Paces to the North
"What about that other young State Alchemist?" Bradley suddenly said, drawing a second hostage up to be sure both Elrics knew he was serious, "as far as I have learned, she has taken quite a liking to the both of you for reasons beyond me."
Both Ed and Al tensed, as Lucia was also mentioned. Ed had seen her blush around them both, but thought it to be something else. The girl, had even with the short time they had known her, become a friend and a trustee they felt that they could talk to her about anything.
"Leave her out of this, she has nothing to do with what we are searching for," Ed said growling, as he took his watch back.
Bradley looked into the Fullmetal Alchemist's eyes, "I see, then she will be left where she is, but remember if you say anything either of them will sense the consequences," Bradley said, "but if you even try to tell her about any of this then she won't be around for you to find."
Colonel Mustang frowned at this his team was being sent to each corner of the country as hostages, why was Lucia then left so lightly. He didn't pursue it, but knew he had to send her somewhere, where she wouldn't be in trouble or be one to cause them.
He had to send her back east. There she would be safe for a while until he found something better for her. He looked over at the Elrics, who was talking with Bradley on getting permission to continue their journey to recover their bodies.
.~*~.
"We must do something to prevent them from doing anything to Lucia. She's still here in Central," Edward said in a low voice, as they left the Führer's office.
"Don't worry, Fullmetal. I know what must be done at least for a while, so she won't be in Central," Mustang said, writing something down on a piece of paper. After parting with the Elrics, Mustang went to a public telephone dialing Lucia's number for her apartment. The Alchemist had told Mustang, that she had acquired a book that she had to decode.
"Just a minute, then I'll be with you," the phone was picked up.
"Medical, don't leave me hanging" Mustang said hard to her. Lucia had been about to lay the phone down, when she heard it was Mustang.
"Colonel?" she sounded truly surprised at his harshness, he normally spoke more normal and sometimes even gently to her, "what can I do for you sir?"
"How far are you into that book of yours?"
"Not far, it's a bit difficult. Most of the text that is referred too are some that I haven't got here in this apartment, but some I have in my place in the east," she admitted weakly.
Mustang actually couldn't believe the small luck he was having, "so it would be better for you to be out east?" he asked.
"Yes, it would," he heard a pause in Lucia's voice, "is there some reason, I should be East and not in Central?" Mustang hated that this girl could be so perceptive when it came over her, "Colonel Mustang? Sir?" her voice was inquiring.
"Medical," he usually only commanded her, when things were wrong making her understand something was wrong and she had to get away as soon as possible, "you are hereby ordered to go back East and stay there until you get other orders however any reports are still to go to me."
Lucia said nothing but took it in, "I'll be gone by tomorrow," she said, "bye sir" the phone was hung up.
Mustang looked at the phone after hanging up himself, "good luck Medical, please be safe" he said leaving the phone booth, looking upwards to the sky, if he couldn't keep the rest of his team safe. He could with one, that weren't too thought off.
.~*~.
"Keep an eye on Lucia Misère," Bradley said to a soldier that came in.
"I thought we had taps on her?" the soldier said questioning the order, "she's a small fry, she might be a Sacrifice, but she's actually too stupid to know anything of importance."
"Stupid or not she might come in handy, before time is and I want to know where her Paces lead her in the future."
.~*~.
Lucia had been east for a short time, having to get some books, she needed to get from her small apartment, that she had gotten to be alone in East City, which she had rented. Lucia had, by now, decoded some of the diary by this unknown Edward Misell, but Lucia had learned that his name in fact was Misère like her.
He and his wife whose name, that Lucia had yet to find but she understood, had had a daughter, who had been very ill, but he also hinted that his wife had been pregnant, but the happiness over this vanished as the diary turned towards the elder daughter and here she was at a bit of a dead end. Some entries weren't so loosely decoded and information seemed to require another tactic.
"So Edward Misère of the missing Misère family had a wife and a daughter and he also writes that his wife was pregnant," Lucia wrote this fact down in her book, as she placed her head in her hand while writing.
"Why is he referring to things that have with Human transmutation to do here?" Lucia said, as she lifted a book, she had bought purely on instinct years ago. She closed the book leaning back looking to the ceiling, "why? He must have been able to find a cure for his daughter, because she is suddenly spoken off, as if she were well."
She lifted the Dairy high above her head looking at the text, "and this Brilis… where does that come into the picture, he suddenly speaks gently about it too?"
.~*~.
A few days after Lucia had come to the East, a soldier came to her apartment to get her having orders from Grumman. Confused she went there; as far as she knew, she was still to report everything she did to Mustang, who was stationed in Central.
"I'm being what?" Lucia said, as Grumman was telling her the orders he had for her, "why am I going north?
"The Hospital up there need an alchemist specialized in Medical Alchemy and you are the only one known to us," Grumman said, Lucia frowned but nodded.
"I guess I am," she said before leaving.
