Forever Haunted

Chapter 1: 2 years later

Mai sat up on her bed panting and very scared but not remembering why she was even feeling like that. "What-what just happened?" she whispered in the silence of the room.

The silence, comforting and yet something was amiss – and she knew it.

Flickers of light could be seen through her window and through her pale blue curtain. As Mai tried to steady her breathing, her left hand was gripping the blanket so hard that she thought she was going to tear the cloth. Her right hand clutched her chest in vain, hoping that it would somehow calm the frantic drumming of her heart.

When it did, however, Mai swung her legs to the edge of the bed and got up. Wrong move. The dizziness that she had un-subconsciously buried at the back of her mind while she was pre-occupied (read - having a panic attack) resurfaced. Then in mere seconds, Mai was up and running to the bathroom and heaved whatever she had on her stomach, leaving her utterly weak and exhausted.

"Oh, God." she groaned, still tasting the bile on her mouth. She quickly rinsed her mouth to get rid of the aftertaste.

Satisfied, she did her morning rituals; she went to her small but well supplied kitchen, completely bypassing the idea of breakfast... she went to her refrigerator, grabbed the carton of milk and drank from it. Went back to the bathroom to wash her face, brush her teeth and combed her hair. And Mai went to her light blue painted bedroom and eyed her teal covered single bed that was messy from her sleep, so she went and tidied it. She turned her gaze to her window and saw that the sun was already rising on the horizon; she then turned her attention to the digital alarm clock as it informed her that it was 6:00 in the morning but she never heard it go off, she must've forgot to set it last night before she went to bed. For once Mai was thankful for her nightmare as it kept her from being late.

She sighed and went back on getting ready for the day ahead of her; she went to her closet wore her undies and picked a plain white shirt so that she could wear her cream knitted sweater above it and got her faded jean from the closet to go with it. Mai went and sat in front of her vanity mirror to tame her wavy hair that reached the middle of her back into a high ponytail leaving some loose curls to gently frame her face. Satisfied, she got to her feet and grabbed her navy knapsack swung it onto her back before exiting her room.

She surveyed her apartment, looking at her living room that she chose to paint in a cream color. The small bookshelf that occupied the almost the whole wall in her right was almost full, 'Maybe I should install another one? There's still space beside it for the same tall bookshelf.' Mai thought fleetingly. There was just a small space that between the bookshelf and small couch, which didn't bother Mai at all because she just needed enough space to remove and put back her books without damaging them. Just in front of the couch was her small coffee table where her remotes for her medium sized flat TV and DVD player was placed on, those and her hand crafted bowl that contains various knick-knacks like the set of keys that includes the one for her apartment. She breathed a sigh of relief, mentally patting herself on the back for making it a habit of checking everything before going out. Mai walked a couple of steps to retrieve the keys, her socked feet coming in contact with the small dark blue (almost black) fluffy carpet that was under the couch and coffee table. Once she got the the keys she looked at her kitchen slash dining room – which was technically just a sink, a range, regular sized refrigerator and a small breakfast nook – and checked the gas range it was off. Mai remembered to check the bathroom and her room so she was sure that she didn't forget to turn off the faucet, turn off the lights and remove the appliances from the power sockets before she went out of her apartment and locked the door. She then left for her classes at Tokyo University.

Loving the feel of the morning breeze against her skin, she happily entered the gate of the university. Getting various "Good Mornings" on her way to class, even from the people she completely didn't know but just didn't mind that fact too much, she just smiled as she returned their greetings. Still trekking her way to her to the classroom of her first class, Mai saw someone very familiar leaning against the wall, seemingly waiting for her.
