionites disappeared way back at the dawn of the universe," the Doctor told them while pacing "Nobody was sure if they were real or legend."

Shakespeare who had been washing his face while the Doctor had spoken.

"Well, I'm going for real," he said and dried his face.

"But what do they want?" Alex asked

"A new empire on Earth. A world of bones and blood and witchcraft," the Doctor said

"But how?" Martha asked

"I'm looking at the man with the words," the Doctor said and looked at Shakespeare

"Me? But I've done nothing," He said

"Hold on, though. What were you doing last night, when that Carrionite was in the room?" Martha asked the Bard

"Finishing the play," he answered her
"What happens on the last page?" the Doctor asked

"The boys get the girls. They have a bit of a dance. It's all as funny and thought provoking as usual, Shakespeare said "except those last few lines. Funny thing is... I don't actually remember writing them."

"That's it. They used you. They gave you the final words. Like a spell, like a code. 'Love's Labours Won' — it's a weapon! The right combination of words," the Doctor said "spoken at the right place with the shape of the Globe as an energy converter! The play's the thing! And yes, you can have that."

That last comment made Shakespeare smile.

The Doctor was looking at map

"All Hallows Street. There it is. Martha Alex, we'll track them down. Will, you get to the Globe. Whatever you do, stop that play!" The Doctor said and pointed at the street on the map.

"I'll do it," Shakespeare said and shakes the Doctor's hand

"All these years I've been the cleverest man around. Next to you, I know nothing."

"Oh, don't complain," Martha said

"I'm not. It's marvellous. Good luck, Doctor," the Bard said

"Good luck, Shakespeare," Alex said smiling.

She and the Doctor with Martha after heads for door

"Once more unto the breach!" the Doctor said while running out.

"I like that. Wait a minute... that's one of mine," Shakespeare said
The Doctor pokes his head around door.

"Oh, just shift!" the Doctor said and with that he was off again.

ALL HALLOWS TREET

They were walking down the street.

"All Hallows Street, but which house?" the Doctor wondered "The thing is, though... am I missing something here?" Martha asked "The world didn't end in 1599. It just didn't. Look at me — I'm living proof."

"Oh, how to explain the mechanics of the infinite temporal flux? I know! To the Future'! It's like 'Back to the Future'!" the Doctor said
"The film?" Martha asked
"No, the novelisation. Yes, the film. Marty McFly goes back and changes history," Alex said annoyed

"Alex," the Doctor said in a stern voice.

Alex muttered a sorry.

Martha nodded.

"And he starts fading away," Martha said realises "Oh my God, am I gonna fade?"

"You and the entire future of the human race. It ends right now in 1599 if we don't stop it. But which house?" the Doctor said.

The door to Lilith's house slowly opens.

"Ah, make that WITCH house," Alex said

And they walked in.

WITCHES' HOUSE

They walk inside where Lilith is waiting.

"I take it we're expected," the Doctor said

"Oh, I think Death has been waiting for you a very long time," Lilith said

"Right then, it's my turn" Martha said and steps forwards "I know how to do this." She points "I name thee, Carrionite!"

Lilith is unaffected and laughing.

"What did I do wrong? Was it the finger?" Martha asked
"The power of a name works only once. Observe," Lilith said and points at Martha "I gaze upon this bag of bones and now I name thee Martha Jones."

Martha collapses and the Doctor lowers her to the ground. Alex did what the Doctor had told her to do if this would happened and that was to hide, so that was what she did, she was worried about Martha but trusted the Doctor.

"What have you done?" the Doctor asked

"Only sleeping, alas. Curious, the name has less impact. She's somehow out of her time. And as for you, Sir Doctor!" Lilith said she points, expecting a reaction "Fascinating. There is no name. Why would a man hide his title in such despair? Oh, but look. There's still one word with the power that aches."

Lilith smiles a horrid smile.