"Lucia, this is highly classified. No one must know you are up there," Grumman said, folding his hands. Lucia turned; this was a first, "you are to tell no one, where you are going. Do you have an Automail, which can stand the cold?"
Lucia nodded, "last time I was past Rush Valley. I asked them to make a spare arm for me, because I was planning on going there at the time, but things came up…" she stopped herself, but Grumman understood seemingly without Lucia explaining.
"There's a trusted man in town, who can help you with the switching. Remember do not tell where you are going" Grumman looked thoughtful, "but I have a report from one of my soldiers, that someone has been watching you."
"What?" Lucia was shocked, she had understood from Mustang, that something was up and he needed her safe, but someone actually watching her was shocking.
"You must leave East City quietly, but I doubt it would be too much trouble for you?" Grumman said Lucia gave a smile.
"Off course not" she said already having the perfect plan.
.~*~.
Bradley looked at a report that came in from the East, "what?" he said as he reviewed it.
A soldier came in at that time, "Is something wrong, Wrath?"
"One of the persons, I send to keep a track of the Medical Alchemist, reports that she has gone missing from the East. She was called into Grumman's office a few days ago, but since then he has only seen her at a local Automail Mechanic, who only said that she had switched arms, claiming the other was hurting her somewhat and she wanted a break from it"
The soldier looked angry as well, "how incompetent are humans really they have to watch one of their own?"
Bradley looked at the Soldier, "calm down, Envy. she will turn up eventually, just because we don't know where she is, doesn't mean that she's not inside the ranges of the military," Bradley turned watching the large map on the wall ,"she is somewhere out there."
The Soldier looked up at the map as well.
.~*~.
Lucia was walking away from the hospital after having travelled for a few days to get to North City; she had gone to the Northern Command, telling them she was around in case, they needed any medical assistance. They had been a bit shocked to meet her, however had been pleased that she had checked in with them, so they knew who was in the area.
Lucia had helped at the hospital for a few hours, teaching a few healing methods to frostbites and persons with hyperthermia, which she had found out a little while ago. She had also been called in to help with a patient that had been dying, but she stabilized with her healing allowing the doctors to finish the wounds and Lucia closed them slightly, but allowed the body to heal the rest.
While she was walking, when someone called after her, but not her name, "Shadigan!" a female voice sounded right behind her, "Shadigan Misère, stop this instant!"
Lucia stopped turning around with a frown, not due to knowing the name other than the surname, "Shadigan, you really did survive" the woman sounded happy seeing Lucia, but not for her being Lucia, but presumed someone else.
"Excuse me but who are you?" Lucia asked.
"Honey, it's me," the woman said, walking forward hugging Lucia, who began to struggle.
"Let go of me!" she roared, the touch hadn't felt familiar at all. No Lucia wanted to hit the woman as an unexplained rage came over her, "LET ME GO!"
The woman recoiled looking at Lucia in confusion, "Shadigan… honey, what is wrong with you?" then her eyes went wide, "you lost your memory, Edward said that it was a possibility from the transmutation, but to be so extensive."
"What transmutation?" Lucia enquired, the woman frowned grabbing Lucia's face and who was this Edward? She was talking about Lucia only know one Edward and he certainly wasn't who she should know. With a frown, she recalled the book; there was a second Edward, which she knew…
"What name do you go under?"
"What?"
"What name?!"
"Lucia Misère" Lucia answered, moving back. She was well aware of the scene, people was watching them whispering among each other.
"So your soul merged with that unwanted horror," the woman's voice became cold.
"Do not call me that!" Lucia cried first and then she came again; "don't you dare call her that!"
Lucia placed a hand over her mouth, what had just happened? The woman was looking frightened at her, "I will call her whatever I like… Shadigan."
"My name is Lucia!" Lucia stated furiously.
The woman simply walked forward, taking something out of her pocket, "no, it's Shadigan, don't you ever forget that," a blue crystal necklace was placed around Lucia's neck, next to her gift from her foster father. She looked down at it, before taking in the woman.
"I'm your mother Tiami, come look me up when you remember" the woman vanished; leaving Lucia in confusion, was this a part of her past she couldn't remember? She looked at her hand, which was shaking in restrained anger, what was she so angry? Moreover, what had she screamed?
Lucia was, for the first time in a really long time, more than confused. Her thought was bordering on being chaotic, as she looked up in the direction the woman had vanished.
"Medical!" a male voice called, she turned leaving her thoughts away, "Medical Alchemist!"
She frowned, as the voice was urgent. She looked over her shoulder, before running towards the voice, "I'm here!" she called, running towards a soldier, which had run around searching for her.
"Your presence has been requested, you need to go to the Northern command"
"Is there a reason why?" Lucia asked, she had only been at the hospital for one day and now she really needed to get back to a patient, she was planning to use a new type of Medical she had found.
"No, but it was urgent"
.~*~.
"It seems a little convenient that a Medical Alchemist just happened to be here" she heard a voice say, as she approached the commanding officers office.