"The naming won't work on me," The Doctor said

"But your heart grows warmer. The west wind blows and carries down the distant sound of... Alexandria," Lilith said thinking she had won now.

The Doctor stands up angry

"Oh, big mistake 'cos that name keeps me fighting!" The Doctor said "The Carrionites vanished! Where did you go?"

"The Eternals found the right word to banish us into deep darkness," Lilith said

"And how did you escape?" Alex said and come out from her hiding and stood by the Doctor.

"New words. New and glittering from a mind like no other," the Carrionites witch said.

"Shakespeare," Alex and the Doctor said together

"His son perished. The grief of a genius. Grief without measure. Madness enough to allow us entrance," Lilith explained

"How many of you?" the Doctor asked

"Just the three. But the play tonight shall restore the rest. Then the human race will be purged as pestilence. And from this world we will lead the universe back to the old ways of blood and magic," Lilith said

The Doctor walked over to Lilith.

"Hmm... busy schedule... but first you gotta get past me," the Doctor said and scratch his right sideburn he stand face-to-face with Lilith.

"Oh, that should be a pleasure considering my enemy has such a handsome shape," She said seductively and she runs her fingers along his face.

"Now, that's one form of magic that's definitely not gonna work on me," the Doctor said

Alex was nearly growling at the witch how dare she touch the Doctor like that.

"Oh, Well if that don't work this might," the witch said and yanked a lock of hair from Alex head and backs away.

"What did you do?" Alex asked rubbed the spot of her head where the hair had been yanked out.

"Souvenir," Lilith said

"Well, give it back!" Alex shouted

Lilith throws up arms and the window behind her opens and she flies out backwards, levitating outside.

The Doctor and Alex rush over to the windowsill.

"Well, that's just cheating." The Doctor said

"Behold, Doctor. How your daughter will just be a mere puppet," the witch said and pulled out a doll and wraps Alex's hair about it. Martha wakes slowly.

"Now, you might call that magic... I'd call that a DNA replication module," Alex said

"What use is your science now?" Lilith and stabbed the doll. Alex lets out a cry and falls to the floor as Lilith cackles and flies away. Martha rushed to the Doctor who is kneeing beside Alex.

"Oh my God! Doctor! Don't worry, I've got her," Martha said rolled Alex onto her back and listens for a heartbeat "Hold on, young lady. Two hearts?"

"You're making a habit of this young lady," the Doctor said to Alex who try to stand and nearly falls

"Aahh!" Alex gasped

Martha and the Doctor supports her.

"She have only got one heart working. We got to get the other one started," the Doctor said

"I know if you hit me on the chest my heart would start working!" Alex gasped so while the Doctor held her Martha hit Alex to start her heart.

"Aahh! Other side!"

She hits her again

"On the back! On the back!

She does

"Left a bit!"

Again

"Ahh, lovely," Alex said and stood up. "There we go! Ba-da-boom! Thanks."

"Well what are we standing here for?" the Doctor said

He rushes out followed by Martha and Alex.

STREET

Martha, Alex and the Doctor run through the streets.

"We're going the wrong way!" Alex called after the Doctor

"No, we're not!" the Doctor answered back and run down a different street. "We're going the wrong way!"

They run back the way they came.

THE GLOBE THEATRE

Two actors are acting onstage, beginning the final speech.

"Behold the swainish sight of woman's love. Pish!" One of the actors say "It's out of season to be heavy disposed."

"It is now, my mothers. The final words to activate the Tetradecagon," Lilith said

"Betwixt Dravidian shores and Linear 5-9-3-0-1-6-7.02 and strikes the fulsome grove of Rexel 4. Co-radiating crystal, activate!" the first Actor said

"The portal opens! It begins!" Lilith said

The Carrionites cackle.

STREET

Running in the streets, the Doctor, Alex and Martha hear screaming and see a red glow of energy pouring from the Globe. The preacher from when they first arrived is there. People is trying to run away from the red glow.

"I told thee so! I told thee!" the crazy Preacher screamed

"Stage door!" the Doctor called out

The Doctor, Alex and Martha rushes off. Thunderclouds and lightening form over the Globe mixing with the red glow.

THE GLOBE THEATRE

The audience tries to leave but the doors bang shut.

BACKSTAGE

The Doctor and Martha burst in backstage to see Shakespeare nursing his head.

"Stop the play! I think that was it. Yeah, I said, "Stop the play"!" The Doctor yelled

"I hit my head," Shakespeare said

"Yeah, don't rub it, you'll go bald," Alex said

Then they heard screams from out front

"I think that's my cue!" the Doctor said and runs out. Martha grabs Shakespeare's hand and they follow closely by Alex.

"Now begins the millennium of blood!" the Carrionites called out and then they cackle. The Doctor runs onstage with Martha, Alex and Shakespeare behind him.

"The Doctor! Then watch this world become a blasted heath! They come! They come!" Lilith

The remaining Carrionites freed from the crystal fly about the Globe.

"Come on, Will! History needs you!" the Doctor said and grabbed Shakespeare

"But what can I do?" The Bard asked
"Reverse it!" The Doctor screamed
"How am I supposed to do that?" Shakespeare asked
"The shape of the Globe gives words power, but you're the wordsmith, the one true genius. The only man clever enough to do it!" the Doctor screamed to him

"But what words? I have none ready!" Shakespeare screamed back

"You're William Shakespeare!" Alex screamed

"But these Carrionite phrases, the need such precision!" Shakespeare screamed

"Trust yourself. When you're locked away in your room, the words just come, don't they? Like magic. Words of the right sound, the right shape, the right rhythm — words that last forever! That's what you do, Will! You choose perfect words. Do it. Improvise!" Alex and the Doctor screamed to the Bard and when they had said that they stepped back

"Close up this den of hateful, dire decay! Decomposition of your witches' plot! You thieve my brains, consider me your toy. My doting Doctor tells me I am not!" Shakespeare called out from the middle of the stage.

"No! Words of power!" Lilith said

"Foul Carrionite spectres, cease your show! Between the points..." Shakespeare said and looks to the Doctor.

"7-6-1-3-9-0!" the Doctor told him

"7-6-1-3-9-0! And banished like a tinker's cuss, I say to thee..." Shakespeare called out and then again, looks to the Doctor who is at a loss.

"Expelliarmus!" Martha screamed

"Expelliarmus!" Alex screamed

"Expelliarmus!" The Doctor Screamed

"Expelliarmus!" Shakespeare screamed

"Good old JK!" the Doctor said

The Carrionites scream.

"The deep darkness! They are consumed! Ahhh!" Lilith screamed

The wraith-like carrionites get sucked up into the cloud, tornado fashion, as do all copies of the play.

"'Love's Labours Won'. There it goes," Alex said

The cloud dissipates and the audience sighs in relief then begins applauding. The Doctor and Alex ducks out as actors take their bows.

"They think it was all special effects," Martha said
"Your effect is special indeed," Shakespeare said
"It's not your best line," Martha said

Martha and Shakespeare take their bows as well. The Doctor goes to Lilith's box where he finds the crystal within which the three are trapped. He takes it with him.

It was first now that the Doctor notice that Alex wasn't by his side.

He found her outside with Golem.

"Hey Alex how is it?" the Doctor asked

"A bit tired, but otherwise fine," the young time child said. "We did good today."

The Doctor nodded, he was very proud of her.

"I am very proud of you," He said and hugged her

THE GLOBE THEATRE

Next Morning, Martha and Shakespeare are sitting at the edge of the stage.

"And I say, a heart for a hart and a dear for a deer," Shakespeare said

"I don't get it," Martha said

"Then give me a joke from Freedonia," Shakespeare said

"OK, Shakespeare walks into a pub and the landlord says "oi, mate, you're bard"," Martha said

"It's brilliant! Doesn't make sense, mind you, but never mind that," Shakespeare said and wraps his hand about her waist "Come here."