"She is here on research, but she is still an Alchemist in the military, so she has to take up on the task of healing the wounded," the commander said.
"I'll like to see her first, before you recommend her too highly."
Lucia shook her head, knocking on the door, "enter"
"Commander," Lucia said, coming in with calm attire, "you have requested me?"
"Yes, Misère"
"That is a Medical Alchemist?" Lucia took the dark-skinned man in, she had a feeling what he was, but didn't comment on it, "She's nothing but a child"
"Perhaps," Lucia answered for the commander, who was looking at her with a bit of warning. She shot him a 'not to worry look', "I am the second youngest to archived one thing," she moved her right hand into her pocket, grabbing her pocket watch; "my name is Lucia Misère. True but I'm also known as the Medical Alchemist," she took the pocket watch up, she gently smiled, "people always think down on my size, since I'm so young."
"What have you archived otherwise?"
"I have saved more than one life in my time, also helped defeat robbers, Killers and other creeping creeper criminals I can't mention."
.~*~.
Lucia looked up at the Briggs Fort, as she stepped out of the car, the soldier had presented himself, as Major Miles as they had left the Northern command, "there were many injured and we need a specialist," the Major leading Lucia said, "we never expected a State Alchemist to be one"
"Well, I might be young… but I have seen my share of wounded, but most of all I have a reason for doing what I do." Lucia stated as she looked around she had never been north before, sure south and West had been seen and experienced, but that was about that.
They walked down through the fort in silence, "what is your reason for doing what you do?" the major asked, Lucia looked at his back.
"I have no memory. Being an Alchemist has brought me closer to the truth," he looked back at her, his sunglasses shining from the overlaying light, "there's a woman in North City, who knows me, but she called me Shadigan, not Lucia," Lucia replied, "I'll just fix your wounded and then I'll be off to see her and get an explanation."
"It might not be so easy to just leave here"
"Perhaps not, but I would do my best for everyone" the Major looked at her again after having greeted a passing soldier, who looked at them with curiosity, "that's reason enough for me."
"All here have a reason for being here," Miles said.
"And yours is?" Lucia said the Major looked away not replying. Lucia frowned, before clapping her hands bringing one to touch him, he looked at her in confusion, "no worries, no harm has come to you, just sensing what you are and I can clearly tell."
He stopped looking at her in full, she stood some distance behind him, "you're of Ishbalan Descend, am I right?"
"You're right. I have Ishbalan decent from my Grandfather, my father and my wife do not. You Ametrians burned down our holy land," he said closing his eyes for a minute, before opening them again, "you don't view me with pity like everyone else does, when they learn," he said frowning at her. Her eyes wasn't showing Pity, but was filled with a seriousness, he had never seen before.
"I have seen what the civil war has done to a lot of Ishbalans, but I can't just view them with pity. How can that help them?" Lucia said crossing her arms, "No, when I come across them. I view them as my equal and do what I can to help them even for a little while. I hope that even, that can at least aspire some of them to stop hating us," she looked at him, "those I have come across to have been injured, some have helped me when I was injured to and unable to do something myself and I have never hurt them back or reported where they were. Violence only breeds more violence no matter how you look at it."
"Also after all I have experienced with Ishbalans, I have come to learn; that it's possible for us to sit down and talk with one another without worrying about race. I have learnt some things from quite a few Ishbalans and in return I have healed some of their wounds, showing that not all of the Ametrians are evil"
She walked forward passing him, he smiled at her, "that was not an answer, I was expecting to hear," he said, as he followed and guided her to the Infirmary, "but it was sure something."
.~*~.
Brigadier General Olivier looked at Lucia, who stood in silence healing a hurt soldier, "so this is the Specialist, you brought here?" she asked in a stern voice, "I didn't know, children were soldiers these days."
"some are others sleep unaware of what the military do for them," Lucia replied, removing her hands from the wound, that was nonexistent now, "I sleep better knowing, that we have capable soldiers keeping us safe from the North."
Olivier's went small, "are you mocking me?"
"No, I'm giving you my gratitude Brigadier General Armstrong. I know I would never be strong enough to stand at the top like you do, but I would keep the ones under you healthy," Lucia replied, her eyes never leaving the Generals.
"You speak a truth from the heart, but why are you here North, I'm sure there would be somewhere else you would be of use. There's little to do for an Alchemist in your field here," Olivier studied her.
"yeah, I became aware of that, when I came to the Hospital, that was why I reported in to the North Command, saying if they had use of me I would be ready for them," Lucia stated, she looked over at the wounded.
.~*~.
"She's quite an interesting Alchemist," Olivier said, as Lucia was guided to a place where she could rest, having shown tiredness after finishing healing some of soldiers she had worked on.
"You don't said, ma'am," Major Miles said, "She is something else. She respects people looks for their core if I might say."
"Let's just hope, she knows how to place that trust, so she doesn't get enemies along the way"