"I've only just met you," Martha said

"The Doctor might never kiss you. Why not entertain a man who will?" Shakespeare said

"I don't know how to tell you this, oh great genius, but your breath doesn't half stink," Martha said

The Doctor and Alex emerges from backstage wearing a ruff collar and carrying an animal skull.

"Good props store back there! I'm not sure about this though," He said and looks at skull "Reminds me of a Sycorax."

"Sycorax. Nice word. I'll have that off you as well," the Bard said

"I should be on 10%. How's your head?" the Doctor said

"Still aching," Shakespeare answered

"Here, I got you this," the Doctor said and removes collar and puts it on Shakespeare's neck "Neck brace. Wear that for a few days till it's better, although you might wanna keep it. It suits you."

"What about the play?" Martha asked

"Gone. I looked all over — every single copy of 'Love's Labours' Won went up in the sky," Alex said

"My lost masterpiece," Shakespeare sighed

"You could write it up again," Martha said

"Yeah, better not, Will. There's still power in those words. Maybe it should best stay forgotten," the Doctor said

"Oh, but I've got new ideas. Perhaps it's time I wrote about fathers and sons. In memory of my boy — my precious Hamnet," Shakespeare said

"Hamnet?" Martha said

"That's him," the Bard said

"Ham-NET?" Martha said again

"What's wrong with that? Alex asked "I like it."

Shakespeare smiled at the young child.

"Anyway, time we were off. I've got a nice attic in the TARDIS where this lot" the Doctor said and held the crystal "can scream for all eternity and I've gotta take Martha back to Freedonia."

"You mean travel on through time and space," the Bard said smiling

"You what?" The Doctor said
"You and your child are from another world like the Carrionites and Martha is from the future. It's not hard to work out," Shakespeare said

"That's... incredible. You are incredible," Alex said while the Doctor just nodded

"We're alike in many ways, Doctor. Martha, let me say goodbye to you in a new verse. A sonnet for my Dark Lady. Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate—-"Shakespeare started to say

Alex pretended to vomit over the lovey dovey.

But one of the actor called "Will! Will! You'll never believe it! She's here! She's turned up!"

"We're the talk of the town. She heard about last night! She wants us to perform it again," another actor said
"Who?" Martha asked

"Her Majesty! She's here!" the actor said

Fanfare as Elizabeth I enters.

"Queen Elizabeth I!" Alex said excited

"Doctor!" Elizabeth said

"What?" the Doctor said confused

"My sworn enemy!" the queen said

"What?" the Doctor said confused

"Off with his head!" Elizabeth ordered

"What?" the Doctor said confused

"Never mind "what", just run! See you, Will! And thanks!" Martha said and

And she and the Doctor run off with Alex before them.

"Stop that pernicious Doctor!" the Queen ordered

Shakespeare laughs.

Martha, Alex and the Doctor run through the streets to the TARDIS.

"Stop in the name of the Queen!" a soldier called after them

"What have you done to upset her?!" Alex called to the Doctor

"How should I know? Haven't even met her yet. That's time travel for you! Still, can't wait to find out," the Doctor said and unlocks the TARDIS and Martha with Alex just after run in.

"That's something to look forward to. Oh!" the Doctor said and ducks inside as archers fire, embedding an arrow in the door. The TARDIS dematerialises.

IN THE TIME VORTEX

"So you will met the first Liz," Alex said smiling while sitting on the bench in the control room. "That is so cool."

The Doctor laughed at that but he had to admit that it was pretty cool to meet the virgin queen.

"So where to next?" he asked

"Bed," Both Alex and Martha said.

And both walked off to find their rooms.

The Doctor looked after them and most to himself he whispered "Good night my daughter."

A/N:

Well I am sorry that it took this long for this chapter to be written I have had a bit of computer problem and writers block. The Doctor will tell Alex who he really is to her.
